Bro please do react and listen on casiopea songs and their music are really good.
Hey Brandon, where abouts are you in Canada? I'm in Canada too!
Hey Brandon, can you do a video on how you get that beautiful guitar sound you use in your solo videos? The very clean but overdriven linging sound.
Everybody hates the fookin metronome, but you still should use it.
I like it
nah, what i hate is recording
I never did the metronome thing either. You only practise with a metronome when you want to work on your timing using a click. Hint: never play with a click on the one, place it off the beat. Make it swing.
Guthrie's protégé has spoken!
“It’s BANANAS!!!!”
Shows apples*
Bro is on cigarettes💀
I'm so glad that your argument is essentially "you're not Guthrie Govan". It's exactly what I would have said.
Its a bad argument though lol. I actually agree with him that metronome would help nearly everybody, but every guitar legend is an anomaly, does that mean you should never take advice from them?
@@fourtyseven47572No, it means you should be able to think when making a decision. You're interpreting things in too much of a binary.
@@Marinatina2 think about what when making what decisions?

i left smoking for playing guitar.
This legendary guitarist keeping you big as hell
I just recently started using a metronome (my last lesson was actually how to practice with it cause i could just never understand.) But in the few days ive been using it i can already tell a difference in my playing so it really is a huge help
I don't think Guthrie just cares about playing the actual song he's jamming to, there's a lot of different areas you can benefit from doing this. You are essentially using a metronome since you're playing to a consistent BPM, you're doing ear training by trying to play the melody of the vocalist, you're practicing improvisation by just adding fills and licks and just soloing over the whole damn song if you want, there's a bunch of benefits to playing to a song instead of a metronome. What you should really be doing is throwing on a radio and just playing with whatever comes on, it gives you such a good idea for how to fit into different styles and tempos and everything.
That being said, none of that should apply to most beginners, since those are more advanced concepts than they should be focusing on when they are still trying to learn the fundamentals
I think Brandon missed Guthrie’s point. The way I was looking at it was Guthrie jamming along to it in the sense finding the key and improvising, trying to match the same notes wherever he could along the way. Its great for Ear training as well
@@amolcho exactly, it's more of a improv practice thing than anything
@@jadenlothes5001 yeah and its super fun and beneficial. Been helping me a lot
@@amolcho no! then then why would Guthrie talk about metronome? Guthrie has a lot to say about improvisation but here if he talks about metronome then he is talking about how to feel the rhythm, articulation etc. practice with metronome to be well trained tight musician and practice with tracks to learn Improvisation. lastly John Petrucci uses clicks on live performances so this metronome is definitely not just for beginners.
Guthrie "Claims" to have never used a metronome. Can't prove a negative, so we have to take him at his word. Plus, there is always a bit of lore building in these interviews
The metronome brings out his weaknesses which he couldn't accept....😂
I will say that my 8-ish years of School Band on Saxophone gave me a good sense of beat-to-rhythm and I find I don't use the metronome as often as I should, but I still break it out for exercises when I feel it starting to slip because I haven't played in any kind of band setting in a hot minute. (I use it on both sax and guitar incase that wasn't clear. Lol)
It is such an amazing tool and there's a reason the modern version has existed for over 2 centuries now....
Same vibe as JIMI HENDRIX DIDN'T NEED TO LEARN ANY MUSIC THEORY*
*let's not mention he spent 13hours a day playing with world class musicians and that it still could have helped him (notably to compose stuff on non-guitar)
That came to my mind immediately
Will you be making video about different ways to practice with metronome?
I guess the thing is that building rhythm really needs a varied set of tools. The metronome is really useful, because via apps, they're easily accessible. Playing along with records is good, because - as long as your expectations are realistic - it'll be a lot more fun.
But the best way to learn about rhythms is to play with a good drummer. Granted, finding a good drummer who isn't already in 12 bands and has time for another commitment like that is a little more difficult than throwing the One Ring into the Cracks of Doom, but it can happen.
Stop wasting time commenting, and go practice! Bye.
I honestly have never had a problem practicing and using a metronome I follow carol kayes advice which is make it groove with u when u play like drums I treat it like drums ofc bass and snare its just beat into my mind its awesome and fun man
Hey Brandon, after some research I found out that your telecaster is not a real fender. The logo in your telecaster is not in the right position.
When I first got a guitar years ago I knew my timing was off even though didn't know I needed a metronome which I have today
I hate metronomes. The sound is annoying, I refuse.
Ok?
@@cboisandlin9601 And?
I got a video recommended from a, I think flute teacher, who also talked about the downsides of the metronome. I was very sceptical and still am, I have developed big disadvantages from not using metronomes for years.
Hello @BrandonDeon.
I've a question : Shapes or Notes.
Now this disturbs me, because of modes and modes shapes. I've learned guitar by myself taught, but today i wanted to give guitar teaching a shot. I was a bit shocked, because the first session today with a guitar teacher, he told me to learn the "Shapes" of the modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phryggian).
It bugged be because in sheet music (I play viola da gamba in a Baroque ensemble), we learn notes. When I read sheet music, it's like a reflexe my fingers place themselves on the right notes, and when I see a chord, I know where to place my fingers, and also what is that chord and in which scale thanks to the key signature. I do because at some point i learned the actual notes.
However, I realized that it's a common approach for guitar tutorials online, the first thing shown is the "Patterns" (Chords shapes, scales shapes) but rarely do I see notes. I feel like that you should first internalize the notes and THEN the "Shapes" will appear through your brain as a shortcut.
For me, personally coming from baroque music and used to use Sheet music as a support, it gave me a wrong impression. The impression that it was common for guitarist to try to dodge notes, just because they don't want to be bothered and shorcut it with "Shapes". Just like they do with chord. For me Cmaj7 is not |X32010| but it's first and foremost : C G E B, wherever on the fretboard.
So as an experienced player, who also learned jazz, what's your take on this. Do you think that a beginner should learn notes or shapes ?
Tried playing the main riff on Holy Wars for a few weeks as well as other things but when I used the metronome last week i almost learned the whole thing in a few days
I watch some of Brandon older vids and it’s funny how he got angrier over time
Guthrie Govan most certainly spent SOME time with a met. This guy has put in so much time on guitar though that his met time was just insignificant to everything else he’s done.
Playing with a track is so good for you, but that doesn’t mean playing with a metal isn’t also, SO SO good.
For me, playing with a met vs a song/ track accomplishes two different things:
Met= time independence, more attention to detail with time, tone, and vocabulary
Track= comping, ear training on the fly, good fun
Not useless at all, I usually do my chromatic exercises with a metronome and it does help me a lot even if I stop using it I still somehow getting better with my tempo overall
If you go and look for Govan and click tracks on UA-cam, you will find the full story… “I never did the metronome thing… what I have done a lot is use a drum machine.”
ua-cam.com/video/tE76UmyaJ7M/v-deo.html
Omg I LOVE how you've labelled some of these lessons: "If this exercise doesn't help you memorize the fretboard, you're hopeless", "The mother fookin' major scale" and my favourite, "POWER CHORDS! ROOAAAARRRR!" xD Oh my god. Love it =D
i personally love to jam on metronome
Day 3 of using metronome : I question myself if I still want to play guitar.
I've seen a Russian man having never heard a song, transpose it half a step down, and play it perfectly within two minutes, having NEVER heard it! Why? Because he understood tempo, note values and read music. That's what you call a musician, anything else is a hobby.
Do you recommend the watch metronome for a beginner?
At least you got a Masters Degree in Music. Winner!
Huge help, great tool and you need it for the first few years. But eventually if you put in your 10,000 hours, and get decent, one of the perks of playing life with other musicians is that together a great band can hunt out the feel and pocket without it. It may humanize things, but even old grey beard guitar players may still even crack out a metronome, when trying to master some new weird-ass fast solo.
There's two things to consider with Govan's statement (Moreso to those who use it as an excuse to be lazy):
1) Is he better or worse off for doing so? Would he have been mediocre if he had, OR would he have put his current self to shame if he had?
2) Assuming that he is better or it was negligible; WHY did that work for him, and does that EVEN apply to *you*?
I actually never did but still think it’s good to use one.. have played on and off for most of my life….it would have been helpful to me for sure but now I have practiced so long without it I might never use one before I pass ..😮🎸…Guthrie rocks beyond reason but he is a god on the guitar 🎸 Watched him live on three occasions and am blessed to have been there.
People hate it because it’s hard and confrontational how much their timing sucks! Just like sight reading…
And if you hate the sound, just use a high hat tick.
Tbh i don't like it either, but it does help and it is a fact, experienced fact
Always hated when famous people mentioned stuff like this without at least some caveat. I think two things can be true at once: there are multiple paths to your goals with guitar, but some of those paths will get you there faster than others for 99.99% of the population. Probably best to not roll the dice, and just do the route that will get you there the fastest, within reason and while enjoying the process still.
In the documentary The History of Rock and roll, Carlos Santana said that anybody couldn't learn to play guitar, he said you had to be born with it and that it wasn't do re mi fa so la ti do. What a stupid statement that is huh
Would it not be records he played along with that was his metronome. Not good one but filling the role the metronome has in learning to play?
Metronome is probably limiting someone at the level of Guthrie, given he does improv mostly, but if he learned covers, he'd probably use it.
I play with feel. I just use the metronome for reference and practice then I just play with feel when I record. you don’t need it.
I just love the fact that he plays with Hans Zimmer
“Not using the metronome is killing ur gains”
First things first. I think you have a small flub on the AC/DC transcription, it is actually a G with a bend rather than the G# you have written. Second, bands like AC/DC didn't record to a metronome. The timing fluctuates within a song but they had played together so much they were locked in. So, your point that the metronome is great for subdividing does not cancel his point that playing along to record is great.
Saying guthrie never uses a metronome is like saying zuckerberg dropped out of college.
You're a funny fella
3:12 Couldn't agree more

I hate metronomes. I prefer backing tracks.
Man. Play with a band!!! Then you internalize the groove!
Who the foook is that metronome?
you could just stop appealing to idiots if it pisses you off so much
Malcolm WAS a metronome
Metronome probably can help nearly everyone but for the statistical anomaly point, all guitar legends are statistical anomalies, does that mean we dont follow any of their advice?
Practice to a metronome kids. If you ever plan to record your music alone at your home with pro tools or something you will have to know how to play to a click track anyways, (unless you don't mind having your recordings sound like shit).
Bottom line, practice to a metronome.
Me
If you suck at keeping time, then yeah, use a metronome. Some of us don’t have that problem.
Most guitarists you’ve ever heard of don’t use one and never did. The metronome thing is a collegiate/Musicians Institute thing. Yes, it’s helpful. No, you don’t absolutely need it. It’s just a tool. Use it or don’t use it.
You wanna learn tempo and rhythm? Study Van Halen, Dream Theater, Metallica, Rush, etc, etc.
That’s if you want to ACTUALLY perform something someone wants to hear. Otherwise, lock yourself in your bedroom with your metronome and subdivide away….
Dream Theater uses a click track in their live performances 🤷♂️
I don't hate the metronome. Every practice/exercise is just like in a game. You suck at first and get better at it one session at a time
Yeah but the game is boring.
