Is the 10 Meter Band Dead?

  • When I started off in January this year with my new FT-710 radio, one of my friends told me to try 10m as he found it to be excellent for working DX. This was because Solar Cycle 25 was nearing its peak and higher bands are coming up while lower bands like 80 and 160m were going down. I was quick to take his advice as the limited space on my terrace would easily take a 10m dipole antenna. Initially I was on a simple 10m dipole which was almost horizontal, being mounted on 3m CPVC pipes fixed on the parapet of my terrace, with total height from ground of about 7m. I could work DX daily using this rather limited setup. But now, look at the waterfall display on 10m in my radio, not a single signal is seen. Read more: johnsonfrancis...

GA OM! I think, strong solar CMEs activate the D-layer of the ionosphere, which strongly absorbs HF, especially during the day. “10 Meters” is a daytime band, so this influence is very strong there.

I've barely been able to work RBN on 10m but my (paper) log still looks like it did around 1980. Almost all DX. Running 100W & dipole here in MN. TNX ES 73 DE NØIP

Nice to know that you are also a fan of 10m. Hope it will wake up after September when they say that MUF will go above 28 MHz (ua-cam.com/video/nDNAujS07rI/v-deo.html). 73 de Jon, VU2JO

10 meters for me peaked the Eclipse weekend in April over North America as I made a mobile contact to South Africa then the solar CMEs began followed by Summer in the Northern Hemisphere which was effectively a one two punch knockout of 10 meters and it still has not fully recovered. 73

Thanks a lot for the detailed observation report. Yes. I did have a QSO with an Indonesian Station at nearly 10 pm local time during the eclipse. As I am also in the Northern Hemisphere, similar situation here as well. 73 de Jon, VU2JO.

Nearly constant CME`s and flares have created blackout conditions throughout the HF band. There is limited DX activity at night on 40 and 75 meters. ssn it at 164. NOT at cycle 25 peak. See Solarham for more facts and less drivel.

Thanks a lot for the pacifying words from an old timer! Though I started off 40 years back, came on 10m only this year. In my initial days I had only 40/80m homebrew and it was sunspot low time soon after I started. Learning 10m with my new FT-710 now. Waiting for summer doldrums to settle and winter anomaly (ua-cam.com/video/nDNAujS07rI/v-deo.htmlsi=dkW5sPt8T9Az1nqZ) to improve 10m. 73 de Jon, VU2JO

Same observation here. I look over 10m every day , as i am doing intruder watch . Just some local noise and nothing ... Hence there was good Sporadic E this week in Europe on 6m .

spotting yourself will not work, as many have the cluster settings filtered by continent. if you think calling CQ for 15minutes is enough to call a band dead. well its dead for your antenna system and QTH. I have been able to made daily contacts on 10m since Jan - 2024. mind you, all CW, so for me It's wide open with a wire and 10 Watts.

You are right one VU ham from North of the country has been able to have 10m contacts on CW recently. Yes, for my antenna system, 10m is not that good now! Nice to know that you are having regular contacts with a wire and 10 Watts. May I presume that it was out door operation? 73 de Jon, VU2JO

Yep they all are , 40 , 20 , and 15 meters all gone . I got my ham Class A license in the early 80's and at that time H.F. radio was buzzing , there were so many broadcast stations , hundreds day and night . Ham bands were in constant use . O.K. this was before the end of the cold war and the beginning of the internet . But it's more than that . There are still some S.W. Broadcasters But H.F. Conditions here in the U.K.today and recently are usually very poor too none . I think the ham radio community is in total denial . It's not the lack of Ham radio operators on H.F It's the lack of H.F. propagation . Somehow we managed to kill the Ionosphere F1 layer F2 layer all gone . Sorry to have to say it but most days here in the U.K. H.F. radio is mostly just STATIC NOISE ! 80 meters at night 20 or 15 during the day All gone .thanks for the video DE G4MXC

I can't agree with you more. Same situtation here! I could work a lot of DX on CW with homebrew radio in late 1980s. Now with commercial SSB radio, I have not been able to work DX for the past one month. Noise level is quite high most of the time. 73 de Jon, VU2JO

Yes band dead , occasional short lived weak sporadic E in the UK, nothing at all today! I check the band by tuning to 27555, the Italians are shouting continually , if I hear them then thats my indicator that there is a chance for an opening on 10, if not then there is nothing on 10m!

@@johnsonstechworld yes there is nothing like it, the weakest signal it can detect is -138db, the tuning ,selectivity, agc , sensitivity can not be faulted I have a Techsun 660 and a copy of the Malahite chinese radios, these are now not used, all this on a telescopic antenna, what my Icom pro hears on end fed 20m wire so does this beauty on the telescopic, it is like having your table top HF set in your pocket! There are glowing reviews on the net, its hand made by Alex in Belarus direct from him, others sell it at inflated price !UK price about £120, I ordered another 2 months ago latest model with MW, but Alex refunded my money as the customs at his end think it's some kind of coding or other device for the Russian war, he needs other paperwork now.Your audio on your video is superb by the way!
