Returning to Ham Radio (Amateur Radio)! Initially my Amateur Radio callsign was VU2JFP with Grade I license and later VU2JO with Advanced Grade license. Had opportunity to be part of Amateur Radio communication network for National Games when it was held in multiple cities of Kerala, way back in 1988 along with the Amateur Radio community of Kerala.
Setup for Working Diwata 2 or PO-101 Amateur Radio Satellite
I have been able to work FM satellites fairly well with my limited setup for LEO Satellite operations. Diwata-2, the Philippine microsatellite launched in 2018, known among amateur radio satellite operators as Philippines-OSCAR 101 (PO-101) has been a bit difficult for me to work. What is Narrow Band FM in Amateur Radio?
Переглядів 1764 години тому
Some of you would have noted narrow band FM in the settings of your radio. Others would have read that certain amateur radio satellites are better worked with narrow band FM. Read more: johnsonfrancis.org/techworld/what-is-narrow-band-fm-in-amateur-radio/
Cubical Quad Antenna
Переглядів 1387 годин тому
First time I saw a cubical quad antenna was decades back, on the rooftop of a VU ham friend. It was a two element cubical quad for 20m amateur radio band. As he did not have an antenna rotator, he used to rotate it manually, which he called as 'Armstrong method'! Yesterday, another VU ham friend has installed a multi-element cubical quad for 2m, as part of his satellite tracking system for work...
If only LAPAN A-2 was activated a bit earlier!

Activation voice repeater of LAPAN A-2 is only towards the tail end of the pass in this region. Though I was heard by my friend in Mumbai, we could not complete a contact through the satellite. Read more: johnsonfrancis.org/techworld/if-only-lapan-a-2-was-activated-a-bit-earlier/
Doppler Tuning for Saudisat 1C (SO-50) Satellite
Переглядів 419 годин тому
I usually use the Argentinian Amsat satellite pass web page (www.amsat.org.ar/pass.htm) displayed on my mobile phone, for manual Doppler tracking in my IC 2730 full duplex radio for LEO satellite operations. Here is a demo of the changes noted on the website during a pass of SO-50 satellite in my region.
Repairing My Fallen Moxon Yagi for LEO Satellites

My Moxon Yagi had fallen due to wear and tear of the ties, while I was trying to rotate it to the required azimuth prior to a satellite pass. Now we will go through the steps of repairing it.
Down Came My Moxon Yagi for LEO Satellites!
Переглядів 3112 годин тому
I was trying to adjust the azimuth of my Moxon Yagi for coming pass of International Space Station. Suddenly it came down on my head. Fortunately, only the PVC boom struck me and I did not have any problem. That was a great lesson for me!

“Armstrong” Antenna Rotator for LEO Satellite Operations!
Very nice video, thanks. 73 b.
Glad you enjoyed it. I did enjoying seeing "Home Brew 1929 TNT Transmitter" on your qrz page. Reminded me of my old homebrewing days in late 1980s! I had homebrewed a 3 x 807 CW/AM TX and worked a few 'W's as well, on CW in 1989.
Yes john sir
Thank you.
Thank you sir from m6jyp
Welcome. 73 de VU2JO
💪Armstrong method 💪
Thank you. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
nice
Thank you very much.
VERY NICE
Thanks
TAKE CARE
Thank you
Good video. You are using Yaesu FT 710 AESS ? I'm also using the same.. De VU2STO
Yes, correct. Hope to hear you on air soon. There is a pre-Belgaum net round table daily on 7050 kHz before 7 am, from 6.30 am and sometimes much before that, depending on propagation. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Good idea
Keep watching
I have Yaesu FT-2900 that my dad gave me, and it has one of the most inconvenient placements of the output coax socket 😄. It was recessed in, and I understand it was for strength and safety purpose but still, patch cable would be nice!
Thanks for sharing
This makes a lot of sense and is a great idea for anyone that removes cables from their radios a lot. Almost all of my radios are (older) portable so I will try this. Thank you for this information.
Glad it was helpful!
The full loop is the heart of the cubical quad antenna. The closed nature makes it less susceptible to noise. 73 de WB3CFN 😃
I remember seeing a two element cubical quad for 20 m at ham's QTH about 200 miles from here, which he used to rotate by 'Armstrong' method. The noise level in my radio is really distressing. S9 on 40m most of the time! But for space constraints here, I always think of loop antennas. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Thankyou sir nice video regarding patch cable
So nice of you
Thought it was defect. 😂 Greetings from The Netherlands
There is also a slight defect. If you observe carefully, the upper element has an angle from the lower one. But it has not changed the performance. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
@@johnsonstechworld Yes, I saw that on other CP22E's too. Good to hear it's still good. Thanks!
73
Good information 🎉
Thanks
You have such great videos, I like your explanations and lecture style. I notice with the newer IC chip FM receivers that they do a better job of this, it seems that they are using software/firmware for locking onto the stronger signal, as I notice a bit of delay in the signal sorting/acquisition. One can tell this as after the signal has "locked", it's actually a bit difficult to "unlock" it as you try to move up or down in frequency. Maybe only radio DX'ers notice this. All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL
Thanks for the info! I have only IC 2730 FM dual band amateur radio, which is analog. There are FM Broacast receivers in cars at home. But I am not sure whether they are software defined radios. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
👍
Thank you.
visiting the site thanks
You're welcome
I was an intern at LAPAN Satelite Technology Center in 2018 learning about the LAPAN A3 and future A4, in the same building and even room where the A2 was built. It was only last year after I got my ham license that LAPAN-A2 actually have a crossband repeater 😅 Just found your channel yesterday and I love it, not much unneccesary talk, straight to the point! 73
Thank you very much. Glad to know that you were at LAPAN Satelite Technology Center. Hope to hear you on band! 73 de Jon, VU2JO
VU2JO De HS8MOM yr 59 😊
Great to see you here! Thanks for the nice QSO. 73
Sir very good information
So nice of you
Thanks for bringing us along Jon! Some very good operators on your side of the world. 73!!
Yes they are! 73
yes i am very happy to listen my voice on ISS thanks De VU2KOC
You are most welcome! 73 de VU2JO
Tanks for QSO DE YD5NTP
Welcome. 73
Weekly schedules of LAPAN A-2 are posted regularly on their Twitter page at: x.com/pr_teksat/
Linear satellite are more interesting. You would like rs44
You are right. But I should get a new radio for that! My IC 2730 is FM only. 73
@@johnsonstechworld Icom 910. Best satellite rig I’ve used. Reasonable price now
Shall check with VU dealers. 73
Excellent
Thank you so much. Your QRZ profile shows a good VHF beam. Hoping to hear you on LEO satellites soon, with another UHF beam for RX. Wonder whether you are there on the LEO satellite group? 73
Venturing Into space world. Great Professor.
Thank you kindly. Like any child in my era, after the Apollo 11 moon landing, I was also very fond of space travel. So at least let my voice travel over radio waves into space, though it is not uncommon in these days with many of the overseas phone calls being relayed by satellites, I presume.
Fantastic john❤
Thanks a lot Kishor!
Congratulations
Thank you very much.
Wow ! Superb
Thanks a lot
Thank you!
You're welcome!
hello Johnson's continue your video, please! 73
Shalll plan soon.
We used to call this smf battery. Is this too VRLA? Vu2vva
Yes. SMF means Sealed Maintenance Free battery. It is also called SLA: Sealed Lead Acid battery. VRLA means Valve Regulated Lead Acid battery. Though the battery has a catalyst on its lead plates for facilitating recombination of gases produced, inadvertent high charging currents could produce explosive levels of gas build up, which is released using a safety valve like mechanism and hence the name. Electrolyte is either in gel form or embedded in a fiber glass mesh.
Nice
Thanks
Good information 🎉
So nice of you
Nice🎉
Thanks 🤗
What is difference between the privileges of Restricted and general grade?
The most important difference that I am aware of is the sanction for higher power which is 400 Watts on HF in case of General Grade.
Thanks for sharing VU2JO DE VU3EFL
You're welcome! Your homebrew VHF J-Pole may be enough to receive signals from International Space Station during good passes, along with your dual band hand held VHF/UHF radio. VU2JKR had contacted astronauts on Mir Space Station using a homebrew J-Pole, long back. He had used a dual band base station then. Hope to hear you on satellites soon. 73 de Jon, VU2JO.
I love watching your videos
Thanks a lot
yes, the Icom IC-718 would be a good choice if the Icom IC-7300 is not available where you are. the optional 2.8KHz wide IF-Filter makes the sound alot nicer, the built in 2.4KHz filter is to narrow to sound nice. the optional 2.8KHz IF-Filter is by factory design only in the RX line, not the TX line. to get the 2.8KHz IF-Filter into the TX line needs some soldering. your video here is 1/2 year old, did you get the 718 or which radio ?
Thanks a lot for the detailed info about IC 718. I bought an FT-710 as many advised me that a waterfall display is needed. I find that quite useful (ua-cam.com/video/f5IfhQALarg/v-deo.html) for my way of working DX now.
Somebody gets but somebody not🎉
Thank you for viewing.
sir nice info
So nice of you
Visualizing something that is normally only heard is a huge advantage. You get to utilize more of your senses to help you navigate. Great video as always. Thanks Jon.
Very true! Thanks a lot for watching and adding your valuable insight. 73
A waterfall is a great tool.
Yes! Any ham radio which can monitor more than one band simultaneously?
No tear down of the PSU?
I just switch it off when I am on the radio. At other times I use it to listen music from my laptop. Just now I found out that RFI disappears if I remove the USB cable taking power to the speaker! Never thought of opening up the power supply and finding how it produces RFI or whether there is a solution for it. I felt that it is beyond me! As it is fully sealed, if I have to look inside, I have to break it open! If I get some snap on ferrite beads, I could try it over the connected USB cable.
That power supply comes with a free built-in radio jammer. :) What an incredible display of RFI from such a tiny source.
Thank you
Great video! I enjoyed it. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
