I remember wanting a DVD player, but they were still so very expensive around the years you were born. We didn't get one until maybe 2005 or 2006, a bit on the cheaper side, but I remember thinking to myself how much of a big deal it was to even have one in the first place and all the movies we could watch now. My brother was born in 2002 and he was still able to interact with VHS while at the same time also using DVD. There are certain things where you had to experience as it happened to fully understand how things were, but I don't think VHS is one of those. Certainly there are things from before my brother was born in which I have knowledge of and have had to tell him about how things were or what kids did while growing up, some of which is getting left in the past, which kinda sucks. There are also times in which I don't expect my brother to know about something from when I was a kid and he surprises me with fully knowing it. It shouldn't surprise me since he probably picked up on some things while we grew up living in the same house. I know he likes and knows a lot of older music because I would listen to it at home. I get what you mean though, good on you to have knowledge from other times. Knowing what a VHS is and how to use it might not sound like a lot, but you never know when that, or any other knowledge will come in handy. Just more opportunities to show someone how much smarter you are!

/bin/rm command for remove file -f force the command (no popup for each file asking if you are sure you want to delete it) -r removes directories and their contents * instead of a filename, makes it run on every file. On a normal computer, it is still possible to get the data back after it is deleted in this way. A computer will not truly delete something when you ask it to delete it, it is only truly deleted when the computer decides to overwrite the old deleted files with new files.

In my 3D Animation class last year, I finished my project at home (we were using Autodesk Maya) and put it on a thumb drive to take it to school and submit it. When I got to school (it was my first class) I tried to insert the thumb drive, and I opened the file. It was blank and there was literally nothing on it, so I tried again a few more times and asked my teacher for help. She asked me if I had a PC or Mac at home and I said PC. For PC, she said it was supposed to be a .ma file instead of a .mb file. Or the other way around, I don’t really remember. I also forgot to set the project, and I had only brought the scene. That means that I had none of the work that I had worked on for like SIX HOURS at home. I cried and my teacher apologized and told me I could try to bring it next class. I wasn’t gonna risk it so I just redid the project better and got an A. She also said that I made the movement very realistic (it was a character so it was supposed to move like a human). Not as bad as losing Toy Story 2, but it all turned out fine in the end for me.
A small breakdown for non-programmers: /bin/rm -r -f * /bin/ the directory the "rm" program is stored in (this part is unnecessary) rm calls the "rm", which is dedicated to removing/deleting files -r flag that tells the program to also remove folders and not only files -f force the action, meaning the file is deleted even if another program is accessing it * the file/folder the program should delete. The star refers to everything in the current directory In short, this command deletes everything inside the folder you're currently in, without any warning and without checking whether the selected files are in any way important to the system or are currently in use.
Alright, that was the one part that confused me, I thought it was meant to be "rm -r -f /bin/*". As in to empty the bin directory. I didn't know that's where the rm command utility is stored. Thanks for clearing that up!

Companies still use tapes for backups as they’re fairly easier to store than hard drives and more accessible than cloud storage. They can now hold up to some 180 TB of storage according to Sony per tape. The average tape I come across for storage is about 6 TB or so. There’s also now a TB3-based tape drive too.

Linux guy here, the command is actually "rm -rf /" Breakdown: "rm" and "/bin/rm" is basically the same thing. Whenever you run a command (program) it checks if the program exists in the /bin folder, the /usr/bin folder, and a few other ones, when it finds it, it launches that program. So while /bin/rm is _technically_ correct, no one does that. "rm" is a program for POSIX systems (including MacOS and Linux) do delete or "remove" stuff. "-r -f" works too, but most people type "-rf" because it does the same thing and it's slightly faster to type "-r" means recursive. That means, apply this action to all the files in any nested folders "-f" means force, don't prompt for everything, just do it! so if you have a folder called "/home/carlinbros/junkstuff" ("home" is basically the "users" folder in POSIX) you can use "rm -rf /home/carlinbros/junkstuff" to delete the folder and everything in it. or you can use "rm -rf /home/carlinbros/junkstuff/*" to delete everything in that folder _without_ deleting the folder itself. POSIX doesn't have C: D: drives or anything like that. Everything is a folder. Your "main" drive is in the "root" folder (/), and anything else, like USB Drives and such can be folders within that folder. So knowing all this, you can probably guess that the command "rm -rf /*" will delete literally everything on your main drive, and since any secondary drives behave as folders on your main drive, literally every file on your computer will be removed. (Though you need to have root (administrative) permissions to do something like that, which usually involves typing your password) Bit of long text here, still a great video! But the tech-nerd in me had to come out :L
I actually don't think it was `rm -rf /`. It could be that the command `rm -rf *` was run in a needed directory, say /projects/toyStory2. This would only run it recursively through the one directory and would also be less likely to be stopped by permissions (so root wouldn't be necessary to destroy everything of value). Still, you gave a good breakdown of the ghost story that keeps us all awake at night.
Yeah, for some reason the working directory didn't even occur to me. the "-f*" and the fact that only Toy Story 2 was affected makes a lot more sense now.

In my 3D Animation class last year, I finished my project at home (we were using Autodesk Maya) and put it on a thumb drive to take it to school and submit it. When I got to school (it was my first class) I tried to insert the thumb drive, and I opened the file. It was blank and there was literally nothing on it, so I tried again a few more times and asked my teacher for help.
She asked me if I had a PC or Mac at home and I said PC. For PC, she said it was supposed to be a .ma file instead of a .mb file. Or the other way around, I don’t really remember. I also forgot to set the project, and I had only brought the scene. That means that I had none of the work that I had worked on for like SIX HOURS at home. I cried and my teacher apologized and told me I could try to bring it next class. I wasn’t gonna risk it so I just redid the project better and got an A. She also said that I made the movement very realistic (it was a character so it was supposed to move like a human). Not as bad as losing Toy Story 2, but it all turned out fine in the end for me.

A small breakdown for non-programmers:
/bin/rm -r -f *
/bin/ the directory the "rm" program is stored in (this part is unnecessary)
rm calls the "rm", which is dedicated to removing/deleting files
-r flag that tells the program to also remove folders and not only files
-f force the action, meaning the file is deleted even if another program is accessing it
* the file/folder the program should delete. The star refers to everything in the current directory
In short, this command deletes everything inside the folder you're currently in, without any warning and without checking whether the selected files are in any way important to the system or are currently in use.

Alright, that was the one part that confused me, I thought it was meant to be "rm -r -f /bin/*". As in to empty the bin directory. I didn't know that's where the rm command utility is stored. Thanks for clearing that up!

Companies still use tapes for backups as they’re fairly easier to store than hard drives and more accessible than cloud storage. They can now hold up to some 180 TB of storage according to Sony per tape. The average tape I come across for storage is about 6 TB or so.
There’s also now a TB3-based tape drive too.

Linux guy here, the command is actually "rm -rf /"
Breakdown:
"rm" and "/bin/rm" is basically the same thing. Whenever you run a command (program) it checks if the program exists in the /bin folder, the /usr/bin folder, and a few other ones, when it finds it, it launches that program. So while /bin/rm is _technically_ correct, no one does that.
"rm" is a program for POSIX systems (including MacOS and Linux) do delete or "remove" stuff.
"-r -f" works too, but most people type "-rf" because it does the same thing and it's slightly faster to type
"-r" means recursive. That means, apply this action to all the files in any nested folders
"-f" means force, don't prompt for everything, just do it!
so if you have a folder called "/home/carlinbros/junkstuff" ("home" is basically the "users" folder in POSIX) you can use "rm -rf /home/carlinbros/junkstuff" to delete the folder and everything in it. or you can use "rm -rf /home/carlinbros/junkstuff/*" to delete everything in that folder _without_ deleting the folder itself.
POSIX doesn't have C: D: drives or anything like that. Everything is a
folder. Your "main" drive is in the "root" folder (/), and anything
else, like USB Drives and such can be folders within that folder.
So knowing all this, you can probably guess that the command "rm -rf /*" will delete literally everything on your main drive, and since any secondary drives behave as folders on your main drive, literally every file on your computer will be removed.
(Though you need to have root (administrative) permissions to do something like that, which usually involves typing your password)

I actually don't think it was `rm -rf /`. It could be that the command `rm -rf *` was run in a needed directory, say /projects/toyStory2. This would only run it recursively through the one directory and would also be less likely to be stopped by permissions (so root wouldn't be necessary to destroy everything of value). Still, you gave a good breakdown of the ghost story that keeps us all awake at night.
Yeah, for some reason the working directory didn't even occur to me. the "-f*" and the fact that only Toy Story 2 was affected makes a lot more sense now.
