- NBC Studios, Tom Snyder's "The Tomorrow Show", May 7th 1981
The complete, 5 part segments :
Part 1 : Interview, conversations with Ken Kesey & Jerry Garcia
Part 2 : acoustic "On The Road Again"
Part 3 : acoustic "Dire Wolf" & "Deep Elem Blues"
Part 4 : Conversations with Garcia, Weir, Hart & Kreutzmann
Part 5 : acoustic "Cassidy"
LoloYodel Notes (2015) :
With time, it seems that the originally posted acoustic songs have now dissapeared ... "Deep Elum" is still there, "Dire Wolf" also (but the audio is false, it was taken from the "Reckonning" album) ...
Here, the audio quality is NOT the best (notably "On The Road Again") ... but that's the best I can do.
Tom Snyder was host of "The Tomorrow Show" (aired late nights from 1973 to 1982). It was a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview closer to a conversation. Very cool at the the time !
Now, regarding this evening's presence with members of The Grateful Dead, this was during a GD Tour break, between two Nassau Coliseum (Long Island) concerts and notably after the 5-6-1981 show, which was exceptional, and later became a "Dick's Picks" release.
Jerry is on fire on this one
904DirtyDuval
904DirtyDuval on this one?! the first stage jerry ever played on is probably still warm to the touch! :)
Yeah he is
Yuss!!
I've never seen a better live video of the Grateful Dead.
Props to Tom Snyder. He made the band feel comfortable and in good spirits the whole interview.
What a pro!
Ace Frehley agrees LOL
Tom was a radio DJ and definitely respected the music form...good for saying.
He is 100% a dead head
He was great
When guitar players think they have to be perfect I show them this. Jerry makes a lot of technical mistakes but his playing is still so beautiful. Nowadays people forget that real music is performed by real people; it has feeling and comes from a magical place outside of oneself. All the producing stifles a lot of that magic.
Are you serious? You must know nothing about Jerry's ability if you think he has technical mistakes. Like technical mistakes compared classical guitar? What could you possibly be trying to say?
@@IndependentEnergyHawaii He does drop a note here and there. But the playing is so organic and natural that of course, no one cares and it's not even technically an issue. It's just real playing. The other option is he is some kind of guitar playing robot that never has a single flaw in anything he plays. Which doesn't seem in line with the Grateful dead or they're way of thinking about music.
100% anytime you are improvising and making it up on the spot you are literally using heart and spirit to feel the notes rather than memorization. This is why the dead is so good, literally every musician has such exquisite feel.
Ha I feel you. 'm always defending Jerry because they have the reputation of being a "jamband." But Jerry really was an exquisite student of the guitar, as good as any jazz musician imo, if a little different in delivery.@@IndependentEnergyHawaii
for sure. Jerry is always feeling and reaching for different areas and notes. He may play a technically bum note but then he resolves it. You can't improvise on the fly without it.
If I ever need to explain to anyone how Jerry was equally, if not better, at acoustic than electric guitar, all I do is play them this video... nuff said. MONSTER ACOUSTIC PLAYER.
Banjo first and foremost...
Can't believe so few views. This is great. Sounds tight, everyone clicking
Excellent version of Dire Wolf
@@chriscarlson516 Deep Elem too
Classic stuff. I remember Tom Snyder show!
I have a gig tomorrow and I’m playing this song now.
How did the gig go?
Tears of joy pour down my cheeks......brilliant.
Why won't it let me like this a hundred more times? Why?
This is is the best they ever did it!!!!!!
Pure fire!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
wonderful time for the band... I wish they would have done many more shows with acoustic AND electric sets. Jerry leads with joy and the band follows...
I miss Tom, Taint no TV like the way Tom did TV. Wow Jerry making the acoustic sing.
one of the best tv performances i've seen from the dead.... also can't believe how few views on this... thanks for the uploads!
Bless his soul and the band affected all our lives. There's nothing like a Grateful Dead Concert experience.❤
Love the acoustic Dead!
In my opinion this is the best version of Dire Wolf other than the studio version. That rare Dead song that they did not improve by playing live
I agree man Jerry 🎸 talks to me
The one on Dicks Picks I like a lot too... Edit: I think DP #4
1970 hawaii is pretty good too
I agree. I think this is the finest live version of Dire Wolf ever. It works perfectly as an acoustic number and Jerry has a real old-timey tinge to his voice, and he seems delighted with this performance.
@@knuteboy3778 I think the 1st song off Reckoning is better, but this one is awesome too
its awesome to see how much fun they're having!
SO GOOD.
The grateful dead are playing and they're almost sober -- now that's something you don't see everyday! they sound at their peak :)
@@Sleepy_Alligatorare you implying they never were 'almost sober'?
cant deny the awesome piano and guitar on this
gosh if that ain't the sweetest voice I ever did hear
It sure is. And Lawrence, Jerry’s voice would disqualify him from crap talent shows like American Idol and the Voice. Think about that for a bit and despair of modern music.
This show is what got me into the Dead. Tom Snyder, or his staff, really did have excellent taste.
You see the spirit in Jerry right here.
I said my prayers and went to bed 🛏
there having fun...lot of smiling..thanks guys for many many years of shows...I loved them
soooo good... the end of Jerry's 'second' voice.
2023 and still awesome
I am so happy to have rediscovered this video, this is the acoustic Jerry we needed. The whole band is just cohesive as hell and vibing. I feel like the reason I can’t get behind Dead and Co. is because it feels more robotic, John Mayer is a great guitarist in his own right just a different style.
Brilliant!
2 of my favorites
Much Love Jerry!!! We miss you so much brother!!!
That was a mighty number
Mickey got a little groove going!! Jerry was smoking on that dreadnought. Country is home for Jer even though he kills everything!!
Nice
Trying to even realize what they're singing about. 10 Y.O. my first television. My own room. Daddy's NEW HOUSE. ...
No idea how life would be with my thoughts and dreams. But like Jerry said. Ashes turned into dreams
One my favorite albums of all time and correct me if I'm wrong but it was Jerry +John Kahn in a little musical ensemble. titled;
"Oregon state prison "
GEM!
“I beg ya, you don’t murder me. Please don’t murder me!” Great number for school talent shows.
Maybe the best rendering of this song
Anyone else notice how the equipment around them is shifting at times...that's pretty wild
Jerry in a blazer? this is prime dead trivia
🔥
Jerry on acoustic aka "heaven"
This is a few years after his trip to Apache Junction...
Oh yes! Me likey!
Missing Pigpen RIP
remembrances
🍔 begniiff if you will please please don't murder me I love this song. When you know these you had on the cassette you know you're old I'm so grateful for UA-cam sharing memorable moments I know Jerry would love that 😇😳❤️😻💕🤗
how the hell does he get that tone
you need an acoustic with an electric out, just plug it in direct, preferably to an interface/mixer & monitor for cleaner tone! hope that helps.
God I miss Jerry
❤️❤️❤️✨⚡️🌹💀🌹⚡️✨❤️❤️❤️
They're so good. I love this.
Pleaaaaaase don’t murder me. Always Grateful 🤙⚡️💀
Great. Very relaxed performance, they're having fun. I wish they'd mic'd the guitars instead of plugging them in though, piezo pickups just always kind of wreck it for me. Otherwise--perfecto!
3:10 guitar #1 is ready for the outro. Guitar #2…Oops.
Is this ripped from the DVD "Tomorrow Show Tom Snyder's Electric Kool Aid Test?" Anyone know if the quality is any better on that DVD? Thanks!
That sounds like a nice dvd
Why did Jerry do drugs. He seemed so much happier when he was clean
Fluff Head sad to say jerry wasn't clean here probably. also sad to say jerry loved the drugs :( but we all have our demons! nevertheless , a brilliant and magical human being :)
it's not sad jerry loved drugs, drugs aren't demons either, leave drugs alone!
I'm laughing at the idea of him being "clean"... did you know him personally?
Jerry is in throes of his Persian addiction here. He just hides it well.
Too bad it's in mono... Love to hear Phil from my subwoofer!!!
Jerry talks about this Tom Snyder performance here at 16:45 ( the whole interview is great):
ua-cam.com/video/2QBJ8pBdpao/v-deo.html
Why wasn't Phil a part of the interview??
Hello, Simply because he did not want to be there. Not because of Snyder, not because of Weir nor ... Kesey ? just because he was a "free" man ....
Phil was off having a Heineken
Give it up to the dead. Making happy accidents out of their songs.
Also Jerry rips the crap out of that guitar.

Great... it's not that I like Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bill Kruetzmann or that third rate back up rhythmless guitar player but... I love Tom Snyder♡.
On account of consulting him about it, he'll hand it over to the other guy. Signed: Jehovah...
I'm just always struck by how overmatched Bobby was as a musician amongst these guys banging away on that Ovation a five year old sounds better yeah I said it
Never heard this before...Great stuff
