@@mqib681Yes, and it is also wrong. I get the managing bathroom scheduling part but in my class my students can go to the toilet whenever they have to. The only requirement is that they show that they have been working or paying attention.
If implemented correctly your students won’t misuse your trust. And even if, I rather have some students fool me and get 3 minutes of free time than forcing a student with a full bladder to work. Not to mention the risk of a student on their period asking.

I understand our ballet teachers want us to pay attention, but needing permission rather than finding an appropriate time for water is insane. • @KatieM786

Having water breaks with permission is normal for all the sports and dance I've ever been part of (including, but not limited to, ballet, gymnastics, karate, Irish dance, aerial and trampolining). Whether child or adult classes, it's just basic courtesy to the teacher and the other members of the class who you might disrupt or distract. It's really not a big deal

  • @Jhddtukbdd87542

Even with kids, yawning and hands on hips aren’t disrespectful but just natural reactions to strenuous exercise. Ballet instructors are wild with their expectations of students (I say this with 13 years of dance training in jazz, lyrical, modern, Tap, hip-hop and ballet). Private studios are just as strict about this stuff. True disrespect I understand (i was that sassy girl in pink tights chatting it up during barre& combos once upon a time 😂), but it can be taught that yawning etc should not happen on stage. Dancers can be taught to separate their practice mindset from performance mindset. “Bad” habits don’t have to transfer to performance time if good etiquette is taught.

I think I'm the nightmare of some of these teachers. I'm an adult ballet student and I was told I was being disrespectful 'cause I didn't understand a correction. The teacher told me to correct my arms, and I told her I didn't understand, the teacher went full crazy and went like : this is not the first time you're disrespectful !
She thought I was giving her an attitude, cause I was confused and I appeared annoyed.
She told me off like I was a schoolgirl in front of the whole class 😂
She also made a remark when I was yawning once.
I was pissed. I am 33 yo, completely obsessed with ballet. So I really take it seriously, and I really want to understand. But I'm not in class to feel like I'm back to school...
At the end of the class she apologised. But it completely destroyed the trust I could have in her. I liked her classed but it got weird after that

That sounds horrifying. I'd also like to take adult classes but not under those conditions... I don't get it, if you only start as an adult you're usually not there to become a professional but rather for the fun and love of dancing. Not meaning you can't still take it seriously and try your best but that also makes it completely unwarranted for the teacher to act like a drill sergent

With adult ballet classes, teachers forget that the students aren’t there by the choice of another adult. They forget that the students can leave/quit of their own will, affecting the studios income. Adult dance students should be treated as adults, given how pricy classes can be and how that income can keep studios afloat.

Hmmmm, I get the mocking the teacher or being deliberately disrespectful. Those are an automatic NO, and go sit in the hallway. But, getting water or having your hands on your hips??? Yeah, no. I don't agree with those. Also, as sometimes dangerous health issues can cause you to have trouble thinking and unable to pick up the demonstrated combination (hello, chronic severe migraines that cause disorientation, etc!), I also don't agree with that. I put my hands on my hips between combinations all the time to try to keep my torso upright while huffing and puffing. My muscles are literally shaking, and having trouble working. So, its not disrespect. It's exhaustion. As for drinking water, the entire class just sweated out gallons of fluids before center even started, so of course they're thirsty! Why hold hydration hostage because the teacher thinks they MIGHT be getting disrespected? In a ballet school setting like this, I keep seeing a massive power trip being enacted upon people who feel like they can't argue for their own well-being.

Since everyone is talking about the water one . As a dancer honestly it’s reasonable because 1 people get distracted getting water and 2 it’s kinda not fair like you could only drink water but everyone else needs to wait? (In my dance studio) Since we have a lobby in where we keep our stuff (which is outside) it’s even more logical that the teacher doesn’t want you walking in and out.. also yes water bottles are often not allowed on the dance floor reason being spillage… so at the end it’s more than just thirst 😭😭

for those who haven't take classes, the idea of not drinking water is not just because of the toilet, but because you're supposed to build resistance and stamina even dehydrated, to not sweat (cause it's not something ballerinas do) and to make sure you can stand in a place for several hours without needing to go to the bathroom. At least that's what several teachers have taught me. I never considered ridiculous thought, it's just one more rule. And if you are in need of water, you can drink before or after class. And now I know I will never take an adult ballet class. 😂 I stay guzzling water and try as I might sometimes I don't coordinate my body with my brain and I just don't get the steps. I can be coordinated and I'll have moments of this almost lucid perfection but when it goes it goes and it goes away for a while.

if they catch their students yawning they should probably open a window, like I'm sorry my body is trying to get oxygen.

I'm an unmedicated neurodivergent adult and I started ballet at 16 of my own accord, didn't want to but knew it was a good idea so I forced myself, and the only reason I would leave class is because I'd start crying because I was frustrated and didn't know how to execute the movement...7 years later and I don't leave class anymore and have more good classes than bad and I love ballet and take beginner level and intermediate! If you want it stick with it because they'll be improvement even if you're not seeing it yourself! 😁❤️

I don’t understand why yawning, crossing your arms or putting your hands on your hips is a bad thing? I remember being asked to leave with many of the other things but not those things. I can’t control when I yawn. And telling someone how they can or can’t hold their body in in between moments of class. Am I supposed to just stand there like a board with my hands by my sides? I am serious,

Those are the rules. You don’t like them, leave. It’s called “discipline”. More people need this! Having fun is important. But know the difference between fun and professional timing when you’re trying to achieve perfection.

So...basically public school in the 80s.
People never used to need to drink water on demand. You drink it when you had your breaks. Yea, you're thirsty, but you're not going to die.

I understand all of those things. Disrespecting the teacher is obvious. But being thirsty in a class where you do strenuous exercise and not being allowed to drink water because the teacher doesn't let you, for some obscure reason (power move?), that for me is unacceptable. Unless it implies having to get out of the room to get water, that I understand, it can be distracting, but simply having a gulp of water from a bottle, come on...that should be allowed.

Athletes have died because their coaches forbade them from accessing water. Any coach/teacher that does that should be immediately fired.

If you are at a professional ballet school, then you are expected to act professional. Rolling your eyes, talking and goofing off. Should know better to not do any of that. It is disrespectful. Really doing that sort of stuff at any school or work environment is disrespectful. Rules are rules. Chances are you know the rules first day of class.

The teacher denying water should be the one sitting out in the hall. She needs a break to think about her God complex.
Also, someone said that it disrupts the class if one gets water. If training for having to go without water during a performace makes sense, then wouldn't the 'water disruption' be good training in concentrating? What if someone else f* up on stage? Concentration lost? And what if there is a commotion orvdisruption in the audience?
(No, these do not make sense. If they do for the one, but not for the other, then it's only a thing of not triggering the teacher's complexes.)
