Why Dollar Tree is raising prices as high as $7

- Discount giant Dollar Tree is raising prices again, with some items as high as $7. The reason stems from a combination of inflation and an influx of higher-income customers who can better afford the items. NBC’s Christine Romans reports for TODAY.

Why even bother going there instead of Walmart then?
A lot of us don't live near Walmarts (I reside in NYC and Boston). They're banned in NYC and nowhere near me in Boston either.
You ever think that Dollar tree might be(much) closer? Think before posting!
or the 99 cents store.
Amazon.
Unfortunately Walmart isn’t a choice for everyone. For example, me! There is no Walmart in Pittsburgh that I can get to without a car.
Walmart is cheaper than many Dollar Tree items. Dollar Tree is pricing themselves out of business.
You are right. I think that Dollar Tree is going to eventually go out of business becauseof this.
Dollar Tree is already closing locations and with this price hike it may put them out of business all together.
Truth
In Memphis, Walmart is worst than Dollar Tree. Less shootings and no problems with self checkout. $1.50 to $7 isn't really bad and I live near a few dollars trees
Long as it fools people thinking the sign match’s their pricing
Go ahead and raise items to $7. You lost me as a customer.
They're not raising prices on existing items to $7; they're bringing in new items at that price point.
They had 5.00 items now will be 7.00. And what 1.50 instead of 1.25! 🤔
and than exlude tax or or is it 7 with tax@@Linda-in9ns
😂Right!
Seven Dollar Tree
She said "once you have the customer in the store they will make that purchase". 🤣 nooo. I've walked out of stores before if I knew an item was cheaper somewhere else
We don't shop at woke stores
Not necessarily
I will walk out in a heartbeat 😂
Dollar Tree catering to well off people, so poor people have to suffer. Talk about sleazy, profits over people. Disgusting.
Time to stock up
I think it's more like they are ripping off the well off people because they think they have the extra money.
Dollar Tree still has low cost items. I seriously it doubt it caters to well off people. Have ever been to a dollar tree?
You nailed it 100%
No it's inflation. We're adjusting to what a new rich is.
I’m no longer going to Dollar Tree. I’ll just go to Walmart now. Dollar Tree is no longer a bargain.
I agree
Never was
Run down
Junkier stuff
Over priced
Walmart much better value
Just because a person makes $100,000 per year doesn't mean they want to spend it high price items. That was a stupid ignorant question to ask.
Dollar Tree isn’t the only one that has increased their prices and decresed thr quality and the amount. People are paying more for rent, utilities, auto insurance amd so much more. If I'm making 100, 000 dollars per year i steall need to save money to afford other thingsamd to able to save for emergencies and unexpected expenses.
And you pay taxes, not like these ingrates!
@@a.e.7988 yes a lot of tax. Especially if you’re single with no children. How dare we exercise restraint and control our lives.
If it’s $7, why choose them over Walmart? Their quality is cheaper
Didn’t love her term of chasing cheap. I suspect there are plenty of of customers who are very tight for money and places like the dollar store mean the difference between affording something or going without
Remember going into Dollar Tree for 2 for $1.00 candy bars? I miss those days. :(
Also Cards now all 1.25🙄Dollar Tree now an Illusion by Name👀
Ha ha some of us remember Penny candy
@@kaydoren688 When I was a little girl, we had a book titled "A Penny for Candy " I loved reading that book and imagining all the candy the children could buy. Thank you for reminding me of it!
The quality of the products was much better too
Something I'll never forget 25yrs old as I type this comment amazing some people paid a penny or Nickle at one point in time
Greed in this world is insane.
I’m very upset about it.😡And it shows literally in EVERYTHING now.🙄
It's not greed having a store that size you have huge overhead, the average shopper has no idea about that part.
From the dollar store to the 7 dollar store. Inflation. More like price gouging.
They should ban them from using Dollar store name or advertising as a dollar store 😡
I don’t know about anyone else, but I thought the point of dollar tree was to sell items at a dollar! The base price was increased to $1.25, now it’s going to be $1.50 so I hope their new rich customers, making over six figures, love shopping there because at $1.50 I’m out!
AGREED! 💯
Talk to the people that voted for the people in power dude. Prices increase like this because of idiotic moves made by politicians.
They’re not “catering” to rich customers, people making that kind of money are now shopping for items with lower prices because the economy is trash and that 6 figure salary isn’t worth anywhere near as much as it used to be.
@@jjc5871man do you realize how many inflations this company has gone through and still kept their prices the same? They are changing the prices because of all the data they are receiving from social media diy’ers. These stay at home moms don’t have nothing else to do but shop at the dollar tree and make stupid cheap home decor projects. It’s a new market that is clearly making them a ton of money. How else do you think they know about this new subset of wealthy customers they have?? Be real dude and think logically. They want to focus on ringing these DIYers pockets dry. 🙄.
They're getting to greedy.
*too
It also might be because they can’t afford to keep prices at $1
Dollar Tree's CEO is Rick Dreiling, appointed in Jan 2023. Total yearly compensation is $136.56 million.
Yep that's where all profits go. He should be paid 135,000.00 and the employees should be making 20+/hr so they can pay rent/mortgage, buy food, pay for health insurance, etc.
Bet he doesn't pay taxes either
Ah a demoncrat. No wonder so greedy
@@JCcreates927 I highly doubt dollar tree could afford 20$ per hour, the store would close.
@@Ghost-fe1vpif they knew how to do it, no. In-and-out still offers low prices for their food ($2 for burgers) and last I was there, they were hiring for $18.50 an hour. And guess what? The place is always packed. But it’s probably also because it’s only in certain locations, but still.
I won't be shopping there anymore. Mostly cos you can't return things. I rather shop at Walmart, at least I know if I return something, I can get my money back.
If you save the receipt they allow exchanges. They used to not sure anymore.
@@P.90.603😂😂
You can return but you know what if you don't want to buy there then don't but you have to member all is going up ever where they have employees wanting more pay and I wonder lights water and theft has went up for them
I liked it better when everything was $1.not exciting to go there now.
I live in Georgia. I personally know a few multimillionaires that shop at all the cheap stores. As well as goodwill and eBay. Listen, if you aren’t friends with a wealthy person you may not believe it, but “old” money people tend to be very frugal and tight with their money for the things they actually need. However, they will spend big to travel the world.
Very true. My boyfriend is like that. Very frugal with his purchases, but spends so much money traveling the world.
Side note; he never shopped at a dollar tree until I took him to one. He couldn’t believe that everything was a dollar.😂
And I’m sure they will now start shopping back at Walmart. It’s not that no one believes it’s, it’s just that it defeats the purpose of them shopping there if everything is now going to be competing with Walmart and amazon prices.
@@TriggaTreDay EXACTLY!!! Dollar Tree “WAS” uncomplicated shopping.
just call it Inflation Tree and keep it pushing
Lol.
😂😂😂true
Hahhaa
I just like how they mix in the $5 items with the $1.25 stuff and you dont know it till it all get rung up. The $5 stuff should stay in that section but thats how they trick you.
If you're looking for an item that's a dollar, if they start packaging peanuts individually, you'll find those for a dollar. There's also Five Below. Plenty of stuff there for Five Above. If rich people are really shopping at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and the like, they must be parking their new Mercedes Benzes down the street. I don't see them crowding the parking lot.
5 below is also getting greedy. Not supposed to be $5 n above
Five Below used to be a good deal a few years ago. A lot of items have increased in price well over five dollars. a lot Five Beyond. Dollar General got investigated for items not ringing up the same price as the sign. I do shop at Dollar Tree a lot, but I won't as much anymore on items that go to 7 bucks. I may still buy the bigger cambells soup cans if they go to a dollar 50, but I wouldn't pay 2 bucks a can or more.
They can’t possibly know the incomes of their customers. They just need to blame the price hikes on someone.
Luxury cars are not so popular among rich people nowadays. You could drive a Koenigsegg and they still wouldn't give you the time of day. Cars are transportation appliances that you use to go places, not objects of status or domination, at least, that is how richer folk increasingly see it, at least old money. Ask me how I know...
Our Dollar Tree stopped selling several products that I went in there to buy so rarely stop there these days. Now that they’re going up on the cheap crap they still sell, I won’t be stopping there all.
soon it will be 10 dollar tree
Did I miss the "tree fiddy dolla tree" already???
Or 5 dollar 💵 tree 🌲 where everything is $5
Just like what happened to five below becoming more five beyond prices.
Wait until November, when Biden steals the election again.
There have been a number of times I've gone to one of their stores and ended up not buying anything because what I wanted wasn't in stock and nothing else was compelling enough to get. Increases in prices make their selections even less compelling. The commentor saying "once they're in the store they will make a purchase" doesn't know what she's talking about lol
It works that way in 99.99% of cases.
But it gives you a point to talk about how you are better than the mind control.
So rename it $5 to $10 store
I can remember a time when we had five and dime stores. Everything cost five or ten CENTS.😢
there is absolutely no point in ever going to dollar tree again. I hope they like bankruptcy
Too bad. Not much at the DT that is worthy of price increases. Hopefully people show their displeasure by not shopping there anymore.
Everyone that goes to the store is struggling in some way! How are people supposed to buy food now? What makes them think people with lots of money go their? Some of the items at dollar tree are not even worth $1.25 please keep that in mind.
I agree with you.
They made that up about rich people shopping at $ Tree. Anything for views and likes.
Inflation caused by the US government made them raise the prices.
Saying "they have more rich clients now" is a way of hiding that their president "biden" is the person to blame.
It's just democrats hiding for other democrats.
They are on social media looking at all of these well-off DIYer stay at home moms makes garbage products just fun and they are now wanting to make those same mom groups pay more for the same or lower quality items. It’s not right. But they are going to be in for a rude awakening if Walmart comes out with a Dollar aisle.
The reason more affluent customers shop @ The Dollar Tree is the same reason everyone else shops there; it's cheap. Simply having $ doesn't always equate to spending more $ elsewhere. Most people ♥ a bargain; regardless of your socio-economic status. You don't get rich & stay rich by wasting your $ on overpriced items.
Then i guess they won't be happy either when the prices go up.
This is laughable. I dont know about anyone else but the only reason why i went there was the price of goods. So no i wont be goung there any longer
That defeats the purpose of going to Dollar Tree. 🧐🙄
Won't step foot in that place now, hate greed
Still no complaints from me about this store. It is totally amazing to me that I can even get household things that I need for $1.25 and for one dollar for years. I’ve shopped at this store for decades and it has done alright by me for many many years. The astonishing concept of anything for just one dollar has more than equipped me and my home. I’m so glad to have been able to access it.
ITS CALLED HIGHWAY ROBBERY.. I THOUGHT GOUGING IS ILLEGAL.. 😡🤬
They are doing it with everything. Even housing including rent. The government should pass a law to stop the ridiculous price increases.
How does Dollar tree have access to customers income?
exactly, good question
My exact question!!
Corporations hire 3rd party companies that do market research for them. With social media its extremely easy for them to know who what when and how. Social media is way worse than people can ever imagine. And no, before a social media junkie comments : "But but, UA-cam is a social media, and yet you are here!" to justify its social media addiction, nope. UA-cam is not. We all know exactly what S.M platforms im referring to.
@@J.A.Z-TheMortal well dang.
People well off shop at Tree for the same reason those struggling go to Tree... Duh.
I think we’ll call it greedy tree
Lol.
exactly!
All the corporate people want is their money they don't really care about anything else.
Like every human?
No point of going here then. This company is dying. Who are these experts!! Whos going to dollar tree making a 125k a year!! Everyone i see at dollar tree look rough.
You’ll be surprised in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey I’ve seen it
I don't shop there now
I don't even go on the aisles with the things higher and wont.
family dollar, and dollar tree hasn't had anything for $1 in years !!!
A few weeks ago there was an article how prices were reverting to $1 on many items. Most here now offer items to $5. Lost me when the hike went to 1.25. Something psychologically about the 25 cent increase.
They said that when it went up to $1.25. It was that way for a couple of months, then everything was $1.25.
Nothing inside dollar stores are even worth 7 dollars
Videos like this is why UA-cam hid the dislike count.
This store is single handedly breaking the narrative.
"Chasing cheap" is the news crew on this video. Gross.
So your Senior Citizens who rely on these cheap prices just to put something in their bellies is now going to suffer further because of others greed 😞 smh
It’s not “Dollar Tree” anymore, it’s “7 Tree” and 5 below will be “20 below” 🙄
Stop calling this inflation. It’s more profits for companies/shareholders.
It's sad most of the items sold at dollar tree are expired and you still want to change the prices
True. once I bought a frozen pizza that was expired when it was Deals and became Dollar tree later.
My husband and I bought sleep aid medication from there once that was expired....we should have checked so that was somewhat on us 🤷♀️
Where am i going to get my crappy items that break after using once now?
Try temu. They are just as crappy
Temu is good and they cheaper to at 50 cents
@@gerard7417 they are just cheapy made trash as well is all.
I think some of Temu's itens are a hit or miss.
Dollar tree will be out of business very soon.
If I was making $100,000 a year, I definitely wouldn’t go to a dollar store. I would buy higher quality items from elsewhere, which would be a better investment in the long run.
I am tired of having to walk all the way to the back of Walmart for things. These Superstores aren’t all that. The employees are incredibly rude and so are half the customers. So for this reason yes-I will pay a cpl of cents extra for items just to save my sanity at smaller sized stores.
That is exactly why I shop at smaller grocery stores when I only need a few items even though I will pay more. Sometimes I just want to get in and get out.
I will not shop at Dollar tree anymore. They’re getting too greedy.
So the rich screwin up the poor like always
I won't be going in their doors at those prices; cheaper and better options out there. I hope they choke on their greed. I'm out.
Remember when chicken wings were cheap and then the rich started eating them?
Christine Romas is what's wrong with this country. She makes $7million a year. Sorry if we have to shop around for cheaper alternatives. If it were up to her, we would have to shop in segregated grocery stores too.
thanks to state tax, nothing will EVER be $1.00
From Dollar Tree to Rip Off Tree🙄Using wealthy shoppers as an excuse to price gouge, total BS🤨Another sign of Corporate Greed and sucking the fun out of shopping there, we shall see how long customers put up with having their hard earned dollars played with🤔
Holy crap you have no clue what price gouging means 😂
@@NotANameist 😌☕️When you have a store that Advertises every item at One Dollar then does a 25% markup years later no in between then about a year or two later wants to mark some of there items 5-7 dollars each, Absolutely it’s price gouging In This Situation when they advertise themselves to start off by sucking customers in at One Dollar Items for this particular type of store for years which was catering mostly to the low income now stating because they know higher income folks are customers too, let’s act like everyone is at that level and charge what a lot of other stores are for sale prices🙄Even at a dollar there were supplies you could find a few cents cheaper other places but this particular store advertised pricing everything at one dollar is now a sham if it’s raising its prices at different levels like everyone else is a Dollar Tree to Rip Off Tree Sham👺
When it changed from $1 to $1.25 I stopped calling it Dollar Tree. I called it Dollar 25 tree. 🤣 Then they started adding the other priced items.
I really do not understand this line of thinking by them. The whole idea of Dollar Tree was not just the $1 price point but just the fact that you knew everything was the same price. When they went up to $1.25 per item I was disappointed but still shopped there alot. However I pretty much stopped going when they raised to $3 and $5 items last year. Now with this change I might not shop there at all. They have essentially turned into Dollar General which they already own anyways. Just keep the model of the stores separate. I would often go in to pick up a few items I needed but then ended up then walking out with $20-$30 worth of stuff. Now there is not really a reason to go into the store in the first place if I don't know if the items I intend to pick up will be cheap or not.
This country is a joke. This is not the America I was born into or raised in. This is CORPORATE GREED! POLITICAL GREED! RICH GREED!
Dollar Tree stuff is worth only .99…🤗
So... they're closing Family Dollar locations and turning Dollar Trees into them!?! A lot of us who spent 4+ years in college relied on them to meet our basic needs for a long time. It was great to know that you went into a Dollar Tree store there were no "price games". I'm back to being a student again (AI, 50 yrs old) and have gone to two DT locations near Harvard and MIT (one has a "Plus" section and everything else is regular). As long as they keep the sections separate I think they will do well!
Their products are not that good. Might as well just go to Target, and Wal-Mart then.
Just like when the 99 Cent store transformed into the 99 Cent plus store.
And they raised their price to $1.49. and now they are closing. I stopped going when they did that. Bcuz I could get things cheaper at the dollar tree. Now they are going to be $1.50. I think they are doing this bcuz 99 cent store is closing.
People can't never leave nothing alone now days
You mean greedflation. Also, walmart is cheaper than dollar tree these days, and for some items, grocery stores are even cheaper.
They want you totally dependent on the government. Don’t do it
I went here yestarday before knowing this. Everything on the shelves still say $1.25 but some of the items ring up as $3.25 especially items that are not worth that much.
And when those higher income shoppers actually figure out it’s cheaper to get most of those items (including the $1.25 items) from amazon, Walmart, and or temu then “dollar whatever store” will be feeling the burn. These fools are only basing this crap off of all of the diy stay at home moms that do tons of unnecessary projects. Well if you start upping your prices you will no longer be the go to store for those cheap easy to get items. Some stores need to learn how to stay in their lane.
I havent seen $100,000 a year people at any dollar tree 😂😂😂
So much for my hobby supplies for a decent price
Once you learn how much it actually costs companies to have merchandise made, it makes you hate spending much more than that on stuff. Most things at dollar stores cost less than a dollar to make due to using overseas factories. This is price gouging, plain and simple
Now this is outrageous.
I quit Dollar Tree four years ago.
So they’re abandoning their core customers who have kept the store successful for decades in pursuit of consumers making $100,000. Give them a couple of years they’ll be closing down locations FAST. You know greed is at Al all time high when the Dollar Tree is sticking it to people.
They are shooting themselves in the foot with the increases. Places such as Target and Walmart are selling essential everyday items such as name brand toothpaste, etc. for 99 cents. Dollar Tree just no longer works on a lot of things.
Deal with it America.
I won’t shop there anymore , it’s getting ridiculous, I miss the truly one corral days.
I don’t like the long lines at Dollar Tree 🌲 and the high prices. It is just ridiculous!
They brought this on to themselves. They bought out a failing company while expanding too fast. They hurt themselves by stretching too thin. Seen it happen to many times...like Macy's buying Robinson's-May, Sears buying Kmart, Starbucks creating too many stores in one area. Where I live there is four of them in a 15 mile area space. There seems to be to many different standards for stores. They are beginning to go down the same path as 99cent store. One is making sure things are stocked and cleanliness. Two of the 99 cent stores by me are nasty and nobody cleans. Dollies full of boxes are sitting in the middle of ales. The one I really like is even closer and it's so clean and nicely stocked. Need to have evaluations on stores more often and surprise visits.
Then items this high they better allow you to start returning items and getting a full refund.
I've cut down shopping there once they went to $1.25. If I can get it in bulk cheaper, I'll shop elsewhere. Believe it or not, some store brands are higher.
Ever since it went up to 1.25 I don’t even go to dollar tree anymore
Good will raised prices on donated items, if that's not something, I hush 🤨😄
why are people that make 100K shopping at dollertree, that is really a stupid question. Is like discriminating a person who seems like they are homeless only because they accessed a high price store like Gucci.
Pay $7 for travel size items? No Thank you 😂.
walmart is loving this😂😂😂😂
Maybe rename it Hamilton Tree with everything being $10 or less. Or Jackson Tree for $20 or less.
Yet another store i wont be shopping at...sad times.
I was recently at dollar trees. There were still lot of items that cost $1.25, no $1 items. $7 merchandise was probably the high end.
I have found that we can buy better quality for things at other stores in the past year. As price goes up, I will not be going to Dollar Tree anymore. They need to change the name, definitely.
Today everything costs more than a dollar
Is a 100k salary like a lot of money or something? Because I don't feel like it is
It's not. 100k is the new 50k. Maybe in some areas but, most places you need 200k.
In some areas a single income 100k home is lower middle class. Those are the ones most likely to need the budget choices.
How do they know what people earn???
Because they did a survey
