on aluminum, edge to edge, you need to make a heel. This means starting at approximately 5 cm and going towards the first end, then continuing the welding in the other direction from this first start to go towards the second end. There you are somewhat lucky to be in a fairly strong thickness, because not making a heel means taking a very big risk of having cracking on your start.

Thx I was having problems tig welding .063 sheet together, butt weld. Full penetration but lack of fusion underside, the sheet edges were still visible. Weld split open during testing. Experimented with flux on the underside and it worked very well. Destructive testing proved positive. I could not split the weld.. Some loss of visibility from the flux flare but I'll manage.

For "T" welds I had trouble getting a shiny puddle on both metals at the same time. Solvents didn't help. A 3" sanding pad on a battery right angle tool to roughen the edges was a game changer. Also lower gas flow helped stamp out arc wandering. Keeping the tungsten almost touching was also a game changer. Maybe a AC balance more on the penetration side would help but auto is working on my Precision 185 transformer machine. 👀

I recently took several weld certifications, in different processes, including various aluminium joints configurations. 2 questions:
1... Have you ever had slight porosity that wasn't caused from contamination? Mainly toward the end of a joint. (assuming it's been something to do with gas... 100% argon)
2... Is there any negative effects of lowering your heat/backing off on the rheostat significantly when approaching the end of a joint that's thin like it is in this case?
Gonna be getting certified here soon through my company and want to sort out all the little things before hand. Thanks to anyone who with any advice!

Hello Jody, I am trying really hard to follow all your tips and tricks on TIG welding and have gotten a little better until I bought a new Everlast 252 STi. Now I am in deep over my head and the manual just does not really help me know how to set up the settings for stainless and aluminum. Nobody has shown the AC setups for this welder and that includes your buddy Bob Moffit.
Is there any future plans for you to make a video on this machine and how to use the settings for AC TIG and pulse, etc.?
Oh by the way, I love the TIG finger. Since getting it I have not felt the heat while practicing with my little Everlast 141 STL.

You are a very talented tig welder sir. Very informative video. I just started messing with tig. I been a duel shield, stick an aluminum spool gun welder for 15 yrs. Tig is a different animal an I get discouraged feeling out of my element. I've gas welded with an acetylene torch an been told it's kind of the same motion but I've been struggling getting it to flow. Any pointers??

    • @leonardpearlman4017
      @leonardpearlman4017 5 років тому

I think it's a LOT like torch welding! There's a small point that I'm still struggling with in both: That it's important how far the torch is from the weld. In both cases it's easy and natural to pick up the torch a little, and it makes everything worse! If you have a foot-pedal that's a help as you slowly get the co-ordination, a torch switch can help also. That is, if things get too hot you can let off with the torch switch. Things want to be CLEAN, Jody mentions this in several videos. Our ancestors used to SCRAPE the edges of joints for high-quality welds. I mention this b/c a lot of times one is practicing on random scrap that has been sitting around, you really want to see shiny bright metal before you start welding! Then do as our leader says: let the cleaning action work a little, then turn it up and get a puddle, then put in some rod. There's no shame in just stopping at that point, and see what you got! If you like it, next time make another bead overlapping the first.... Another beginner problem practicing with little scrap is that the heat builds up QUICKLY, you really want several pieces in rotation. It's not as bad for Jody b/c he moves a lot quicker, has the TIG-finger, and knows how to let off on the power as pre-heat builds up. A beginner is putting a lot more heat in to the work to do the same weld! I am finding that maybe six aluminum chunks can be shuffled around, just put an inch or two of bead on one and set it aside. Don't give up! It really does respond to practice.

Also, you must be diliberate and intentional everytime you add or dab the filler wire...otherwise the filler rod just disentigrates...unlike stainless steel filler wire which can be left in the arc stream. Aluminum wire doesnt melt and drip into the puddle. If you dont add it right into the puddle, there will be problems.

Thank you for making these videos, sir. You have definitely been the impetus for my rekindled interest in welding as a hobby. I find your presentation very interesting and easy to follow; and your camera shots are impeccable. I have been watching your catalog of videos from as far back as UA-cam will show, and look forward to all your new videos as they come out. Simply put, outstanding.
I'm looking at the Esab Rebel 215ic as my first multiprocess welder. I know it's only DC; but I figure I can always run a spool gun if need be if I ever run into the need to work on aluminum. Any thoughts on this?
God bless you, and continued success in your future endeavors, sir.

Hey Jody! (and welding community) a couple of questions from a non-welder wannabe....
one of the take-aways from your videos and many others is that a perfect, or near-perfect weld is the weld resembling stacked dimes....and from some YT sources, skilled welders don’t grind their welds...no need to. BUT...is there any time/occasion/instance where a weld can be ground without affecting the weld quality or strength?
next question: is there any time/occasion/instance where a secondary reverse-side weld is called for? like in a T-joint where one wants to be absolutely certain of the weld strength?
Really enjoy learning from your videos, Jody. Hope to someday get into this wonderful skill!

different situations call for different travel speeds but I think for most tig welding of sheet metal, moving about 1/8" per second is a good start. if you are just learning and practicing, a cheap harbor freight aluminum ruler placed next to the bead can be helpful.
