    Since this skipped The 12v / lighter plug by the cup holders, use a curved plastic pry tool to pry it up. Put something under the tool so it doesn’t dent the console surface.
    I taped the crap out of edge surfaces with painters tape to prevent scratches.
    My handle cover would NOT slide off, so I had to buy one separately.

      When you put the new ebrake on was the black piece loose. I’m waiting on a new handle as I couldn’t get mine off. Reason I’m asking is I have to lift the black piece up to it grabs the tooth or else it just falls back down. Or did I mess up the install?

    • @ajownz

      @@vaultz8924 the black piece is loose because it uses the spring and button to create tension. I also could not get the old handle off. I tried hammers and all kinds of things. Had to buy a new one.

  • @bass4108

    Really nice walk-through. My e-brake on my Golf had the problem with the button popping out and the brake would disengage. I replace the button a couple of times and used something to hold it in place. But something seems to have worn out to a point that the e-brake will not hold in place at all. Even with a brand new button it does not stay engaged. It's really not clear to me what part is failing. I think the cheap plastic button breaking may be a separate issue from something else wearing and causing it not to stay engaged. I would like to do this replacement but I just know I'll break a lot of things.

    • @RLT
      @RLT  3 місяці тому

      Surprisingly the plastics in the dash and center console are compliment enough that only one tab actually broke off. The part that’s giving way in the handbrake assembly is the little bit of black plastic that’s meant to retain the Ebrake button. It’s a very poor design imo and will probably break again in another 70,000 miles but for now it does solve the safety issue.

      I didn’t include it because it’s near impossible to film in a way that wouldn’t result in people damaging their center console. The only advice I can give you is to just be patience and go slow. You need to twist and angle the center console around the brake handle. On the old one the button removed itself. On the new one i believe you are supposed to use a small tool to press the tab down. Hey thanks for the video, Great job, my button broke, and from online reply’s the cost is about $120.00 for a New Parking brake assembly, and if you can replace it yourself, you saved a ton of money but if you get it fixed at a Dealer it’s about $600-$1,000, I researched this for days, and I just put some epoxy glue inside the button, made sure the spring was on and glued the button on, and works better than original , 5 mins and $6.00 for the GLUE, SO EASY, and if it ever fails Il just pull the button off, and replace the whole thing at the cost, it’s worth trying, mine worked great..

    man, this is a lot of work for a broken tab.
    mine broke, so that button came out flying, along with the spring itself.
    dealer said something like 900 dollars to do what you just did in this video
    i didn't want to do it.
    so what i did was, i used eletrical tape, went around the broke tab, 1.5 round, then put some strong glue on the tape surface, inserted the spring, pushed the button back, and with the button depressed, taped the button to the handle, allowed the glue to dry, thirty minutes later, it worked just fine, i know it is ghetto, but it works, and saved me a thousand bucks lol

      @@RLT This is also an issue on the Seat Leon Mk3 , which is basically a Mk7 golf under the skin. There is a guy on ebay now sells a simple kit to repair this without doing all that work. Basically a machined aluminium button, replacement spring and a grub nut that screws through a thread in the button to clamp onto that plastic tab - therefore not relying on the clip and not requiring glue. I have a slightly different problem in that the previous owner seems to have already done a similar repair using the plastic button, a nail and a bit of glue. So the plastic end has actually snapped where he put the nail in. I've now taken the button off and glued the plastic end back on. Then I intend to try applying the repair kit. But yes I agree it doesn't seem like a durable way to do a repair so thanks for this video I may need to return to it.

      To start I would check on a website that can match your cars exact model just to make sure you get the right part . My part number was “5G0711303” and that should fit most MK7 cars. If you buy the part and just do it yourself expect it to cost you around 140 dollars. If a shop does it it’s going to be a lot more as it’s at least an hours worth of work to remove the center console. I’d start by just googling the part number to see what you can find as the listing I used has since gone away. Good luck with your project and thank you for watching!
