OH GOD EXTRA INFO: This game was based off of a sci Fi tabletop RPG called AVA. AVA was created by the developers and has never been released, meaning that all this complex lore is from a game you can't play.
My mic bugged during the footage of me explaining this and I forgot to rerecord it so it never made it in. Not super important, but I think I reference this fact a few times so yeah.

    Fun fact :
Secreta Secretorum doesn't mean "secret secret" it means "bureau of Secrets" Secreta is Greco-latin and means secretariat in french and its a bureau that help at an administrative level.
It was called Secreta by the Byzantin Empire and its many "bureau" or Secretas or a Secretas. They were secreta of economic matters of juridic matters and so on, all located in the capital Constantinople.
So, in EYE, Secreta Secretorum is the bureau of Secrets, and they worked for the feds once so they're like the CIA of space future.

I bounced off E.Y.E. the first three times I tried it, but during one drunk friday night I decided to give it another go and ended up playing through 2/4 endings in the next two days. To me, the game's most critical flaw is simply not communicating with the player effectively. A weird cryptic plot is fine, but weird cryptic game mechanics that I have to look for a guide to understand are just not conducive to a fun game. Once I did understand though, it quickly became one of the best games I've played all year. It felt so great to finally get my stats high enough to feel like I was in charge of the fights rather than getting bullied by every enemy, and the more powerful weapons like the BK and the Hunting Machine were immensely satisfying to use. I am almost always more interested in the mechanics of a game than the story so I wasn't terribly bothered by it in this case. Getting enough agility upgrades to be able to bunnyhop around the maps was a great feeling of freedom so many "story-driven" games lack, and it served as motivation to me to level up more and keep playing. It did wear off around the 30 hour mark, I can't really see myself spending any more time grinding than I already have. One can only stand to kill the same cyberdemons and helicopters so many times. I would love to see an EYE 2 or perhaps an expansion or remake but I won't be holding my breath.

Loved this game so much. One of my all time favourites ever.
You are absolutely correct about everything. I love it for these mad flaws. No joke.
Anyway, you will have a much easier time if you exploit the research, levelling, stats, and augments pretty heavily.
So in the temple, you can visit stores and buy a multitude of cybernetic bio augments. In conjunction with researching specific things, you can really manipulate the system to make it much, much easier.
    I suppose that's why I love it.
The game is utterly broken to make it super stupid hard. But the tools it gives you allow you to break it even further to be really easy.
You need to break it, Teegs. Break it hard. Like a tiny insolent pistachio. Then gobble up the tasty crumbs!
EDIT: I don't think you mentioned it, but... Every time you die and are revived, you take permanent stat damage! Certain random stats will decrease FOREVER. The game punishes you for failing to break it's insane broken difficulty, and I loved it for this.
Thinking about it, it's entirely possible I've developed Stockholm Syndrome for this game.

I feel like this game is really hampered by its failure to communicate its own design.
I think that the best way to play it is probably as an MMO using the multiplayer.
That way you would be able to specialise to a role and mitigate the enemy's spawn rate until you get enough XP to become powerful enough to play the game solo, when you effectively become a hyper-powerful combat god who can traverse the enormous levels much faster.
It's kind of backed up by the story in that it's meant to be a recurrent sequence of your character in purgatory subjecting themselves to emotional torture until you learn that the principal characters are figments of your imagination and the actual setting and conflict presented to you is actually a misdirection and it's meant to be a character study in the vein of Silent Hill 2.

    • @TheCellarTaigenMoon
      @TheCellarTaigenMoon  2 роки тому +4

I didn't mention this because God I needed to cut some stuff out, but there's a pretty in-depth class system depending on which stats you spec into. These classes are all name-only depending on build, but it's pretty neat. Unfortunately, if you're playing solo, you're basically forced to be the all-rounder AKA Equilibrium Fist, because you have to invest in so many things evenly to keep up with the game. This also makes the issue of [SO MANY SYSTEMS] more overwhelming because you have to remember to keep putting points in so-and-so while upgrading these cybernetics while buying these PSI powers. I've heard that in multiplayer you actually _do_ get to specialize into different play styles. In fact, the primary fire of the medkit is to heal another player, like it's _made_ to be used in multiplayer.
You're spot on with the game not communicating it's design; to echo what I said in the video, if you go in with the right expectations and the right set up (plus you like the sandbox), you can have a great time

A lot of communication in franco society is non specific, implied and just assumed by all of us as a pan-franco paradigm. opposed to english society very specific, non implied and just unassuming messages that are often just direct expression rather than multifold ones like ours.
Its a bit harder to translate to a few conceptual and lingustic tricks and phrases, idioms, actual literal translations, etc. You can even see it in the way I write, a lot of us got a way to put lots of information textual form, it piles on and on and on, we can all do it quick, it leads to a fuckton of errors and sometimes terrible translation efforts or results though lmao.
Likewise our language is very complicated for english translators actually, its funny how a lot of the properly orthographed and retold french language idioms and words and even parts of your language that are straight up direct translations and loan words will just not be able to be directly translated well without a nuanced idea of the expressions for it (and there will be several ways of saying it that will all say different things in and amongst the main message). Its funny to a lot of franco viewers of anglo media to see our language very uhhh , badly used like that in your projects too actually hahahha.
Its funny thoughts and though... Anglophony and francophony often worked together on projects due to a lot of these opposite traits, complimentary and diametrically different ways of thinking and expressing ourselves and making great things that deal up the same analogous quality results, this is even reflected in the way people review EYE in english and the way people do it in french or even just the way anyone outside these two linguistic sphere interact with each other also got different and even analogous characteristics that also reflect this international anthropology.

    My notes.
I don't know why. Because I see when other people play the game when they die it shows their characters name in the upper right corner with a skull next to it. My character is called Ku. But when I die It shows Shinji. I never read anything in the library because... I don't like reading that much. But like that's a thing to add to the plot I guess...
The character creation reminds me of old infinity engine games where you rolled for stats.
I felt like the commander and mentor did kind of have a personality and reasons to side with either one. The commander felt like a don't think just execute orders type while the mentor felt more open minded and less married to his faction. The factions also. EYE feels like the Illuminati or something working for corporations and the powerful. The federation seems like just the generic uphold the statues quo government. The looters are interesting. Because usually they seem just like raiders, criminals or something but in the indoor cemetery you meet one who talks about a looter society that achieved direct democracy and communism or something and everything was utopian until they got shot to death by the federation.
You use the anti armor rifle a lot but not in the final mission where it would be very useful. The 50. can one shot a pillar if you give him a head shot. Which you can easily achieve by sneaking in with a cloaking device. They're cheap.

    • @JackWse
      @JackWse 12 днів тому

I'm pretty sure the death notification at the top of the screen is because it's built on source multiplayer... It's actually apparently fully co-op or something like that? It can be disabled though, although depending on which build it is, that could either be a console command, or something you have to mod.. usually in source engine, you can get away with editing text files for values like text.. although HUD can be a little more complicated.. usually the actual text being displayed isn't too much of an issue.
I'm pretty sure this was built on one of the later versions of source though, which makes things a little more annoying as they pack a lot of things into libraries that you can't access without a source code.. But I would be highly surprised if you couldn't download a fix to turn it off. I know it's the first thing I'm going to do when I reinstall it lol... I just can't remember it's been so long.
Definitely one of the benefits of the source engine is, unless they're actively trying to stop you like the hypocrites over at Black Mesa and crowbar collective.. it's an extremely malleable engine for little things, just by nature of the developers console itself, especially if it hasn't been pipeline updated alongside the valve standards, where things get removed and broken.
This is especially true if it has half life two bones, which this appears to... It gets a little more annoying and prohibited with games like vampire as that was built before being tapped in to a lot of that stuff.. at least if that's, like my understanding anyways and it may not be correct or entirely correct..
Most annoying thing about source engine is how much information was lost, despite having so much attention, more so than probably any other game engine in the modern next genera... And Valve wasn't really keen on communicating, although funny enough, there's more information I guess out there than any of these poor folk had working on the engine.. mostly on account of what it seems to be all the people using source engine like Gary Newman and whatnot, creating a sort of get wiki where they are constantly confounded by problems and pipeline updates that they never would find the answer to lol.

Do you think the ergonomic keyboards are why the used key was bound to enter? Also I love leaning too.. but q& e are bad keys for it, I almost wonder if that's one of the reasons that we don't see it as a standard like it should be.. since my key binds were crafted out of the experimental era of the late 90s and early 2000s LOL.. I always ended up using c and v cuz I could hit them with my thumb while not compromising my movement..
Considering that I started with the arrow keys, and slowly started moving my way over the board to the left over years lol I'm quite proud of my defaults.. it's just hard to play games where basic fundamental movement options are missing especially modern ones where the Fidelity seems to indicate that I should be able to do more, not less.
I did a little research as to what could be your performance problems, I couldn't find much.. but there was a common modern problem that apparently was introduced with a patch involving the tick rate or something. One of the reasons that source engine can scale so well framerate-wise with its physics and animations is how it sets up interpolation and whatnot.. but this can go horribly wrong when set out of skew and whatnot.. I'm not saying that's exactly what happened here but for some reason the general fix for it is to run the game as a multiplayer game with only one player.. apparently it's the exact same game but it fixes the stuttering.
just judging from the footage it looks like you might have a different problem but I don't know what it could be, looking at the forums it seems that performance issues started to drop off after hardware achieved 2015 and 2016 generation capabilities.. I've seen people run this pretty well with a 1050 TI, which makes me think there was something else going on... apparently the patch also reconfigured a lot of the stats and whatnot, added a lot of grinding.. which I wonder if you could roll that patch back in the options? And that apparently would fix the stuttering all together? Who knows.. but, bummer that you had to put up with the kind of performance it seems like you were.

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Windows 10, credit where it's due has done quite well with backwards compatibility.. there's still a lot of shenanigans, and especially with source engine depending on where in the pipeline this was.. or if it's lol still part of the pipeline which is usually not a good thing.
One thing that, well it could very well be a thing.. things like culling.. like you got to be really careful with source as you can have the same problem transfer over to the next save given how the game uses save states for the loading and level transitions.. I'm just kind of spitballing here lol but I'm very glad that things are better..
The loading times I've often wondered though.. I think I kind of want to test things out with some of my mod work on one of those X3D CPUs to see if that brute force cash has an effect.. The engine is so brutally single-threaded, or at least it would have been at the time, and it still is basically but.. It can be better with some of the more modern iterations that never really got a lot of love.
It's kind of a.. everything uses older instruction sets so you're not going to get a lot of benefit from modern CPU IPC focuses.. multicore is just actually not going to be a thing in any meaningful way for that.. and despite that you could probably fit the game in the ram that you have on even a low end computer lol.. it's it's only going to use a small amount at a time trying to stay with in very very ancient budgets...
Usually with this engine people opt for the short fast load segments.. But that depends on the way you're scripting is set up of course.. what you want to transfer between saves etc.. which is basically between levels lol... This seems to have been put together more like a mod anyways.. which is kind of a good thing in the end.. as you can have a lot of things that you can iterate on and are interesting without necessarily being efficient code.. But that is kind of an assumption.. But.. I mean lol..
But like I said above.. I would take this any day over the vast majority of modern games.. people just don't make interesting things like this anymore, they don't even think like that anymore to make games like this.. it's like a whole wipe out of a generation of thought process of what can and could be.

    1) Malus is an English word too, albeit less commonly used in everyday language - it's the opposite of 'bonus', and (just like bonus) it comes from Latin.
    2) I was put off watching the rest of the video by your replies in the comments section - "French is a nonsense language" isn't funny, it's just ignorant and xenophobic.

France, french people and franco and pan-franco ideology, industries and societies or individualists are often influenced by a few differing diametrically opposed facts to the english one. France is a crossroad of the european continent and has often used defensive tactics as a way of life, survival and even just personal vision of things that is shared amongst pan-franco diaspora. It is a bit diametrically opposed to anglophone's ideas of ranged combat and naval warfare, very diametrically opposed to francophone's ideas of defensive invasions, defensive plays and fortification holding on a level that is even verbal, as we often admit in a pan franco way that admit charisma, defense and honor are battle skills that level our warfare to a human affaire rather than a reactioanry and violent, barbaric and merely social animal-like ants or thermites or chimps do (we often refer to our words as fighting weapons, our debates as combats, as non violence until the first NAP violation, be it physical and verbal, as the franco world counts verbal provocations as assault and incitement to it often).
England and the english disapora worldwide have been so presently and constantly historically on a few opposite things to us which explained A LOT OF THE INCREDIBLE DIAMETRIC OPPOSITIONS BETWEEN OUR SOCIETIES (two solidarities working together for world domination often though, funny enough we are often and still are allies accross the board). this is all complementary, because ENGLAND is a naval crossroad often focused on offensive plays and situations that are overwhelmingly ABOUT winning without dying. JUST LIKE US.
but .. we do the opposite thing to the same effect, which is funny, since english people love to focus on everything and we love to focus on one thing and make it very good (then try to do that for everything else), a lot of francos do projects like that, its funny because the quality and force never suffers but it leads to a lot OF unique expression that are harder to reproduce and often lead to non standardized quality and artistic scenes within pan-franco world scenes.
The language of the game isn't in french ,its actually a super-fusion of latin, french and english and they are all made up for the game on the spot to make a "higher gothic modern language sci fi thing"
Yeah the translation does suffer from it, the voices aren't meant to be english or french.
uhhh, do remember, your language is 30% french, a lot of us don't bother learning it that much and our variable use of it includes many ways of ortographying things and how they are directly thought and phrase and word composition linked and related to our own history with your english language (funny enough, my family and ethnic Québécois group got direct ancestry linked to 8500 settlers at the end of new france populating north america with between 7 and 12 million french canadians which are all the same ancestor settlers stock from the same people that invaded england and made that happen AND ireland AND created the modern english-norman nobility and royal families ). In fact funny enough, one of the reason I believe my Québécois(s) kinsmen and kinswomen even got to that point is from being conquered by the british royal empire which is effectively the same race and ethnicity as us for the royal british family and nobility at least in norman and franco anglo norman lineages, to a few uncanny degrees our ancestors which settled new france were the same stock that was norman/briton and north western french. Its funny though we don't care for race and its mostly english people who do but the fact they kept us around from under 10k at conquest to millions worldwide and americawide these days when the effectively exterminated others and are still opressing a few to not flourish as much in any way or shape (natives in USA and canada is much akin to that, but they are often lowlife and criminal hivescums due to adopting neoliberal ideology instead of neonationalist ideologies like ours).
But yeah uh, I mean, it does have crap polish and translation, also one of our cultural quality is we don't care much for frivolous crap, nothing can be perfect, in fact its how a lot of us use language and how a lot of our expression get VERY honest and reciprocal. Personally I fucking love the combat, its excellent and vivid even if it is shitscan weapons from HL2, lmao.

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Yeah funny enough the Québécois are usually always primarily french in first language and then simply accept we live in a franco etnostate amongst 10x to 100x more anglophones as us so we often learn english quite fast, fluently and to the effect of just being able to pick up on a lot of subtle things from both world (often leads to us having pretty rude offensive reactions hahaha, although only 60% of the population speak english here and mostly as a second language, 95% of french canada in Québec speak french as their first). Here in north america a lot of us end up as a byproduct of both linguistic world with variable tendency to show more of one or another of linguistic social traits or just combinations and actually just wanting to express ourselves in any number of spectrums on that.
Heheh yeah its funny though a lot of us find all these parallel, explanations and even just intrusive analysis thoughts and things to say instantly and it is actually very hard to express some of that the way you guys do hahahah so you got your own strong point for some of the stuff I said was different I do envy (amongst a few others hahaha to be concise this time).
heheh, thanks for the review by the way, I found it very honest unlike others who reviewed it in english with uhhh, kiddy gloves to not burn out their audience I guess and incite them to play something they wouldn't enjoy ?
Its a good complete introspection and subjective take on it and I love those more than objective critical concept analysis that have less effects on the show in the game and more on the personal reviewer nitpick hahah. Video games are usually always pretty artful hazardous masterpieces of variable multifold happenings and great subjective conversation pieces and past times and you actually give credence to the way they are meant to be played and enjoyed by your style of reviewing it and how you showed you had fun with it still X) ...
You actually made me want to play it again even though I finished it like once completly with my best friend in coop after like 30 sessions of 60 hours of finishing the game 4 times O _O !!! I think youtube is a fun library for projects, I think video games are fun, you sound like you had fun making the review and even replying to people on it so I respect you for all of it X) thanks for the fav and reply hahaha

I think with games like this, the point that it hammers home is just how horrendous feature creep games like Duke Nukem: Forever are. This sounds like some kind of really round-about way to hit an unrelated target, but it isn’t.
When AA or AAA games with medium or large teams, and licensed engines and tools, start overbaking the living shit out of a game, it for some reason always comes out as flavourless mush. Even when this happened with smaller teams the result seemed the same. Nothing would come out, or shit would come out late, and the games would be unplayably terrible.
EYE has so much feature creep that the game actually consumed the tabletop RPG that it was based off, to the point where said RPG didn’t even release. There are so many out of place features in the game that it makes the HUD games in SS1 look consistent. Yet somehow, with an incomprehensible story, overly complex gameplay, overambitious and frequently mis-implemented mechanics, and more beyond, the game still has insanely distinct flavour enhanced by all of these components, and provides a decent(if imbalanced) and memorable play experience, while overbaked shitfests don’t.
I’m actually insanely disappointed with this studio’s games since EYE. They should never have been made to work in licensed universes, and would have done well to be given bigger budgets but shorter turnarounds, or even a rolling Early Access development with some publisher oversight from New Blood or Apogee(I’d say 3D Realms but after the delays, maybe not) seeing as they actually seem to be able to perform to a deadline.

    • @JackWse
      @JackWse 12 днів тому

Yeah I wouldn't necessarily put my stock in new blood or the reincarnated Apogee.. pretty much saw that one coming, or at least I had a feeling.. and that's we might have learned over the last year.. a deadline is.. I guess whenever you kick it out the door cuz the money ran out or something?
I don't know where to go though lol.. you either have to do it yourself.. which is increasingly more possible.. or you do as commanded.. The dream of ion Storm is.. well... Sigh...
That said, smaller teams and possibilities have never been more aligned since maybe the mid to early '90s.. More so even as most of those endeavors required publisher backing of some kind due to the expense of the equipment in a lot of cases. And there's too much noise I think to try to get funding on promises alone..
People got to eat.. That's what drove so many companies to their inevitable demise at the back of eas shed in the early 2000s after the '90s crash.. or worse.. Bobby's puzzle basement like poor Raven did for a decade and change.
In a lot of cases, video game suffer at the behest of a software industry that pays well as a feature.. somehow someway this is managed to not be the case in the video game industry.. and they've worked very hard to keep it that way.. But then there's the rest of the software industry.. and if your talented.. for a lot less stress you can eat well.
That leaves anyone wanting to be in a cohesive team with very few options..
And while there's definitely been some disappointment and inevitable trending disappointment with this studio in its current iteration...
I don't know.. I would have said a year ago Man if only this team could get some adults at the table they could make something amazing.. now I'm convinced... They can't make something amazing with adults at the table.. But they might make something stable.. and boring.
It's not the fact that they're still so many half-baked ideas and over ambition in their current titles, regardless.. it's that there's not nearly as much as there were before that worries me.

In regards to the whole 40k thing, with the use of the term psykers and the Tyranid looking enemies.
Streum On Studio actually now make 40k games, They made Space Hulk: Deathwing, a co-op horde shooter where you play as a Space Marine of the Dark Angels chapter
And Necromunda Hired Gun, an FPS with RPG Mechanics, including implants and advanced movement mechanics... Hey. Wait a minute...
They're both pretty mediocre unfortunately, but they do have some good bits that shine, and have some amazing art design which fits with the 40k universe.
I kinda hope one day, they make a sequel to E.Y.E in the same universe, that directly looks at where E.Y.E failed, and where E.Y.E succeeded.

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Deathwing isn't like anything else they have made. It's slow and deliberate and on the higher difficulties the tactical aspects come to the forefront. Normal difficulty doesn't require much understanding from the player, but it's a game about navigating the map and positioning first and foremeost.
Hired Gun provides the player with so much mobility and power that it doesn't feel much like E.Y.E. anymore. It's much more streamlined in terms of skills and they are easier to use with some of them more or less breaking game difficulty.
