The object of this 4 player card game is to be the first player to 500 points. The object of each hand is to win at least as many “tricks” as you bid. Setup. Using a standard deck of playing cards, with Aces high, 2s low, and Spades trumping all, each player is given a card from a shuffled deck and who ever receives the highest card becomes the first dealer. If there is a tie, try again. The dealer shuffles and the player to their right cuts the deck. The dealer then deals 13 cards one at a time clockwise to each player. Players look at their own cards but keep them hidden from their opponents.
After everybody receives their cards, bids are made. A bid refers to the players’ expectation of “tricks” they will make in the round. Normally, all players must make a minimum of 1 bid. A trick is given to the player with the highest card in each round.
After the bids are made, the dealer lays one card from their hand face up in the center of the table as a lead. Continuing clockwise from the lead, each player places a card down matching the same suit as the lead card. If they do not possess cards of the same suit, they may play any of their cards. The card with the highest rank in the suit that was led, wins the round, winning the trick. Spades are trump, and always rand higher than the other suits. For example, A 3 of spades beats a King of diamonds. The winner of the trick, collects the cards facedown and pouts them to the side, keeping each tricks separate, then leads the next card. This process repeats until all the cards for the hand are played.
At the end of the hand, points are rewarded to players who made their number of bids. You receive 10 points for each trick made that you bid and 1 bonus point for each trick made over your initial bid. For example, if you big 5 tricks at the start of the round and ended up taking 6 tricks, you would get 50 points for meeting the initial 5 tricks and 1 point for the additional trick. Giving you 51 points for the hand. 0 points are given to players who fail to win the number of tricks they bid.
If no player has 500 or more points, then role of dealer rotates clockwise by one and another hand is dealt. Keep playing until someone has 500 or more points, then they are the winner.
One thing to point out is that in the hood, the preferred venue for spades, tricks are called books and it's a game that can get intense.
I wanna learn the hood version!
L.F Sader shut up, there is no “hood version”
@@junko_enoshima ey mayne
The hood is not the preferred venue, it's YOUR preferred venue...you can play it everywhere, no matter where you're from or who you are and it gets intense anywhere...
I've never heard tricks I was screaming "books you dumb ass" 🤣
I learned this in a mental hospital of all places and have taught some of my friends to play using how I was taught. Good to know I was taught correctly haha. Very nice tutorial.
Same! We played this constantly when there was nothing to do lol
Me too, I guess this is a popular game to play there
Seriously that's where I learned to!
same! lmaooo
Same they said it was also popular in prison lol
That flipping of cards at the start though, super satisfing
I’m so confused. Help. I’m tired of going to my black families bbqs and asking for everyone to play uno instead 😩

Added to my Non-Bridge Trick Taking Card Games playlist today. This is the simple version for beginners.
I work at a mental hospital, and all the patients AND staff play spades. I’m trynna learn lol
Me too
What haven't they taught you.
(1) If you do not make your bid, you lose the amount you bid: eg, you bid 3 and you only make two, you go negative 30 in the hole. (2) Another twist of the game. When your over tricks add to 10, you lose 100 points.
Exactly how we play in my house
Confused about the last rule you said.
@@aceystar1478 By losing 100 points (each over trick is a negative 10 points), this prevents you from underbidding so you only bid a safe amount to reach the winning number. My group has always played to 500.
@@timhawks6101 so if in a whole game your over tricks hit 10 you lose 100, or every trick iver bid you lose ten
@@aceystar1478 You do not lose any points until you reach 10 overtricks. When you reach 10 overtricks, THEN you lose 100 points. This strategy has been added since the game was invented.
Very well explained without lots of verbiage. This helps a lot with us with ADD/ADHD
In addition to the rules he stated, for every trick won over the bid, when a player receives 1 point, that point is called a Bag. If the player wins 10 Bags, their score is reduced by 100 points and the Bags are reset back to 0. This stops players from bidding low.
The rules presented are incomplete. While there are variants, most versions I play have these rules:
1) Spades cannot be played until they are "broken," that is played when someone cannot follow the suit of the lead card. Playing a spade before spades are "broken" is considered a foul.
2) Overbooks, or playing more than you bid, is discouraged. If you get ten overbooks, you lose 100 points.
3) You can bid nil, or 0 books. Doing so and successfully taking no books net you 100 points. In some variants, you can go double nil. In this case, you are not allowed to look at your hand before making the bid. Making this bid gets you 200 points.
4) If you are playing with a partner, communicating your play or your hand is a foul.
5) Spades is not played with a standard 52 cards deck. The deck is prepared by adding the two jokers that come with the deck and removing the 2 of clubs and the 2 of hearts. Trumps -- in order of value -- are the Big Joker, the Little Joker, the 2 of Diamonds, the 2 of Spades, and the Ace of Spades. Trumps are the highest spades in the game and beats everything else. Only with spades is the 2 the high card; with other suits, it's the lowest card.
6) If you are dealt a hand with no spades, you can call for a re-deal before the first card is played. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, as some in this situation may take the opportunity to bid nil.
7) Breaking a spade when you have the a card with same suit as the lead card in your hand is a foul. Fouls can be handled by point deductions, a reprimand from the other players, or whatever the tradition is where you are playing.
8) The lead card outranks every other played card of other ranks, even if the face value is higher, except for a spade.
9) If you do not make you bid, you lose 10 times your bid in points. For example, if you bid 5 and miss, you lose 50 points. Overbid three times in a row and you forfeit the match.
That's all I can recall, but there are likely other rules I missed. Spades was the first card game I was taught, so it means a lot to me. The explanation of the game on this video was good intentioned, but missing the mark.
What about Nil and Double Nil bids? (Nil is a bid of zero after looking at your hand: scores 100 if successful, -100 if you fail. Double Nil is a bid of zero before looking at your cards, and scores 200 or -200 as the case may be.)
Yes we call that a blind. If you need 140 you go blind 7
Kind of reminds of the card game "The Crew" but way more to the point and can be played with basic playing cards. I'll have to save this one for my game nights
The Crew is very much an evolution of classic trick-taking games like Spades, Hearts, Dub's Bridge, etc.
Tongans have a similar game but we call it TALAMU and it's played with partners. The dealer rotates left after every hand and Spades are not Trump. But rather a different POWER CARD chosen by the 1st player to the left of dealer that flips a random card whilst cards are being dealt. If a team fails to score a trick and the other team gets to 7 Tricks that's called POKO and your team is kicked out and next awaiting team jumps in.We use to play alot growing up and which ever team had the most consecutive wins had bragging rights.Lastly each round of teams play best of 3
Great tutorial, short and straight to the point. I wish all videos were like this. 💪🏾💯
Thanks!

I learned how to play this in jail 😂💀
U were in jail?
@@Koko-So-Meitantei_ my thoughts too this corny guy dropping the soap
Seems to be real popular in the pen lol
I learned from people who went to jail at boot camp lol. Yes it is a popular game in jail
@@Koko-So-Meitantei_ obviously he was talking about monopoly
I knew how to play this but I stopped playing and I forgot so thanks so much spades master!
Also, 13 is the number of ranks in a playing card deck, because 52 divided by 4 equals 13.
it also works for 3 players, because (13*3)/3 is 13 and the same for two players.
I learned that from playing hearts.
I've always played the rule that you can't go over. Makes it more interesting, and you start to strategize how to throw good cards away if you are on pace to exceed your bid.
I'm sorry I need a black version, cause this ain't it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣👍🏾
i’m clicking off rn
@Elio How?
Exactly!!! 🤣🤣😂
All my friends be playing this and now I have a understanding how it goes thank you lol
Learned spades when locked up 😁
If you don't make your bid you go by your bid times 10. So if you bid 5 and don't make your bid, you go back 50. I've never seen anyone play or read rules where going set was not the case. Further if you make DOUBLE your bid you go BACK 100 points. This works to keep bids honest and people from 'lowballing' their hand. You also failed to point out there are 13 books per hand.
God bless you lmao
You look at your hand of 13 cards and guess how many books or tricks you can make. If you bid a number you should at least make that number to get points, if you underbid you get nothing. If you overbid, you get 1 extra point. Some people would confuse spades with bid whist.
I’m tired of instructions you guys do it all
That’s so interesting.
It’s like the more riskier you are, the faster coukd you win, but it costs you to fail.
Thank you Spade man! I watch video and now I’m the best spade player ever. My no good cousin always beat me in spade and slap me silly, but this time I watched your video. Next time I played cousin, he beat me even faster, slapped me silly twice and gave me an atomic wedgie that made me fart my pants off. Even though I lost, you are still spade man in my book, ok?
Man I love this game could play it for hours
I’m breaking the generational curse and will teach my future kids how to play spades. At my big age, I can’t believe my parents neglected me 😂
What do you call it when someone thows offsuit like "i dont have diomonds" and then throws diomonds next trick or later tricks in same game? Besides a fight
Renege
Cheating lol
Renege, someone could call you out
My whole family would trip
Renigging you owe the other team 20-30 points
I was looking to see if you have the card game tunk or tonk which every way they spell it. If you do let me know, if not you should do a tutorial on it as well.
You can also play this in teams!
What about Nil, Blind Nil, and Bags. It's normally a team game and gets pretty intense in the Navy.
It's a very good game that makes excellent introduction to bridge. I also recommend to anyone to try out 500.
2:22 it glows like button there
Super helpful and simple thanks?!
Great tutorial!
Thanks!
3 things not mentioned in the video:
1. Accumulating 10 bags over the course of multiple rounds deducts 100 point
2. Most people play so that if you do not make your bid, you lose 10 points for each trick you bid
3. Bidding 0, or nil, is a option that grants you 100 points if successful and loses you 100 points if you get a trick
Yes this is how we play. We keep track of bags and going nil. I know some people play where you can go blind and bid before you see your cards and if successful make a certain amount of points but I never play that way. Also if someone is set back to -200 that’s game as well.
South African Indians is obsessed with a game Similar to this called thunee . It's by far the most famous card game played among us
This was such a good tutorial, I literally just learned it by watching this
really? he didnt even mention bags
So what are the points for the spade cards
Can you also do Clubs by North Star Games?
sir r u ok???? bro like ngl i didnt even see u blink...is there a guy with a gun behind the camera?!
00:50 _Players must make a minimum of one bid_
I am confused by this, implying as it does the possibility of there being more than one bid per person. How does that work?
(Or do you really that the minimum permissible bid is for one trick?)
?
Do you have to play with four people or can you play with 2/3 people
Can you explain to me what a bag penalty is? I don't get it and keep getting that online lol 😢
I just played spades last night with 2 players so can u make that video pls
Thankyou I needed this inorder to play now I know whats going to happen when I play thanks
According to Hoyle, the dealer starts the bidding, and the player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick.
Also, the goal is not only to reach 500 points, but avoid going below -300 points. 300 points below zero is an automatic loss.
Lastly, each additional trick taken in excess of the bid not only rewards a single point, but what is known as a "bag." Once a team accumulates ten bags, they lose 100 points. After the hand has finished, that team's bag count is reset to zero.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that a player may bid nil before even looking at their cards. This is called a "blind nil" or "double nil". Bidding a blind nil doubles the points rewarded or deducted, depending on whether or not the player makes the bid.
What’s stopping someone from bidding high each round ? I either get 10 points every time or I get zero , I feel like you should lose points for every bid you made and didn’t succeed with (so if I bid 4 and won 2, I should be penalized )
U do
If you don’t get to that 10 you bid, you don’t get credit for the tricks you did win. If you bid 4 and won 2, you’d get zero points. If you bid 2 and won 2, you’d get 20 points.
@@jacobsjessica08 You are wrong. If they bid 4 and get two. They lose 40 points.
@@jacobsjessica08 Yeah the guy in the video completely misses the mark when talking about not making your bid. You lose points by 10s if you don't make your bid. Bid 5 get only 3? You lose 50 points. Also that "bonus point" for getting extra tricks is called a bag which is okay as long as you dont take 10 bags. If you take 10 bags you lose 100 points. idk. This video is good for the basics about it.
Someone plz help me..
What are the rulse of getting bonus in every round
If you win 10 overtricks you lose 100 points
So what about the build up of extra tricks?
great explanation
Thank you for the reminder tsg!

Spades is a hood classic
I have never seen a spades game where getting setback ("going set") didn't result in a score of -10 x the number bid.
What about bidding no low
Player to left of dealer takes the lead. Never the dealer
1:46 You and I have the same thumbs lol
I've run Boston, but I've never kept score
Isn’t the overbidder penalized?
What about making a video on Court Piece (aka Rung)?
Can players talk to each other about how many bids to do as a team?
Team mates sit across from each other but DON'T talk or give any signals to each other. You hope your teammate knows how to play
I learned how to play in jail so i showed my girlfriend this video so we can play on the outs
This video is missing a lot of information, and is also dead wrong on some rules. Spades is not an individual game, it’s played in pairs, with the pair working to achieve a joint bid. Furthermore, players have the high risk option of bidding 0, winning 100 points if the capture no tricks, but losing 100 points if their opponents force them to capture one. Spades also cannot be led until they have been trumped into another trick, or broken. Also, teams that miss their bids lose points equal to what they would have made if they hit their bid, ie a missed 5 bid would lose 50 points. Somewhat frustrating that this video likely confuses people more than it helps
So it's a variant of hearts basically. Cool thanks for the explanation.
I learned it the opposite that hearts was a variation of spades but it's there a card in hearts that if you get you get 13 points like kind of spades or clubs or smthn? It'd been awhile
quite different form hearts actually lol
Yea we call it books! Shiet I done ran a gruff before with them thangs lol
I played with different rules but a few
But what causes you to be in the negative. I'm playing a game downloaded from playstore. I seem to always go into the negative. I believe what you say are the very bare basics of the game. It is a little more detailed than that. Thanks.
0:16 showoff
So?
Nice tutorial, but let's not forget about the sandbag penalty. You get 1 bonus point for each trick over the bid, but it is also 1 bag. Collect 10 bags, and you are penalized a lot more points.
There is also the nil and double nil options, where you score if the number of tricks you took equals zero.
No talking at the table rule number one.
What is ranking of the suits
Whatever suit is lead ranks highest, unless there is a spade then that ranks higher than all the others
what if you lie about not having a card in the color, to loose a worse card?
