Except instead of the game ending when you ran out of your cards, once one player ran out you would slap one of the two piles, aiming for the smaller one. Then you would each take your pile and start again. The game would end when one player ended up with all the cards, and said player would lose

Did anybody else play spit? It is very similar to this, except your cards were laid out on the table in a specific way. Also, when you ran out of cards, you had to slap the pile that you thought had less cards, and took those.
The way we always played it, when that happens you put all the played cards together, shuffle them, then place them down as if you're setting up the game. You'll end up with more than 5 in each stack, but that's fine.
If your side piles are depleted then you reshuffle each and start using those? Won’t there be a different number in each pile, which makes it harder for one person to finish their hand as well as their side pile?
This game is fun but unfortunately you can have a huge run and be very far ahead. It’s a math style game. If your opponent doesn’t play cards you will eventually not win until he has equal cards.
I have a question. What if both the players have the same cards that they are about to put down and they slap it down literally at the same time?? What do we do then. And we do not know who put it down first. I hope that makes sense

That's a very similar game named Spit, not Speed. You can find a video of how to play in his channel too.

When I learned the game we used jokers as a wild. I would put my cards in order with the joker in front and put them down as fast as I could.
