    I think the cooler barn cat house is a very good idea. I don't know about piling them, though, it'll probably just make them fight all the time. Maybe spacing them out in the places they usually hang out at inside of the barn at a safe distance from each other so they'll feel comfortable enough. The coolers would allow you to put a heated mat inside and it would maintain that heat really well since that's what coolers are for, after all. Then again, you might just put some fluffy stuff or straw inside of there and the heat of the cats would heat it up gradually as they slept. Cats generally like small places like that so heat mat or no heat mat, they would love it either way. But a cooler house with a mat would be heaven to them.

      From my experience outdoor cats won't use a cooler or tote that doesn't have an exit as well as an entrance. I guess they fear being trapped in there. I live in a moderate climate though where it only snows about once every 10 years so maybe cats in a colder climate aren't as picky. Our neighborhood possums love the coolers even if there is no exit.

      My cats have a heavy cardboard box that my hubby insulated, it has two entrances. My cats will not use anything without an escape route. There is an electric heated pad plus newspapers bunched up. Great insulators. Then I toss heavy-duty packing blankets over the box. It's set up right against our house. The box is on a wooden platform, there is cardboard laid down on the floor again cats love cardboard. With the packing blankets over all the box this area stays darn warm as well.
      The other container you have that is open leaves a cat vulnerable that is why I feel they won't use it.

    My cousin used to use an old hog shed for his farm cats. He lined it with square straw bales with a straw bale construction in the center of this that formed a cave of sorts. It kept them warm with out using electricity. They could find their own nieches to cuddle in.

      I think that's the best way; cats are good at coping with very cold temperatures as long as they have shelter and insulation. They have their own coats that get naturally thicker in the winter if they're outside all the time, and are also much better at retaining body heat than we humans are.

    An important thing to keep in mind when you got cats that don't get along is to have a comfortable place for them to be where they still got view over the area. If they can't see around them or keep an eye out then they will not settle in the spot. As you saw your cats took turns going into the house, probably just to heat up, and then left again - that's most likely due to them not having the field of view to see if another cat was approaching. Same with how skeptical they were before going in - they had to check the entrances to see if there was a cat there before actually entering.
    So for the best comfort of your cats then I'd suggest a place high up in a structure that got windows or something along those lines so they'd be able to keep an eye out :)
    Maybe a plastic igloo or something with a heating pad in it.

  • @youarebymyside

    I think they didn't like the second 'house' because it is open. Cats often like protected spaces and that thing didn't seem very comfortable, either. So anoter box where they could hide and chill in peace would be nice. I absolutely would love to watch you build something like fork a freezer. I watch FlatbushCats and they created dozens of housing for strays out of containers. It's cheap, warm, and convenient. Highly recommend watching it, it's one of the latest videos on his channel.

    You know the "fire safe" thing only works if you don't have several heating pads plugged into one extension cord right... I definitely love the ideas... I just wish you could put them all on their own breaker and directly into the plug, not an extension cord...

    • @MrsTigercat
      @MrsTigercat Рік тому +18

      That is my concern, as well. Heating pad safety warnings always say, "Do Not plug into an extension cord." Plugging more than one heating element into the same extension cord is frightening. That barn probably doesn't have Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) circuits, so if the circuit overheats, it's bye-bye barn. Please Morgan, unplug that second pad.

    • @maraz666
      @maraz666 Рік тому +6

      @@stephenmg12 That is an important detail. The heating element inside the pad is likely just copper wire. Copper work-hardens and bending it multiple times will absolutely break it. Worse, the way it happens causes single points in the wire to have a higher resistance than the rest of the wire, causing those points to heat up more than intended by the manufacturer. This starts to happen from the very first bend. It may not be noticeable until the pad simply shuts off and/or starts burning from the inside out, depending on how much the manufacturer cares about the end user.

    Regular heating pads are not made for leaving on all the time. For outdoor use, seed starting mats or pig farrowing mats are waterproof and safer around hay. For extra warmth, do you have the hair you brushed off the cattle? Put a layer of that on the hay or mat, and they will snuggle down in it.

    You want to put the tote upside down, preferably on the lid and cut holes for doors. Add straw at first, work up to heat pad, it may not be necessary. They like to go in and put, have escape routes etc. This is how they provide housing for the feral cat colonies here in NC

    The cooler cat houses work great! Many feral communities have these in my area, or you can make one with a tote and some one to two inch foam insulation, I’ve even used the reflective insulation which is my preferred method with straw. As long as they have shelter and a bed of straw they’re pretty happy! Also raising anything you build up off the ground also helps keep them warm because your shelter won’t absorb the cold from the cement or dirt.

    The A-frame combines the perfect blend of shelter, heat, insulation, and breathability. The ghetto tote house really never stood a chance, in my opinion. An interesting experiment to see in action, though. The igloo design would be a good idea if you were trying to have a shelter further away from any solid structure. • @Sarafimm2
    @Sarafimm2 Рік тому +2

    Inside the barn, I don't expect anything to get wet if you haven't had issues before, but definitely don't "scrunch up" heated mats fire-less or not. I've seen several feral cat housing videos and most stress (1) off the ground/cement to reduce chill or wetness. (2) thick foam insulation including putting one styro-foam container into another larger one and putting straw between the two. If out in the elements or in a windy location make sure the lids are secured against both wind and wet. (3) ideally, the inside will be the length of your largest cat and a half in size with a deep bed of straw on the bottom and sides of the (inner most) container which your cat can paw into place as needed. A completely styro-foam container would also allow you to cut out a small square near the interior bottom to run an electric blanket cord through and replace it with only enough space for the cord if you don't want to put straw inside. (4) One opening should be 4-6" above the surface the cat walks on and approximately 5-7" (cereal bowl size) in diameter with no sharp edges since nearly all cats will put their heads close to the entrance to smell and hear anything coming close. The size also deters larger bodied raccoons or opossums from taking up residence. (5) For a farm such as yours, Morgan, I would recommend the beds are best placed where a cat can avoid larger animals/predators (like cows and dogs) and survey their surroundings for danger or prey. This is probably why Pablo and Molly fought over the one bed and only slept in it for an hour at a time. They constantly had to worry about the other encroaching and they couldn't get a good view. I suspect that the bed on the porch might get more and longer action as long as it doesn't rain or snow directly on the cat tent. Since you said the cats like the cow entrance near the cow water, I would suggest that you put a cat house(s) on a tall stack of pallets or deep shelf with a ramp or cat wall walkway out of reach of swinging horns. This would also be good if the cats can climb a piece of wood to sit on and drink from the cow water tub.

Despite having three barn cats are you absolutely sure that the barn is 100% rodent free? It would be tragic if a mouse chewed on any of those wires and caused a fire. I would reconsider plugging in those heated shelters in the barn.
    Additional cat shelters are very cheap and easy to make out of those 12 gallon totes lined with extruded polystyrene sheet insulation, that you can buy in 4 x 8 foot sheets and cut easily to size with a utility knife. A little straw on the floor of the shelter, and it's done.

    Whatever design you go with make sure it has 2 doors (entrance/exit) so they don't feel trapped. They like the A-frame because it feels more secure for sleeping in where as your tub with a heating element is too open and leaves them vulnerable.

    I'm sure your Barn Cats appreciate all of your efforts to keep them safe and warm from the cold Vermont winter months. Pablo, Molly and Ginny were cautiously checking out the new sleeping quarters you thoughtfully provided for them. Yes, straw is also excellent to use as insulation for them, too. However, as you pointed out, care is needed to prevent fire hazards. I'm sure they'll like their new sleeping quarters just fine.
    Happy holidays to all at GSF!

    We have two sheds at the patio on my house at the countryside. The roof of one of them fell and we had to repair it. We demolished it and made a better shed, and put the electrics, that old sheds didn't had. We also put the electric installation on the other shed, one light point and one plug. That shed has no door. Just minutes after we finished the installation, one of the free roaming cats we have on the patios and roofs of the block installed himself on the shed, squatting on it... ;)

    I use big storage tubs. Put a foam cooler inside, straw & fleece throw. Cut the hole higher. They can defend the entrance. We put a square of ply wood on top as an awning. Tuck it away, so it's protected from the wind. Our cats have been toasty all winter. I'm in Ohio, it's not as cold as up north. It does freeze for about 2-3 months.

    i honestly could have guessed at the outcome with the cat houses... cats like enclosed or semi enclosed circular/square housing because it's tight and cozy and it makes them feel hidden and safe. the 2nd heated bed was more of an alcove and probably made them feel very exposed even if it was warm.

    Cats and cows often get along well in a farmstead because it's a mutually beneficial relation. Cows hate mice and don't perceive cats as a threat because of the size difference. For kitties a cow is a ginormous, slow moving and non-aggressive air heater / sun blocker that often makes juicy rodents jump out of their hiding spots (in the hay or the grass pastures).

    Since he's become a full time farmer, Morgan no longer has the racoon shades around his eyes. Not a cat person, yet these cats are the coolest. I have a hunch that Molly will occupy the doghouse perch the most. The Maremmas are oversized barncats in her eyes. I'm wondering when Toby gets sent out for stud duty? He hasn't been neutered, he'll need to procreate to maintain his health...Tobes the Maremma Rocco Sifreddi lol.

      I've kept pet dogs since I was 11, an unsterilized dog develops degenerative hindquarter problems as they age. If you don't believe this you're in denial. Toby is a canine God, I don't want to see him lose control of his bowels or worse.

    • @lonewolf6287
      @lonewolf6287 Рік тому

      @@Italonino I don’t think this is the majority , I’ve been around intact dogs and never had issues your talking of. In fact desexing especially male dogs can actually increase likelihood of joint,hip and elbow issues as they age as these issues are linked to hormones. A lot of veterinary studies have been done that would suggest keeping a dog intact actually improves and maintains their cognitive function too as they age. Only health issues I can think of is testicular cancer or prostrate cancer but only saw that with a friends dog once. I’ve seen far more desexed dogs develop hip and elbow dysplasia than intact dogs. I also think if a intact dog especially male was to get the issues your talking about from lack of allowing them to breed I’d be looking at genetic issues or issues with specific breeds. I have a nearly 3yr old maremma and a 8yr old kelpie intact never had an issues , we used to have a cattle dog that we desexed and it had a lot of bladder issues and then later in life developed a lot of joint issues by 7yrs.

    The orange big box home improvement center has waterproof 18-watt soil heat mats for about $20. Lower wattage might be safer than 60 watts and more economical. I 'm not sure I would use extension cords in the barn...I'd have to think more that one. Love all that you share, Morgan! Been watching since you started! Cutting a bit off of a plastic tub for a door and slapping a nice piece of bedding in side old mattress foam or even a traditional cat bed is perfect. My cats absolutely love the tubs during the winter, it does not even have a heater in it. I would definitely recommend using a plastic tub for a cheap cat bed.

    Cats like enclosed spaces. They feel safer in them, that's why the A frame is a hit and the open one a bust. It's not the heat it's the design.
    Any design that is enclosed they will like. A simple A frame house of scrap plywood would work. It's really about what materials you already have. If you have an old cooler the cooler would be neat.

    Cooler beds are a good idea. Just maybe have them be individual ones since there seems to be infighting amongst the cats when they are too close to each other.
    Also I’m curious as to what Lil sleeps in. Does she have her own cat bed inside or does she sleep on the couch/bed?
    What plans do you have for the old dog house? The one the geese kept stealing from Toby.

    Either the cooler cat house or the plastic storage bin works great. If you do the storage bin one ,use high density styrofoam inside .And use straw ,not hay if you want extra warmth. I also saw one where ther attached a plastic flower planter with the bottom cut out to put in the hole.

    You might as well build something they are semi enclosed in. Also could you purchase a soft cat bed to put on the shelf instead of the hay. You might also place that shelf in front of the window in the old duck house. I think you would have better luck having a box shape structure in the duck house for them to snuggle into. Kind of like a chicken laying box.

    I tried to make the cooler cat house but didn't want to spend the money on a brand new cooler. I could not find a used one but I did find a 2 in thick styrofoam cooler that food is shipped in. I cut a 6-in hole in the side and lined it with the sheepskin this seems to work extremely well and the local outdoor cat loves it. Because of the sickness of the styrofoam the cat seems to stay nice and warm. I recommend moving your electric heating pad to the bottom of the tote that you have it in cats seem to like their belly and feet to be warmer they have plenty of fur on the top of their back to keep them warm

  • @leetah4394
    @leetah4394 Рік тому +1

    if you don't want to cut the tote throw a blanket over it to cover most of open side and just leave a little space on one side for the cats to go in and out. it will keep it warmer and make them feel more secure in being able to hide.

    We've got a couple of those rubbermaid container houses set up for the strays in the neighborhood. I don't remember which one you use, but we've got straw or hay in them, whichever one doesn't mold up, and that helps to insulate the houses. You could try doing one of those, but just be sure to use larger containers and make two entrances.
    That or just 4-5 of those A frame houses, but spread out a bit so they don't fight over them.

    Considering all cats can’t resist a cardboard box I wouldn’t over think it on concepts and design. If the a-frame is doing it for them I think your done. Your farm would be perfect for a home based weather station. You could live stream along side something else interesting on the farm - like a hoop house feed for example.
