    I couldn’t agree more with everything you said! I’m currently employed as a senior UX/UI designer and autonomy is definitely lacking. The UX job market is so rough right now so I recently made the decision to work on building up my freelance Webflow business until it can replace my full time income.
    I would highly suggest you trying to get accepted as a Webflow Template designer! I found it’s a great way to fill in income gaps from freelance work and it keeps me fresh and up-to-date with Webflow. I recommend learning Webflow to every designer who will listen because I really think it can be the easiest way to make a decent living as a designer, with lots of autonomy.
    Anyways, been following your videos for a while and I am engaged! You're totally right about a lot of UX content creators being experts. It's so refreshing to see your content that is about the journey, not the end result. You’ve even inspired me to consider making my own videos!

    Honestly I’m so grateful for this channel, it’s truly so nice to watch a realistic career journey especially within the UX field, I’ve watched some of your videos and you’ve helped me feel more hopeful of the future in terms of my career and how career growth and success isn’t linear. I did my masters in UX and for a year I’ve not got a single job, granted I didn’t try for the whole year but I just lost faith in myself and my ability as a designer I truly thought I wasn’t good enough and after watching your videos I want to try again and see where life can take me so thank you again, and good luck!

    Hey Hey! Recently discovered your videos a couple of weeks ago and decided to subscribe. I recently started my UI UX journey with Course Careers at the tale end of 2023. I decided to document my journey and I was looking for creators who documented their journey as well while being in their bootcamps. That is when I saw your channel and saw how consistent you were with documenting your journey. I have not seen a lot of creators document their experience throughout the bootcamp process. I believe that you are definitely serving a need. Thank you for your transparency. I also wish you the best in your new pursuit of freelance while working part time as a PT. I will continue to follow your journey.

    I really respect your raw and honest display of your journey! UX Design job or not, figuring out what's the right "north star" for you is about designing a life that you can love and thrive in.
    In fact, many folks reach out to me about transitioning into UX design but it often becomes a general life coaching session and we find out that another path is usually the more fruitful route.

    as a person who spent 15k and completed an in-person UX design bootcamp in 2018 to pivot into a "career" i thought i'd love but failed to land a job as a designer, i feel like a total failure when it comes to UX. im literally so numb to applying to design jobs that i automatically expect a ghost or a no.
    i watched your other video and like you said, most people would quit due to burnout or lack of response from the consistent work they put in and that's exactly where i'm at. i feel fucking pathetic when i see "i got a ux design job within 3 months with no prior experience" when it's taken my 3+ years with absolute no luck. everybody loves to share their successes but nobody shows the failures like myself and like my journey (but why would they right?)
    it's why i appreciate your video and i'm sorry for the rant but i'm started to feel like the universe is telling me UX design isn't my path despite my interest in it. i appreciate your insight and vulnerabilities within your journey. i also listen to a lot of self help books / podcasts and its often that failing is part of the success. we'll figure a way for ourselves. best of luck to you!!!

Anyway, thank you for sharing your honest thoughts and all the best wishes in your journey!

      Thank you so much for saying that Francisco! Just remember, people in general have a negativity bias. The people who get jobs relatively easily will likely not post about it. It's typically just the naysayers that voice their opinion more openly.

    im currently in the same position as well, last year i decided to switch careers and since i already did some graphic design i got interested in trying out ui/ux which i ended up enjoying. so I spend the whole year learning and building a portfolio to have ready for next year (2023) to start job searching and now several months have passed and no job either. Which is understandable with how competitive it's gotten, if its not the countless rejections I receive, its burn out I start to feel along with just doubting if this was the right choice. Since building a freelance business was my main goal in the future im thinking of doing the same and trying that out, the thought of working for myself along with having financial freedom sounds good to me and something I have thought of having one day, and like you said times have changed there many ways to build sources of income so why not take a shot and see what happens, you made it this far may as well go for it, Congratulations on monetization, i wish you all the best and look forward to what knowledge & advice you will share in future videos, keep up the great content

    I love watching your journey, Jansley! Your honesty is contagious. But I am sad that the state of the industry is as it is right now. As soon as you get your first role, it's SO much easier. I would say that UX is generally a role more focused on long-term projects, which there might be less chance of working on while freelancing. Unless you find a client with whom it "clicks" and you continue to work on that project for a long time. I love the balance of having one long-term client and those less complex, more "visual" projects coming in every once in a while, but it's a personal preference. Experience gets you leverage, and do whatever you can to build that experience! Especially if you manage to already know what type of projects you'd like to work on, and what excites you about them - narrow your focus on those, and it gets so much easier to communicate who you are and what you do, and for whom. If it's web design, landing page design, web dashboards, mobile apps... whatever it might be, be laser-focused on it, and be clear about communicating it! Your PT strategy, alongside trying to freelance is such a great way of doing it! Good luck and I am just an email away if you'd like to chat about your portfolio or something like that! - Andrija from Supercharge

Your videos make us feel less alone in this - esp when you said "making content of being like in the trenches." They're amazing. Excited for you, and congrats on your new journey ahead!

    Nice view! Hello cho cho train lol. I can totally relate to what your saying by a lot. UX is very over saturated now sadly. And my biggest fear is even if I actually get the job. What if it sucks? As someone who dealed with 3 verbal abusive employers in the past. I'm terrified about getting another job like that since it can happen anywhere. Not even just low paying jobs. Any job can be like that...
    I'm planning on trying to make my own art/stationary shop. Also, start a UA-cam channel for myself too. Thats actually my passion, art.
    Plus I thought about freelancing again as well in UX. But I want to do it right this time. By making a portfolio that caters to freelance. Thanfully I still live with my family support and I can decide what I want to do. However, I feel like the time is ticking since I am also in my early 30s. It's hard finding even just a job. At least for me.
    I think the decision you have made is great. Its like an experiment so you can see how things go for you. I wish you the best! And looking forward to more of your updates. 😊

      Haha I love the trains that come through Richmond :) Yes, please start making UA-cam content, and let me know once you do, I want to see it! I totally get what you mean by feeling like time is ticking being in your 30s. It feels like so many people in their 20s have their shit figured out. But there are also people in their 50s who don't have life figured out. Everyone is different, and I try to remind myself that it's not a race :)

    Also, true UX is difficult to do freelance unless you position yourself upstream in strategy and design thinking. Otherwise, it's very tactical with a terrible squeeze on research and can quickly become visual design work.

    • @jansleyreal
      @jansleyreal  Рік тому

      Yeah, it seems with freelance it would turn more into web design. Which I'm not totally against, but I do like the research and testing process of UX

      In my experience there are plenty of companies that just want a visual designer but list it as a UX designer, it's still such an incorrectly used title.

  • @melleedunn
    @melleedunn Рік тому

    I agree with a lot of what you say, maybe because we are the same age about 😂
    I find that a lot of us with ambition don't work well in traditional corporate office settings. Back when our parents were working their jobs respected personal time and that employees were looking out for themselves and their family. Now, at least in my experience in the working world, they give crap benefits, under pay you, and push you to work overtime for no compensation and show no respect to a work life balance, even for parents. And if you fall off on doing extra, just follow your outlined role, and take care of yourself and your mental wellbeing, your bosses begin to bully you for no longer giving more.
    I'm still keeping with going for Product Design, but I'm feeling similar with how the job market is and how companies are. Everyone I see in Product Design loves it but I worry that if I get into it I'll love it until it's no longer new. I think also I'm similar, I really want to work for myself and set my own hours, especially with having a kid and my health issues it's gotten hard as I've gotten older to stick with a traditional workday schedule. I also am antisocial and the whole event of traveling to a job, dealing with coworkers all day; it drains me and I don't preform as well as I do in my home office. I love content creation on the whole so I don't really want to stick myself into a single box. But I think for any affiliated marketing to take hold I need to get lucky and grow my channel more 😎
    Live for yourself and things will fall in place and the people who love you will be there. Actually, my sister in-law was fired from a job where her boss was not respecting the time she needed to help care for my nephew, so she took all her knowledge and education and started her own business. They just opened a retail location in Charlottesville, VA.
    Keep going, you got this dude ☺

    I’m about to enter PA school, but have interest in UX design as well. Would it be better for me to master UX/HCI degree now rather than waiting to transition from a PA to designer? However I know with PA it’s a stable job but I’m also worried about the stability of UX

      thats a good question. Tbh the UX HCI degree probably wont help much. however you genuinely dont need it. Recruiters and hiring managers dont even like hiring people coming from bootcamps. and thats just bc the market is so absolutely BONKERS and competitive. Keep your day job and dont put all your eggs in the ux basket. especially since tech is so volatile and ESPECIALLY now. You can transition easy if u are a good storyteller, designer, and thinker. I transitioned from Vet medicine, i took a simple certification along with self teaching while working and imanaged to land a job luckily.
