I remember really enjoying the original release of this game back in the 90's. So cool that they gave it the attention and love it deserves. I can't wait to play through it again. I'm hoping that SquareEnix show this same amount of love to some more of their older games. I would love to get an updated version of Xenogears. That game was AMAZING.
@@alexanderfrancis3008 umm it's an expression referencing my looking forward to playing a favorite game of mine. I'm obviously waiting. It must get tiring replying to all the comments that you find dumb on UA-cam. How do you find the time?
I hope they re do dragon quest taras and cobis adventure just like this .. I miss The old gbc one going thru the sand level facing the cactus and candles always wanting to befriend the serpants with beef bought in greatlog waiting to see if you had a rare monster to breed with the magician that lurks by the stairs were you do the tournaments . I love the 2.5 HD style... it breathes new life to a classic game art style, while retaining the original concept. I pre-ordered the physical of this... Looking forward to it!
I also feel like this game's style feels much more dynamic and less over-saturated than the standard HD-2D from Octopath/Triangle (which I'm kinda sick of already lol).
I played the demo and still remember the original from my youth. The new look fits perfectly, the voice output is very successful and the most important thing is the fun from minute one. I give a clear purchase recommendation.
Really enjoyed the demo! The music was so nice, the writing interesting, and i would stop often to admire the art style. Right now I'm still playing through Octopath 2 but would love to pick this up eventually :D this would be my first Star Ocean game.
I don't even need to watch another review. I am sold. Wow has 2023 has been incredible! We still have Super Mario RPG right around the corner on the 17th. Thanks SwitchUp! Cheers! 🍻
It was the combat that really sold me on this title. I already loved the art style off of first glance, but did not expect such a well put together battle system. I’ll probably be picking this up after finishing my Cyberpunk playthrough 😄
Torn between getting this on my ps5 or switch but I did demo on Ps5 so imma start there, having this on a handheld as well almost seems necessary tho, I’m hooked it’s bringing me back to some of the first jrpgs I ever played on PlayStation (never played the original but if I could go back I’d change that)
This looks so much better than i was expecting. When you guys rate in the 90s, I pay attention. My backlog is groaning already and sale times hasn't even started yet.
It's so weird seeing this. First I hear about Mario RPG and now SOTSS?? It's like I'm going back in time again to relive all the old games I loved as a kid 😍
my memories as a 17 year old are SCREAMING!!! Was my first star ocean game. "Ripper Blast" will forever live rent free in my head. So glad this and Suikoden are finally getting remakes!
I have never played the original. But I really want to play this new version. Based on this review It looks really good and promising. Definitely worth checking out.
Very excited for this one. Looks like an absolute blast to play. I like these RPGs that can be done in 30-40 hours, but if you really want to do more, you could put a lot of time into it.
I've been waiting for this since we got First Departure R. I didn't care originally if it was updated or even improved. But when i played the demo i could already tell this just felt amazing and all of the QoL stuff like the specialties menu makes this a much more enjoyable experience for an already great game. The replayability is top notch with so many recruitable party members even though you can only have 8 per playthrough so a lot of people can have a different experience. It truly is a wonderful game.
I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time as I’ve heard so many good things about the original and I missed playing it the first time. Preordered and it should arrive tomorrow (2nd). Glad the developers put a lot of love and care into this remaster. I love the sci fi/fantasy vibe. Private actions sound like it might be good fun to switch over too. There’s so many good games coming out this year, but it seems like this one will stand high amongst them.
@@davidtimmer596yeah, I actually wrote remake first after seeing all the changes in this video and wasn’t sure what it was technically. So good to see all the QoL improvements as well the gorgeous graphics.
This was one of those games as a kid that I could not beat and really had no idea what was going on. I made it to a different planet where I was doing bunny races… and got stuck
I downloaded the Switch version the other day and just tried it out. Music... stellar, art... stellar, voice acting... Love it. Runs pretty much perfect so far on Steam Deck, looking forward to playing more of this.
First Departure R was tricky for me given how dated some of the material is, not to mention I hit a wall literally at the last map when it turned out I was too weak to even grind the basic enemies, but seeing this review makes me want to give the franchise another go. Also, this game has Welch in it, so that's a worthy lure for me.
It's exciting to see such a unique battle mechanic. I'm personally a big fan of turn-based RPGs, but seeing different types of battle mechanics like this is exciting!
I never got to finish the original version because my little sister destroyed the second disk when I was a kid. I am LOVING this remake so much! Full voice acting! Fully orchestral soundtrack! Beautiful updated graphics! This is an absolute dream of a remaster.
This game looks beautiful. I’ll be picking this one up for sure. It will be my first time playing the game so I’m coming in as a new comer so hopefully it’s not too difficult to get going.
Heh heh. I saw you play this a few days ago Mark. I knew this review is coming. I just didnt expect it to be this early though. A pleasant suprise indeed. 😄
Oh boy, this one looks right up my street. I was secretly hoping it would be rubbish so I didn’t have to fork out the time and money for another JRPG. But it looks like I’ll be diving straight in.
I remember buying this in 2000. I absolutely loved it and treasured it. Unfortunately, I had to sell the physical copy during a spell of hard times and was absolutely gutted. As soon as this was announced, I pre-ordered the physical copy immediately. I'm absolutely loving it. My only gripe is Claude's voice actor; who can grate a little. However, this is easily remedied by switching to Japanese voices.
I downloaded the demo for this back when you uploaded this and yeah... you're not wrong it really is that good, got the physical for Christmas. I would have totally overlooked this game so thank you switchup!
Star Ocean is such a gem! I thought I was too old to be charmed by video games. But, recently played the original Star Ocean on an emulator and I was absolutely amazed. You guys are right, games just have too much going on nowadays.
This was always one of my favorite JRPGs - I'm so glad they did it justice with this re-release. Converting the old pre-rendered backgrounds into fully lit and modeled 3d environments must have been a huge chore, but I hope they do this with other games from the era like FF8 and 9.
After not knowing anything and enjoying First Departure earlier this year I quickly became super hyped to see this. Can't wait. This is my fav look of a retro style so far.
Its like reliving my childhood.... when my mom was alive, she bought me this in middle school. My rpg squaresoft adventures were grand. Now as a 41 year old... this brings joy to my soul to see I get to own this again.... end game is so challenging and fun.... i cant wait until tomorrow. Rip mom.... this is for you!
I'm an hour into the game, and didn't expect this much of a nostalgic rush. I played this as a kid, but it was so long ago that I thought I forgot most of it. The music takes me right back to being that kid.
I am playing the demo right now, and it's a joy to play. Especially the graphics and lightning are awesome. The only thing that is bad with Star Ocean is the long loading times between fights etc. The battle -system is very addictive. I enjoy this game more than Sea of Stars.
86 endings! Crikey. Yet another great looking switch game. The parry mechanic going out the window made me laugh. Love the combat hud, number spam is satisfying. Oh Mark, what are you doing to us all with these excellent reviews!
I wanted a physical copy of this and i like playing jrpg’s on handhelds so I picked it up on the switch. Man was it hard to find i tried like 6 places they were all sold out luckily best buy had 1 copy left.
It's just a 3D game with 2D sprites. There doesn't need to be a label for everything. This has the same graphical style as Xenogears and Grandia and was very utilitarian due to the underpowered PlayStation platform.
How is the performance, vs. other versions (PS5). I'm torn on which version to get, since I have the first one on Switch I'd like to have this one for Switch as well, but not at the cost of performance or graphics.

Imagine that!! Xenogears R, but this time with the content of the second disc fully fleshed out!! And why not... additional content!!
