I have a deep respect for people like this guy! You can tell that hes truly passionate about what he does because he does the homework. Hes digging, researching, studying and articulating with such eloquence that ONLY a person with clean, clear and deliberate motives can do. Thank you!
Finally understand why my teammate always answered "I don't know" when I asked him about certain moves he made. He was the best player in our team, and probably always immersed himself in self 2. Thanks for cracking the mystery for me coach!
Yesss! Im jumping MUCH higher going subconciously for a rebound than trying to dunk. Also Im way faster chasing after a ball than trying to Run a 100m Sprint
this is facts, i remember being on self 2 only a couple of moments in my life. the first time embraced self 2, my mind is completely off and just let my instincts take control, i dropped 6 threes in the 4th qrt and dropped 33 points the whole game. also hit a game winning layup with my mind completely off, just raw animal instinct. but on most days, i always think and think and results into not a great performance on the court.
Damn, I remember when I was playing in HS, I was in such a zone, I wouldn't hear the crowd, felt like in a blurry bubble, would do everything by instinct. Was killin it. Now I overthink, lose confidence when I miss a couple shots..Gotta get back to self 2. Thanks a lot
A thought on your analogy of self one, and self two if you're interested, is the difference between the philosophy of techne and episteme. Episteme is a Greek word used to describe a type of knowledge in an analytical or scientific way. Episteme pretty much means that you understand the theory behind something. Techne is also a Greek word for knowledge, but the meaning is apart from episteme. Techne is a knowledge with wisdom, much like a craftsman or an artist. Techne is an ingrained knowledge that cannot be learned through text or instruction. P.S. your podcasts are awesome man. I'm a 44 year old 6'0" dad who's keeping up with players half his age thanks to guys like you.
Players being in that self 2 mode is so true. I’ve seen so many interviews with players when breaking down their shot saying they square their shoulders to the basket and jump straight up and down. In actual fact they all have lots of turn and sway.
probably the best single video on sports psychology i've ever seen. says everything you need to know in 10 mins. a lot of people try and complicate mental preparation but more complex = more overthinking = self 1
After watching this video I realized that sometimes when I think about my shot and when I think about my shooting form I miss but when I let my muscle memory do the work I hit almost every shot
Best advice I’ve ever seen You should on be self one when you may be practicing and putting in reps so you can be self 2 when it comes game time and you already have it down without thinking about it
I believe this entirely, when I'm not trying I've jumped clear over people without really trying in football but when it comes to basketball and trying and focusing on jumping I'm barely getting high enough to dunk at 6'2
Two theories and\ or avenues of thought that’ve always helped me are: 1) a mindset of relaxed intensity (find my 100% intensity then back off just a little to the highest level of maintainable intensity) 2) the focus that creativity and criticism can’t exist in the same place
Fantastic mention man and well done speaking on this. In my first 25 years of living I've only now even begun being aware and learning how deep the rabbit hole goes when it comes to not only ingrained subconscious patterns but finally the means to reprogramming them. The amount of times I'd sit there and consciously think 'Hang on, for reasons X, Y and Z I should not be feeling this scared or panicked or worried or nervous' and yet I still would anyway and had no idea how to approach conquering that. It's funny thinking as well because, as a musician, I want to practice all day every day and improve my craft and now thinking about it, there's been so many days where, without realising the ginormous role the subconscious and it's patterns are playing, I'll be feeling so up against it and so defeated for no clear reason and yet other days I'll be feeling in the zone for hours and hours of study with no end in sight.
Bro the part where you brought up about changing your jumpshot every day is so accurate please go into more detail on how to use self two take control because my self 1 is always judging myself and that’s causing me to shoot worse some days. But some days I shoot amazing and I can never miss and I can shoot a division one level and some days I feel like I can’t even outshoot a kindergartener
Some days I will be practicing and I can never miss feel like I need a D1 offer right now but then next day I would be like OK yesterday I shot perfect let me do that again and now I can’t shoot like that anymore.
If you'll think you'll miss, You will probably miss. the moment you will attempt a shot always think that you'll gonna sink that shot you'll probably have 25 or more points! thanks for the trashtalking idea tho😂
I can only remember one time I was definitely in Self 2. It was a 5 on 5 game to 12 and I hit 6 threes. The last one was a give and go that was just so in rhythm and everyone was like, this guy just cannot miss. They were right.
I’ll be playing in a gym by myself (usually LA Fitness) and I’ll play really well, I get picked up, for a game, and as a kid, I get nervous with all those high schoolers and talented players. I start thinking about everything and worry about messing up. Thanks coach just got this book and i’m reading it.
In basketball practice I hit all my 3’s and the best shooter on the team but in a real game I make 50% of my shots. I know it’s all in my head need to be more self 2 in a real game. Thanks for the info!
okey, I am shooting coach and I have helped players to get their shooting percentage from 30% to 45-50%; pro players; youth etc. :) I teach from a deep practice perspective, there is a book "talent code" and it works! I think biggest problem is that players and COACHES don't know what biomechanics should be for shooting in the first place, but when you give your body correct freedom it will repeat with time same mechanics consistently ... maybe this is the first time I disagree with you? :D :) because in my 5-6 year or work I have experienced real results by teaching consciousness over feelings :) of course in games it is more about "self 2" or even 100% "self 2" ... even then I have successful examples of thing about one specific kay while shooting in-game; same about free throw
Does this only apply to skills that you already have? For example do you want to be in a type 1 mindset when learning a skill then once you’re able to start getting reps in you wanna shift to type 2
You still want to be in the self 2 non judgement zone. Self 1 will cloud your perception of what's really happening because it's being preoccupied of what's "good" or "bad".
Oh my fucking God, why did I watch this guy so late. Ey, man props thank you a lot. Last days I became player 1 and first days and in the practice it went well but now I have noooo self confidence what is horrible!! 🤯
I understand but how do we improve by failing and correcting however you do have to get a feel and adjust your own style to it with that rhythmic flow! Once you find a more comfortable form ans adjust that make that you're new killer way .... Here is why lonzo ball example one ... tim Tebow there's a reason. Why they tell us to square up face the basket and follow through yes there is a flow about the game and about our shots however you can't Shawn Marion your way through... you gotta practice and make adjust.ents find your balance and or " FORTE" if you may when it comes to shooting that ball or finding a few go to moves or sweets spots you have to practice maybe watch vidéo.... baseball there are reasons why they have ways of doing thibgs GUILDELINES
Amaaaaazing video! The question is, when you're learning something new, how much time should you spend correcting technique, and when have you corrected enough to go with the flow and trust your self 2. What could you suggest there? Thanks!
the point is to practice your mechanics so you never have to think about it. if you're thinking about your mechanics in game, most of the time you're going to miss

This is so true my bounce when just playing defense is much higher than if someone asks me “jump as hogh as u can”
So fax. When I try to do a max jump I just think bout blocking a shot.
Yesss! Im jumping MUCH higher going subconciously for a rebound than trying to dunk. Also Im way faster chasing after a ball than trying to Run a 100m Sprint
The Best Basketball video/tutorial/tip/trick I have Ever seen on UA-cam, NO CAP

I love this cause I can apply this to ANYTHING, basketball is just a great analogy for this self 1 vs self 2.

Overthinking is bad just trust instinct be confident and you will be on the zone. Once your in the zone nobody can stop you

For the first time Isee a person exactly describing what's happening in my brain .
For six years I have been on self one and always correcting myself
“Become a killer on the court”. Become a murderer on the ping pong table. Become a SAVAGE on the Pommel Horse.

Maybe there's a missing key, that conects conscient training with the no thinking shoot in a game
Of course it is assumed that players have the proper mechanics down first
Does this only apply to skills that you already have? For example do you want to be in a type 1 mindset when learning a skill then once you’re able to start getting reps in you wanna shift to type 2
laserglider think so
you cans still use self 2 to learn
You still want to be in the self 2 non judgement zone. Self 1 will cloud your perception of what's really happening because it's being preoccupied of what's "good" or "bad".
Keyword : SELF *2
JT gotta try to do that in 8:12 to Steph...AHAHAHA maybe thats the only way he will miss...
This is awesome - such a key part of the game
The whole point of any kind of training or practice is to repeat the desired behavior enough times that it becomes autonomic. (i.e. Self-2)
This is way too relatable

So true
I completely agree but this doesn’t work that perfectly with the jump shot, the better shooting mechanics the easier it will be to be consistent
the point is to practice your mechanics so you never have to think about it. if you're thinking about your mechanics in game, most of the time you're going to miss
How to become self 2
All in all don’t let your mind control your body.
Let your body control itself.

how do I stay in self 2 or get in it

In traditional archery, it's called instinctive shooting.
