This song turned me on to a sound from Camden town that cooled my head. Then I heard like a shot from my skull to my brain and I decided the Gaslight Anthem was the best band ever.
Brian Fallon, the lead singer, wrote this song as a dedication to Joe Strummer, frontman of legendary punk band the Clash, who went by the name Woody while he was still a hippie folk singer, before he went punk. He died a peaceful death years later of an undiagnosed heart problem in his sleep.
This band played in my friends garage (ludlow, mass) to about 15 people with the riot before and make do and mend, right when this album came out. Boy did they blow up quick.
The Clash's first album blew me away. I was hooked. Strummer probably one of the best musicians and lyricists of that entire genre. When he died, it was like losing a friend. And at such a young age. This song is my go to when I feel like I've been screwing up, and then I remember "You're doing alright." Thanks for this song, GA!
I will never get over how great these guys are. Brians got so much passion and power in his voice and the music is just magical. They have honestly changed my life completly.
Brian has said in interviews that it's about him as a youth when he discovered the Clash. Joe Strummer of the Clash used to call himself 'Woody' in honor of one of his personal idols, Woody Guthrie. " I carried these songs like a comfort wherever I go"
I've heard this song all of my life. Me and my older brother used to spend our summers together alone because my parents were always working. He listened to punk all the time and got me into it at a very early age. I loved this song when I was little and I have heard it almost everywhere I've been since. It's really cool to be able to hear this song again and kinda remind me of what punk is about and how I got into it. Which is basically the same way described in this song. I still enjoy punk to this day for more reasons than I can count, one of those reasons being this song.
What I love about this as a tribute to Joe Strummer is Gaslight Anthem obviously really knows something about him: he called himself "Woody" (after Woody Guthrie) before he was in the Clash, and they reference Strummer's recent solo work as well. True fans, a real epic anthem. Great job. It's a bluebeat attack!
Absolutely awesome...GA and Deer Tick are two of the best bands in many years. Unfortunately, the days of album rock bands are long past. Keep it up GA. So impressive.
+IAM GENISIS (IAMGENISIS) so many hours (weeks) of my life i spent listening to this song while i played that game. i think i'll have to re-purchase it.
good stuff!! lot's of beers, lot's of Jack and lot's of Marley kicking off the vibe...and after blasting this song on the street, lots of nice girlies looking for the party. Gracias Gaslight, for helping kick off this party!!!!
I discovered this band about a year ago and they are just amazing, they haven't written anything I don't absolutely love. If you haven't heard their other songs, I suggest you get your ass in gear and check them out.
i saw them live the other day....he always smiles like he is throughout this video and interacted with the crowd well....not to mention the musics friggin awsome
Holy crap! Almost 130,00 views! I am so amazed at how popular this guys have got so quickly! I feel quite proud to say I fell in love with their music before they made a name. Long live Gaslight!
I am SO excited, concert coming soon to NJ, I am going. I bet my friend that in a year TGA will be famous to all people that like this genre. wish me luck in a year!!
i was singing this song at work everone asked me who wrote the song i just told them "the very last gang in town" the gaslight anthem might be my #1 band of 08 this song made me cry the first time thru awesome band
i wanted to go on a concert of let3, but since it was cancelled, i took a ticket for any other show at same day, and it was gaslight anthem! the shows on sunday, and to be prepared, i bought their last record, and its amazing!!
seen them live twice now, Reading festival then the astoria II in London. Going in Feb to The Shepards Bush Empire.. They are great live, get tickets if you ever get the chance
Until I saw a lyrics video for this, I thought this was a song about a mad scientist turning people into sound. I was a little babby when I first heard it.
Last Gang in Town. Joe, you'll always be my one and only true hero - 'I got your name tattooed inside of my arm'. There'll never be such a great man as you were. Thank you for beeing there!
Just found these guys and i gotta say they are amazing. Definately got the Strummer/Springsteen influence in there music. This song makes me sad because its a tribute to Strummer, the godfather of punk. One man said when Joe died "Now all the punks are orphans", so true. Gonna get me another strummer tat, already got his face and guitar on me.
hadn't thought about this song in 10 years and yesterday i was having nuclear diarrhea from food poisoning and for some reason the chorus just appeared in my head where he says "let it out let it out let it out you're doing alright" and that's the story of how i got this song stuck in my head for 2 hours while i shat my brains out, thought id come give it a listen and let everyone know
What scene was from AP? Most of the movie was filmed in Pittsburgh. I remember a few scenes filmed in Red Bank (Jack's Music, Red Bank Catholic High School girls, etc) but there were no obvious AP references that I recall offhand.
Mark my words this band is going to take over the world. They are by far the best band going today in every way! Go see them now while you can still see them in a small venue cause in a year there gonna be selling out area's
with this song being on skate it an skate 2 its gonna get them so much recognition, ive known of them for quite a while but not there getting bigger go on you jersey boys :P
Damn good to hear a band give credit to the great Joe Strummer(who used to go by the name Woody before he became Joe Strummer in the Clash). The Anthem is awesome!
of course, because rap and hip hop is inherently bad, who cares about kendrick lamar or public enemy and what they have to say right? your comment only shows your close mindedness, a music fan should listen to everything from jazz to shoegaze to metal to classical
+Fierce Deity Wolf Link nick cave sang about rape and murder, johnny cash wrote "i shot a man in reno just to watch him die" and yet we give them leeway, why not give the same courtesy to NWA or public enemy or dre?
It is obvious that the 2 of the 3 places where they filmed this in Asbury Park are the Casino and the Metropolitan Hotel (may it rest in peace) but which restaurant were they playing in? Looks like either Mattison Park or Market in the Middle. My hunch is the former. Anybody know?
@dragon53777 I agree. I will still listen to them even if they get Fall Out Boy big (then again, I'm not one of those people who stops listening to a band just because they're huge). I will even try to go to one of their shows, even though I hate huge concerts with a passion. Pushing and shoving = not my thing. I certainly hope I get to see them before then. Either way, I'm always be able to say I was a fan before everyone knew about them.

For me its skate it memories
Best skate of all time and has best sound track

The Clash.

All these years later and this is still my favorite TGA song. Hope to see them play it live some day!
RIP Joe Strummer. I miss you every bit as much as Brian does.
Yes, sadly, very few know this, most of them relate this to a video game, or some show, any way, Love ya Joe, miss ya.
It’s been 20 years today and I still miss joe. This is the song that made me love gaslight anthem
This band played in my friends garage (ludlow, mass) to about 15 people with the riot before and make do and mend, right when this album came out. Boy did they blow up quick.
The Riot Before... hellyeah. They were awesome af too. Wish they would get back together as well
thats awesome bro lol
The Clash's first album blew me away. I was hooked. Strummer probably one of the best musicians and lyricists of that entire genre. When he died, it was like losing a friend. And at such a young age. Brian wrote this song in honor of Joe Strummer, I sing and listen to it in honor of Brian and I carry his songs like a comfort wherever I go.
+Runawayto Sam'sTown goddamn joe strummer was the shit RIP. #comagirl
Wait did Brian die?
I will never get over how great these guys are. Brians got so much passion and power in his voice and the music is just magical. They have honestly changed my life completly.

I swear having Death or Glory and this in Skate 2 was deliberate.
What I love about this as a tribute to Joe Strummer is Gaslight Anthem obviously really knows something about him: he called himself "Woody" (after Woody Guthrie) before he was in the Clash, and they reference Strummer's recent solo work as well. I love the references to Coma Girl, among others. RIP Joe.
2021 and still listening to this reminds me of the SKATE2 days 🤘🏻♥️
man, this band was really good back in the day... miss their old stuff... gaslight anthem and the 59 sound by far their best album...
Listening to this song for about a decade now and and it still bangs!!
This band and this just never get old. Rock n' Roll at it's finest this century.
Simply one of the best bands out. Read the lyrics, you'll be hooked! Gotta love the edge they bring to the stage.
hahahaha, when he starts laughing in the first verse cos he knows he's gonna push him out of the way. he can't keep his face straight. haha
Absolutely awesome...GA and Deer Tick are two of the best bands in many years. Unfortunately, the days of album rock bands are long past. Keep it up GA. So impressive.

This is awesome, a song about Joe Strummer! And sounds like Springsteen, great combination!

What scene was from AP?
Most of the movie was filmed in Pittsburgh. I remember a few scenes filmed in Red Bank (Jack's Music, Red Bank Catholic High School girls, etc) but there were no obvious AP references that I recall offhand.
I have been in love with this band for 5 years and i force them upon all my friends, perfect drinking music
Still awesome in 2021. The song that started my love affair with TGA.
Awesome tune, Benny cracks me up!
I love this song because it basically describes how I felt when I listened to The Clash for the first time!
22nd December 2002. Ten years have skirted by. The legacy lives on.
ive been looking for this song for a while!
Saw them on Sunday at Hyde Park. Springsteen joined them for one song - 59 Sound. Awesome!
Woody'da been proud!

of course, because rap and hip hop is inherently bad, who cares about kendrick lamar or public enemy and what they have to say right?
your comment only shows your close mindedness, a music fan should listen to everything from jazz to shoegaze to metal to classical
adam hey I'm only talking about bad rap like sex drugs and guns shit. All the others are fine
+Fierce Deity Wolf Link nick cave sang about rape and murder, johnny cash wrote "i shot a man in reno just to watch him die" and yet we give them leeway, why not give the same courtesy to NWA or public enemy or dre?
@clashdog1 Nice to see that there are still some people with a REAL Music taste. :) You made my day!
Zajebisty kawałek !!! Greet from Poland !
my favorite song from this album.
this song did not deserve a band aid brand comercial in the beggining BECAUSE THIS SONG IS JUST TOO GOOD!!!!!
@acaash Yeah, it was an amazing show. It was the third time I saw The Gaslight Anthem. New Politics was amazing too. I bought their CD and a shirt.

+theubermensche1 It's on "Sink or Swim" their first album. It's definitely on Spotify, just checked.
+Kevin Slack It's not on Spotify UK.

Must be a licensing issue. It's not on Spotify Germany as well.
I can't find that album on spotify anymore :(
It is obvious that the 2 of the 3 places where they filmed this in Asbury Park are the Casino and the Metropolitan Hotel (may it rest in peace) but which restaurant were they playing in?
Looks like either Mattison Park or Market in the Middle. My hunch is the former. Anybody know?

Yeah, Old Joe change a lot of lives back in the day, including mine.
The saviors of Rock'n'Roll !!
Probably my favorite Gaslight song.
Big Ups to you guys for paying respect to Joe and "The Last Gang In Town"
@dragon53777 I agree. I will still listen to them even if they get Fall Out Boy big (then again, I'm not one of those people who stops listening to a band just because they're huge). I will even try to go to one of their shows, even though I hate huge concerts with a passion. Pushing and shoving = not my thing.
I certainly hope I get to see them before then. Either way, I'm always be able to say I was a fan before everyone knew about them.
Amazing song. I hope they play this when I see them... I know it's an older song. 1:00 in... Sweet!!!
