Planted Blackwater Tank for my Betta Macrostoma Fry
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- It's about time I made a planted blackwater tank! This is the new tank for my "accidental" betta macrostoma fry. Blackwater tanks are tanks that have tannin-rich water, making the water look a dark tan or brown color. it is a great way to keep sensitive species that thrive in darker, low-PH water in their natural habitats.

Omg i could listen to penny talk about betta fish forever
Good because I could talk about betta fish forever :D
I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a rusty fork. That being said I love love love her videos and they are very well done and even more informative.. I turn on closed captioning and mute the videos. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears but I am addicted to her videos and MUST watch them all!!!
@@nickschmitz7044 Why would you... comment this on somebody's channel...? What in your right mind told you this was acceptable behaviour?
She is a voice artist too, or something like that.
something i didnt know i needed in life until now, the voice of my fav character ever, Penny, talking about Betta fish. where has this been all my life!
Aww thank you
They look so cute! Little miracle babies are gonna be living life there for sure :)
😄😄
Oh this makes me happy! An animal keeping channel that doesn't demand my attention the way AntsCanada does. Something I can just turn on in the background while I do my schoolwork while supporting one of my favorite VAs!
Plus, imagining Penny talking about keeping fish is so cute. Keep doing you, Taylor! :)
I've gotten multiple comments about AntsCanada lately, I need to go check out that channel
Very adorable fish, and happy you had fun with voicing Penny in RWBY! I'm still so sad about that ending.
I started investing in chola wood to grow and sell java fern, it never hit me that i am a java fern dealer until i made enough to buy a rimless tank haha.
Hey that's smart! Were you growing it emersed?
You have an amusing layer of eccentricity in your enthusiasm 😂. You're truly a woman of your craft. Keep doing what you love, God bless 🌿🐟
Haha you're too kind
Your Betta fry are so pretty. I love the fish that look truly wild.
Thanks! I love them : )
For high ph. Get a container fill it with dried sphagnum moss I did half way, then fill the rest up with straight up tap water. Let it sit for a day. When you go to use it the ph will be in the 5 or lower range, depends on what your tap water is originally. Also you can keep using the same sphagnum moss for a long time
Nice little tank. I was under the impression that needle leaf and narrow leaf have were the same thing. I’m no expert though. I just put a bunch of narrow leaf java fern and bolbitis in a little tank with a couple of crypts and a few stems to break it all up. I’m hoping some of these will start growing out of the water.
I have heard that any "needle leaf" sold 'round these parts is actually narrow leaf, but needle leaf should be it's own variety that is skinnier. Time will tell if my 2 different purchases end up looking the same!
I liked the first setup you did with the logs makes it look more dynamic.
Me too, I'll fix it when the wood stops trying to float on me ;)
I saw a video once where they boiled the catalog leaves for a few minutes, let them cool, and dropped them in the tank. Boiling made the leaves sink and release the tannins quicker. Love the wood pieces!! :)
Oh yeah! I'll make a big pot of "tea" with a few leaves. When it cool I'll throw the old leaves into the tank AND the super dark leaf tea
Instead of using "lead" on risome plants, I glue them to a small pebble. Looks much more natural and keeps em down and in place :)
And works for Bolbitus too ;)
Yeah that would look nice!
Could you maybe do a how to breed beta fish
@@amandarowe572 she has a whole Playlist on it mate ....check the Playlist section u will get it
i dont really plan on getting into the hobby of betta fish and keeping aquatic animals but this channel is relaxing :)
One of my friends showed me your channel because we both love RWBY, I never though much about keeping fish until I came here and now I'm kind of obsessed with watching fish keeping videos.
That's awesome!
I've been growing Monte Carlo and S. repens in a clear glass bowl emersed on my window sill for months but it never dawned on me to do the same thing with my java fern plantlets. Thanks for the idea. 🙂
I never considered it either until just last video! I'm really curious if I'll notice faster growth
The Betta macrostoma tank came out great! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. :D
I'm so glad! Thank you :)
@@SimplyBetta You're welcome. 😁
You present your videos in an interesting, information and fun way
I appreciate that!
Blackwater is so stunning!!
I really enjoy the format of your videos, I like the little extra pinch of production value you add. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate that, thank you! It's something I put a lot of time into so I like when people notice ;P
I’m in love with the betta “puppies” in the tank, watching you work on the black water tank. Their colors are gorgeous. PS: I love the unusual botanicals I’ve ordered from Tannin Aquatics. Scott is great to work with, everything obtained responsibly and the blackwater tanks shown on the website are inspirational.
Haha they are like little fish puppies
They're so cute such a big tank for babies
TAYLOR!!!!! OMG!!!! THAT FISH TANK LOOKS SOO COOL!!! I LOVE IT!!! Very excited to see how you continue upgrading it :DD
hey thank you! I love it so far :D
You're basically the AntsCanada of fish and I love it. Same sort of energy and passion and everything!
You are so relatable & I absolutely love watching your channel. I’m a mom of two and have quickly become a betta enthusiast. It’s so cool to see it’s possible to juggle mom life and be a betta breeder. I’m completely inspired by you. I hope to someday have a Simply Betta by Taylor. (I keep checking your website) :)
I have (soon to be) 3 tanks and none of them are betta tanks, however - I do love the venn diagram of shrimpkeeping and bettakeeping and super appreciate you pointing out the overlaps specifically!
HAha, I'm trying so hard NOT to be a shrimpkeeper at the moment :D
@@SimplyBetta I started my shrimp tank with scraps I had laying around... An old betta tank and gear, plant clippings from my 55 gallon, and "pest" snail pals... I wound up being super into it and upgrading to a much bigger shrimp only tank very shortly after, to be fair haha
I'm guessing bucephalandra! Love the new tank!
That's my guess, too. I love buce, esp. the skeleton ones.
Oo yay another video!!!! Loving the frequent uploads!
Glad you like them!
Aww little accident fry are so cute! They are going to LOVE this tank! They now have a fantabulous setup (from you and your hard work of course!!). I know it is pretty early in their life and hard to tell but wouldn’t it be awesome to have a male and a female? Then you could have another pair to try with!
I can't tell yet, I REALLY hope I have a male in there :0
The new setup came out great.
Thanks : )
Im just getting all caught up ... can't wait for you to have some bettas and plants available!! Wow those Betta Macrastoma are HUGE!!
Yeah they're so big and awesome! ;D
@@SimplyBetta I think it’s so cool how the female pick up the fallen eggs and gives them to the male! Team work! Human men have a lot to learn from these males! 😆
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Those are some lucky babies.
Thank you
I love the gravel removal method!
Haha yeah, it's so much better than scooping it out!
wow, i had no idea that b. macrostoma had such pretty babies!
Hello 👋 these ones won’t make your naughty list with that awesome set up! Happy place acquired 👍
Fingers crossed!
Yay! Can't wait to see this tank mature :)
Me too! ;D
Hi Taylor! Happy you're back to doing more frequent videos. You are one of my favs! 🐟
Aww thank you so much, I'm trying hard to be consistent! :D
Keep up the great work on Betta fish, my favorite too (4 tanks)!
The tank looks good!
Java fern will look really nice with that wood when it grows!
Any thing u do with tanks it always looks amazing
Aww thank you : P
Tyler, tank looks great, look forward to the update - from NYC.....
Thanks Frank : )
Such a nice set up for them! I'm loving the look
Thank you!! 😊
I JUST HAPPENED TO STUMBLE ACROSS AN ANIMATED VIDEO ABOUT YOUR LOVE OF BETTA FISH, AND I AM NOW COMPLETE!!!
This is amazing, and I love the fish too 💚
Welcome aboard!
I'll definitely need to check out those stickers and drip line. Gorgeous tank! Those babies are so lucky to have you.
Maybe you'll be known as a betta macrostoma breeder some day if you continue having miracle babies. 😂
Looks just like some airline hose, airline flow regulator en some sort of clip to me.. you probably already have to tools at home to make one yourself.
@@RichD1011 Yeah, probably, but I'm lazy. Lmfao. I was mostly interested in what was keeping the tubing hooked over the top tbh. If it's too much I could DIY one myself, but I definitely don't have a spare bleed valve right now, I know that much.
Yep, its air line, a flow regulator, and a hook on the top made from rigid airline that is bent nicely. Easily DIYed with all the supplies but convenient to buy, lol
those babies are so cute, the tanks gonna look great when that java fern grows out 😤👊🏽
I sure hope so! :D Thank you
Hi Taylor. Enjoy your videos full of info and big personality 🤣. Looking forward to seeing mommy’s little helper too when they’re old enough.
Thanks so much!!

Awesome aquarium, I love dark water!!
Me too! Especially if it inhibits algae haha
@@SimplyBetta do you use a UV filter?
Nope : )
Good stuff, as always. Thanks for sharing!
The tank looks great. Your fry will be very happy in their new home. Thanks for sharing. I hope you will be able to do a live stream for my aquarium Society, as our members will find your story very interesting and inspiring. Thanks for reminding fish keepers how great Bettas are as pets.
Hi William! Sorry for my late reply. Thank you for the kind words. I actually just did a livestream on the Pat's Fish Tanks channel!

Haha thank you, I appreciate it
Super nice tank..and fish. Remember if you wanted more tannins theres also liquid tannins you can put in the water to help with that. Love the vids ❤️
Yeah, thanks! :D
Hi! Greetings from Malaysia! My first time at your channel. I found your channel while searching macrostomas as I’ve begun to miss mine, and wanted to just look at some. There are myths as to what they need. Please bear with me while I try to dispel some of them. Unlike the imbellis for example, macrostomas live in rivers with varying ph but never low (so the pictures of their natural habitat that you showed is incorrect). They are shy compared to the splendens and rarely actually fight. They move to flooded areas during the monsoon and those that remain there when the water levels recedes will adapt to rising acidity. Now, the lowering of ph in their environment triggers hormones that stimulates them to breed. They do not breed as often as the splendens or imbellis so don’t worry if nothing happens for a while. The trick to breeding them is to keep a pair in relatively “high” ph, say 7.3 - 7.6, then slowly lower the ph to anywhere around 6 plus. Also, unlike the splendens they need cooler temperatures, do not go above 20 Celsius. Mine used to breed only about twice a year but that could be due to my not intentionally trying. Also, I never had many fry, just a few each time. Oh yes, for breeding build them a room (not joking). Not a must, but I find that that helps. My sincerest apologies if I come off sounding like a smart @$$. Enjoy the hobby, I’m missing mine. Cheers friend! Take care
Hello! Great vid can't wait to see the final set up
Hey, thanks!
Hi! Love your channel! Can't wait for you to get a bigger fish room in your place! You deserve it 😁
Hey thank you : ) I'll have a laaaaame update either late next week or the monday after!
Rhizome plant you haven't tried? I can't fathom the possibility you haven't done bucephelandra, so.... bolbitis? Something I've never heard of? Can't wait to see!
Also loved the little glimpse of the paradise fish! I've kind of wanted to try keeping one for a while (since I instinctually want anything that shares my name), but it hasn't been a priority due to limited tank space and the cooler water temp preference--my apartment is not air conditioned and can get up to 25 C or so in the summer, so I'd be nervous about stressing them out even with an unheated tank :( I'd love to see a longer video about your paradise fish, though, and how you've found the experience of keeping one!
Hi Taylor, love that tank. I recently bought a 20 long to use as a quarantine tank but now I may but a betta in it. I like the 30” long tank vs a standard 20. I have kept fish for years but never had a betta. I agree that betta is awesome! I may have to get me one. Thanks for the inspiration.
I love the 20g dimensions! I hope you get a betta :)
When are you going to start selling them again?
Very cool setup, should fill in nicely. As far as Tannen color, I have seen others boil some botanicals and use the water like a concentrate.
Keep the news and how-tos coming.
Yeah, I do that for water changes! I either make "tea" like that or use a blackwater extract product ;)
Great video. The babies are beautiful.
That is so pretty! Love it!!!!
Thank you! 😊
Love your videos! So inspiring. Keep the Betta Macrostoma vids coming as I need more info. Really hoping to get a pair myself ❤️.
Hello from Tijuana, Mexico! Love your vídeos!
Hello Javier! Muchas gracias por saludar
Thanks for reminding me of to get my H20 ready.
Nice work! I also use plant weights on my epiphytes! Such a great idea.
Looks beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
It looks great! Love those bettas and might try them one day! Maybe buy your babies haha! I think your going to put buce in there? Can’t wait for the update!
I'm adding something that isn't buce! I want to add buce though, haha. I hope to have some babies available again one of these days, I had to take a break from breeding this winter so I don't have much
@@SimplyBetta look forward to seeing what you add! I understand selling and moving sucks! Hopefully you get more babies out of them and you sell them for a decent price haha they eeeeexpeeeeensive! 🤣
Looks Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love it. I swear everytime I watch one of your video I get a explosive URGE to start another brand NEW tank..... This is a problem~
I really love bettas
Beautiful betta. Im going to find more info about them
You should!
Love watching your videos very informative
I wonder if the gravel cap impacts the effectiveness of the buffering substrate and water parameters
Nope! My water changes are minimal, anyways. Smaller water changes (like 5-10%) make sure that there are no fluctuations
Those babies are huge!
Yeah, and growing fast!
Those little babies are beautiful! With such a rich nutrient soil in there how about planting some crypts? Like some cryptocoryne balansae! Or cryptocoryne wend/brown! ♥
Perfect home for to really cool fish.
I think so too!
I want to see an update on the Java fern propagation, I never would have thought of that…
The fish are gorgeous!’
Very pretty babies. Im hoping you'll do something with moss
Thank you! Some moss might be in my future ;P
Ooh! This is so pretty! How did the plant weights work out? I’m wanting to try that on my Java ferns.😊
love watching you.
I appreciate that!
I can't wait to get my first betta in my first planted aquarium eek!
You can do it! Let me know if you have any questions ; P
So a part of your house is basically a five star fish hotel and that's amazing
Also you said 🤣"waterlogged"🤣 while holding the wood you prepared for your fish
Also just discovered your channel through a penny animation on Twitter and your love for fish especially betta fish had me sold because I absolutely love that species of fish sadly I wish the way i took care of them embodied that without going into specifics I sadly have fish blood on my hands due to me not doing things such as research on how to prepare and take care of them before and after I get them but if I ever decide to get another one with the wholehearted intention to give them the best care possible i will watch a few of your videos first can't wait for more😉
OMG I missed a perfectly good pun 😰
Thanks for stopping by! I'm sure you will have great luck with your future fish ;)
@@SimplyBetta i will give it my all next time but I think I should hold off for a bit until my next betta i don't want anymore to suffer under my care ill be really someday
Cant wait to get my first wild betta pair! You are the reason I even ever considered getting some! Thank you so much for fueling my addiction haha
You are so welcome! Haha
Beautiful fish
Hello I love your channel, keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Great video, beautiful betta. I'm guessing for the new rhizome plants🤔 bucephalandra 🙂
When my Java fern leaves start throwing off a bunch of babies I just float them on top of the tank and they grow much faster up there, I guess they get more CO2 exchange out of the water, or partially out of the water and at the top anyway and then they don’t melt when I put them under. I like the dark water, the tank looks great. :)
Snails are great for cycling a tank also. If you drop Hey nerite snail in there and feed it that will create enough ammonia. But they would need KH as well.
I’m guessing Bucephilandra? I have no idea how that’s actually spelled though. 😂
Yeah, floating the babies would probably work fine! They're finally taking off in that little emersed setup now though!
Close! I'm thinking about getting buce as well but I have a totally different plant I'm trying! :D
@@SimplyBetta lol I thought that was buce. Lol plants are so confusing. I tried an immersion thing but it just got a mold in it so I threw it all away. I always have huge plans for tanks when I set them up but plants never want to stay down and some grow like crazy and others die or don’t grow very well, I just stick everything in there and hope it stays down now. Eventually finds a place in there somewhere. Now that I’ve started using liquid fertilizer regularly everything seems to be doing well, I buy all Java ferns and Anubis and one other long bushy thing that grows really fast but I can’t remember the name of. Lol. I’ve never been able to keep plants before but I haven’t done it for years but I think I kind of have it down now for the easy plants anyway. I want to get a 50 gallon flat with a decent light over it and just make a grow up tank or I can put all the little baby plants I just let them grow underwater come up for me they seem to do a lot better, Though the ones I bought at Petco in those little tubes seem to be doing pretty well. O_o I like those bettas but they seem a lot bigger so I’m guessing they’re not too great with little shrimp? I’ve learned to love snails and with shrimp and a low fish load and plants these are some of the cleanest and best smelling tanks I’ve ever had. I just have tiny fish now so I’m sure that’s part of it but these don’t smell at all and they’re much easier to take care of.
You would love my water here, 6.5 pH no KH no GH 60ppm out of the faucet. I have to mix in the salts and minerals to add the KH and GH and get the pH up, but it’s pretty close to our oh water right out of the Fossett. I still put a D chlorinator in but I don’t think there’s any in it, I live up on top of a mountain and I guess the reservoir up here has pretty soft water. I do miss being able to use straight tapwater though, I would love to build an auto change system. I’ve seen some of those beta tanks that are tiny but have a safe and system that sucks the water from the bottom, I think a system like that on a bunch of smaller tanks at a store or for your situation would be pretty awesome because add a new water would push all the waist through the exit tube on the bottom and there be pretty much no cleaning. 🤔 lol yes I overthink everything. 😂😂 i’ve already got your whole new fish room planned and I don’t think you’ve even moved yet. 😂😂😂
@@SimplyBetta Kabamba 😂😂 that’s the bushy floaty plant that grows really fast. Lol I just remembered it
You do have super soft water! Lol I would love it. My water is really hard, it would be great if I were "Simply Cichlids"
You should totally make a plant tank! Then it will probably turn into a regular ol' fish tank over time and you'll need another dedicated plant tank. And the cycle will continue.
@@SimplyBetta Sadly it’s even too soft for that, unfortunately when I moved here I started a tank with a bunch of plants and for guppies and after about three weeks almost on cue all for guppies died within two days and the plants were very hard to keep alive. That’s when I learned about water hardness and GH and KH and bought some stuff to mix with the water than it was fine but even the plants were dying in the water. It’s basically RO water. You have to do is way more liquid fertilizer if there are no salts or minerals in the water already. It’s easy enough, I just fill up a bucket with 5 gallons of water and put a quarter teaspoon of equilibrium and something else in there and that seems to be working. I don’t really worry about PH, if the KH and GH are balanced it sort of figures itself out. It’s still a little bit hard on narrates nails, they get white spots on their shells. They seem to live a long time, one is almost 2 years old but I probably won’t replace them, I’ll just let the pond snails do it all. I thought of doing softer water and other plants but substrate is kind of a pain. Lol. Someday maybe but if I do it I want to do a pretty big tank, 150+gal. I’m looking to move again so I’m hoping the next place will have a little better water to deal with. I would love to just do an automated system with a sprinkler system and Instant water heater. I like automated everything. 😂
yaaaayyyyyyyyyyy a new video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I 💘ur channel.
Thanks so much!
I don't know how helpful this is for you since your issue was the male eating the babies, but since we're talking about dirty water, I thought I'd add this excerpt from Diana Walstad's book:
"Green water algae is not always a curse. For example, I set up a 10 gal 'Demo' planted tank at work with a female and male Betta. The tank almost immediately developed an embarrassing case of green water algae. I struggled mightily to get rid of the green water algae- to no avail. Then, my co-workers pointed out that the Bettas in the tank had spawned and there were babies! After that, I left the tank alone. (I did remove the parents who would eventually have eaten the babies.) Thirteen babies survived. They grew very well, feasting on the many little protozoa that were feeding on the green water algae and soil-associated bacteria in this tank's rich ecosystem." - Ecology of the Planted Aquarium
I agree! Algae isn't bad. Sometimes in my vids of my old fish room I would emphasize that, yes my tanks were ugly and full of algae, but that isn't a bad thing. It's just ugly
Its so hard to find current Macrostoma videos and then you uploaded
Try to add some floating plants also
Right on! :D
Hello, great video! The fry look great in there. Is the mystery plant Becephalandra? I have some in my Betta tank (Kedegang).
I would guess your new plants might be bucephalandra varaieties. And I woul congrate you on those, 'cause they are beatiful. All Bucephalandras are! ^^
It isn't buce! But I might add a bunch of buce now, too ;P
