Nano 1.5 Gallon Blackwater Aquarium with DIY Background

- I've had this tank for awhile now and wanted to test out some new background techniques... and thus this setup was born. As I said in the video, I think the combination of elements really come together to create something beautiful. Even with all of the details, the setup is quite simple. I think that's one of the reasons I enjoy this one.
Here's a link to the tank I used in this video: bit.ly/2v9p7tI
I also like how the background turned out. It was an experiment, but I think it looks/functions well. I've shown methods similar to this using silicone, but it tends not to hold onto items long-term when submerged underwater. I believe that's due to the flexible nature of silicone. I'll show more about this technique in a future video.
Should I put the catfish in this tank or something else? Let me know what you think!

Another one in the books! I really like out this one turned out and can't wait till the bolbitis grows up and out of the water... that' will take a long time though. I want to let this establish for a couple of weeks prior to adding anything... Dwarf Anchor or something else? Let me know!
EDIT: I'm fine! I just tried to record my voice in a way that sounded less script-like. Always a work in progress 🤷♂️
Add the fish
SerpaDesign I'm lesbian but I want this guys wood ;)
i love shrimp...put some shrimps..the pod i think would be great for the shrimps or fishes to breed and nest...
SerpaDesign, I read a bit about Hara jerdoni on German forums because I was thinking of getting a few. They need moving water and like currents. The recommended tank size is 60cm (about 23.5inch) width as a minimum and they apparently like living in groups.
Your tank is beautiful but unfortunately not suitable for your anchor.
Have you thought about aquatic insects? Like aquatic isopods?
Dwarf anchor, pretty please 🙏🥺
This is too dreamy 🥰 I like the not-perfectly-constrained Tanner❤️ and this nano tank is just dropdead gorgeous!! 👏 I have been wanting to see the catfish in just the right surroundings! If these are acceptable living conditions for those - pleease! Go ahead 😍 a perfectly discrete jewel! Just like you! 👍🏼😙❤️👌😄
Are you ok Tannar? You don't sound as hyped up as you normally are. Get some rest my guy, you deserve it :)
I just tried recording my voice differently 🤷♂️
Yeah man, you sound kinda down.
@@SerpaDesign I liked how relaxed you sounded, a kind of chill video instead of high energy and hype!
I found it really relaxing too
I was also worried, hope you're all good my dude
that small stones in the background really gives the natural aesthetic...
matching upload schedules lol.
finished watching. great look tanner. Love that background!
Been uploading at this time for years now 😎
I love both of your guys of videos and the tank looks amazing 10 out of 10. Keep up with the good work. Love you guys
I just watched both of your vids
Haha. Just finished MDs video and then straight to SherpaDesign!

personally I think the tank is to small for the fish especially with no filter but having a snail centric tank with your beautiful scape is more than enough!! :)
I agree with it. For any vertebrate animal I would not go under 5 gallons of water just because their metabolism is higher and they would produce too much waste for the amount of water available. (It would likely require daily water changes and would make it unstable, especially without a filter to hold all the denitrifying bacterias) Perhaps some shrimps would do, but I personally like it with some snails only.
I'm generally more concerned with quick temperature fluctuations. While in general animals and plants can thrive in more conditions than we give them credit for they love stability.
In a centally cooled/heated animal room tho, it is fine.
Plants simply will reduce ammonia significantly. I'd say don't underestimate them but on the other hand: Overestimating gives a margin for error.
I'd include fare more fast growing plants for metal and nutrient removal. Small tanks need more maintenance.
Shrimp will do find in my experience.
@@a.b.8080 I think you're giving plants too much credit here. They can remove excess nutrients, etc., but not very efficiently. One or two plants plus the floating ones wouldn't even offset the output from the snails.
When I saw the Carinian Pods I immediately thought that I'd like to live there if I were a scrimp. They'd make lovely hidey-holes.
OMG you say scrimp too?! I actually add an L for scrilmp! You made me smile..TOO FUNNY!
It could be cool to just let some micro fauna such as cyclops or daphnia live in there. Also would work as fish food for your other fish!
A great idea! I have a daphnia and snail only bw nano at the moment. It is more fascinating than expected.
EVERY time I come back to the channel I can't help but be blown away by your work .
You are an inspiration to me and please don't stop making art.
Peace.
This is already the second video when you search blackwater tank👏
Stunning tank! The level of detail is amazing. You have wonderful ideas and I am constantly blown away by every new tank.
Finally, kept refreshing your channel. Thanks for giving me my serpadesign fix
nobody here that’s what the bell icon is for, helps out our man too
I love the nano builds cuz they give me ideas of what to stock my office at work with
these just keep getting better!!
Somehow the background for this one made me think of a beautiful museum display. I adore blackwater tanks and this one turned out wonderfully!
looks amazing! i think you could also make a desert-type terrarium with this kind of background
I agree! Would look pretty cool!
I love DIY backgrounds, but find the idea of taking on a project like that very intimidating. It never occurred to me to do a tiny one like this to get my feet wet, so thanks for the inspiration!
You should make a prehistoric themed riparium with things like the resurrection plant and triops in the water
That plant would not work in a riparian setting. It would have to a selaginella that doesn't mind having wet feet.
@@SerpaDesign Ah okay, that would still make for a cool riparium though
It would be cool if you could add some common fossil stones or petrified wood too in the scape
Yeah i tried using the resurrection plant in a tank, isipod rolly pollies just eat it, they love it
Love the Blackwater tanks and this definitely achieves what you were going for, the log sticking out the water with the floating plants around it looks incredible.
As always, you're the master of texture! It looks really good.
Stunning work as always! It really does look like a clean cut slice right out of a lake
I like how chill you sounded in this vid, its more relaxing. awesome tank too!
Oh that is some lovely tea water. The plants were a great touch, and I'm gonna have to remember the background creation process.
I've been fascinated by blackwater tanks for a long time but wasn't really sure where to start. This seems easy enough to do. I think I'll do it on a slightly larger scale for a betta or some African dwarf frogs. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us.
This came out awesome! Honestly one of my favorite builds of yours yet! It came out so realistic it’s insane! I dove the dark tinge in the water
Unusual! Really pretty... Glad you went with plants too
I’m really starting to like the black water tanks more than I ever thought I would. This one is beautiful and think the adding anchor catfish would really make it even better. Thanks for the tutorial Tanner!!!
Too small for any fish
This is so cool, I've never seen a blackwater tank set-up
This is so cool. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks!
man, i really love your blackwater set-ups! makes me want to create a blackwater tank of my own...
Greeting from Myanmar. Jeez, what an art, I wish I could do those backgrounds that easy. very glad I've found your channel. Keep them coming please.
I always enjoy your scapes. You are quite the artist.
That's 🔥🔥🔥 as usual. Good pairings
Out of all the projects I’ve seen, this one has been my favorite
Another super cool build! I love how natural your builds look.
I love it Tanner!! When you say you weren’t going to plant it at first, but then couldn’t help yourself made me laugh 😂 Of course you were going to plant it 🌱 It’s fantastic, I have a bristlenose pleca in my setup 👍🏽
Love your vids man! Keep up the great work
Thank you Tanner for another informative and epic tank! Your always inspiring me man!
I REALLY like this tank! Thanks so much for the inspiration …
It’s like looking into a pond. So cool
Right after I commented about a black water you upload one, and it's awesome!
I love the little fish! Although the tank looks great I think it deserves something bigger than that. Would love to see it again in another video!
Certainly has the wow factor looks amazing
Wow! You are so talented!
Omg. Brilliant. Tanner, you are so talented. Peace!
Very beautiful. Love the epoxy with garnet sand.
Once again I stand in aww, your design looks fantastic as always. Love your videos.
Beautiful little slice of nature ❤️
Yes please! I love blackwater setups
Really excellent. Nice job!
Really enjoyed this! Thanks!
very relaxing! nice balance between simple and detailed 💚
I think black water stuff is hugely under appreciated. I'd love to see some bigger setups like this, with roots etc, mimicking the Amazon or mangrove swamps. Thanks!
I agree! If you like this, wait till you see what I have in store for a future build.
oh man that looks awesome!
Love this! This gives me some ideas for my own nano aquarium. Although I love the look of the square tank, I have basically an unlimited supply of gallon jars so I should probably use those.
These videos always get me wanting more fish tanks.
that's such a neat tank! Love the root-y look of the spiderwort, it definitely looks like a cutout of a river-bank
A humble bow to your mad skills! Thanks for the pipedream...
absolutley wonderful, one of my favorites yet!
Love the build Tanner! Great work as always! I built two terrariums yesterday, inspired by your channel 🌱
Awesome! Good luck with your new terrariums 🌿
@@SerpaDesign thank you! I can't wait to see them grow and fill in ☺️
This is such a great, simple work. So inspiring!
I mentioned you doing this on your Instagram post and I'm so happy to see this happen!!
Another amazing project. When I first saw 'blackwater' I thought of something completely different. But this turned out fantastically well! Never saw anything like it!
Oh my, I have one word!! Stunning.
Love that tank came out really cool.
I really like the tank. It’s pretty awesome!
Damn Tanner you’re really pumping out these vids, I love it
Wow not only is this fantastic, but the quality and editing is 👏
Yet another great video!
I dig the new tone Tanner. I hope everything in your life is the same but you just decided to change your delivery. love
What a beautiful creation 👍👍❗️
It really blows my mind how you can do so much with so little space! Wow!
I love this !! I have 60 + tarantulas and a 20 gal. freshwater tank and I LOVE to create my enclosures and tanks as natural as possible . I am really impressed how beautiful this blackwater tank came out !! AMAZING !!!!!! I would have this in my " SACRED SPACE " in our home !
Wooow, that background!!!!!
Love the addition of tannins to make the water look more real
you do some awesome stuff!!!!! This video inspired me on a 12x12x18 zoomed terrarium I bought. I really wish I hadn't bought it, but now I have some inspiration to do something with it.
Love it, works brilliantly and looks amazing.
ur videos are amazing! thank you!
This is so spooky and cool!
Great design!
As awesome, beautiful job!! Keep up the great work
I really like how it contrasts with the other tanks.
another great video great job serpa i love your work
I don't even want to imagine the sound of scraping that styrofoam!! 😭
Beautiful build Tanner
absolutely beautiful!! You have much Talent. Very inspirational!
Yesssss the leaves are epic in there! 💙👌
you're setups are gorgeous. cant wait for that huge custom enclosure ;)
Looks great!
this one feels like a little slice of the back yard creek ❣️
Absolutely stunning 😍
Didn't expect it to look that great. Damn you're good man
Awesome tank! Maybe inverts would be better, since the floor space might be too small for the catfish. Thai micro-crabs could be great, they love hanging out in floating roots
Love the detail..
This can't be real, I searched for DIY aquarium backgrounds yesterday as I've got some upcoming plans... thank you very much!
I love this! Thank you for sharing!
the background is awesome :)
Well done!!
I love your blackwater builds. I always get such great ideas. My blackwater Spec is still doing good. It's very low maintenance. My betta I have in it is still healthy and happy and going strong even a year later. I actually just got a Fluval aquasky lighting system to set up for it and I'm hoping a less intense light and the timer will help with the algae that has bloomed up in it. I have 3 nerites in it and they are super lazy.
I've fallen in love with blackwater tanks after adding a beautiful piece of mopani wood to my 30 gallon. The water is super stable and my fish love it.
That tank looks great! I think the Anchor Cats will go really well in there.
It is too small for fish
Did you ever imagine having a following this large? You deserve more subscribers, in my opinion!
