I had all of Dios albums back then and the The Ultimate Sin album .. I just bought a bass guitar today and plan to learn at 59 years young..Thanks Phil 🎸
Aw this is absolutely entertaining and educational 😆 love these tutorials and love hearing the stories behind the music. Doing Jimmy proud my friend 🏴 Thanks Phil 🤩
I really enjoy this! I love playing Dio songs on bass, ive recently started learning some Rainbow and dang the bass lines are really sophisticated and fun to play!
This is GREAT. It's quite some time now that I'm falling in love (again, and more than ever) with the "classic heavy metal" music. The bass parts of that era of heavy music (and the general sound of it) are such an inspiration, such a pleasure to listen to. I'm watching all your masterclass videos and I hope you'll keep building the channel toward this idea of a place to go to in order to practice and understanding that style, this might be the only channel I found that seems to go in this direction. More modern metal music just doesn't do it for me, when it comes to playing the bass guitar (even if I definitely love and listen to an array of more modern bands..even though, not so often anymore))
Greetings from Las Vegas N.V. My first time subscribing to your Phil Soussan channel. I had the opportunity to share the Rock Fantasy Camp 2022 with the great Vinny Appice who was my counselor in that great moment. Plus I was in the VIP at Vamp'd sharing with you. I belong to a band called MetalSlave where Vinny recorded one of our band's songs. Then I continued recording the record production with one of the drums that Vinny Appice has at Hit Tracks Studio Las Vegas. The recording engineer is called Tom. You are a great bassist who is highly respected. "Rainbow in the Dark" one of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you Phil Soussan for allowing me to be a part of you. I wish you much success always with Last in Line Band. You really are incredible. I take this opportunity to invite you to visit my channel, it will be an honor. And one day being able to play a song with you for the channel will be a great honor.👍⭐️🎼🎸🎼⭐️👍🥁👍
Yessss!!! I've been waiting for this. Loved the Shot In The Dark video. Can't wait to see Last In Line in the Uk again soon. Would love to see some bite size beginner tutorial type videos🤘🏻🔥
I absolutely think you are the best rock bassist in the world ..my husband is a dear friend of Fred Saunders who always speaks highly of you....Thank you for the videos Phil
@@PhilSoussanOfficial I absolutely will Phil....He speaks fondly of you my friend...Such a fan of your talent brother...God Bless you and your family and keep playing till the strings fall off ..
Thanks for sharing. You’re playing on the Ultimate Sin album inspired me to play bass and join a band. Doesn’t matter what you play your distinctive rhythm and style is what sets you apart. Again thank you for sharing your insight. I look forward to catching you out on the road live!!🤘😎🤙
Brilliant, Phil. Thank you very much for sharing this song, which is among my favorites of all time. I simultaneously miss Ronnie and am inspired by his continuing legacy of positivity, wonder, and music. I'm happy I got to see him open up for Deep Purple more than 20 years ago. I hope to catch Last In Line on a future tour date as well.
Your "rhythmic element" is what sets you apart! I can totally hear it when you perform it live. Definitely keeps it fresh, while honoring the original version. Thanks for the demonstration! See you next time at the Arcada Theater!
You are the only person who can inspire someone to play bass and discourage them at the same time because you are so gifted I'll never be able to play a fraction as good as you Phil...my question is could you play an entire set with your eyes closed 🔒 if you had to? Thanks 👍 Phil
Hi, Phil - I love your kind words about Jimmy Bain and your friendship. For me, one of his best is his work on "Richie Blackmore's Rainbow", particularly "16th Century Greensleeves". I'm sure you get lots of requests, but I would devour one of your masterclass sessions on that song. Regardless, finding your classes has been inspiring to me. Please stay well and keep 'em coming!
I really enjoyed that. You made me realize several things I could never quantify before. I'm primarily a drummer, and then strings to a lesser extent. The fact that the bass needs to be so slightly behind the impact of the drums on the big hits I'd never heard mentioned before, but makes total sense. I noticed the fingernail pick use which was cool. I'd never heard the term dead notes before, but it brought me back to a time when a bassist I was performing with was not doing the gallop on One Headlight by Wallflowers, and it sounded so wrong to me as a drummer that I straight said: "no gallop we don't play this". The dead notes you added were huge. I rediscovered you after watching you on the food competition, and that was very cool. Looking forward to seeing what you do on this channel. Perhaps you could make some home made recipes on here?
Hey...Phil taught us all how to fix a broken fridge, I'm pretty sure he could whip up some delicious treats for us! I need to build a 4 carboy fermentation chamber (to do up some lager beer this winter)........Phil? 🤔
I would love to see side by side comparisons, but there's probably not a lot of video of Jimmy playing songs (or good quality). You definetly do it justice. Thanks for this.
Question.....I notice you (and many many other bassists) use the A on the fifth fret of the E string instead of the open A string itself. Is that a matter of personal preference or is there more to it than that? Personally I always use the open A string as I find it easier.
Jimmy Bain was Scottish so that really means he has no Roman DNA in his family tree :) This seems to be the best bass cover of the song up even if I think it might have been embellished a little.
It was written in A. We do play it in in the A position, but we are usually tuned down a half step, so in concert pitch reference we would be playing it in Ab. Cheers!
Oh... and yes, Jimmy DID write that keyboard part, supposedly with a drink in one hand and a cigarette the other! ...To me it always sounded a bit like the riff in "Ain't Talking Bout Love" by Van Halen!
@@PhilSoussanOfficialhi Phil. Thank you for your response. Youre right both riffs have similar feeling or intention. Congrats for your channel. Very interesting the way you break down the songs. Kind regards.

did you learn?

...its the least I can do!
Love your videos and yes they are educational. I prefer your way of playing it over the original honestly. Thanks for the lessons.
The right hand technique is amazing and gives it that unique sound.

Great stuff Phil. Cheers!
Such an iconic song. One of my all time favorites.
Just found these tonight, love them - thank you Phil!!!
Enjoyed that. Subscribed.
Phil.......it's ALWAYS a good day when you upload a video for us! Thank you so much. Cheers!
Wow, loved Dio back in the day. Had this cassette. Thanks.
Hi Phil! Nice to see you back with another great breakdown video. Always fun to follow along with you.
Great lesson thank you
Master class is a correct title. Thank you so much for sharing your approach and style. Just an awesome video.
Great!
Thank you so much for theses videos. Pure gold and piece of history. Hail from France !
Je vous en prie!
A golden master piece!! I love rip Jimmy Bain and also Bob Daisley's picking style!!

Thank you Thomas - I will keep them coming! I hear you about that track but if I am not mistaken it was Craig Gruber who played bass on the recording?
Phil, the pick master!
Yesssss!
I’m not a Bass player I’m a drummer but I thoroughly enjoyed this video!!🤘🏻🤘🏻

Haha... haven't tackled that one yet... although I am pretty good at drinking them :-)
Awesome man! Glad you are back! I told you how much I enjoyed your videos when I saw you at Rascals! \m/

Awesome lesson, thanks ! By the way, it would be a good idea to make a video about how you setup your basses. Love that you keep a little buzz !
I have one on my channel - it is called "Check your Setup" and here is the link... ua-cam.com/video/Ss4jECV2iE4/v-deo.htmlsi=kkn3qacTn6_UJhDb

Thank you Phil. Do you play this song in original key live? Do you know if it’s true that jimmy wrote the keyboard arrangement on this?. Kind regards.
