I can't thank you enough Phil for these vids, they have inspired me to pick up the bass again decades later. So different from my teacher when I was much younger.

I love hearing your signature style in the track and your feel versus Jimmy's. Thanks to you both for the decades of inspiration.

These song breakdowns are AMAZING. I love not only to get a deep dive in the trackthemselves, but also ingredients to put together cool rock bass lines in general!

Hi Phil! Your remarks on playing a little tiny behind the beat was really eye-opening! I play in a Ronnie James Dio tribute band and tried to incorporate that when playing these gallop sections like Holy Diver, Egypt and Heaven & Hell. My bandmates felt the difference without me telling them, they unanimously said it sounded ballsier and heavier, they even thought I enhanced the tone or something!

Cool, thanks! It’s awesome - right? Very subtle on its own but HUGE when applied to a band performance!! Good luck to you!

I know it would be proper to play C, D and D sharp on the up end of that lick but Jimmy did it the lazy way and rolled over the D and onto the D sharp without sound out the D. This is why I do it the same way as Jimmy in my video that you will notice is not the same as you play it. I had to listen close and question myself when I learned this because anyone knows Jimmy should have played it the way you did. ua-cam.com/video/b4sQ_jBLCRo/v-deo.html

Got a lot more than I bargained for out of this one. I loved your explanation of playing ahead or behind the beat. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience!

His pick technique is FLAWLESS. Only seen two dominate the pick that way. Him and Bobby Vega.

I would like to - I always get copyright flagged for the Ozzy tracks. Just something that people don't really understand... Once you have a record deal you no longer own any rights to the songs! The record company in question owns them at that point and I have to write to them and get permission - a long process!

I listen to Ronnie's music almost every day. He is still a behemoth in music all these years later. Holy Diver is one of the finest albums ever recorded, from start to finish...it's the one which brought me from merely liking metal (I'd first heard ...And Justice For All at a very young age) and into a complete metal head. I like all sorts of music, but nothing inspires me quite like Dio.

Love this song, fab video for me, I'm only just learning bass so some great tips. I saw Dio on this tour stood right in front of Jimmy, that night he was using a grey Jim Dunlop flexi pick as I caught one. Do you prefer playing with a stiffer pick, or go for similar?
I hope to see you in LiL in the UK sometime. Been too long since I saw you with Robin George at Newcastle poly and on the Ozzy ultimate sin tour. I've been looking at the live version of Showdown by Robin, so a video of that would be cool...
    You Rock Phil, Thanks.

Nothing special or specific... usually into an Ampeg PF20 SVT 20watt head and then into a Two-Notes Captor speaker emulator, but sometimes I might just go through a Tech 21 Richie Kotzen Fly Rig RK5 ...given to me by Richie.
