Again the hd foam produces better results than the ole thin layer of latex glue on glass trimmed and rolled. Two option I humbly suggest. Other pale coloured foam like pale tan. Or a light coating with a blend of natural sharpies, just wipe some of the excess before it fully dries on this can help when the natural is more yellow, green, or brown. This also works for various damsel, dragonfly, and daddy/hopper types
i have always wondered how tiers done the tail section on simular mayflys without buying the tails. thank you so much davie!!!!!! i got an idea from watching this for a hopper pattern.
Hi Davie, The mayflys are swarming in denmark right now and i modified this pattern into a spinner with may fly dun colored foam and wing made from bronze Mallard and a black tackle through it. Forced the wing om top with some bug bond. Tried it yesterday and what an evening...got a beautiful 43 cm brown trout and another on approximately 35 cm and six smaller rainbows. So, thanks for a great pattern and excellent fly ting videos. I had almost given up until i found your videos. Atb, Carsten
I was like that as well Hunter but its like anything in life the more you try it the better the fly becomes it took me a few times to get it too look the way i liked and these are my fav flys to tie as im a dry fly fisher mostly :-) Just keep at it!
Cheers Davie, That version of the deerstalker I have been using is a good attention getter- fish will have it over the natural. Something about it cries out 'take me' to a cruising trout, which is just about all you can ask for in spent gnat fishing. My tyings havent stood up to the teethy. Either my hair is too brittle or I am not protecting it enough, bug bond might sort it. I really see this pattern of yours catching me trout this year, looking forward to tying it. I'll let you know, Cheers.
@DavieMcPhail I've learned more from you watching these fly tying techniques than taking local classes for weeks on end. Thanks for the help. Do you happen to have a recipe for a Yellow Sally? I've not been capable of finding a local tyer who has a good one. Seems to me that its rather subjective as to how this fly is put together. Look forward to your next post!!! Michael
Thanks for a great pattern Davie, around us the spent Gnats have a very distinctive black rib, which is why i go for black thread, what was the foam you used for the body?
Hi Patrick, I've tyed many of these flies over the years for friends in Ireland and they do like using them so I'm glad you liked the fly...I've attached a link to the foam I used for this pattern... All the very best Davie www.veniard.com/product3611/section141/
not to be picky I love your videos but I dont have 3 hands the last time I checked although I can see how another hand would be invaluable tieing flys LOL
Hello Davie I know that here in Sweden there are similar patterns like this but with a bit more "realistic" apperance from J:son-sweden, with special wings also. You're also able to buy special tools and needles from the same place, have you seen theese flies or tools maybe? Or maybe you have met Claes Johansson? Never the less, I love your work and I can't wait to try some of your patterns in Swedish waters! Many thanks from one of your fans in Sweden :)
hello dave on my mayflys i use cafs tail for wing and tail i use round yellow fome the a brown hackle and brown thread i split the fome and tie it the cross pattern like deer hair but dont pull it to tight that it cuts in just tight on ends ill make yah on it yah want i live up in mich good hecks hatch here your friend hank
Hi Davie That is a great looking fly. Were do you get you foam that thick or what is it called? And that is a great trick with the bug bond. Thanks for the Great Videos Chance
Hi Davie, me again on a different laptop which remembers a different time I signed up to youtube, good job a laptop can remember a password because I cant. The body contruction technique is the really impressive bit, I wondered had you thought it up? I will be fishing your pattern on Lough Erne in May, maybe Sheelin too, I will certainly let you know how the fly performs. In the right circumstances I have a notion it will do just fine. It wont tatter like my deer hair bodied flies either.
Hi Mark, Veniards plastazote-block foam is good, just cut with a sharp knife as I've found this the easiest way to get the size I want..I have attached a link below.. All the very best Davie www.sportfish.co.uk/veniards-plastazote-block.html
Davie, This spent gnat is the business, do you think up all these techniques? I have been tying them using white deer hair along the shank. Yes they float, yes the fish will have them but the hair is easily minced by the teeth. This fly is the answer. Thanks so much for sharing this, ingenious tying technique. Is it your own design?
Another Great pattern. I know the largemouth bass and big trout will love this as much as I do. Thank you David.
Un opera d'arte anche questa effimera, bellissime tutte le tue costruzioni... Grazie dei tuoi video
Great fly, Davie. Your videos are the best and youre my best teacher, please keep those videos coming. Thank you!
We're trying to imitate a very large mayfly locally, I'll have to give this extended body technique a try. Thanks again for all your great videos.
Odlicna majska musica,, Hvala sto ste ovo podelili a nama.
Love that pattern thx for sharing Davie

I hope you don't REALLY believe all that Braveheart guff. Wallis was a murdering SHIT of a man. The film was a historical travesty.
