There's no game that allows you to build a shipyard on the border of two warring nations, have it sell to both and, with strong enough shielding, basically have it build a ship for one of the two factions (money up front), get it blown up the second it leaves the dockyard because it's a warzone and then harvest the wreck for raw resources to build more ships to sell. I literally am the world's top arms provider, selling to all factions while using that money to deal with the actual threat of the xenon.

It takes quite a lot of time to get anywhere exciting in the game and it really suffers on repeat playthroughs in my opinion since you are doing the same things again and again it can get rather boring quickly. It's a great game don't get me wrong but I assume a lot of people avoid it since it takes quite a lot of time to get to the meat of the game and that is where you can constantly build big ships and run an economy so you can war it out with a faction

Your happiest day will be when you have the resources to build your first Asgard... pair it up with a squadron of Osaka's and park it at the ring to a Xenon Station (I started in Getsu Fune but then used the squadron to dominate Savage Spur 2 which became my first full sector)... once you have that you start farming K's for scrap metal... its main guns eat them for breakfast and Osaka's can support it for even large invasion fleets for zero loss engagements.
Only downside is that even skilled captains aren't smart enough to efficiently fly Asgards against capital ships (they don't use the main guns for some reason) so you have to keep an eye on them and teleport over to deal with them personally (especially if they send 2 or 3 k's).
I've never been a fan of MMO's so have no idea how X4 stacks up against them... but I don't think they would fare well based on seeing how they try to monetize the hell out of everything. Can't imagine what they'd want you to pay for an Asgard class ship.

two tricks to counter the Xenon. 1) get used to sending ships to help neighbors defend gates against Xenon incursions AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you can afford it, drop some temporary turrets. you need to because without your intervention the Xenon wins through pure persistence. 2) for long term protection, nothing beats a gate base. they are expensive and take a while to build, but it is simply the superior choice for long term protection.
if you are simply playing as you and your ship and not attempting to build up a fleet/company/empire, it is likely that you will be overwhelmed by the Xenon eventually, the non xenon empires simply can't withstand the constant harassment by the Xenon long term without help from the player.

I actually downloaded and started playing this game yesterday because of the Star wars mods, I tried to get into elite dangerous a few times but it always seemed like an insane grind to get going. So far in X4 while its a bit of a grind, being able to assemble (mining) fleets has been insane for me. Steep learning curve but, the fact that my pea brain duct taped 4 medium mining ships to perma export their ores for 70k per ship every few minutes is my greatest accomplishment.
Now the Froot Loops empire desires galactic dominance. If you want LOOPS, you gotta go through ME.

I had problems getting into it, tried and gave up multiple times throughout the years. But a few months ago I stuck with it and now it is indeed my favorite open world space game, pretty much allowing you to do everything, from small scale freelancing to empire management.
A small problem I ran into however, once I learned how to build an empire, my second playthrough (which was supposed to be diffrent) started to feel very similar because I was doing the same meta. Later I realized that this is best played with some sort of limitations on yourself, just because you can do anything, doesn't mean you have to. So now I have one guy building an empire, one guy just being a business man, one guy really playing the pirate game, producing and smuggling illegal drugs and a guy with a small time mercenary company, with just a small fleet, one big freighter and a squadron of fighters, which feels like playing a diffrent game on a diffrent scale, like Battletech for example. That really keeps the game fresh. All I need now is ChatGPT integration for NPC dialogue and Im never going to stop playing this title :)

As a very long time X player, I am happy to see it get credit now. With the latest update 6.+ this is as far as I know the first ever space game to get Carrier groups working correctly with supply fleets. Interceptors will intercept fighters and return for repais if needed, bombers/attackers will do actual attack runs and not just fly to X and sit still shooting, they will go in and out dodging turret fire and return to a supply ship dock if they take damage meaning proper fleet management is fully functional at last.

Except Star Citizen, I played all the competitors ( Elite, No man's sky, Eve online, Starfield, evochron etc...) and no one compare to this piece of art. And, very important, the developers are there , always backing the product, always creating news thing, always improving existing ones. The universe of the game is so "real" that you don't need a multiplayer mode.
The one and only flaw, for me, is the lack of planet management, for exploration and for business. That's it, all the rest is there. Grand game

I wish to someday just see a glimpse of X4.. i started with x3:reunion,played through extensions tc and ap,and just sneak peek into x rebirth..most time spent in x3tc with bunch of mods, vanilla and backstage scripts checkouts. It would be nice if there were possibilities to land on planets or at least have options to extend play to some levels,in example as in x3r driving through stations or asteroids and making missions. I reached point where i was in ancient gate complex (6gates in one huge machinery),which needed immersive amount of resources to make it work,so with script editor i made asteroids inside, made them stations to mine them, and assigned ships to constantly go buy n sell to gate station, also with ships buying from other stations and sell to this one, with 5 assigned Kha'ak destroyers to keep an eye in this same structure for enemy activities...there were good mods back there, and the developers made a good game to be able to make it all happen. Hail to Egosoft

The reason X4 isn't as popular and niche is because it's not for everyone. When people think of a spacesim they usually imagine controlling a starship, flying around a galaxy and engaging in exploration. Something Elite: Dangerous gets a lot more traction. X4 is almost like ... a 4X (no pun intended). It's about scale. It's about *empire building*. It has a lot of strategy elements in it. Not everyone is interested in space station building and fleet management. The similar game comes to mind (which is also claimed to be the best space sim by a lot of people) - Star Sector. And guess what, Star Sector is also a very niche games. These games do very well what they advertise, which is fleet and empire building. But majority of players are more interested in immersing themselves in the world by piloting their one ship, feeling alone in the cosmos and exploring the unknown. That's what propelled space sim genre to become a thing.

    • @accretionist1
      @accretionist1 Рік тому +1

@@gjdriessen1 It's hard to tell, there's no game that could fill that void as of now. Elite Dangerous did for some time but judging from their current situation it's not in a good state. Eventually, Star Citizen could be good but that's not even a game yet, I'd wait. There's No Man's Sky but if you don't enjoy the aesthetic it has you might not like it. If you can get behind a looter-shooter in space, I'd suggest you try Everspace 2 (you character IS the spaceship in that game. It's a different take on it, certainly more arcady and more shooter-like. Nothing like Elite dangerous would provide, for example). There are some interesting developments in the future. Starfield could be a good game, but judging from the Bethesda's trouble history I wouldn't get too excited about it either. Another interesting game is developed by one person is called SpaceBourne 2. But as it stands currently there's no golden middle for a game like that... there's always going to be a place for a good sandbox spacesim where you just get to pilot your own starship and just be a bounty hunter, or do some quests. All of them currently seem flawed or offer a different experience. If only we could get a game like Space Rangers except with 3d graphics. that'd be very cool

However, station building is a lot like lego/sticklebricks and isn't as difficult as you think it is. No, the real problem is if you can't throw away 20 hours of game, 20 real wall time hours, as just a learning exercise, a learning that can put 100 hours in to get to mid game or still learning late game. If you can't afford it, then like, say, Fortnite, you can't afford the time it takes from your life, you have other things to do and only one life to do it in.

+improved controls and UI over previous games

+long playtime, lots of things to do
    +story
    +GOG or Steam release, no account/online only/copy protection bulls**t (6:04)
+modern Vulkan 3D graphic API (probably needed for performance reasons)
-music is meh (some does not fit very well and is to generic)
-generic universe look (previous X-series games had much cooler sector graphics / skybox)
-stations / landing zones feel generic, cold and lifeless
-savefiles are compressed XML - an ineffective String-format - flexible, cheap & fast to develop with, but results in slooow long save/load times & large save files for the enduser
    --AI is dumb
--performance is bad even on high end PCs you will drop below 60fps, no CPU right now is fast enough to handle a big complex late game universe with smooth framerate
---Still buggy, expected better for a 6.00 version, had teleporting 'Xenon I' ships multiple times, placing Laser towers near a factions station to defend it from enemies made it hostile because they (apparently accidentally!?) hit the station
Played all previous games. So far had the most fun with X2 The Thread. But that's simple to outdated for todays - only 4:3 aspect ratio support.

One thing you didn't seem to mention that I think plays a big role is replayability. The game has some degree of random generation, "seeds" for every new game if you like to call them that. Which makes every new game, even if you have already experienced all the plots and so on, a different experience and a challenge. Let me give you example of two campaigns I've had in the last 2 months of playing:
Campaign 1: In this campaign I almost immediately had the xenon (AI murder machine "race") launch an incursion on one of the central systems in the galaxy. Now, that system is always a hot spot to some degree but it was bad this time around. REALLY BAD. How bad exactly? Well... Xenon constructed a defence station and a SHIPYARD right next to the jump gates to those systems, they literally blockaded the ENTIRE trade of the commonwealth factions before I could do anything about it. Result? Material shortages everywhere, factions unable to produce ships fast enough to defend themselves against xenon and losing ground everywhere, northern Split provinces almost getting wiped out entirely. So, what do I do? I decided to migrate to Terran Territory and cozy up to them. Terrans have their own in-house economy so they were unaffected. I decided to use this and essentially started to build my station in their space, with an aim to massively bolster their economy and, eventually, be able to produce my own ships. How did this campaign end? Terrans Protectorate became the very saviors and protectors they believed themselves to be, they had a MASSIVE military force and went to war with xenon everywhere they could, thanks to my own stations propping up their economy massively. I kept everybody alive by selling them my own ships, becoming a billionaire in the process. It was a story of how one Teladi's greed and endless pursuits of profit literally saved the whole galaxy from evil AI overlords.
Campaign 2: Xenon caused problems in the same system, but they were the usual ones and the economy overall held okay. It was pretty uneventful to be honest, no major happenings until I spotted a curiosity about 20-ish hours into my game. I spotted an Asgard with about half it's hitpoints flying through Argon space. Huh, now you don't see that every day, earlier I spotted a Terran fleet hanging around that system I mentioned earlier (HAT choice I for anybody wondering), not sure why they were there but they are probably the reason why the economy did not collapse, I saw a couple of Xenon destroyers when I was flying by so I assume it was literally a lone Asgard trying to return to it's own space. Now for those who do not know, Asgard is literally one of the most powerful ships in the game, it's a siege Battleship that can take on a whole fleet on it's own and melt stations on it's own. And some of you probably know where I am going with this: a Terran ship flying through Argon space, Argon's don't like Terrans to put it mildly, so I immediately decided on a crazy plan to board this thing. It took me two whole hours of constantly blowing up it's engines and nibbling at the shield (I literally bought new ships on the fly just so I could actually do it) and a razor thin boarding mission but I GOT IT. I had a fully equipped Asgard about 20 hours into the game. Now, a smart choice is to sail it to a shipyard, sell the equipment and then the hull itself for so much money that it will give you a huge headstart into your own station economy. But that's too boring, what I decided to do instead is to fly to Argons with my brand new Terran Battleship and tell them I will do any of their Xenon missions if they pay me well. So I took literally every single war mission that involved destroying xenon stations and off I went! With just that one Asgard I managed to clear basically all the xenon in the top regions and completely neuter them. In the process I made enough money to buy myself a carrier with a squadron of fighter bombers, and 2 destroyers to help with the station bombardment. With no player economy at all. I wonder how surprised Yaki will be once I finally roll into their system and free them from their plight without even being asked to do so by our boy Dal Busta.
This is why this game is so amazing. It's a sandbox that gives you so many tools to play with and so many variables that the possibilities for interesting games are practically endless.

You can't just gloss over the fact that ED and SC have persistent online worlds and X4 is single player. Being single player makes it insanely easier to implement more complex gameplay systems. It's not a coincidence that ED lacks this and SC is trying but is taking 20 years to make lol. Plus, there's still nothing that even comes close to the actual space flight and ship "feel" in ED - I've always looked at ED as primarily a space *flight* simulator and it's still the absolute best at that, I don't even think there's another game that I would consider a valid competitor in that regard and I absolutely love it's modular equipment system for it's ships. And calling Eve online, although it holds a special place in my heart, a space sim is kind of a joke, you literally click to move your ship. Don't get me wrong, I love all of these games except for SC because I refuse to play it until it's in somewhat of a finished state, and I agree with your sentiment as far as how awesome X4 is in it's own right but I think all the comparisons or trashing one game vs. another is just unfair. I love 'em all for their strengths and don't mind any of their weaknesses, except for how shallow ED becomes after you really get deeper into it. It is a shame really that ED doesn't have more variety of time consuming shit to do in it and a more complex economy. I really wish a game that was Eve but with ED's ship and spaceflight systems existed, I'd never stop playing it.

SC and ED fan here: X4 is an *excellent* game from what I've seen, haven't played it myself, as I already have either SC, ED to scratch most of those space-y urges. Though it won't appeal to all of the SC or ED fanbase, it'll appeal to a lot of them.
The biggest draw SC that it's explicitly *multiplayer*. The people that love it, love it for that reason in particular most of the time. It'd take an X-series MMO with ground/FPS combat and planetary landing to really fill SC's niche completely
Elite... Elite has a vibe to it, mostly. And a VR mode, but I believe at least one of the X-series does as well, but I don't know about X4. That and just sheer *scale*.
If neither of the above appeals to you, know, X4's a great alternative!

It's just like with all those complex grand strategy games, it's just too overwhelming for majority of the players so they just quit. But just like with those games too, if you manage to actually devote the time and energy required to properly learn and understand the game, there is no other game like this. the scale of the gameplay is what sets the game apart in my mind. you play and play and play you work your way up to better ships. you finally manage to get a ship which actually needs multiple crew members in order to function correctly, and you are feeling like a king. about that time the scale of the game really starts to hit home. you've done all this playing, struggling to be able to purchase such a fine ship, and you haven't even really begun the game yet. the game doesn't TRULY start until you build your first station, and have trading/mining ships earning you money passively. then you build a second station, then a third, etc... NOW you're in the game, and it just keeps opening up bigger and bigger. eventually you will build the capability of manufacturing your own ships, became a major economic force in the universe, then an Empire taking control of entire Sectors. X4 is one of those games that will just chew up vast amounts of time. you aren't going to be doing all this in short amount of time. building an Empire takes planning, smarts, logistical awareness, strategic competence, and most of all patience, lots and lots of patience.

I love this game to death, put like 400 hours into it the first 3 weeks I got it (yeah.. I know..) but in the interest of fairness it has to be said that the game is so fucking buggy, and I mean littered with bugs, that it can frustrate the shit out of you. Since KE 6.0 launched, literally all my ships are fusing together and spiral uncontrollably whenever I move in system it's so annoying I actually stopped playing until they fix it.

Ive been playing X4 since 2020 and OMG i love it! Ive played Starfield and Elite Dangerous but none of them really felt "alive" just bland and empty- sure its new and has cool graphics and what not but it never had much life or content to do- it was so repetitive. . . But with X4 there is LIFE, your choices ACTUALLY mater- You are literally in CONTROL rather than following what the game tells you- you have to go out and physically build from the ground up. In ED you can only do do much((mine, trade and fight)). X4: Build an empire to set your mark in the galaxy, Build a fleet of ships to help defend or to conquer your enemies and defend your allies. MINE, you have to go out and mine resources to build said fleets and stations- Finance your stations and help fund them for the work you want done. . And so mucb more. The game is probably one of the most immersive space RTX/sandbox sim ive ever played and A BONUS its FIRST PERSON! Its honestly amazing... I hope it blows up with players one day :)

My only real problem with X4 (but its a big one) is that planets dont exist in the game except as pretty pictures in your skybox, you cant land on them, you cant orbit them, you cant interact with them in any meaningful way. Sorry but planets not existing is pretty much unforgivable in a modern space game. Other than that the game is awesome.

@@Nyxson That's what I meant by saying "in any meaningful way" I really dont consider the terraforming to be meaningful planetary interaction. The planets are actually 3D objects, you "can" get closer to them, if you have a very fast ship, point it at the planet, and let it fly for many many hours. Get too close and you will spontaneously and unceremoniously explode though, you can't land on them.

I’ve wanted this game for a long while but the one thing that has held me back is the lack of the “first person shooter bs”. I get it, people who play sims look down on FPS games, but I want to manage a space empire while ALSO boarding enemy ships and fighting with a plasma rifle in my hands. Without that I just get bored with the grind a bit. That’s like playing Mount and Blade but you don’t get to fight in any battles. It would be fun for a while but then get old quickly for me.

X is THE premier space-sim series. There are no others like it. I played X3 TC and AP avidly, waited for the bugs to get sorted in X4, and it's an amazing addition.
Noobs: All you need is to work up to 1mil credits, buy an M class trade ship (Mercury Vanguard ftw), and start earning passive income.
But yes, you can build space station production facilities, assign dozens of mining and trading ships to each station, send patrol fleets anywhere, dock fighter squads on your carriers, step into one of your fighters and take off, board and capture enemy ships, build shipyards... it does everything except planetary and fps combat.

I never got into it because it seems so complex and the learning curve seems insane, but you know what? *FUCK IT, I'M IN.*

I have purchased the complete DLC game addons and feel like I've barely scratched the surface with my play throughs. There really is something for everyone, including the ability (with skill and a lot of luck) to hijack hostile ships after they've destroyed yours, okay I did that just the once but it was hilarious the other times I was vacuumed paste very quickly.
The lack of planets does nothing to detract from the rest of the content. In fact it would only serve as a distraction from the beauty that is space itself.
Pinging and hunting down secured lock boxes is possibly the most fun you can have outside of a mission or personal empire building. You may always choose to build up the infrastructure for other empire(s) instead of creating your own.
There are options and I don't think Egosoft are completely done with it as yet.
The fact it's single player, off line and ready to go is the most appealing. The downside is the AI. And the flight model to some extent. It's similar to Elite Dangerous but it's weird. I can't explain it sorry.
My best playthrough has been as a pirate (go figure!) other times I've left bereft, broke and aimless. I haven't tried a lot of the starting stages but all of the content you buy is available to experience you just may not get the initial introduction and setting, which is fair enough.
I've also spent money on Star Citizen & ED Odyssey. X4 represents the greatest value so far, even if I have clocked more hours in Elite Dangerous those hours were mostly wasted with the grind.
X4 is fairly easy to mod/cheat too which I would urge you to try for yourself AFTER you've put a fair amount of time in to the base game. It's useful to do when starting a free roam for a unique experience.
    Have fun.

X4 is a single-player game in a world where gamers use their gaming time as their social time. Games like these need to be multiplayer, where someone in a player's group can host a server or an all-out MMO. The best space games are those that are multiplayer with the ability to play solo for those that wish to but can still chat with their player friends in the game. With technology the way it is going and people's social life, for the most part, shifting to online friends, it's in the best interest of game developers to keep that in mind.

I think some of the control choices they made are a little unorthidox but so what? The real thing is that there is a large segment of gamers who arent interested in complexity and depth and they stick to games that cater to the lowest denominator, if you get my drift. I would wager that fans of the x series are also fans of paradox GS games and other ultra deep games like space engineers ect. Idk maybe its a matter of not having the paitence to sit down and suck at something for a little bit untill you figure it out. Anyway, great work. I look forward to more content

More than a space game, it is a space war simulation where obtaining resources and managing them is crucial to survival. Yes, you can do as you said just buy some ships and sail around trading or mining, but after 20 to 200 hours of play things get complicated that if you didn't have a strategy to create an empire and defend it you don't survive the AI that it invades all races and is modifying the economy in such a way that it is not even worth running away.

And yes, X4 needs to be promoted a lot more. I played X games before, so I kinda knew what to expect, but many newcomers see the graphics and are immediately put off because it _is_ pretty outdated. But given what X4 offers you, from mission running on your own to owning stations, fleets and empires, that's really just a minor thing. You can command and control everything you own in this game. Got a fetch quest? delegate it to an npc pilot fetching and delivering the stuff for you while you do something else... Build a factory and have your minions supply it with resources and sell your stuff automatically... Things like that. X4 is a simulation on an epic scale, from EVA to space empire.

Egosoft's "X" series of games have gone from good (X2 in 1999.), to really, really good with the release of "X4" in October 2018.
There isn't a game I know where the sheer variety of ships that the player can actually fly is so huge.
From a small scout with just the pilot and maybe a co-pilot to the massive battleships with hundreds of people on board and enough firepower to almost take out a whole system. And if you add to this the fantastic modding community and the ships they can provide, then the list of flyable ships becomes enormous.
And if you don't want to follow the story, then don't. You start with a small fighter, maybe you have a cargo ship too, and then it's totally up to you what and where you want to goto.
I've got well over 500 hours into X4, but I've done the whole series so I dread to think the amount of days I've put into it and the times I've restarted these games just to see what would happen if I tried it a different way.
And don't get me started on building stations. Anything and everything is possible to build and if you've got the talent, which I certainly do not have, then you can build stations that can leave you in awe of their design.
