    Pace notation also depends on the driver/co-driver. Some use angle or speed-based turns, others judge them by how easy or hard is it to turn, etc.

      Exactly as some may say easy left, i like to say/hear flat left. (Depending on curve tho could be a left5 too)

      Some put small cut where every other puts don't

    This is why we love rallies! Pure driving on an unpredictable track, but you put all your confidence to your best friend: your codriver!

    A glimpse of the co-driver's shorthand was interesting. Pace noting truly is a personal language.

    That's so cool! I predominantly like to use 1-6 (most severe - least severe) but I recently discovered I really enjoy the old descriptive notes too that was used during Group 4 and Group B (easy, fast, medium, k, square, hairpin). I really like Hayden Paddon's style for its ability to remain consistent since he uses tape on the steering wheel with one strip in the middle on the dash and whatever the tape on the wheel says when it matches up with the dash strip, that becomes the note for that corner.
    Then of course you have the system used by a lot of Welsh and Irish drivers that's the exact opposite of the one I first learned - the 1 is the least severe and 6/7/etc is the most severe. Really really cool :D

      Do you mind elaborating on the Gr. 4 and Gr. B systems, please?

    This is what the sport need, like F1, more technical stuff about the cars, strategies and like here, co-drivers.

    So does the co driver get to walk or drive the course to make those notes

    • @revenger210
      @revenger210 Рік тому +15

      this usually happens during recce, or reconnaissance drive. The driver and co-driver go through the stage at civilian road speeds, and the driver calls out the notes according to his estimates of how he'd like to tackle the road, and the co-driver jots them down. They also have cameras in the car, so the co-driver can later go through the footage of the road they've driven and make adjustments to the notes the driver put out

    Guys. That's why Ogier is 8x champion. When every sane driver, even WRC (listen to the onboard afterwards) would put "don't cut" he puts "small cut just"

    The thing I d love to know is how some drivers adjust their note system over the years and how it affected their performance. Edit: Also I ve got to say, this video is very well done.

    A good copilot is everything at high speeds.

  • @mikegan73

    I don't know how the drivers are able to compute the information so quickly and react with the speed they are going at. I don't think I could do it. Aren't they still mainly relying on there skills, experience and good instincts rather than the co drivers information?

      The pacenotes are important because there are dangers the driver can’t see until it is too late (like the rock in the video.) Also, drivers can’t see if the corner is going to tighten or open, and can be mislead into carrying too much or too little speed unless there is a pacenote telling them. Also a driver sometimes need to know in advance what line to take through a series of corners in quick succession, but usually can’t see past the next corner.
