- Many beginner ropers don't have an expensive dummy to practice on. Here is an option that every great heeler in the world has used. When it comes to ground practice, a sawhorse is the perfect way for us all to get started or to tune up on. And best thing about it, it's cheap!

this is the root of learning to heel... positioning,delivering,body posture,angles...all can be learned here, correctly.. timing will come later.... great video!!
This is a God send to me! I train horses and have always wanted to go into the roping competitions since my Mom gave it up to have me.. It's cheap, simple and I'm about to go set it up now!

Thanks man I appreciate all of your comments!! So I'm curious why you don't like this style roping on the saw horse let me know. I learned all this stuff from clay O'Brien Cooper and Allen Bach when I lived there so I'm just curious what your thoughts are

sunglasses will do ya more good than the sawhorse being used this way, only thing you've posted that i haven't agreed with, but hey, i still love ya man!!!
i understand that. i never roped off a bucket or any other fixed position. i like to be moving to my target... but even roping a saw horse.. i like to be able to adjust to any position... every run can be different.. waiting two jumps to line one out, can take you out the money...

and i promise i aint knockin ya or wanting to argue, i think its great what ur trying to accomplish with the gopro. im like you, dont anyone to wonder why they are having trouble. bad habits are easier to create than good uns! -)

Think about it like this...A bucket is a little too small first off, but your horse should be rated at all times. This makes heeling more like roping a saw horse than a moving target. Low numbered guys argue this because their horses are never in the right spot so they have to constantly be changing their targets. If you spent 20 days working on getting your heel horse in to the same position you rope the dummy, you would rope better. Then do the same thing on the ground. Happy Newyear
I've been trying to practice on a Super Slider and I can honestly say it's getting me nowhere, the body is too short and I always hit the right wheel, takes a lot of my confidence away with all the missing
great video, when i rope the saw horse i stand on a 5 gallon bucket and rope. is that a good thing? i think it is because the angles are closer to what they are on a horse plus you have to ballance. whats your opinion?
it creates the habit of leaning and sweeping. right shoulder in front of left does 2 things. it makes for improper angle on delivery and its just plain bad horsemanship, gets em to moving away. now as far as the guys you learned this from there is no argument, but a young roper starting out needs to create good habits, and this way has possibility to instill more harm than good for a novice. you pros can get away with it, but us ole weekenders need it done correctly.

I have a head dummy but want something to put it on so I can practice heading and heeling any options
Thanks a ton for all the vids. I am a roughstock guy that is now getting into roping with my age and injuries. I want to heel but have no roping experience. Would it be better to learn to head and actually catch a steer first before learning to heel?
In case you r still wondering, most people learn to head first them learn to heel. You don’t have to learn both but you should

I'd say a smaller diameter rope, in soft or X-soft. Classic Spyder is excellent, it's what I rope with. Fastback/rattler GT4 is another good one, although the GT4 is slightly larger in diameter. hope this helps

Dru, I am a beginner roper and practice on a sawhorse. During practice, should my objective be to rope the two 'legs' or 'throw a perfect trap where the tip comes all the way around?" Thank you for the videos and tips. They have helped quite a bit.

i never liked roping from a fixed position... i like to move around when i'm roping a dummy... just like you would be on a horse...
