The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

"Scarlet Ribbons'" was composed by my late great aunt, Evelyn Danzig Levine, who was good friends with Harry. The song was written in my aunt's living room in Port Washington, Long Island with lyricist Jack Segal.
Oh wow! Thanks for the info! Kudos to Aunt Evelyn!
Love this song, it's choking me up right now. My mother played her Martin guitar and sang it to me when I was very tiny. We had lots of Belafonte albums in our home as well. I had the honor of meeting him at Rider University where my nephew had invited him to be a guest speaker. I had a chance at age 65 to tell him how much I appreciated his music, acting, civil rights activism. Even got to have a bite to eat with him. A beautiful memory for me. Thank you for this beautiful piece of music and letting us know of it's history and connection to you..
Beautiful song
That is amazing, thank you for sharing this story. I always love listening to Belafonte, such a beautiful voice.
Your great aunt was very talented; it's a very beautiful song. And so heartfelt and thoughtful.
Classically beautiful melody, not unlike some of the art songs of Mendelssohn and Schubert.
"If I lived to be a hundred..." You were almost there. Rest in peace, you incredible legend. Thank you for all the joy that you spread in the world with your music. I will never stop being grateful for the gifts you shared with us.
RIP Harry thank you for sharing your beautiful voice and spirit with us, your music lives on,
🤭😂 That made me laugh but yes, he was beautiful and talented in many ways,
This was played at my Mums funeral, such a beautiful song.
RIP Harry Belafonte ❤️
I was a little kid when I first saw him on tv. He was very young, and I thought he must have been the most beautiful man in the world.
First time I heard this I was eight and I burst into tears.
66 now and I still do
My mother sang this to me as a lullaby for years, and even to this day it never fails to get me teary-eyed. Thank you, Mr. Belafonte. Rest in peace, your legacy is forever etched upon my life!!
I sang this song when I was very young. I dreamed I too would have scarlet ribbons when I awoke. Oh this song brings back memories I didn't know were still there
others have sung this song but him singing this song gives you that feeling that others do not.
The first time I heard this song was in the subway in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. A street performer i used to see occasionally was singing it and playing on his guitar. I hadn't heard Harry Belafonte's original. But this man's voice was so clean and beautiful i wasn't the least bit surprised when I finally learned where it came from. Mr. Belafonte was clearly an inspiration to this fellow. I bought his tape and often sang it to my daughter as a baby.
This is the recording I remember from my teens. Harry Belafonte could always move me to tears with his voice, so beautiful and emotional filled with a passion that very few singers convey.
Smiles, how are you doing?
My father tucked us in and sang this song. He also had a beautiful voice..treasured memory
My father and I danced to this song at my wedding.
How special xx
RIP, you great man!
My father Lloyd Cumberbatch sang this song to me as a child in Trinidad 🇹🇹
R.i.P daddy love❤you
My stepfather had this song on a 78, I played and played it as a child.
My mother sang this to me as a child, and played her Martin guitar along with it. Brings tears to my eyes.
My mom sang it to me, too.
That song sung by that man is nothing less than sublime. Divine. xoxo
RIP Harry. What a beautiful man. ❤
Same here Patricia, how are you doing?
Brought me to tears the first time I heard Harry sing this lovely song. Has the same effect 60 years later! So sad to hear of the passing of this outstanding singer and man!
Grandad used to sing this to me in the early '90s.
My mom loved him. I was so glad she got to see him not long before she died.
My grandma used to sing this as a lullaby to me and my siblings whenever we spent the weekend with her and our granddad
2024 and still others have sung this song but him singing this song gives you that feeling that others do not.
My late dad used to sing this to me when I was a little girl 😢
He was the best 😊
Ich liebe dieses wundervolle Lied. Es rührt mich zu Tränen. Danke an Harry Belafonte.

RIP beautiful man.
Same here Sandra, how are you doing?
Awesome
My dad loved this song.. he also loved the song " The Prisoners Song" by Hank Snow...?
What an incredible singer 🥺. Does anyone happen to know how these performances were mic'd up? I don't see anything on his shirt or ear. Was the mic above? How could it capture such a clean sound while being so far away??
My guess would be he's miming.
@ aint no way! I don’t want to believe that
@mreis221
In 1964, there was no such thing as shirt mics.
There would only have been a very visible mic stand.
So I'm 100% certain it's mimed because that's what they had to do back then.
I'm 61 and grew up watching Top of the Pops.
Almost every performance was mimed because the sound wasn't good enough for live performances on TV.
You can always hear the difference.
Bien
I had this record as a single but it wasn't a 45 it was a 78 I think I know most people know about 45 and 33 for albums but they use to have 78 speed for records too
Absolutely, how are you doing Pam?
@@Gerardnolan191 I miss the old days my grandkids always had a hard time understanding the different varieties of music that I like dad born in 1907 mom 1918 sister Jeannette born in 37 brothers 48 and 47 another sister 50 and me in 58 I remember the first time Flintstones came on TV they hardly comprehend this
@@pamczech5984 smiles, where are you from?
@@Gerardnolan191 Indiana my family is from Chicago dad's family was refugees from Poland and my mom's family came over during cival war from Scotland and Norway

This is the only song that even brings me close to believing in a god
He is real. Of that I have no doubt. I pray you seek Him and find Him.
Great rendition, but I remember Jim Ed Brown & his sister's signing this song.
Smiles, how are you doing Carolyn?
The Cats version is also very beautifull
This version I can understand the other not
謹んでお悔やみ申し上げます…
He looks like I’d imagine Christ did
Sooooooo the wife looked in the drawer and found them? Doesn’t this happen in every relationship 💁🏻♂️
A lower key from the original 1956 recording. He must have already been wrecking his voice by the time of this performance.
Or he was preserving his voice. I have no idea why y'all hold vocalist to these impossible standards.
AS I WAS LISTENING TO THIS THE THOUGHT CAME ALMOST IMMEDIATELY TO MY MIND THAT HIS VOICE NEVER SOUNDED MORE BEAUTIFUL, BECAUSE HE WAS SINGING IN A LOWER KEY.
AND YOU TIED IN A NEGATIVE "WRECKING HIS VOICE" THEORY TO THIS?😬😫🙄
