I was slightly unsure if to give this video a like or not. On one hand you are spreading some basic knowledge about this underappreciated part of history and it's clear that there was passion and effort put into making this video, on the other hand there are some omissions, oversimplifications and mistakes. Like: not mentioning that the mother of Sigismund III was a Polish princess (which was a major factor in his election) or implying that St Petersburg already existed (it was founded in 1703, on a freshly conquered territory), etc.
If you want to get deeper into this topic I recommend videos made about it by the channel SandRhoman History and (even more) the book "The Northern Wars: War, State and Society in Northeastern Europe, 1558-1721" by Robert I. Frost.
Frost is also the author of the Oxford History of Poland-Lithuania, which currently has only the volume 1, ending in 1569 with the very formation of the Commonwealth (the Union of Lublin). Hopefully he'll finish the second volume soon (he's been writing it for nearly a decade now).
You can also find some lectures and other videos with Frost here on UA-cam.

It wasn't the Swedes that staged the bloodbath in 1520. The Danes held a banquet in Stockholm and invited noblemen and civilians, after which they incarcerated them and executed them on Stortorget the following day. Gustav Vasa's father was executed during the bloodbath.

Not quite united, but they created personal union indeed. Unfortunely the Swedes overthrew the king, despite he was Swedish, not Polish -_- Such a pity, because the Swedes had good infantry (after Gustavus Adolphus' reforms even excelent) and Poles had, as you arguably know, excelent cavalry. The P-L Commonwealth always lacked infantry and it was a big problem. Polish cavalry combined with Swedish infantry would be unstopable force that would defeat Russia and change the history of the world.

The main reason Sigismund became king of Poland-Lithuania was that his mother was the last member of the Jagelonican royal family (who had ruled the commonwealth for 200 years) to produce a son. His aunt the dowager queen Anna Jagellonia secured his election. Sigismund's grandfather had sought marry his daughters to the Vasas to check Russia. the erractic Erik prevaricated and eventually his brother Johan wen't to Poland and married Catherine. Again, since Catherine's brother was the last Jagellonican king, Catherine was a great price, Ivan the terrible also sought to marry her to advance his design on commonwealth lands And he and Johan ruling Finland ended up in a highly abusive correspondance eventually leading to war. Erik the king, got highly suspicious of his brother's powerful alliances and independent rule and invaded his fiefs and captured Johan in 1563. Catherine refused to leave his side and Sigismund was born three years into their captivity. Erik meanwhile fought a hard war with Denmark becoming less and less popular increasing his erratic rule, ending with his marriage to commoner, something that the nobility found intolerable and they rebelled putting Johan and Catherine on the throne. Sigismund was raised catholic but spent his childhood as a swedish prince regarding the Swedish crown as his his birthright.

The Kalmar union was a personal union much like Sigismund's rule of Sweden and commonwealth not an "empire". It was never one nation, or Sweden being ruled by Denmark. They were different nations with different laws and government just sharing the same monarch. Moreover Swedish kings were on several occasions crowned during the "Kalmar union" Karl Bonde even three times. The lesser Swedish nobility preferred a distant Danish king as check on the high nobility so they wouldn't be bossed around.

4:21 The Szlachta was also like 20-30% of the population due to it being basically impossible to lose noble status, which also lead to corruption because magnates. Super rich nobles would pay off the nobles-in-name only to vote like they demanded. The PLC democracied so hard the King didn't even have authority to mount a defense against foreign invassion without nobility agreeing to it.
4:33 another reason it failed. A large portion of the PLC population had 0 desire to fight for the nation.

@@henrygooglekonto-lm4rn I meant that Poland and Sweden should remain separate states because they are as different as chalk and cheese and have their own destinies to fulfil. Close trade, friendship and military alliances are sufficient.
Also, historically the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth nobility were not interested in Sigismund Vasa's union with Sweden. When Sigismund sent troops to invade Sweden in 1597, not mentioned in the above video, he had to pay for the Polish, and the German and Hungarian mercenaries, out of his own pocket because the nobles were not interested. These troops, joined by Swedes loyal to Sigismund, had the Swedish Protestant forces cornered. Amazingly, Sigismund told them to pull back and let them go because he did not want to kill his subjects and the rest is history as Adolfus took the helm. Electing this half-Swedish and Polish prince as Poland's king and Grand Duke of Lithuania was a massive mistake. It matches that of a Polish Duke who invited the Teutonic Knights into Baltic Prussia. And, don't get me started on how he stuffed up incorporating into the Commonwealth the Duchy of Muscovy after taking it in 1610.

This is the result of classic, 19th and 20th century historiography. It's much Lithuanians' and Belarusians' fault. Lithuanians and Belarusians didn't claim the P-L Commonwealth heritage, so Poles took all of it. Lithuanians considered the Union of Lublin the greatest disaster in their history. Disowned king Władysław Jagiełło and cherished grand duke Witold. Belarusians instead chose to name their country Belarus instead of some Upper Lithuania of something.
This is slowly changing in Poland. More and more people realize that the P-L Commonwealth =/= Poland.

@polishdane you got the Stockholm blood bath wrong! Do your your research bro before educating the public. As I have learnt about it here in Sweden it was no rebellion but rather the Danes gathering all the leading Swedish nobles for a feast turned into a massacre. The Swedes had prior to this complained at all the Danes and Germans being placed in administrative positions rather than native Swedes. Gustav Wasas father, great grandfather of Szigismund, was killed there and and his son was motivated to start the rebellion, before then basically unplanned. Interestingly, the war was won by Sweden because Lubeck rented out some warships. Also the weakened state of the noble class after this helped bring in the Swedish "imperial" era because it made centralising the country easier whilst the nobles were eager to do state and military service to bring in much needed cash and prestige.

There was no mention of the Battle of Kircholm (1605) where the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth took Livonia (Estonia) from the Swedes. Electing Sigismund Vasa as king of Poland was another big mistake.
