  • "Never turn your back on the things that bother you in this world." With this prophetic philosophy, the Filipino Illac Diaz, ex-student from Harvard and MIT Tech gave light to a brilliant idea. With a reused plastic bottle and a little less than 2 liters of water, his invention called the Liter of Light has brought light to a million people, illuminated those places that are doomed to darkness even in the light of day. The lamp has a potential equal to 55 watts, zero electricity cost and lasts for 5 years. Genius simplicity that made Diaz recognized as a global leader by the World Economic Forum.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The light is great, but blaming a gigantic slum circle around a gigantic modern city that has its own underclass and crumbling infrastructure and ongoing flooding risks on "ongoing or cyclical global warming" makes no sense unless its happening everywhere, not just in the usual flood and storm surge and hurricane risk areas.
All of his local self sufficiancy ideas are great, its just his focus on international PC that wastes time. Along with everything else, slum populations should be moved up or otherwise out of the flood plain, and the city must start relocating in other cities or a new Rio higher up, since they cant build Holland-like gigantic sea gates.
