    • @mikemartin5749

Agreed. This is primarily the pitcher's fault. Hundreds of times I've seen Little Leaguers make split second decisions to throw or not throw the ball based on where other players are located. A pitcher fielding a grounder runs to first himself if no one is covering. A cutoff man either throws to home or not depending on where the runners are, and if the catcher or anyone is covering home.

For a right handed batter, the pitcher fields the bunt to the right side. The first baseman stays at first. The second baseman did exactly what he was supposed to do, go to second. The third baseman shoes to third in case there is a play. Instead, the first baseman rushed to the ball with the pitcher, that was the mistake. Of course, the pitcher could have just held on to the ball, extending the game. I think we are so used to seeing major leaguers play this just right it’s strange when this happens.

@Antonelli Baseball Just some food for thought: As a Little League coach, I felt that the field is small enough for the Pitcher, Catcher and 3B to cover a bunt. I always kept my 1B at his position to handle the throw. Often times, the 2B on a Little League team is the shortest kid on the team, so keeping my tall, experienced 1B at home was a smart thing to do. What do you think?

  • @craighembree3101
    @craighembree3101 17 днів тому +15

On the 60 ft diamond, you don’t usually see both 1B and 3B crashing. The infield is small and the pitchers are generally athletic. So you usually have a RHP cover bunts to the first base side and the third baseman crash. The opposite, if you’ve got a LHP.
I think that’s what happened here. Third baseman crashed aggressively, pitcher fielded as if there was no doubt whose play it was. I think the first baseman was supposed to stay home but got confused and came in late.

The home plate umpire definitely helped the Florida team in the 6th inning. Made a bad hbp call. The batter clearly was standing over the plate and definitely did not try to get out of the way of the pitch, which should have been called a strike. fantastic text book bunt. the 1B, after he turned to look at 1B, immediately noticed the 2B was not covering. I am guessing the P could not get a clear look as he was directly behind the runner, but had less than a split second to decide to throw it or not. I have been in the 1B situation before (I am sure most have), you see the play, you are so hyped to make a play, but it goes out of your hands and then you see something and you know it can go south very quick and all you can do is watch the train wreck unfold in slow motion.

Two things. I've coached Little League since I was in my 20s and I'm now in my 50s. If Taiwan was a team I coached, it would have been the 1st baseman that made the error. To keep things simple for 12 and under kids, we run the same play regardless of the situation. 3rd base, pitcher, and catcher (unless there is a play at home) crash on the ball. 1st base stays home, 2nd base goes to second, short stop covers third and all outfielders come in to back up any throw. On the rule for the batter running to first, it is a judgement call by the umpire (it should be automatic in my book, run in the runners lane on a bunt or dropped third strike or you are out). If in the judgment of the umpire the batter is in fair territory (or outside the 3 foot line) and interferes with the throw to first, the batter is out.

Its a tough play defensively because the shortstop is cheating over towards third (to cover) and so the second baseman has to cover 2nd to "hold the runer" but also must be ready to run to cover 1st. Sometimes a coach will tell the center fielder to sneak in and try a pickoff attempt at 2nd. Often the runner on second will have a massive leadoff because their really shouldn't be anyone covering the bag.

The base runners path from home to first is the dirt, the path from first to second and to third is his path and finally the path from third to home is the path. The white line only indicates a fair ball in the field of play. The dirt from first to second and then to third is oval because a runner at full speed can not make a 90 degree turn. Great idea here. Little League gives the defense the ability to issue an intentional walk without throwing a pitch one time for each batter. With a tie score in the bottom of an extra inning, any runners behind the lead runner are meaningless, anyway. If the hitter could have been intentionally walked in this manner, the defense would have a force out on any base in the infield facing the next batter in the lineup. Extra inning, 0 outs, runner in scoring position... I am not sure I would ever try to get the out at 1B, focus on the lead runner. Last thing I would want around my neck is a runner at 3B, 1 out. Field the ball, check the runner, and hope that contains the damage. Throwing the ball to 1B is exactly what the offense is hoping you're gonna do.

Another possible rationale for the second baseman covering second is if the coach instructed him to, being that they had the wheel play on, since the throw should have gone to 3rd, maybe the second baseman could have been there incase the runner chose to retreat to 2nd and you can possibly get him in a rundown. That’s a possibility but most likely, the second baseman just got confused in the moment and forgot to cover 1st.

That's why a bunt forces the defense to decide what they want to defend against. You can't cover everything if the bunt is good. Do you want to stop the guy in 2nd from advancing? Get the out at first?
If the guy at second advances but changes his mind and goes back you may have to just live with that. If he went far enough before turning around you also might have time for the CF (who's crashing in to back up) to provide a counterpart and also other infielders can reposition during all the running.

Yes, it was a mistake on the part of Taiwan.
However, there were at least two controversial which were earlier in the game.
One incident was where a Florida batter was over the plate by about four inches, where the umpire let the batter crowd the plate outside of the batter's box. The batter got hit with a ball and the umpire allowed the batter to go to first. Taiwan protested to no avail. In vidoe review it clearly showed the batter out of the box and over the plate. Under review, the play was allowed to stand.
There was another play where a Florida player got trapped between first and second. The Florida player ran to first base and got tagged out. The Florida played hit the first baseman so hard, after the tag, that the ball and glove came off of the Taiwan played and the umps called the Florida player safe and told him to go to third.
Taiwan, also, had a chance to win the game but the thrid baseman dropped the ball on an easy out.

The 2nd baseman should not be going to 2nd here as there's not going to be a play there. However, the pitcher's throw to 1st was high and wouldn't have been caught anyway. If the pitcher looks before he throws and realizes nobody is there, he should either hold the ball or run the at the runner coming from 3rd (depending on where the runner was). So the 2nd baseman went to the wrong bag, but the pitcher isn't blameless here. At the end of the day, they're 12, so tough to point the finger at anyone.

Sadly, this is a miscommunication on Chinese Taipei infielders. You are correct, the 2nd baseman "should" have covered 1st in this case, but it is 12u with good baseball knoweledge, but not MLB caliber from playing 100's of game situations like this. The rule that would affect the runner, in this case, would be 6.00j which states a runner is out if "in running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, the batter-runner runs outside (to the left of) the runner's lane, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire's judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base..."...Little League leaves some vague terms here so someone like Close Call sports would be able to interpret this better than I could, but I will assume the throw to first base was not interfered with as there was no one at first base? Could be a bad assumption on my part though.

      @billrobelen4948 17 днів тому +4

Correct. Little League uses the same rules as Major League and Minor Leagues. They all use the Official Baseball Rules, which as you state require the baserunner to interfere with the player taking the throw at first for it to be runner's lane interference. Under the OBR, for an umpire to call runner's lane interference, he must look first to see if the runner was in the runner's lane at any time. The runner is allowed to exit the lane on his last few strides, but to exit, he must have already been in the runner's lane. He then must judge that the throw was a quality throw that could have beat the runner. So if the throw goes way over the baseman's head, it is not interference. This is different from high school and college, which consider interfering with the throw to be interference.

The main mistake on this play was the ball stayed fair and the first baseman was playing the ball to go foul. That’s why he wasn’t in the picture until it was too late. The first baseman’s reaction to the bunt threw the second baseman out of sorts so he stayed at second base which threw the pitcher out of sorts and reacted by picking up the ball and throwing it to first base where no was covering. The batter executed a perfect bunt down the first base line.

Looks like the right fielder WAS backing up the pitcher's throw, but, because of the fact that the runner was occupying the space to the left of the running lane, the pitcher launched the throw to the runner's right (so as not to hit him in the back), way over into foul territory, making it take a lot longer for the right fielder to chase it down and try to make a play at the plate. The runner was actually blocking the pitcher's view of first base. I wonder if that prevented the pitcher, in the heat of the moment, from realizing that nobody was covering first? Mr. Antonelli, but if 3b crashed - he did, why would 1B also crash? You had a rhp whose momentum carried him to 1b, who in fact was quick enough to the ball to easily throw the batter out on that perfect bunt. So, I think both baselines are covered by 3b and P. Crashing 2 players doesnt buy you much, IMO and leaves an open 2b in the remote chance you get a 2b/3b rundown. On that particular bunt 2b would have had to get inside the 1b line to take the throw. Pretty hard to get there in time. And even so, with 2b (and SS to 3rd) moving it is a harder throw for 3b or P to make vs a fixed 1b. (of course 1b has to field a hard bunt - and in some cases would get beat to the bag with no 2b there. But usually the ball is bunted to 3b w/man on 2b. ***edit - BigTalk says they bunt to 1b in LL. I defer to him on that.)

I have seen leagues try to outlaw it in their house rules, but the basic rule book does not have it. And in the LLWS tournaments, only the basic rule book applies. IMO the leagues need to teach the defense of that move because they will see it in tournaments.

There is no possibility for runners lane interference on this play. By LL rules you must interfere with the fielder taking the throw, not the throw itself (the same as MLB rules in this case). Nobody covering first base, means runners lane interference is not possible. To answer the second question, the LL runners lane is still the foul line to the runners lane line. I don't think it would be possible to use the MLB rules for LL, considering the high number of dirt only infields at this level. If the second baseman was covering first, then we'd have a much more complicated situation on our hands and it would depend on if the throw was catchable or not. Note that this is different in the high school and college rule sets, which also include the throw itself.

The pitcher has no time to stop, look, and then throw. They'll never get the runner if he has to do that. That's why they practice that situation frequently with the second baseman covering first. In order to get the runner out at first, the pitcher has to assume that everyone is doing what they've practiced many times, and throw the ball to the bag. Any hesitation or delay and they'll never get him. The pitcher was just doing what he was programmed to do.

Yes, if someone had been covering 1st base we could have possible had runner's lane interference.

I think he would have been out for running inside the baseline. I believe I have already seen another kid get called out for doing that in an earlier game. But my opinion as far as the second baseman going to second is this. Chinese Taipei is really aggressive at getting the lead runners. I think he went to second thinking they were going to throw to third and get that runner in a pickle between Third and second. Because if the throw was to third, there would have been no reason for the second baseman to go to first at all. They were thinking a bunt, the throw was to third all the way.

You need to see the “nobody there” and turn around and stop that runner coming in from third. Shocking mistake from such a disciplined team.

Had the pitcher held the ball, turned and tried for a play at home, it would have looked better but ended the same. The lack of coverage cost them.

I wonder how many of the kids I coached saw this and finally realized why I made them practice bunting every practice.

No, we’re not going to try to get this batter out at second because there’s nobody on base! Wow.

I'm curious. It's my understanding that Florida lost a gane to Texas earlier in the tournament, and Texas cand in undefeated. IF that is true (not saying it is), why is Texas eliminated after 1st loss, but Florida (or any other team)
is not? If my info is wrong, okay. If not, then something is unjust about the way thd system works. Any reasonable response is appreciated.

The second baseman should feel bad...check the replay...the runner beat the throw anyway

Lets give the hitter some credit for getting a bunt down on a pitch up in the strike zone. Ideally the pitcher should put it up and in or ev en up and away. He was lucky that tbhe hitter was bunting ir that pitch would've been absolutely crushed.

The comment I have is not about today’s game but yesterday‘s game. I’m not sure when the rule changed, maybe somebody can tell me, but when did it become OK that on a missed or dropped third strike that the runner got to run to first base, if the base was open or if there was two out. I am currently 67 years old so the last time I played little league would’ve been 55 years ago, but I have watched games every now and then over the years and did not realize you can advance on a third strike AND I saw players taking a lead off the base. When did that happen? Before you had to stay on the base until the pitch crossed home plate.

Jesus people. Some of you are insane. Remember these kids are like 12 years old ( I think) and they're going to make mistakes.

I'm trying to figure out what the pitcher was thinking here, throwing it to no one. The only thing I can come up with is that as he turns to throw, maybe he saw the 1B ump out of the corner of his eye and thought it was the second baseman running over to cover first, so he threw it where he thought the second baseman would be by the time the ball got to first base. I don't know. Strange play.

Pitcher didn't check on a bunt play the second baseman should be there so he just threw.

the pitcher had time to look before throwing but
had a tall 1st baseman plus the batter blocking his view
