This is the best video on bleeding brakes that I've watched. It's very detailed and the only video that discusses extracting air out of the brake liquid. I have Formula RX brakes. Bleeding the hose and caliper works flawlessli when done like in the video, however I don't seem to be able to bleed the levers. When I create a vacuum in the syringe it pulls lots of air from the levers. There's a little hole on the inside where the handle bar attaches which lets air in when under vacuum.
You can use either Dot4 or Dot5.1 in dot specified brakes. Be careful Dot5 is not equal to Dot5.1 and Dot4. Dot5.1 has higher boiling point that is true, but we didn't find any useful difference. Dot5.1 is used for example in car racing and other high demanding continous braking conditions. Therefore use whatever suits you.
Thanks for this, helpful and clear step by step... I don't think the poster below has valid points but let's not argue tech details... I'll follow this process. Thanks
We use Avid bleed kit with modified flange on one screw to bleed Formula brakes in this video. So i guess this thing is interchangeable to some extent.
I follow your instructions. But after removing the ryving from the brake at the bottom, there comes fluid out of the system. I have tried it several times, but always the same thing. What is wrong? I have a Formula THE ONE, guess the model of 2008. Thanks for your support!
I need to bleed my Formula RX brakes, but the bleeding kit is very expensive. For 20 Euros you get two syringes, two metric screws for the calipers and two tubes to connect the screws with the syringes. The bleeding kits of the competitors are better equipped for a better price. Is there variation between the metric screws between the brands or are they all the same? Or in other words, is it possible to bleed any brake with any bleeding kit of the major brands? I am grateful for every advice.
In the video, bikebook recommenrs Dot4 brake oil. But isn't Dot 5.1 better suited as it has a higher boiling point? I am very interested in this as I want to replace the oil the manufacturer shipped the bike with (because I think it's of inferior quality. The grease they used for the pedals and seat post is a joke to be honest. And I think that when they spared on the grease, they also spared on the breake oil.).
HI could someone please tell me where we are going wrong we are at the part of bleeding the caliper and when we pull back on the plunger it sucks bubbles out but when it says to push little on the syringe, we do and our syringe will bounce back to where it was? so we slowly pulled up on the syringe and loads of bubble just keeping coming out, ok and so we thought that will do for that, and then when we cut the zippy tie the lever stayed where it was could somebody tell me what we have done wrong and how to amend it please? :) CHEERS
I have a question. When I bleed the lever, it seems like air is leaking thru the lever somewhere :S Could it be that some o-ring is dammaged in the lever? I have no oil leaking, I only get lots of bubbles.
Bullshit, maybe if you are a racer, otherwise no one will do this twice a year. I rahter say only when you feel your brakes spongy, or when you change the braking pads.
It's not the same procedure that recommends Avid but for my opinion is even better. If you first bleed a calliper the oil in syringe became dirty and then you bleed a hose with that oil. No sense.
This is a terrible video. First... DOT 4 brake fluid is HYGROSCOPIC, at 1:07 when the person is forcing the plunger down "to create vacuum" you can see the fluid being aerated by air leaking through the syringe plunger. That air has moisture in it. By doing that, they are introducing moisture into the brake fluid. Second... YOU DO NOT NEED TO CREATE VACUUM TO BLEED BRAKES. Gravity and bottom up fluid flow does that. Third... at 3:00 you can clearly see the fluid in the caliper and the fluid in the syringe are not the same and not readily mixing, they may not even be using the correct fluid. Fourth... Where are the gloves? Seriously DOT 3 & 4 is nasty stuff.

If every 'how to' video had you narrating I'd love them all.
Top video! The only step probably missing is to change old DOT oil when bleeding the hose for the first time (2:54). Thanks Miha!
Thanks that worked for my old formula bianco .. was my first time, it took 2 trys but is perfect right now. Thank you!
If you look closely you will see the flange on the copper pin is slightly modified to fit in the lever bleed port screw.
Fantastic video...extremely helpful. And her voice was actually quite nice/soothing...
Great vid, better then the instruction manual in my bleed kit, this worked first time.
Awesome explanation! This is exactly what i wanted to see. Thank you very much! :)

Merci pour ces explications !
Bonne route !

Very helpful. I am goint to try and bleed mine without the kit and gaoing from top to bottom - same way that car brakes are bled.
+Mike McCarthy Mike how did that turn out?
+perez senior Terrible! Buy the proper bleed kit.
thanks a lot- makes it really easy and works perfect the 1st time!

What is the size of the O-ring under the bleed screw? I have lost it. Thanks
Best english ;)

I think Bikebook is from Slovenia ;)

great video. thanks
How often do the hydraulic disc brakes need to be bled?
virkelie2 When they get weaker or stop working at all - then you bleed them.
DOT brakes are about 6 months and mineral oil are about 1 year.
Bullshit, maybe if you are a racer, otherwise no one will do this twice a year. I rahter say only when you feel your brakes spongy, or when you change the braking pads.
Just letting you know what the manufacturers are saying. This is why everyone is dropping DOT and going with mineral oil.
ok..I will bring my bike to the mechanic
Usefull vid but you cant use these Avid syringes on formula 2011 'the ones' they dont fit on the lever due to the contact adjuster ;)

On what bike was that done
Omfg what a nightmare to bleed thank god I've got shimano xt
Thanks.
yes thats what i had to do to make it fit, anyway good a good video
Thx.
i think your voice is beautiful!
I bled the brakes on my car but I'm too nervous to bleed the brakes on my bike haha
Where are the gloves man... but good video..pls for future.. dot 4-5.. nasty stoff... is your hands...see u soon by new video..
sory its this synthetically oil?
It's DOT, not an oil.
love the accent
You can use mute button :)
Nice

How come a woman is speaking while a man is working the system?
i love Russian accent...
