    Brian i watched this yesterday and i was able to front squat today with 0 wrist pain. Ive always had bad wrist pain with the left one and couldnt get the front squat down cause of the that. But today i did and did some reps and everything you said helped (no wrist straps and body builder form though) so thank you very much youre a true professional.

    I did front squats for the first time ever today (barbell newbie here) and it went pretty well. I actually loved it and like it better than the low-bar squat. Although I have almost zero experience with the barbell, I have watched a ton of videos so I'd had some theoretical knowledge before.
    But I got the cues about "pushing the knees out", "elbows up-hip under the bar at the start of the ascent" and "neutral chin" from this video. I don't think I applied the one about chin well enough but the other two definitely helped. So, thanks.

    Seeing this video five years after you posted it. Much of this I knew from some good coaches but the part about driving your hips forward when coming out of the hole is new to me. It makes great sense and helps to get that feeling that your elbows are initiating the upward movement. Thank you.

    Your tip about holding the straps close to the bar was a life-saver! Seen several videos about using straps, none of them seem to be aware of this crucial tip. I just started using straps for the front-squat and the bar would start slipping down and I couldn't figure out why - then I saw your video and it fixed it! So thankful!

  • @sinkfaze

    Cue #3 is perfect, I can't tell you how many videos I've watched of weightlifters/powerlifters front squatting that have the exact problems you described, and no one has been able to articulate the importance of knees out the way you did (and in no time). Bravo!
    A good tip I picked up for front rack position is to (occasionally) get a lacrosse ball and roll the hell out of that area right behind the elbows for a couple of minutes (pending you have no particular medical issues with your elbows). I was always trying to improve my thoracic spine mobility to get a better front rack with little success, not realizing that my thoracic spine also required sufficient elbow mobility. Once I rolled the elbows out, I was in a strong rack position instantly.
    Keep up the great content, very impressed!

    It took me a year of practice to get the joint mobility necessary for the traditional rack position on the front squat. Took it easy with a bare bar, little by little trying to get racked properly. A year later, I could do it. It was worth it.

    I've been using a different stretch for hand positioning, I set my hand against a wall or other surface, fingers pointed down, arm out stretched, and turn away as if I were stretching my chest, I feel it through my forearm and bicep, and shoulder. I use light pressure and gradually increase the range. It's basically what you were doing just in one step not 3.

    For front squats, I have no problem with the first position, as I have suffered through the getting my wrists flexible enough. Prior to that, I did use the straps as well. Another method to get the desired flexibility is to load a light weight and "sit in the hole" for 3-5 seconds.

    Great vid and I usually use the BB style for front squats and you're right. Once I crank up the weight and start touching 5 bills or more, stability goes out of the window, and the bar begins to drop out of position. I'm going to give your tips a go to try and improve my wrist and shoulder mobility. Holding the bar in a true rack position for front squats would be huge for me, pun intended. Cheers!

      It is ALL heavy compounds man, i talk about it in one video. I haven't done a Curl in probably a decade. If you are doing weighted pull-ups/Chin-ups, rows, Farmers, Other Strongman events, then Curls would be a waste of time. Every single person that has come to my gym has gained substantial arm mass and not one of them has performed a curl. If you enjoy doing them, then I say go or it! But if you are looking for the quickest results, your body will have to adapt way more to heavy compounds then to isolation exercises

      Yup. The shoulder stretches were key. I'd been doing the floor stretch and still getting a screaming pull in my wrists, and a ton of pain in the fingers. I added both of those shoulder stretches, and in 3 sessions (one each week) I doubled the weight on the bar because I could finally get in the damn position! AND my shoulders aren't bruised to shit from the bar rolling on them. No joke, my front squat is still shit compared to my back squat, but I can finally do them at a weight that actually hits my legs. So there. Three videos in, and my sub is already paying off, BIG TIME.

    Say Brian I got a question about Pullups. I currently can't do more than three or four unassisted for about three sets, so I use a band to help. Should I keep using this technique or just do normal pullups?

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому

      I think the band technique works for a lot of people, but I have also had good success with adding weight around your waist and doing very, very slow negatives. If you can get strong enough to trick your mind into thinking that your bodyweight is light, it won't be long until you are in the double digits.

    Same hand position if you clean the weight up? Are there specific squat variations for strongman? Good video!

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому

      I would say it is very similar to the same hand position. If anything, maybe you can get a little tighter when setting up out of a rack, but they are very much alike. And there are no specific squat variations for strongman and if there is a squat event in a contest it is usually a car or something else that really doesn't feel the same as a traditional squat. So most Strongmen focus on the front squat, Zercher Squat and SSB squat because they hit more of the muscles you actually use in a strongman event. i hope that helps!

    Great video. I'm struggling with front squats and really thought I wouldn't. The bar is really uncomfortable on my shoulders and my wrist mobility is terrible. Tried cross arm style and it was better. Tried the straps and it was not as good. I'm determined to get it down though. I can put much heavier weight on my back than my shoulders. I assume this is natural?

      Yea man, it is a rare individual who can front squat as much as they can back squat. in fact, i don't know of one person (personally) who can. It is completely normal and will just take time my friend

    Brian can you please shed some light on my form and if that's okay?? I'm a bit different, I do my front squats either zombie style or my hands up beside my neck. in other words i don't really touch the bar with my hands. making sure to keep the stability on my delts and clavicles and bar jammed up to my neck. Helps keep me totally up right and prevents me from falling forwards.

    How about demonstrating your favorite exercises that work the core; not necessarily planks but something that involves weights...maybe overhead squats?

      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  7 років тому

      ua-cam.com/video/vw036MghdXY/v-deo.html I made this one about some core exercises but maybe one dealing with nothing but weighted exercises might be a good video. Good suggestion man!

    I'm just starting with the sled and I'd like to know if there's any technique or just pulling and pulling the rope. Also I'd like to know how to do proper lunges, angles, feet position during the lunge, things like this. I would really appreciate, thanks!
    And good luck with the channel!

      Thanks marc, i'll definitely add the lung stuff to my list. and when you are talking about sled, are you talking about dragging it from a harness, or arm or arm style?

    • @federtm2
      @federtm2 8 років тому

      There is a sled tied to a rope on my gym. I suppose we are talking about sled pulls. I've never done it before, if that helps.

      Yea, absolutely man. In strongman we refer to those as "Arm over Arm" Drags. I'll add them to my list!

      I wear addipowers for all of my squats. If I don't have them, I go barefoot

    Quick question, what brand bars did you buy for the gym?

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому

      Rogue power bars mainly because they are nice bars that are relatively cheap(er). And I have a texas deadlift bar which is pretty awesome but expensive

    Would you say your front squat stance width is identical to your back squat? And is that something you would recommend? I know for me, the front squat stance width mimics a high bar squat stance width...whereas I am interested in low bar back squatting, and ultimately increasing that number.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому +3

      I would say my highbar squat and font squat are similar and my low bar may be an inch or two wider but not much at all. And i would definitely recommend building up your front squat from that stance because it is going to create different stimulus than your back squat stance which will mean more adaptation and bigger numbers for your back squat. Plus your core, posterior chain and quads are going to gain strength which will all translate over to your regular squat. I am a tim believe that the squat is more of a core exercise than a leg exercise because if you are doing low bar and you miss the lift, it is always because your core broke, you bent forward and lost it. you hardly ever see someone lack the leg strength. That is why so many people can leg press a ton but can't squat that much. Because you core is taken out of it. If you focus on building up your brace, your legs will take care of themselves.

    Stuck at a gym that has thick barbells 2" inch about... Will this affect my strength on a front squat or it doesn't matter?
