It does have words, but they don't sing them. That's because the lyrics are totally uninspired and not worthy of the music, explaining why you have never heard them. Decades apart, Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett tried to redeem the lyrics with their delivery, but few others have dared follow their example.
"Caravan" was written by Juan Tizol, who played valve trombone in Duke Ellington's orchestra. Donald Mills imitated the solo trombone and Harry "played" trumpet.
I was playing this while my sister was listening and she didn't believe me when I tried to tell her that it was them actually singing and not musical intruments. The only way I guess I could convince her would be to show her this video!
Incredible is a vastly understated word for what they were. I am 71, and had the pleasure seeing them live on various TV shows like Ed Sullivan. Soon enough I will be able to see them and their brother and dad signing on that great eternal stage. I can't wait.
I’m 63 & my dad and I loved listening to the Mills brothers since I was a little girl. Their beautiful harmonies were a joy to listen to, but these mouth music versions of songs enchanted me & still does. They were virtuosic geniuses. Dad & I used to try to imitate the instruments in our den like them, but obviously we couldn’t hold a candle to them. Fond memories- I sent this clip to my 92 year old dad to enjoy.
Thanks for posting this...how incredible! I saw them in 1974 perform here in Ft. Laud.. P.S. my late husband was a drummer... and his feature drum solo was to Caravan for many years. (I was thinking young trumpet players should practice their buzz with this song!
Incredible upload. Thank you so much. These guys had so much talent they had to do something really different to get it out. My family has been listening and singing along with these gents for decades.
They were my dad’s favourite he turned my husband on to them in the 1980’s. Had all their records, even 78’s. Sadly my mom about 10 years ago without checking with me or my siblings gave them to a charity shop. Dad passed in 1993, he was the big music lover, I guess after 10 or so years of dad gone these old records were just taking up space. I’d have made space. Oh well- thanks to UA-cam I can listen to them again. Thanks for posting this!!
Pay plucking attention kids because this is what we call 'talent' . No 'autotune' and no dreadlocks' and they could actually speak clear understandable english . They were popular for decades because they had talent and the audience knew it. They are polar opposite to much of what's being passed around today that has about as much lasting appeal as your last court date.
The melody is slightly different than in the original. Here, the chromatic motive just goes downwards. Tizol/Ellington have the last note half a step above the second to last note in that sequence. It's tricky!
Man alive! Talk about, "SMOOTH!" They invented it.
Me before the video started: Oh, the jazz standard "Caravan" has words?
Me after the video ended: Never mind. LOL.

Nat King Cole has sung the words, accompanied, among others, by Juan Tizol who penned the tune.
Didn’t sing a note and still brought the house down. And when they did sing it was just as beautiful,Now folks c’mon, this is ridiculous talent.
They were singing notes, just not singing lyrics.
I've been listening to them for 60 years. I play their music today. They're a most amazing group. The harmony is unmatched.
You have excellent taste.
You have a great taste man , God bless you

Class, talent, and pioneers....they knew how to swing! I wish I could have seen their show live!!
Juan Tizol from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 is the writer of this song who also played the trombone.
What a tone he makes with nothing but vocals...! Awesome.
The Mills Brothers always bring a smile on my face
This group has a long outstanding reputation from many celebrities and music professionals. They were among the best during their time.
The five people who gave this thumbs down must of hit it by accident......they were pure talent!!
Or more likely, they're tone deaf idiots
Yeah and you see that they really love to do it
Yeah, f*ck those people
racist
These people are music illiterate idiots.
No talent like this nowadays!!!

Incredibly impressive. The Mills Brothers music is awesome.
They were the first, if not mistaken to bring this style of improv to our ears.

Amazing and beautiful!
They were Amazing!!!
Toda una orquesta
Only thing that could have possibly made this any cooler would have been if John Jr Mills had still been living and in the mix.

what does a hairstyle have to do with music? smh
You know it’s gonna go crazy when he pulls out the hands and clasp them on his mouth
Cam someone explain to me what technique harry uses with his hands,??
lol so many memes behind this...
😍
Is this from the performance in Tivoli in Copenhagen? My father had the record when I was a kid, and this sounds identical.
Non- TBN is from a Mike Douglas show from 1966.
Correction: this was a Mike Douglas Show segment from 1966.
how old are they here?
unrecognizable
Mafia
Why isn't the upright bass player, or piano player listed?
it's the Merv Griffin Show band
@@USCollege Actually I think that’s Mike Douglas. Live from Philadelphia!
@@johnjleone I think you're right; I get them mixed up.
@@USCollege Ray Brown was the director of the Merv band
@@timdufelmeier1350 thanks, I didn't know that
That’s old school Mills Brothers right here. Except someone is playing the piano. Or are they?
extraordinaire de faire les instruments avec la bouche
Times changes, that is ok. But we made no progress.
2:00 did his watch create a black hole?
I love how the magnetic film shows, at times almost like a hidden layer. Brain waves
who or WHAT, and for what fucking reason, gave this down-vote(s)??
Does anyone know how to tag Bethesda on a UA-cam video?
How is this possible?
Joyful! Is there a cleaner recording of this available?
The four boys and a guitar even sounded good as three boys and a guitar
Men, four men and a guitar.

These guy's doesn't get the credit they deserved. They were great.
