I met Donald Mills at the Sands Casino in Las Vegas, in 1978, after seeing what was probably his very last show ever. We talked for over three hours at the bar immediately outside of the theater. I still cannot describe in mere words alone, how incredibly much that conversation has meant to me across all of these years. He was an indescribable inspiration to me, and I will remember him for all of my life. I especially remember him talking about going oversees during World War Two, with the USO shows, and how many black performers did that as well, and all of the other performers that they played with. The Mills brothers made some of the very best music that has ever been made, bar none.
That is a really cool and special story. I’m catching these guys only just now in 2022/2023. They’re clearly a special talent. Some of their appearances on UA-cam appear to be from USO shows. They’re probably rolling in their graves at light speed the way things are going these days
The Mills Brothers were who Dean admired and got his style from. This is wonderful to see because Dean was actually star struck and to have the privilege of singing with them was a dream come true for him!
If I may be so bold as to add to your excellent comment. Back when talent came from working on your craft instead of depending on ‘fixing things in postproduction’ and having a provocative music video.
There was something about Dean Martin that was always likeable...apart from the golden voice, unmatched elsewhere. Never too far from a wry smile and infectious innuendo, he was the man!
As much as Dean OWNED his show, you can see by his body language and the sheer joy on his face that he really loved performing with his heroes when they appeared on his show......
Absolutely. That is one of the reasons, every star wanted to be on his show. He made them feel relaxed and he loved performing with them. You can see it by the twinkle in his eye.
In the late 1960s, Dean Martin asked his producer Greg Garrison to book the Mills Brothers on The Dean Martin Show, saying Harry Mills was his greatest musical influence.
@Steps With Stephanie--what you say is one of my favorite things about Dean Martin. @Barbara--what you say is spot on--hope you don't mind, I'm a male who thinks that way. To add to your voices, here's a thing about Dean Martin that means a lot to me: He portrays grace, understanding, and patience as one who suffers and endures. He's beautiful.
The Mills Brothers are one of the greatest singing groups of all times. "Paper Doll" has always been one of my favorite songs. No one can sing it like the Mills Brothers.
Julius Spohn This whole thing is just wonderful, but Dean harmonising with Don @3.02 - 3.15 just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. There are not enough superlatives to describe the magic happening here.
The ease and grace with which Dean interacts here is just something to watch. I really think he and Judy Garland are possibly the greatest all around entertainers I have ever seen. Dean Martin was the maybe the top TV star of his time, as well as a huge star in films, nightclubs, and sold millions of records. Really just did it all!!
Dean always gave Harry Mills the credit as his greatest influence and you can see with your own eyes the love and adoration he had for the man and his brothers. It was mutual. They loved him right back.
My dad introduced me to The Mills Brothers as a little girl... your grandpa may have been part of his generation... whatever... their music is part of my genetic makeup as a consequence... that they are brilliant is just a plus :)
Good old Dino ! Another Icon ( who probably never thought he was one!. ) Hearing him sing with The Mills Brothers is heavenly! This "old fashioned" music is timeless ! When folks like this sing it, it's always new! The singers of today are a dime a dozen ! Talent, tempered with love & respect hardly exists anymore! Good thing we have the technology we do so that new generations can see how it is supposed to be done!
My older brothers favorite song. He found his “paper doll”, they had five children , he was the greatest brother, husband, and father. I miss him so much!
The Mills brothers were, still are wonderfully fantastic singers ❤❤❤❤,may they all rip, may God watch over all of them. The fans loved them,I am a fan as well of all of them.
Argus Garage We can only hope that the pendulum swings back to this kind of true entertainment again someday. I only hope that it will be in my lifetime, in the remaining years I have left.🤞👵🏻
J G Harry Mills was indeed a great influence - so much so that Dean ripped him off stage presence-wise lock, stock, and barrel, a move that contributed mightily to Dean's extraordinary success.
So, in your opinion, Dean Martin, was nothing but a rip-off ? Really ? First of all, where did all this "Dean Martin was influenced by Harry Mills" ... stuff, come from ? I have almost all of his early 78's, 45's, and 33 LPs, so I'm not a new-fan or something, of Dean Martins. It's strange that suddenly, I keep reading something, that I've never heard before, anywhere. I'm sure that Dean Martin had many, many influences, as did or do, all great performers, and yes, I 'm sure that the members of the Mills Brothers, were influenced by others as well, but to imply or say, that Dean Martin was just influenced by one man alone and that he, rushed out and ripped this one man off or cloned him, and then, made a success out of himself, by using this others man's personality traits or style, is absurd. Celebrities were cordial to each other back then, they said nice things to or about each other, they had respect for one another, it was the way of things in the past and it was a good way to be, but I don't believe Dean Martin ever said, at any time, to anyone, that he was influenced by any particular individual or person alone. Dean Martin was many things, not just a vocalist, whereas, The Mills Brothers, were just vocalists. I personally liked and or like, both Dean Martin and The Mills Brothers, but they are different performers or stage personalities completely and any attempts to take credit away from one and just hand it over to another, with no sources mentioned, is the real "rip-off" .
@@phredl Can you provide a link or otherwise point to where I can find that? As with MrRJDB1969, I never heard or read about the Harry Mills-Dean Martin connection from Dean, himself, and I occasionally come across things that make me wonder, "Where did that come from? Who said it first and how did it take off? Why is it accepted as truth?" For example, this alleged quote that often makes the rounds, said by Frank Sinatra about Judy Garland: "The rest of us will be forgotten. Never Judy." The notion that Frank, whose ego tank didn't exactly point to E, expected to be forgotten is beyond absurd, but it keeps popping up as fact.
Two Legends together -- I grew up on The Mills Brothers music as my mother loved them and played their records all the time . It's great to see my two favorites together - and you can tell Dean really loves it !
This stuff, which my dad watched all the time, is appreciated so much more when you put a few decades behind you, because I'm missing him, and thinking of his beaming smile, when such acts were on the tube.

The Great Mills Brothers.. The very essence of swing! My one sadness is that they weren't able to know that because a medium such as youtube they will be forever admired and appreciated by generations to come!
I was a little boy when watching his show with family members that are no longer around and seeing these clips takes me back to our living room. I miss the love.
Can we just have the love worldwide that these brothers show? What's wrong with everybody these days? Please, please, just love the one you're with. Oh my gosh, what a voice, Dean. The one who can sing anything. Gone too soon. (sad face)
One need look no further than this video clip for evidence of Dean's tremendous admiration and affection for Harry Mills. How fortunate Dean was to be able to perform with his greatest musical influence. It's obvious he's having a hell of a lot of fun!
This makes me so emotional Dean was a great guy Stood by his principles He refused to attend JFK's inauguration because Sammy Davis Jr was snubbed! That spoke volumes!!

As the song is about to begin, Harry has the look of a man holding a hand of five aces. He opens his mouth and out pours the gift of God. lol. I absolutely love this clip. :)
Dean and the Mills brothers. Great outstanding wonderful music. You could tell Dean really loved singing with them . Some I listen to Dean and the Mills brothers everyday. 👍

America! Wake up young people! This is TALENT. This is ARTISTRY! This is REAL MUSIC!
The Mills Brothers were who Dean admired and got his style from. This is wonderful to see because Dean was actually star struck and to have the privilege of singing with them was a dream come true for him!
Dean once told producer Greg Garrison that it was Harry Mills that he patterned his style after. You can see why here.

Such FACTS!

When Don opened up at 02:20, nothing but pure velvet came out. These guys are pros, pure and simple. I can see why my parents enjoyed their music.
This is what I call "The Dream Team"... Dino and the Mills Brothers... My OH MY!
This has always been my favourite number in the whole Dean Martin Show.
