Great video nate! I’ve tried this on my 11 month old GSD and he’s not very vocal when doing these types of training even if he’s frustrated he’ll just lie down and get uninterested in what we’re doing. He knows the speak command but he doesn’t do it every time we say it. Any tips?
Harley didn't bark at first either. We had to start playing with the other dogs to get her frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once she did, we rewarded it and built on that success. It can take some time, but the key is finding something that makes your dog frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once you do and you start rewarding it, your dog will be able to make the connection. Best of luck. Cheers!
Great vid. I’m going to watch more of you stuff. Nice and simple and to the point. My main question is do you go into any detail on how to get them to then stop barking. 👍🏼
Thanks! It's just like letting a dog on the couch when commanded. It's okay when the dog is asked to come onto the sofa, but not okay if the dog hasn't been invited. You just have to be clear with the rules and expectations. :)
I was always a bit concerned about teaching the speak command. because it took some patience to teach her calmness in the first place and I dont want to undo the good work. I'm willing to it try now.
Hi Nate, do you have any video on how to teach dogs to STOP barking? My german shepherd always barks at dogs and walkers on the other side of the fence and in walks, and I have no clue on how to avoid that behavior. There are some videos out there, but your techniques and consistency are the best!
Thanks. I should have added the quiet command in this video. 🤦 Check out this video, it's a good way to teach the quiet command. Once they know the command, then you can correct the behavior for reliability. Just use a command like "quiet" instead of the hand signal the trainer in this video uses: ua-cam.com/video/0vtn8NhofOw/v-deo.html Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Remember, it’s important that we set up our dogs up for success through staging different scenarios, so we can reward them the second they do it right. We also set them up for failure, so we can correct them the moment they do something wrong. Once you correct a dog for any bad behavior, you must immediately reward them when they are no longer doing that behavior. So if your dog was barking and you corrected your dog, the second your dog stopped barking, you would praise them for making the right choice. So your dog barks, you say one "no" (or whatever word you choose), then you would correct your dog. The moment your dog stops barking, praise and reward. :) I hope this helps!
Hi Marc! My Gsd has the exact opposite problem actually. He never bark, almost mute. Just wondering how is your gsd raised, does he live inside the house with you guys or lives outdoor or on a cage? So far i've understood that they bark only if kept on a cage. Your experience might help. Thanks in advance!
Hi @@bishalkuikel8066 , she lives like a queen! Never in a cage, never chained. Sometimes inside the house, sometimes at the garden. My guess is that she didn't socialize enough at the early stages and now is very friendly with those who she knows, but not so much with strangers.
How timely. Now all I need to do is work out how to get my puppy to bark when she needs to go out to toilet 🤔. Brilliant as always but this one really made me laugh 😆
I hung a string of bells by the back door. I jingled it and said potty every time we went outside and then stood on the lawn until he did his job. It took about a week, at first he was scared of the bells. Now every time he wants out I get a jingle. Best wishes~

My dog (lab) is a really quiet girl. She'll do a single bark maybe 1-2 times a week. I like it that way haha. But I also want to teach her to bark on command. My three thoughts/worries are: 1. How do I get her to actually bark when she never does? 2. Doesn't teaching her to bark enforce reactivity? 3. Will this start to make her want to bark all the time? Thank you for any feedback!

And I get jealous of your dog bro 😁, because my dog is way too lazy that when I teach him at least a simple one he instantly go to sleep even before starting. He doesn't want to cooperate. What shall I do!!!
Lol! Thanks! Some dogs can be lazy, just like people. You can try to increase his food and toy drive, but no guarantee it will work. It depends a lot on the dogs genetics. Most dog’s low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward. A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time. If you are like a lot of people that would like to use toys in training, but you have a dog that doesn’t seem that motivated for toys, you can use a technique to try and increase your dog’s toy drive. Just keep in mind that not all dogs enjoy playing with toys-even if you do increase their toy drive. The first technique is to “clean house” if you have toys scattered all over the place. In this case it’s much like free feeding a dog. Why would a dog want to work for something they get for free? Your dog must know that the only way he will be able to play with a toy is if he works for it. However, once your dog is willing to work for the toys you can start allowing them to have toys for free during the day. The next technique to enhance toy drive is to build “frustration”. This is the process you’ll want to follow: Attach a harness or an agitation collar to your dog. The point is just to make sure you can restrain the dog. You can also connect the leash to a pole or any other object to create a back-tie. Have a friend begin twirling or teasing with a toy just beyond reach of the dog. Building more distance can often create more frustration, so build distance as needed. Keep doing this until the dog becomes “frustrated” and barks. At this point, give verbal praise and reward the dog with the toy for barking (plus petting and attention, etc). But make sure you or your friend holds on to the toy while the dog plays with it. A flirt pole or ball on rope will work great for this. If the dog releases the toy from the grip, run back and continue the teasing until the dog barks again. Now it can become like a game: Try to steal the toy from the dog (if the dog let's go of it, don't rip it from the dog), and if successful, return to teasing, and once again reward if the dog barks. This helps build toy drive because much like humans, dogs want what they can't have. They also want what others want and have. This helps simulate that feeling which can in most cases build more toy drive. This works best when you start this during the imprinting stage of a dogs life. However, it can work later in the dogs life as well.
teaching them to bark is easy. I taugh my gsd how to at about 2 months. and we used this as communication when she needed things. I do not advise teaching a bark command for that lmao they are very loud and when shes bored she uses her outside bark. very loud very frustrating, would love to know how to reverse this lol ppl be careful when teaching this
Lol! Yeah, that can happen. To teach "quiet", ask your dog to bark, then say "quiet" the moment the dog is quiet, then praise and reward. Once they understand what quiet means, then you can reinforce the command. :)
Just like any behavior, your dog may offer it up to get a reward. If you don't want your dog to offer up the behavior, then only reward your dog when the behavior is commanded. :)

6:33 I love your video and it was very helpful, so this is not a critique. I just have a question how do I get my dog to stop barking now every time she wants to play with the toy? Its driving me nuts.
It would be easy to make them think that. I would suggest that you work hard to teach her only to bark on command. Don't give her anything until you say the command. If she's barking like crazy; turn your back and ignore her until she's quite. Once she's quite; turn back around and give her the bark command. If she barks within 2-3 seconds of the command; give her the toy or treat. (If she barks 3 seconds or more after the command: she won't put the two together.) If she barks before you say the command; turn your back to her again. She should soon learn that Bark does not mean play. It is a command that she'll only get rewarded for if she does it when told.
Yes, it's possible for the dog to think that. Once you teach the command, just don't reward when the behavior is offered up and only reward when the behavior is commanded, just like Tony said. Cheers!
Would this training lead to more barking in general for our dog? I want to teach him to bark on command but I do not want to generally encourage barking as a means for the dog to get what he wants around here...please let me know.
Your dog will end up trying to offer up the behavior to get a reward. However, after your dog know it on command, then only reward your dog when you ask for the behavior. Don't reward if you don't ask for the behavior and your dog should stop offering it up. :)

Cheers!
This is a fun method dude..you can apply this method in all tricks.. good and safe for you and fun for the dog🥳🥳
Thanks and I agree, most dogs enjoy this training. :)
I wasn't prepared to hear "Respond!" out of nowhere like that. Flashback city.

Cool! 😎 Thank you! I love your channel. You teach clear and easy to understand.
Thank you! I just wish the audio wasn't so bad on this one! Lol!

wow! this very helpful. you guys are awesome for doing this! you just earn a new subscriber!

Hey Nate kan you please tell us where you became a dog trainer and leave a link in the description, because I want to check it out after the lockdown

I was always a bit concerned about teaching the speak command. because it took some patience to teach her calmness in the first place and I dont want to undo the good work.

Hello!!
Nice to meet you.I am a person who trains explosive detection dogs in Korea.
I learned how to train well.
Awesome! Thank you for visiting my channel. :)
Just use a command like "quiet" instead of the hand signal the trainer in this video uses: ua-cam.com/video/0vtn8NhofOw/v-deo.html
Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior.
I hope this helps!
@@NateSchoemer Thank you! You're the best!
Man what a great video ! I’m getting a boy gsd and going train him,
Awesome! Thanks, Peter O'Brien!
The drill instructor looks so nice 😭
Haha! He's a super nice guy. Hard to believe he was a Drill Instructor.
Great video. Spot on well done.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching! Cheers!
How would I do this. I have 2 German Shepard and they are 3 months. Would I have to do it together or one at a time ?
One at a time, and if you don't have an extra person to help, you can always use a back tie. Thanks for watching!
How timely. Now all I need to do is work out how to get my puppy to bark when she needs to go out to toilet 🤔. Brilliant as always but this one really made me laugh 😆
Lol! Thanks! :)

Your explanation is as good as Michael Ellis. That should mean a lot. Good work.

Wtf. Is that a compliment?
This is the process you’ll want to follow:
Attach a harness or an agitation collar to your dog.
Best command to put them in drive! Just be cautious with the doors you want to open in your dogs mind.
teaching them to bark is easy.
Hi Nate, im thoroughly enjoying your videos, thank you !
Awesome! Thank you!
After this though, does the dog just bark whenever it wants the toy? Cuz I don’t really want that, I just want him to bark when I say
Just like any behavior, your dog may offer it up to get a reward. If you don't want your dog to offer up the behavior, then only reward your dog when the behavior is commanded. :)
While damn your subscription number went sky rocket. Last time I was here I was sub number 200 hundred something now you at 32k.

Does this lead into the dog overly barking when they want something from you?

Will you do one on how to teach tug? I was told I’m injuring my dog the way I’m playing and so I’m looking for some ways to start over
I if it’s a pup you gotta be gentle because you can’t break out their teeth
Marley G she’s like one and a half /2
Audra Welsh ohh well it’s okay to use your force when playing with here
As long as you’re in an open area you can’t hurt her, unless you drop her hard when you lift her up
Marley G I’m pretty sure the guy knows what he’s doing and I have never trained tug with my dog before so I’m just going to stop until I’ve got more confidence in it
Audra Welsh ohh
Alrightss
6:33 I love your video and it was very helpful, so this is not a critique. I just have a question how do I get my dog to stop barking now every time she wants to play with the toy? Its driving me nuts.
I wanna do this but I'm worried its gonna teach her that bark means play?
Cheers!
I just found out your channel I’ll be going thru a lot of vids good work!
Awesome! Thank you! :)
