Great video nate! I’ve tried this on my 11 month old GSD and he’s not very vocal when doing these types of training even if he’s frustrated he’ll just lie down and get uninterested in what we’re doing. He knows the speak command but he doesn’t do it every time we say it. Any tips?
Harley didn't bark at first either. We had to start playing with the other dogs to get her frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once she did, we rewarded it and built on that success. It can take some time, but the key is finding something that makes your dog frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once you do and you start rewarding it, your dog will be able to make the connection. Best of luck. Cheers!
Lol! He will if you correct him. It's just like letting a dog on the couch when commanded. It's okay with the dog is asked to come onto the sofa, but not okay if the dog hasn't been invited. You just have to be clear with the rules and expectations. :)

It would be easy to make them think that. I would suggest that you work hard to teach her only to bark on command. Don't give her anything until you say the command. If she's barking like crazy; turn your back and ignore her until she's quite. Once she's quite; turn back around and give her the bark command. If she barks within 2-3 seconds of the command; give her the toy or treat. (If she barks 3 seconds or more after the command: she won't put the two together.) If she barks before you say the command; turn your back to her again. She should soon learn that Bark does not mean play. It is a command that she'll only get rewarded for if she does it when told.

My dog is 20 months old and she's only ever barked once. She will sometimes whine/growl quietly but she doesn't bark. I've tried getting her to bark with toys and food which she loves and learned many tricks with, but bark just doesn't work, even if it's not a full blown bark but something quieter. She tries all her tricks and ends up laying down and falling asleep, or just walking away. It seems i just can't get her frustrated enough for her to make sounds.
That can happen. With Harley, we had to first play with other dogs while she was on a back-tie. That was enough to get her to bark and then we transferred it to the toys. It's all based on frustration. I hope that helps! :)

I have a question: i would like my dog to bark on command, but i don't want my dog to bark whenever she wants something (e.g. the ball/ a toy). How do i prevend that from happening? Because now it looks like she is barking when she wants the ball and not just when he says: respond. Thanks in advance for the answer!

Sometimes it can take more work with some dogs and some may never bark, but most will. In some cases, I need to play with other dogs while the dog is on the back-tie. It's all about building that frustration. That will often get the dogs less likely to speak, to bark.
@@NateSchoemer Could you make a video on getting your dog to wear equipment? My dog HATES wearing a harness and he losses interest in playing with a toy when I get it on him. He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

Thanks! Only reward her for barking when you ask for the behavior. If you don't reward when she offers it, then she should stop and only perform the command when asked to.
@@NateSchoemer Thank you so much for the answer!
Greetings from the Netherlands
I want my dog to speak but not bark every time I have her toy. Sometimes we play fetch late at night and I don’t want her waking anyone up. Any alternatives?
You can also try knocking on the wall to get your dog to bark for the physical cue.
Does this cause them to bark whenever they want the toy when you are actually playing with them or do they understand to bark only with the command
Didn't know slapping is a compliment
Not sure I understand your comment, but thanks for watching and commenting. :)
@@NateSchoemer XDDDD I meant that you slapped the dog on both sides when they did the right thing. I've only seen that kind of a compliment for horses when their riders tap on their necks
It doesn’t work on my dog! What can I do?
You can also try knocking on the wall to get your dog to bark. :)
I don't have a dog.. lol
Thanks for watching... and go get a dog! Lol! :)
Is this trick possible to teach a dog to bark at other people? Like what they do on mondio
Yes. :)
Mine is a 2 months 12 days old female doberman.. she just only listens to this command - sit and Handshake(left one)... And can't make her do anything.. seeing all these videos makes me jealous 😭...
I had a Charli that looked just like him. If you ever need a home for one let me know.
Sorry her. Got that all the time with Charli.
😁👍
So I just got a new puppy around 1yr old. She's a Malinois Shepherd Mix. I can't get her to play tug of war. Is there a trick?
I'm having trouble i. Trying to teach my mates dog commands hes a pocket bully , he's so used to being told not to bark im finding it impossible to teach him bark , for example in an hour I taught him to take out of hand gently, to lydown/ roll over to stand on back legs to stand but this is a area I'm really struggling, I spent over 3 hours with a treat getting him to be vocal which he wouldn't do , any advice
uh quick question if you can still see this what if my dog doesnt bark at all like nothing makes her bark what do I do she is also this type of dog
Some dogs won't bark. You can also try knocking on the wall. That will get most dogs to bark as well.
What is the toy you are using?
pethouse.com.mt/chuckit-rope-fetch
Can you use treats
Yes. :)
Hello! I enjoy watching your videos since I am a new mom of a 8 week old German shepherd. At what age should I start training him? Harley seems a bit older then mine.
He’s in the puppy phase right now and is sometimes hard to keep him focused on training.
Anything helps! Thank you.
I start training puppies as soon as they are happy and comfortable in their new environment. :)
Okay thank you so much! I appreciate the response :)
We started out gsd puppy training at about 8 weeks. Get them socialized early, too
Will this work with smaller dogs who aren't as vocal?
Sometimes it can take more work with some dogs and some may never bark, but most will. In some cases, I need to play with other dogs while the dog is on the back-tie. It's all about building that frustration. That will often get the dogs less likely to speak, to bark.
@@NateSchoemer Could you make a video on getting your dog to wear equipment? My dog HATES wearing a harness and he losses interest in playing with a toy when I get it on him. I was able to get him used to his prong collar and E-Collar, but for some reason he doesn't like the harness. Thanks for the tips as usual!
My dog wont bark , i tried toy and food...is there other way?she only bark when people come
Try using other people to make your dog bark. Cheers! :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks! Eventually i tied her to a tall stik and then run around with a toy and food and she finally did it!
Do you know how I can do this with an extremely quiet dog, he just does not want to bark I’ve been sitting here for an hour with treats and toys but he just chomps.
You can also try knocking on the wall to get your dog to bark. You can see an example of it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/0vtn8NhofOw/v-deo.html
@@NateSchoemer I’ve tried knocking and sound effects on UA-cam but nothing😂 any ideas?
Questioning how capable my dog is of doing this. They ran into the glass screen door thinking it was open today.
Bruh hahaha 😂
LMAO.
I’ve done that as a human
@@PushinDaCushionSame, LMAO.

I know I'm not the only person here who thinks he sounds like Steve-O

Lol! Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. :)
I agree
Hahaha
Hahahaha
That's why it was in your recommended.. 😂
kinda difficult when my dog doesn’t bark
Yes, that would make it difficult.
Yes, should be noted this work if your dog naturally barks a lot. More common with German Shepherd.
That is absolutely brilliant. This is real results from real training, this is what I love seeing.
Thanks! :)
Greaat
The first time I watched this was a while back so after watching this I did this technique w my dog, it worked fantastic! Appreciate your help, I recommend this!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy the video was helpful! :)
What word do you say for it to bark on command?

The dog: IM GONNA SWALLOW THE WHOLE FU**ING BALL 0:09
Lol!
Can you do a video about teaching them to stop bark
Yes, I'll add it to the list. In the meantime, after you get them to bark, then say the quiet command. The moment they stop barking, mark and reward. It's easy to teach the quiet when you teach speak. I should have added that in this video. :) Thanks!
No bullshit, straight to the point, effective method and clear instructions. Best youtube dog trainer hands down
Thanks, Parda King! I really appreciate that! :)
How would I do this. I have 2 German Shepard and they are 3 months. Would I have to do it together or one at a time ?
One at a time, and if you don't have an extra person to help, you can always use a back tie. Thanks for watching!
My dog does everything apart from this
Nice! :)
