I know you hear this a lot but, you have no idea how much your videos are helping me daily, to shape my GSD puppy into one great dog. So far your techniques have proven to be 100% effective and much MUCH better than anything I ever tried on my previous dogs. Thank you mr. Robert!
That's a great tip. We actually stumbled on to it with Halo our 1 yr GSD, who loves to bark! We noticed that when we put her in down position she would quit and nothing else worked. Life is so much quieter now, and less stressful for her and us!
Robert is the greatest!! I've gotten so much help from these videos and his members videos. He's helped me training my insane 8 month old male Golden Retriever (kidding on the insane part, actually to smart for his own good) that I would be lost without him. This man knows his craft!!
really enjoyed this video..I have a lab/aussie and she loves to bark so of course she learned the speak command very quickly.. the difficult part is getting her to stop. I am a caretaker for my mother..the dog sleeps with my mother.. since I live on the top floor (mother lives on ground floor) I taught our dog to 'speak' on command in case mum ever needed me in the middle of the night. Will certainly be practicing your technique in hopes I can get her to stop barking when something triggers her. *Liked & Shared*
So important to train in drive. One of my dogs was very barky before training and took me ages to get it on cue. I ended up capturing it as nothing I could do would trigger barking when I wanted it. Patience paid off of course.
Agreed. I hear the "make the dog tired" to cure chase behaviour etc. but that isn't a realistic situation. Drive control is so important. Janet has done so well. Agility is great fun : ) Great info . Thank you : )
I tried this with my pup today. Yesterday was my first time getting him to bark on command. I was rewarding with one bark. So he would go quiet right after. Today I tried letting him bark more and then told him down so he can stop barking. He went down but kept barking 🥲
Thank you for this video. My dog is very attentive to strangers anywhere near "his" home and alerts me with barking. However, he gets so worked up that it is extremely difficult to get him to calm quickly. He knows his sit and down very well and in different areas during our walks. Using the down command during his "House protection" mode will be a great tool. Thank you so much.
This looks great and I’ve started training it. I have a 4 year old Jack Russell who has a little nuisance barking in reaction to noise outside the home and over excitement/hysterical barking when certain visitors arrive. My question is...often he’s already lying down when he barks...how does this approach translate in that situation please?
and what if dog is still barking in down position? or is barking when resting on his bed..or carpet....just because he hears something behind door/window
Yup. It's more of an issue when we stay overnight at places away from home, especially hotels! The "scarey hallway strangers" and random doors slamming in the distance at all hours of the night. He's a growling machine with an occasional bark that jolts me up! It's frustrating bc I haven't been very successful in training him to shut it when I tell him to. I get no little sleep when I take him on vacations (other than that he's an awesome travel buddy which is why I make the sacrifice). 😉
My GSP often barks in the down position because he wants to get up and knows he is not allowed to get up. This s an issue when out hunting. He has to stay down for hours. Not a problem, he stays down as long as I tell him so. But eventually he gets bored and begins to sing whole operas or he barks immediately after laying down because he would rather do something else...
Beautifully speaking dog! I cannot get it from my 8-months old lab... He just patiently stares at me without any idea what I want him to do. He barks only on other dogs when he is very excited by playing with them. Maybe he is too young yet?
I've finally made him bark at command! I tried for half an hour to build his drive seeing that he is closer and closer to bark and finally he made it! Then it was much easier and in few minutes he quickly understood what I need him to do. :)
Hi Are you still answering questions? Im rather at my wits end. I have two central asian shepherds, the Alabai version I think. Im used to dogs but first time with this breed and these two are a handful. Theyve just turned one. Ive started short walking on the halti and they are both excellent and obedient although one is a little grumpy! They are learning : down, sit, come, stay and are very good but ... they are however extremely independent thinkers and it can take persistance to get what you want usually "wassis" works if the "come" is being ignored, ie a good treat to draw them in. The are not allowed out the door until they sit, stay then command to go, ie I am teaching obedience training. The one thing i seriously struggle with knowing what to do is the barking. They have strong guarding instincts but I wonder if theres something else like nervousness too? There's the "hear a sound and bark like mad at it" even though we cant hear a thing from within the house! The main problem though is one of them barking non stop when outside playing in the big garden, at anything, birds, wind, trees, anything. It has taken over my life as I can no longer sit down and do my work as i have to call him to be quiet or come back in so as not to drive me and my neighbours nuts constantly. When hes in he is quiet, until some sound we usually cant hear (or the neighbours dog barking etc) sets him (and his brother) off. The combination of the barking and now them fighting (one is vying for top dog and occasionally it explodes so they are fed seperately and given seperate night sleep and day time naps and some leisure time seperately whilst they work it out - not too worried, hoping they work it out and live more easily together as time goes by). Whilst Im working with it all, its exhausting and Id love to know how to tackle the random barking as I just cant find any videos on others having this problem. I described it generally so as to give a better overall picture. with so many thanks Tricia England
Many things you can do. I got mine to do it by coverinf myself with a bed sheet and through a glass door he will see me and bark. That was the only way I could get him to bark.
stuart kent I just asked my trainer the same thing and he said to frustrate the dog somehow and when he/ she barks, mark (say yes or good) and reward. Hope that helps you

Hi Robert greetings from Medellin, Colombia. Thanks for those videos. @@RobertCabralDogs Dear Robert. Thanks for the reply. I have trained my dogs with your method. Is there a way to send you a video of my training? It would mean alot to me if you can watch it. Greetings from Pakistan.
I refer to this video on a question I asked on your Q&A recent video. I was using this method for Shadow when he is barking. He follows the down but at down command he is still barking. What am I doing wrong?
I have a 4 acre property and goats, sheep, turkeys, etc. Their is also coyotes around because I like far from the city and more into the woods. What types of dog should I get so that it has a good interaction with my animals but also protect them from the coyotes?
Could you make a video about training to get the drive up? My dog has almost no drive, I can't get him worked up with food, treats, toys, balls, anything! Sometimes he'll get excited over a stick for about 15 seconds, but that's about it.
Hi mine too. Nothing triggers her. Food toys. She is excited only 5 mins after dinner and that's it. Whatever I can teach her Is within this 5 mins!!! Then she.... retires... to her ... Chambers....her pillow!!!!! Any advice?
My dog loves patrolling the yard for squirrels. It is one of only two things that keeps her alert. ( except other prey and dogs). Play, tug don't do it for her. I have tried and tried to get her to play. I feel she thinks I don't know what I am doing? She will respond to food when I use it to reward after marking a behavior. I too would like some tips on engaging a 3 yr old to play. It seems the more I show interest in her squirrel chasing the more responsive she is to my redirections to "leave it" when dogs pass.I praise her and she loves it!! ( she is dog reactive on leash). I am quite certain one of her previous owners ( I am her 4th owner 😒) bullied and abused her. She is so sweet. But certain objects she sees and noises still make her cower. It makes me so sad and angry that anyone would do this to a dog!
Our barking issue is mostly when one dog is in their crate and the other is out. The dog in the crate will bark uncontrollably. Another instance is when one of our cats walks past the crate when they are in it they back and jump at the crate door. When they are both out of their crates they don't bark really at all. Any suggestions to what I can do to stop crate barking?
No, I see that you use signlanguage aswell to make a point and that is extremly important to point out. That's why you actually choose to spread your fingers when you said he was going to continue to bark. Jaime is reading the cue when you engage the dog with fingers spread.
Great video.goin to try and get our Mali to do this. One question, what’s the treat?obviously it’s good as you are really chomping down on it.just wondering. Keep op the great work. Love all your vids🐕🐕🐕
@@JourneysCurrentEvents I would recommend against pepperoni as this can over a short period of time cause serious health problems for the dog and organ damage. Many of the spices in them and definitely the salt are not a very safe option for a dog. Anyways don't take my word for it I am a dog trainer myself but I encourage you to ask your veterinarian they will agree with what I've said about this. These types of foods are not going to seem to be bad or hurt the dog immediately but like I was saying over time they are absolutely harmful for dog's. Anyways just wanted to point that out for you and anyone else who might read this and doesn't know how harmful it can be for dog's. Have a good one.🙂👍✌🐕
What if your dog's response to frustration it's to "settle" and wait? I can't get him frustrated enough to bark. He definitely has high drive though... So I'm confused and struggling to get a result.
Lie down on the floor/ground face-to-face. Show, but do not give, treats until he barks. Be prepared. It can take hours with a dog that prefers to shutdown. Set aside a day off work. Do not feed the dog. The hungrier the better. Food drive will be at its peak. Spend 3, 4, 5 ... as many as necessary ... 20 minute sessions teaching the "bark". When unsuccessful after 20+ minutes, crate or separate the dog for 20 minutes and try again. Be calm and patient. Only the dog should be frustrated. This also works for the "growl/ on guard" command, but you must growl at the dog while training, so they learn what is expected.
Well my GSD will continue to bark even when I tell him to lay down. It just make him little quieter. So im.guessing u tell the dog to lay down and wait for him to be quiet then give the reward?
My 4 month puppy rarely barks, she only does it sometimes when people walk towards us. Has anyone been in this situation and how did they get their dog to bark so they could mark the behavior?
PLEASE HELP? No matter what I do my dog won’t bark for me. She never barks in prey drive the only time she barks is when she’s in defence drive when someone comes by my house. Will the marker still work when she’s in defence or is there another way?
I'm a new subscriber, I got my dog when she was already 8 months old. I've gotten her off leash trained, but my biggest issue is getting her to not jump on people when they enter the house (people she recognizes) is there a video on this page to help with that??
I only bring up the off leash trained because I've gotten her to be very well behaved and obedient on just about every other thing. Her jumping is my key issue that I'm unsure how to fix. I'd rather not go around and hear unorthodox fixes
I just rescued an abused and abandoned German Shepard, I can’t really find any videos to make him bark, he’s very quiet, I want him to start barking and making noise, he’s just a little too calm 🤣, i can’t believe I’m complaining about my dog being too calm but I am, is there a way I can get him to bark when he never has before? 😂
i'm teaching my malinois to bark, i've used his ball for all commands in the past and have never had an issue since he has crazy ball drive. For reason all of the sudden he figured it out. I tell him to "speak" and he barks then I reward him with the ball. I ask for the ball back and now he ducks his head avoiding my hand and it takes me a few commands to get the ball back. Any suggestions, this is still Day 1 of training the "speak" command.
hi, my German shepherd is 2 years old he doesn't bark unless someone raise his hand on me or when i tell him watch, i tried teasing him with toys and treats but did not work, any ideas please. Note: i got my dog when he was 1 year and half and they use to beat him now i have given him self confidence and i do train him daily to be strong, he gets scared almost from everything please help>
@robertcabral why do you give the treat from your mouth? Also Jimmy is already trained - what about showing us dogs that are not trained to stop barking on a Down command?
Nice video but the title is a little misleading it doesn't really go into how to get a dog to bark. Overall not a bad video I'm also a dog trainer and I just come across this channel and am just checking out your video's.🙂👍✌
with our dog 'leave it' also work as stop barking as in stoo what you're doing. Down also works, but we implemented leave it with many other activities
My dogs are 7 months old, we live in the country, and they bark in the middle of the night..we know its due to animals in the woods, and their pen is on the edge by our house
My dog isn't a natural barker to show excitement. He only barks when someone's at the door. How can I teach my dog to bark on cue? I tried to use the sound of a doorbell and attach the word "speak" in front of it, but he stopped responding to the doorbell when he realized nobody was at the door.
My dog runs to the edge of the yard, and barks at nothing, especially all night. He runs away if I try and get to close or put a leash on. He's too smart for his own good. He runs back and forward avoid us while continuously barking. It's like he is doing it to annoy us on purpose.
Our boys spend a lot of time in their 'paddock'. This is like a fishbowl with all kinds of stuff on the other side of the glass that is interesting, exciting and totally frustrating to our boys. I WANT the dogs to bark. We live on 5 acres for goodness sake. Hubby can't stand it. They truly are not 'barkers' that just go on and on and on with no focus except the barking makes them feel better. Sort of like a horse biting wood and 'cribbing' or a cat bouncing his forehead off a wall. Our dogs are not like that. Barking lets people know we have dogs, BIG dogs. That is enough for their job description for guarding. Just their size and DEEP RUMBLING EVEN A HOWL BARK is a major deterrent for anyone coming onto the property with bad intentions? I brought up the idea to TEACH them to bark on command and that went over like a pile of poop in the middle of the table with hubby! Yay!! Robert you've solved yet another argument in favor of our boys! Another question we have is how to SOCIALIZE our dogs when there are no people or other dogs around. I walked Jack over to a neighbor's the other night who has two dogs, I've tried to drag them around the neighborhood whenever possible to be around other dogs and people. Jack was almost a Goofy at heel and then, the neighbor's dogs came to the gate and Jack completely flipped out. Looks and sounds like a grizzly bear. Whew! I had to secure the leash to a post or my arm would have come out the socket. I've been trying to sign up for a doggy class primarily to socialize them but, well, it will have to be this gal's private lessons for now. Thanks also for the notes on feeling like if we just worked them out before training they'd learn better yet not a good idea. These boys are a handful, so powerful! We ARE getting them a JOB to do. This Urban Mushing gig. Perhaps we'll be able to meet lots of dogs and people while out on the back roads around here. Well, a few anyway. While they are 'captured' in harnesses pulling cinder blocks? Never had this much problem with any of my dogs. We are off grid and that makes dogs for security important but I do not want 'guard' dog as part of the repertoire. I don't think we have to worry about LOW drive. THANK YOU. I won a little argument! I LOVE our boys. I'll have to be a proud mommy and send you pictures!! Grins. Just what you need, huh?
I think it's so the dog looks at his mouth, which is where the treat is coming from. He wants the dog to have that eye-to-eye connection with his face, so he pays attention to him.
With my black lab I would stare at him and tell him to bark. And I would bark. Now that he’s been doing it for so long all I have to do is stare at him and mouth the words without saying them. And he’ll bark.

How do I calm my down when he is barking in a down?
I never thought i'd learn so much on lecture type tutorial. Good job my man keep it up!
It's so interesting that to get a dog to stop barking, you teach the dog to bark (but ONLY on your terms.)
I believe that once you teach "speak" the dog becomes more aware of his barking which helps them control it better.
your the best Rober....thanks for teaching me how to stop my dog barking MATE......

That makes sense!
No, I see that you use signlanguage aswell to make a point and that is extremly important to point out. That's why you actually choose to spread your fingers when you said he was going to continue to bark. Jaime is reading the cue when you engage the dog with fingers spread.
Does this work when the dog is barking at my guests? New dog owner here, thanks for your help.
Robert - what about a dog that doesn't generally bark? How do you even get them to first bark?
My GSD doesn't bark at all either. I'm really happy about it. She's a rescue and seems to be content and happy too
Great video.goin to try and get our Mali to do this.
Have a good one.🙂👍✌🐕
what food to train the dogs you give them, I have a husky but he is very hard he does not eat much he only likes cookies
What if your dog's response to frustration it's to "settle" and wait? I can't get him frustrated enough to bark. He definitely has high drive though... So I'm confused and struggling to get a result.
Same here... Maximum frustration for him is to lay down. Were you able to make him bark?
I literally just barked/howled at my dog and they did it lol
Love your videos.
Well my GSD will continue to bark even when I tell him to lay down. It just make him little quieter. So im.guessing u tell the dog to lay down and wait for him to be quiet then give the reward?
What do you do if you have a dog that rarely barks?
My 4 month puppy rarely barks, she only does it sometimes when people walk towards us. Has anyone been in this situation and how did they get their dog to bark so they could mark the behavior?
Great tips...
Cheers Mate!
Great video!
Hi. Good video.. have a question, my dog barks when she is outside while I’m at work.. how do I work with that?
Love your videos man
so what to do if my dog never barks? what ways can i encourage him?
frustrating a dog is the best way to encourage barking... I'll be posting another video soon on how to teach barking!
My 1 year old Shepsky still barks in down
How can I stop my dogs from barking at those walking on the sidewalk right next to our yard?
Hey, @Robert Cabral, My german shepherd doesn't bark at all how can I get him to bark? he is 8 months old.
PLEASE HELP? No matter what I do my dog won’t bark for me. She never barks in prey drive the only time she barks is when she’s in defence drive when someone comes by my house. Will the marker still work when she’s in defence or is there another way?
Can you train him to be quiet not to go down??
I'm a new subscriber, I got my dog when she was already 8 months old. I've gotten her off leash trained, but my biggest issue is getting her to not jump on people when they enter the house (people she recognizes) is there a video on this page to help with that??
I only bring up the off leash trained because I've gotten her to be very well behaved and obedient on just about every other thing. Her jumping is my key issue that I'm unsure how to fix. I'd rather not go around and hear unorthodox fixes
Did you ever get your puppy to stop jumping on people?
Small question. We can train a dog 9 years old German shepherd female
Yes
@@RobertCabralDogs Totally. Any dog, any age can be trained.
hi, my German shepherd is 2 years old he doesn't bark unless someone raise his hand on me or when i tell him watch, i tried teasing him with toys and treats but did not work, any ideas please. Note: i got my dog when he was 1 year and half and they use to beat him now i have given him self confidence and i do train him daily to be strong, he gets scared almost from everything please help>
What should I do if my dog just whines instead of barking?
@robertcabral why do you give the treat from your mouth? Also Jimmy is already trained - what about showing us dogs that are not trained to stop barking on a Down command?
Hi what treat do you give? ^_^
That's a cheese stick if I'm not mistaken.
Jesus Aquino - he uses string cheese
Would you folks review our Dog Waste Bags?
I have a belgian malinois for like a week and he is 3 months old
He is really scared to come to others and even to me.
Your so right !! 🤣run the dog 10 miles for him to listen 🤣Seriously what is wrong with people!
What kind of cheese do you use?
Nice video but the title is a little misleading it doesn't really go into how to get a dog to bark. Overall not a bad video I'm also a dog trainer and I just come across this channel and am just checking out your video's.🙂👍✌
I seen him putting food/treat in the mouth then gives it. Its to mark "this is my food so I give it to you" or something?
How to stop him bark without making him down? Just to shut up sometimes?
Down
with our dog 'leave it' also work as stop barking as in stoo what you're doing. Down also works, but we implemented leave it with many other activities
My dogs are 7 months old, we live in the country, and they bark in the middle of the night..we know its due to animals in the woods, and their pen is on the edge by our house
It is labrador a very outstanding bread
Show this trg program on some active notorious type bread
Lab is next to human
My dog isn't a natural barker to show excitement. He only barks when someone's at the door. How can I teach my dog to bark on cue?
I tried to use the sound of a doorbell and attach the word "speak" in front of it, but he stopped responding to the doorbell when he realized nobody was at the door.
This made me laugh. Sorry.😂
What breed is Jimmy?
Jimi is a Labrador Retriever!
My dog runs to the edge of the yard, and barks at nothing, especially all night. He runs away if I try and get to close or put a leash on. He's too smart for his own good. He runs back and forward avoid us while continuously barking. It's like he is doing it to annoy us on purpose.
He’s training you well, it seems
Your dog is a good human trainer. Making his humans play chase
My dog knows how to bark on command. I tried to make my dog down and bark.
Guilty... bike rides for chilling the dog.
👏🏻
Why does he put the treat in his mouth and then spit it to the dog?
I think it's so the dog looks at his mouth, which is where the treat is coming from. He wants the dog to have that eye-to-eye connection with his face, so he pays attention to him.
How do I get my dog to sit a d down without luring him into that position
Luring is the only method without forcing. Why not lure?
With my black lab I would stare at him and tell him to bark. And I would bark. Now that he’s been doing it for so long all I have to do is stare at him and mouth the words without saying them. And he’ll bark.
Great content but I've never seen a human spit a treat into the dogs mouth before
