Kathy here - first they are from Macon, Ga., about 25 minutes from my hometown. I met Greg when I was 14 when they were playing a concert at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Ga. Greg is the one singing, his brother Duane is the guitar player who plays the slide guitar, and Dickie Betts is the other lead up front with Duane. All of Georgia wept when Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident, and we lost Greg about 3 years ago. Their catalog of music is awesome. Check out Midnight Rider. Classic Song.
Still considered by many the greatest live concert ever, and yes, it was 50 years ago. Tom Dowd was the engineer who 'miked' the Band for those concerts, and he was years ahead of his time with sound. And then there's the Brothers; my all-time favorite band. Original lineup was incredible.
First time I heard this band, I immediately went to the record store and bought their album. Their music changed me, for the better. 50 years later, I still dig this band.
I listened to the Allmans many times because they were based about an hour from I lived. Duane Allman, the slide guitarist, founded the band and was the father of Southern Rock, ie. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker and others. He died less than a year after this was recorded in a motorcycle accident. That was his younger brother Greg on vocals. You can't go wrong by these guys.
Welcome to the church of The Allman Brothers Band, where you get baptized in the blood of the best southern rock to ever exist! Try Whipping Post next!
This is classic Allman Brothers. Gregg's voice is so cool and the guitars, drums etc. are spot on. This show and entire album is fantastic. Thanks so much guys for your comments and reaction. Miss you both💞
My ex-father-in-law lived next door to them in Macon, Georgia. He and Duane were best friends. Shortly after this performance in ‘71, Duane was killed. Doug stayed friends with Gregg Allman for a long time. My ex-husband is named after Duane Allman. The great ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND !!!! WOW ! Duanes slide is infallible !!!!!! STATEBORO BLUES (LIVE ) 1971 FILLMORE EAST !!!!! Hear some great slide guitar my friend ! It's cracking !!!!
You'll never go wrong with The Allman Brothers. "That sound" is Southern Rock. It's a mixture of rock and blues. (We Southerners may love a lot of music, but the Blues is always running through it!)
Guys, the album this song is on is regarded by many as the greatest live rock album ever recorded. The Allman Brothers are a legendary live performance band out of Macon, Georgia. Duane Allman, the slide guitarist, was rated the 2nd best rock guitarist ever by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011. Jimi Hendrix was first.
Sorry... 'Live At Fillmore East' is, as you're referring to, considered by many to be the 'greatest' live album... However- ONE WAY OUT appears on the 'Eat A Peach' album...
One of the most talented bands ever. No strobes or lazer lights. Just pure bluesy rock and roll. If you go down this rabbit hole hang on. It'll be a hell've a ride.
Southbound and Statesboro Blues should be next. Soul Shine is another good one. My favorite band of all time. I was lucky enough to see these guys four or five times in late sixties and early seventies before Duane died. Duane was an amazing guitarist, so good he was voted #2 best guitarist of all time at one time but is now ranked 10th or 11th. The solo and intro into to “Layla” that a lot people have always thought Eric Clapton did was actually Duane Allman. Clapton once said Duane “ was the musical brother that I never had but wished I did.”
One of Georgia’s greatest bands. The Allman Brothers invented southern rock and mixed blues, rock, gospel, and a little country to come up with this sound. Perfection.
Greg Allman, the singer and Organist, was married for a while to Cher! The song 'Freebird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd was written for Duane Allman after his death in a motorcycle accident.
Before guitarist Duane Allman & bassist Berry Oakley were both killed in seperate motorcycle accidents roughly a year and just a few blocks apart from one another in Macon, Georgia, there wasn't a more technically proficient band at every instrument that was better live than you could find than the Allman Brothers Band. They were fronted by singer/keyboardist Greg Allman, the younger brother of Duane, who even today remains arguably the greatest WHITE blues singer ever. I would also strongly argue a more formidable twin guitar assault hasn't before or since been heard then the days of when the band recorded this album at the Filmore with Duane "Skydog" Allman & Forest Richard "Dickey" Betts both on guitar with both able to go off on long solo tangents in different directions for 20 or 30 minutes at a time, and then just as quickly round it all up and come right back together to give the song that big Allman Brothers Band finish. These guys are/were mega-talented, timeless, and for my money they were as good as it came live among bands from the classic rock era.
Now we're cooking! This band is an American Treasure. Their album Live At The Fillmore East is one of the greatest albums ever made. They were the originators of what become Southern Rock.
Two of these guys were actual brothers. Duane and Gregg . Duane (guitarist) passed away a long time ago in a motorcycle accident. Gregg (the singer) passed away about four years ago. What a loss it was when he passed. Their concerts were awesome( I saw them a few times ). You should really check out more of their music. They are fantastic! Some suggestions would be Whipping Post, Midnight Rider, and Soul Shine just to name a few. You won’t be disappointed !!
Duane and Gregg Allman were the soundtrack to oh so many of our lives back in the day. they created their own genre that pulled all the best elements of music together to form southern rock as we've all grown to no and love!!! you have finally reached the mountain top so keep climbing you just might get to the summit.....................
Sadly, the "main" lead guitarist (they had two lead guitarists and two drummers) Duane Allman, died in a motorcycle accident not long after this show. Then one year later, the bassist, Berry Oakley, died in the same manner, in almost the same exact stop. Yes, gotta do Whipping Post next; either studio version or live at Fillmore East.
The blonde singer and blonde guitar player are brothers Greg and Duane Allman. This is a VERY deep hole to fall into. Try Whipping Post and Soulshine, as well as (It's Not My) Cross To Bear.

When Duane Allman died, he was killed by a peach truck. Hence the name of the album Eat A Peach. My Husband and I loved this band, and our sons grew up listing to them! We still get together and listen to them on vinyl! We call that family bonding!!!
3:25 That bit where you're so engaged listening to the guitar singing along that, just for a second, you wonder why the guitar can keep going without pausing to breathe.
Yes, I totally agree. I was in my mid twenties in the 70's . Straight out of the Vietnam war and full of energy and ready to rock! I even played in a few local rock bands for s few years until my wife said either me or the band. Music has never been the same since. What an era to be alive!
People have already started telling you the back story. I've got so much to say that I'm just gonna say that you need to do more. You gotta go down the rabbit hole! This is the stuff right here bros!
One of Southern rock's greatest bands, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, ZZTop and even Outlaws. Listen Whipping Post: Truly Sublime. Thank you guys.
guys great reaction... whipping post , in memory of elizabeth reed , southbound , you don't love me are all time southern rock classics... trust me u won't be disappointed
"In memory of Elizabeth Reed" At Fillmore East as well. That way you get the long version with the extended guitar playing you like so much with a live audience.
Southern Rock is the best, and the Allman Brothers were top 5 in my opinion! Whipping Post, Rambling Man, Jessica, Midnight Rider I didn't see a lot of requests for "Sweet Melissa" (my daughters name, because of this song). Definitely not the ordinary vibe that you would expect from the Allman Brothers but an unbelievable beautiful song. Does this type of music bring you back to your reaction to Lynyrd Skynyrd? They were all playing that beautiful southern rock that I believe was some of the best music in that era. Another great song that is southern rock is "Green Grass and High Tides" by the Outlaws. Try it out! (Southern) Rock On!!
Being from and living all around New Orleans I grew up listening to the Allman Brothers ever since they first came out. I have seen them live so many times, and Gregg`s solo shows too. There`s nothing like an Allman Brothers concert ! Welcome to what`s known as "Southern Rock" !!!
it is pure joy to watch as those 'sweet moments' hit the two of you for the first time. Yes we were lucky. I consider music to be one of best results of/reasons for evolution and the music from that era the best reason for me to have existed. I see the exit signs up ahead and if the 'life/before your eyes' thing is real then I'm gonna get to hear a lot of great fkn music on the way out...
Duane Allman is the blond and Dickey Betts the other guitarist. These guys were so good at playing off each other it was hypnotic to watch. It was easy to pick them out because Duane’s sound was just full and gritty sounding and Dickeys was clean and crisp....so good together. The keyboard and singer is Greg Allman, Duane’s brother.
Great song choice guys - one of their best ! Not sure if you got the story right though : basically a guy is in bed upstairs with a lover as some guy entered downstairs. He’s not sure if it’s her “old man” (boyfriend) and the only escape is through the door on the first floor. Maybe it’s time to hide in the closet for this loverboy !
Gotta check out Whipping Post! But you also gotta check out the original version of this tune One Way Out by Elmore James (King Of The Slide Guitar) who influenced great blues guitarists like SRV, Clapton, Duane Allman, Peter Green, Hound Dog Taylor, & many others.
Their Live at the Fillmore East album is considered one of the best live albums ever. Done Somebody Wrong - The Allman Brother Band Live at Fillmore East - UA-cam
Allman Brothers were so big back then. Their shows would go on for hours and they would just jam and ‘’cook’. Sooo good. You must check out Stand Back. It’s just a jammin’ good song. Of course there are just sooo many. Whippin’ Post (you think you love Greg Allman’s voice on this song?) wait till you hear this one. Blue Sky is a classic summertime vibe. Dive in!
The band from Georgia... Geogia USA that is. Whipping Post from the same concert is a must. Jessica is great instrumental. Btw Duane also played with Eric Clapton.
One of the more memorable mistakes in live album history happens at 3:19 of the song, 4:18 of your video, when Berry Oakley (the bass player) comes in a beat early after the last slide solo. That throws off everything, but only for a couple of moments until Butch Trucks (one of the drummers) brings everyone back on beat with his powerful snare drum hits. Generations of guitar players (including me!) drove themselves crazy trying to count the beat through that stretch
Lots of great suggestions and early history of the ABBAND The Allman Brothers continued until 2014, the final line-up with from 1999 had Derek Trucks &Warren Haynes on lead guitars and Otiel Burbridge on bass. Hopefully I spark a hit, and suggest you check out from Gregg Allman and All my Friends concert The Allman Brothers Band. (Whipping Post) which will be highly suggested, but this live version is crystal clear and NOT to be missed. EPIC..and strap in and hydrate. GOOD LUCK. .PEACE
Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band) was once asked what happened to Southern Rock. He said "We just woke up one day and it was gone." It may be gone, but it will never die.
Allman Brothers from Jacksonville FL created “Southern Rock!” Eric Clapton was a big fan of lead guitarist Duane Allman. Please Watch live versions of “Whipping Post” and “Statesboro Blues”
Thanks for finally getting to this band guys.. One of my favorites.. This band spans decades. In the later years they had Derek Trucks on guitar and I gotta say he is probably the best living guitarist we got these days. Check out Elizabeth Reed with Trucks on guitar at the Cross Roads Blues fest. Eric Clapton joins the Allman's on guitar. It's epic.. ua-cam.com/video/fZ7ol5ISxTM/v-deo.html
Ramblin’ Man, Midnight Rider, Blue Sky, Statesboro Blues are all great songs by The Allman Brothers Band! Whipping Post is mandatory. Since you’ve seen them live with this video, it’s your choice on live or studio. Enjoyed the reaction! ☮️🖤🤟
Now you've discovered another incredible group with so much more fantastic music to react to. They were a mix of soul, blues and rock. You can't go wrong with "Whipping Post", "Jessica", "Blue Sky", "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", and "Statesboro Blues" to name a few. I saw them at the Fillmore 2 years before this concert when they were second billing to BST and they were great.
You guys should just listen to the album “LiVE AT FILLMORE EAST” that same concert. It considered one the the greatest live albums ever recorded. Well worth the listen!
Finally you got into the brothers. Whipping Post, Stormy Monday, Stateboro Blues, Blue Sky, Not My Cross to Bear, Dreams. They were the best Southern rock band. Sadly both are dead. Eat A Peach & Live at Fillmore East are epic albums.
The live at the Fillmore East Album you must check out "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"..It's a 13 min. Instrumental, but don't let that scare you..You will be sorry it ever ends..Trust me..I'm a 64 year old ABB fan who first saw them live when I was 14..Just put the Do Not Disturb sign out, throw on your headphones, turn the volume to just before it becomes uncomfortable, close your eyes, and let them do the rest..It will blow your mind!..It is that good.
Gregg Allman (Keyboards - Lead Vocals Duane Allman Lead/Slide Guitar) are brothers who started the band. Very unigue with 2 drummers. Many great songs you guys have to keep going with the Allman Brothers. Ramblin Man, Blu Skys, Jessica, Melissa, Soul Shine... etc..
Guys you gotta check out their best song, Dreams. Its what the kids call "a vibe". Also, Live at Philmore East is considered one of the greatest live albums ever made. And two of the band members actually are brothers - Duane and Gregg Allman.
First of all, Butch Trucks, the drummer before he passed away's nephew played with the band on guitar from the age 9 to 19. You will see him in other videos with really long straight hair and he nearly always plays the slide because his hands were too small too play without when he was learning how to play. Another thing about the Allman Brothers is that the have mastered the art of playing dual synchronized lead guitars, which gives them a very distinct sound.
The voice you love belongs to Gregg Allman , the guitarist with the first solo is the late great Duane Allman. Gregg is widely considered the best white Blues singer he also plays the keyboards. Duane is the God father fthe modern electric slide guitar. The ABB were considered the best jam band ever. Their concerts could last anywhere from 2-4 hrs.. Another thing is they never played the same song the same way twice. So you could go to a concert early in the day of festival then go to a show that same night and not here the same songs or the same song would be played so differently that it's a new song.
The music I grew up listening to ♥️ Along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, The Outlaws, Black Oak Arkansas, Charlie Daniels Band & Molly Hatchet just to name a few!! The 1970’s were amazing musically & I feel privileged to have grown up during that era ♥️♥️
The video is not the video of them playing this song. Someone put together clips to make it look like it, but if you watch closely you can tell the sound and video don't go together. It's more there to give you a feel for seeing them play live. Just about everything they played on their first four albums was great, as well as the live album. The first two from their debut album, 'Don't Want You No More'/ 'It's Not My Cross To Bear', are incredible. They're two different songs, but connected and HAVE to be played together. Others you may not have done that are well worth checking out - Black Hearted Woman, Every Hungry Woman, Dreams, Ain't Wastin' Time No More, Trouble No More, Southbound, Statesboro Blues. All fantastic songs.
This was 2 nights called "Live at the Fillmore" and it was all shot in black and white. Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh and others were there just to wach them. Eric sighned Duane to play the "slide" guitar on Layla .
One of the greatest bands ever, and pioneers of Southern Rock. Brothers are Greg Allman on Organ and Duane Allman on slide guitar. More clips from this concert please, Whipping Post next please. They have hundreds of great songs. Midnight Rider, Sweet Melissa, In memory of Elizabeth Reed, Soulshine...I could keep typing for awhile! Also, Duane played with Clapton in Derek and the Dominos. That's him on slide in Layla. ✌️
I was raised on this music! Good ole southern rock ❤❤❤

They were the originators of the blend of Country, Blues, Gospel, and Jazz, that became known as Southern Rock.
Lots of great suggestions and early history of the ABBAND
The Allman Brothers continued until 2014, the final line-up with from 1999 had Derek Trucks &Warren Haynes on lead guitars and Otiel Burbridge on bass. Hopefully I spark a hit, and suggest you check out from Gregg Allman and All my Friends concert The Allman Brothers Band. (Whipping Post) which will be highly suggested, but this live version is crystal clear and NOT to be missed. EPIC..and strap in and hydrate. GOOD LUCK. .PEACE
Some kick ass biker party music back in the day. ❤️
Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band) was once asked what happened to Southern Rock. He said "We just woke up one day and it was gone."
It may be gone, but it will never die.
Allman Brothers from Jacksonville FL created “Southern Rock!” Eric Clapton was a big fan of lead guitarist Duane Allman. Please Watch live versions of “Whipping Post” and “Statesboro Blues”
Check out You Don’t Love Me from their Fillmore East Album…..if you think you can handle it
Your gonna need to put your seatbelts on ✌️
Dwayne was a master guitarist and I love slide! I was 13 in 1970. The music on the radio that decade was INsane.
You HAVE to check out their AMAZING instrumental “Jessica”. Incredible
Yes, the lead guitarist and the vocalist, Duane All.an and Gregg Allman are real brothers. They started the band
Live at the Fillmore East is their best. Probably the best live album ever made.
The original version by Elmore James is worth a listen
