  • My Review for Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Nintendo Switch and my leading candidate for GotY 2023.TLDR: Go Buy this game
    Intro - I Was Wrong about Mario Wonder: 0:00-3:46
    Mario Wonder Gameplay: 3:46-13:53
    Mario Wonder Story/Plot: 13:53-16:28
    Mario Wonder OST/Soundtrack: 16:28-20:03
    Graphics & Performance: 20:03-21:29
    Modern Gaming RANT: 21:29-27:44
    Conclusion - Mario Wonder Game of the Year 2023: 27:44-30:57
    Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a game that truly surprised me from start to finish.As someone that typically hates 2D & 3D platformers I went into this game with 0 eexpectations of enjoying it and I am happy to say I could not have been more wrong about that. Mario Wonder is truly a "gamer's game" in that it prioritizes gameplay and fun over everything else, and paired with some of the greatest level design I have ever seen in the genre and industry, Mario Wonder is definitely an experience anyone who enjoys video games should definitely experience. Compared to most modern AAA Gaming releases like Spider-Man 2 on PS5 or Starfield on Xbox Series X, Mario Wonder is exactly what someone like myself who find himself thinking "Modern Gaming is Dead" or "Modern Gaming Sucks" needed to once again spark some interest in video games. The only complaint I really have is that the Mario Wonder OST or Soundtrack is a little lackluster compared to other Mainline Mario Games but if that is my only complaint with a game in this current video game industry, you know this is truly something special.

They didn't make it child friendly and I think that's the only reason it flopped. They tried to fix this when they re-released it on the Switch by adding Easy Mode Funky Kong, but by then it was just too late, and Funky being the "easy" pick was flawed in two ways. First, he's a side character hardly anybody knows. Second, they didn't really give the player any indications that Funky is the way to go if you're new.

    • @Flamestar320
      @Flamestar320 6 місяців тому +6

      @SourClout I highly agree! However, with both of the games being $60, it's debatable if they're worth the price, if you're a one-and-done type of gamer. Particularly, _Sonic Superstars._
      I believe it's a fun game, but the main story is not much longer than something like _Sonic Mania,_ which is only $20.
      As far as extra content goes, there is a new scenario that unlocks after beating the main story once, where you get to play as a new character from the story, Trip The Sungazer. However, it's just a much harder version of all of the levels, which might feel like a cheap way to justify the price to some. Especially since some of the levels from the first run-through are already pretty challenging.
      There is also a battle mode that up to 4 people can play locally and up to 8 people online, which is neat. Unfortunately, while you can play the main story with co-op, it's local only. And the co-op for the main story, from what I've heard and seen from others, it's pretty unpolished.

    • @Flamestar320
      @Flamestar320 6 місяців тому +1

      @kyler247 I know. I'm just saying that as someone who prefers playing games that are shorter overall but are easily replayable, I understand that there are a lot of people who have higher expectations for $60 games to have more base content.
      Me, personally, I feel I'm getting my money's worth out of both _Super Mario Bros. Wonder_ and _Sonic Superstars._ But at least in Sonic's case, I've seen a lot of fan backlash from it being a $60 classic-styled Sonic game. I understand it. Even I feel like it could've been $40 or so, and it would've likely sold much better. It's on sale right now, so more people will probably be willing to try it out. I hope they will, because _Sonic Superstars_ is a genuinely fun game, in my opinion.

    I actually find the drill to be my favorite powerup for 2 reasons
    1. While using the drill you can jump and hit enemies above you and below you effectively for most enemies your hurt box is now just on your side the drill even protects against enemy projectiles like hammers from hammer bros
    2. The ability to burrow into both the ceiling and the ground opens lots of pathways in several stages you just have to be careful about accidentally unburtowing yourself in the wrong spot. (You will hit enemies at the spot you unburrow as well)
    My gripe with the drill is you cant smash multiple bricks with a single jump but i guess thats part of the elephant powerup so it makes sense why the drill cant do it too.
    One other thing is when you groundpound with the drill you put your drill hat on your bum turning you into a lethal projectile to anything below you and this lets you sefeat spiked enemies.

    Hey Griffin, it’s funny you say this because I feel the same way man. I’m in my mid 20’s and haven’t taken Nintendo seriously in years, just completely ignored them. Bought myself a Switch last November for the hell of it and was blown away by how fun the games were and that they were fully complete and gameplay focused over anything else. I did the same exact thing, I went back to my old 360 games and even dusted off my old Gamecube this summer and have been mostly playing 15-20 year old games now. I don’t really care if this comes across as sexist because it’s true - I noticed a huge shift in the quality of games around 2013 when women started taking over the lead positions of developers. It’s all about how a game’s story makes the player feel now instead of how the game actually plays. As a result they’re basically interactive emotional dramas instead of just a fun game that keeps you engaged. Gameplay has taken the back burner for a political or moral message, and like film, if there’s a male hero - he has to take the backseat to the strong independent female who replaces him and makes him look like an idiot. It just sucks man and it’s annoying to see a hobby basically get hijacked by political activists.

      @Soup-man Yeah I like some story heavy games like MGS and Yakuza. Difference between them and Sony games is that when you're playing them they still feel like video games. Sony games when cutscenes aren't playing its either walking forward looking at pretty gwaficks, solving basic as shit puzzles and only like 30% at the most feels like an actual game.

      It's relative. Story is important for say, a Spiderman game, or an AC game, or a GoW game or Resident Evil, etc. In that regard, you just need to know how to tell a good story while prioritizing gameplay's fun factor. But for something like Mario or Forza or something, yea story isn't as important. Just depends on the type of game. Bc imagine GoW 3, with how badass it is, with shitty story telling. It'd be considered a much worse game bc at the end of the day, it is a single player game, and story is important there.

    As a mario fan, im glad ur enjoying a game that doesn't feel generic or boring. Ur positives on this game are pretty much accurate to what mario wonder is and I love how u stated that the developers prioritized on our fun and how the game respects us as a player. However I would like for u to reconsider one of ur complaints. The drill mushroom is fine, u can basically play the game without it. But for the bowser fight I dont think u should undermine it's value based on its difficulty. I mean sure the bowser jr fights are similar to the rest and dont require much but at least they tried to spice things up, but for the bowser fight I would argue it is the most unique bowser fight in any 2D mario game. I mean its a literal concert with rock music in the background and goombas and koopas jumping to the rhythm. U'll never see that kind of boss in any 2d mario game. I kindly suggest u try the final boss and play the level with loud music, maybe ull have second thoughts about it. Or not its up to u.

    The gaming industry seems to be flooded with people who REALLY wanted to make movies/TV, but they suck at it, so they never get any screenplays sold, and with the rise of easy game programming tools, a failed movie writer can turn that failed screenplay into a terrible game. A particular "hot take" I have is that the FMV cutscene is the WORST thing that has happened to video games. It paved the way for many of our current problems in gaming. When I saw the trailer for "Tell Me Why" I remember thinking something along the lines of "Why didn't they just try to make this a movie??"
    Also to note the MTX problem, I blame EA and FIFA 11 (or 12?)'s Ultimate Team, which made EA realize they can take Asian mobile gaming's worst trope and make it into a cash machine.

    Tears of the kingdom has a pretty good balance. It has some cinematic moments that make you care about the characters or to add spectacle, but not to the point where it just feels like an interactive movie. Heck most of the cutscenes are entirely optional if you have no interest in the storyline. But at any rate mario wonder was definitely a breath of fresh air. I wasn’t even particularly craving a new Mario game and then they casually drop the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World on us that completely reimagines what a 2D Mario can be.

    I'll admit... I am starting to feel the same way about modern gaming. Through out this year, I rarely got time to game and usually wake up earlier than usual just to find the time to game.
    The year this came out I played Ghost of Tsushima, God of War: Ragnarok, Resident Evil 4 and Spider-Man 2... some of these games I could barely finish, and it's because I was running low on patience by the game's filler escorts, cutscenes you can't skip, and repetition that just leaves me feeling bored enough to just check out.
    Then I played Super Mario Bros. Wonder the same time I got Spider-Man 2... and with this one, I played the whole thing till the end. This is a textbook definition of what a Video Game used to be, and I love it. I even got the Switch Online and played Yoshi's Island on SNES and was having so much fun with it to where I just want to keep playing it till the end. I keep seeing videos saying this video is trash... totally assuming it's from the people who prefer games like the ones I listed where it's less of a game and more of an interactive movie.
