I am delightfully surprised at how much I'm enjoying their online implementation. The ghosts running around but are actual people playing was something I did not expect to like. I see a lot of comparisons of SMBW with Super Mario World. I would honestly say if there are any comparisons to previous Mario games then it would be with Super Mario Land 2, one of the most underrated games in the entire franchise. There was an incredible level of creativity and off the wall wackiness in Land 2 that it at times didn’t feel like a Mario game and SMBW honestly feels like that.

Mario wonder is not bad at all but super mario world is on another level. The controls are more precise than Wonder and it was made over 20 years ago...super mario world overall is just a better game with level design, powerups, everything.
I will never forget the way I felt when I had Super Mario World in front of me for the first time. The year was 1992. Few, if any, games made me feel something like that ever again.
I'd say Yoshi's Island is also up there as one of the best. I recently played through it for the first time and I was blown away by its creativity, art style, music, clever level design and secrets all around the worlds. The gameplay is so good it wipes the floor with most modern games.

My favorite part about original super mario world soundtrack (and why I think it's so memorable ) is that the melody is the same for every song, the entire soundtrack is a theme and variations
Still happy there's a developer out there that makes a great singleplayer game on the first try that's complete for it's physical copy and you aren't waiting for updates for features that should have been in to begin with, that you won't have on the original copy when the servers shut down.
i just can't put this game down. it's so ridiculously fun. for a while there, i didn't really "get" 2D mario. i played NSMB2 and the Maker games and had fun with them, but i didn't think too much of them (especially since i was way more of a sonic person at the time) but now i get it. i understand why people fell in love with games like SMB3 and super mario world back in the day.
I personally like the idea of removing both timers and score counts from the levels. I just wish we had the option to add these things in the game settings, for the hardcore players that prefer to have them on.
@@triple-d2640That is true, but they could have gone the other way around and had saved individual level scores. Then you could go for high scores, compete with friends on leaderboards etc.
I just snagged myself a physical copy, something I've been trying to do for a while now, I've got tons of storage on my Switch, but man I really appreciate the physical copies so much, and I can't wait to experience it myself. Thanks for not spoiling the game, I can't wait!
For me the best of Mario was SMB3 ^^; I loved the way the map was done, the minigames, the consistency in the gameplay and the difficulty slope. I just remember SMW was beautiful but not that challenging (pretty unpopular opinion I think), even to have the 100 (or 101 I don't remember, I think there was a trick) stars when I played it at the time it went out. It was the time I began the disinterest for SMB and switching to other platformers. The ones on Gameboy (and Wario land) were great though.
I remember playing Super Mario World quite some time later and wondered what the all the fuss was about. It just made me want to boot up Super Mario Bros 3 instead.
There are definitely more than 5 worlds. At the point I'm at there is W1-W6 plus Petal Isle and Special World. So there are at least 8 and possibly more once I collect enough 10 coins and wonder seeds
For what it's worth, the first world track that featured in the trailer has been buzzing around in my head since June. I know that's partially a product of watching the trailer so many times in anticipation, but I would definitely consider that song to be on par with the most memorable Mario Bros. songs.
One thing I enjoyed a lot more than I expected was the online mode. Being able to see other players playing the same level in real time is cool, but you can give hints, save each other and even give power ups.
I don't get complaints about length - not just MVG but a couple of other reviews, too. 5-6 hours to complete and some time afterwards to 100% is basically what Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 (without a save system) took to beat without shortcuts, and both could be completed start to finish in a half hour with some secrets. I get wanting more of something great, I guess, but I don't have time to finish a huge campaign in a month so I can still remember what I was doing at the start. This seems like the perfect title for me.
The game is amazing, but too short. >a campaign Please, what is there to forget, you need to beat Bowser. I 100%'d the game before the official release date, there's no reason there couldn't be 3 more worlds. This trend of asking for *less* game, features etc is truly baffling.
@@centralintelligenceagency8811 I just don't want Nintendo to go down the "player engagement metrics" rabbit hole that caused Diablo IV and plenty of other modern games to waste my time. I have limited time to play, and I don't want to spend it all watching characters have pointless conversations to take the plot nowhere, waiting for animations that take forever, and mind-numbing inventory management. This and Sonic Superstars appear to be a breath of fresh air and I'm all for it. I guess I'd rather be left wanting more than have extra padding that takes away from the experience.
If you want a longer 2D Mario game go play the New Super Mario games. Those things were terrible, exactly what I'm talking about with padding that's just been shat out to get a game that was "long enough".
6 hours at 70€ is rough. You can have a masterpiece experience like Resident Evil 4 Remake at that price, but that game is twice as long and IMO more replayable. Wonder doesn´t have the massive budget of a Sony big budget AAA game and thus, should cost 40 bucks.
I sat down to try a few levels of Wonder and just mess around and see what it was all about and ended up playing for a few hours.... I haven't done that with a SMB game in a LONG time.
I would hold back on the length of the game statement. In SMW you also did not know about Star road and special road from just looking at the world map. So let's draw a conclusion at the end of the journey I would say 😅
Bought it as soon as I got off work lastnight. Been having a blast and it looks amazing on OLED Hearing you mention SM World was life. I’ve never had more fun with another Mario game as I did with that game. I can’t even say it’s because I was a kid at the time. The game itself is just timeless and the gameplay holds up perfectly more than 30 years later! The cocoa island levels and cocoa dungeon will forever be my favorite levels. And beating the SPECIAL levels and having the koopas turn into Mario’s was like the peak of video game secrets
The last Nintendo Direct showed the game has 7 worlds, not 5. And like every other 2d Mario game, there will be an 8th world, and for sure there will be hidden sub levels outside of the main worlds. Strange that you didn't notice what they showed in that Direct.
This game is amazing. I played Mario Brothers for the first time in 1986 and played this new Mario Brother in 2023. While the kid enjoyment is no longer there, this game is truly a masterpiece!!!! ❤
There are 6 main worlds, Petal Islands counts as a world, Boswers Castle is a world with its own levels, then theres the special world. This game throws you off by making you tihnk there's not a lot, but there's actually 151 stages in the files.
Game music is extremely important, and I feel like a lot of companies are unfortunately just trying to get the cheapest work possible nowadays. There are so many games that are carried by the music alone, and there are just as many experiences that are hindered by subpar music. It should be prioritized as highly as the gameplay, instead of cutting corners to try saving money in the budget.
Can you give me an example of two of games that are carried by music alone? Genuinely interested, as I usually stick to Nintendo games and, I really don't branch out much from that.
@@Markynava777 I don't know of any games that I have ever played _just_ for the music, but there are several where I might be hit with a nostalgia wave that makes me want to replay it, just from hearing or thinking of one of the themes. MechWarrior 2, Starcraft, Wacky Wheels, Mega Man 2, Hocus Pocus, the Myst series, Diablo, WarCraft II, Gremlins 2 for Game Boy (of all things..), any of the Super Mario games from NES / GB / SNES, Parasite Eve, any Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger ....

I really like the first badge with the hat letting you slow your fall speed. Reminds me of Super Mario Bros. 2 when you play as Peach. I am playing as Daisy and I really like her costume and it's a really fun game.
Absolutely love this game so far. It's just pure joy and fun. Didn't care either for Super Mario Bros U, so much so that I never even bothered to finish it. But this new game just instantly clicked. From the very first level you can see the amount of love that was put in. It just burst with imagination, the controls are snappier than ever in the 2D Mario franchise and I'm always looking forward to the next level just to see what else the team had up their sleeves, as well as what the next wonder effect is going to be. It's the first 2D Mario in a long time that actually feels like a new game...and what a game!
It's extremly easy. There are no stakes. Toddlers could finish most of the levels. What is the art direction worth when you can finish most of the game half-asleep?
I really didn’t know what to expect with this game but yea, it’s a pleasant and refreshing breath of air for Mario. I kinda feel like a kid again while playing and I don’t remember any game lately that’s given that feeling to me, personally. The wonder seed gimmick makes levels unique. I LOVE THE MUSICAL BITS, so creative.
Nintendo could easily keep the Switch alive for another 10 years. It’s about the games, not the graphics. Especially the way Nintendo releases games that are so well polished.
What I love about the game is how « exploration » can be sooo worthwhile. Yesterday I was playing with my brother so we started a new save and he found one of the pipe that would go down when you step on it in the Spikes level would actually still sink, I never even thought about that I was just thinking about grabing the coin and I thought the pipe was stuck, and when we did that there was the wonder flower and a nice parade. The talking flowers are also pretty funny, tho we play in french so the voice isn't the same but it's fun. So yeah, it's just a great game. I also love the optional but difficult levels. I do feel like it's probably the best 2D Mario that they ever made.
I'm loving the game. It has that special Nintendo Magic, I found myself smiling and laughing at the little details. I can't help but imagine others feeling the same. I'm taking my time and replaying levels with Yoshi (restarting if I get hit for extra fun)!
I agree! I grew up playing Mario World and love that game. Other Mario games have been fun and Mario deluxe comes close but Mario Wonder is on par with World. I have played very little of this as single player as my two kiddos 4 and 7 and partner all have been playing through and my goodness it has been a great game to play and the mechanic also encourages you to work together as there is kind of a captain of the screen and then if that captain dies another person takes on that role. It’s a way better mechanic than deluxe where you’re constantly jumping on each others heads and making each other fall into pits. I do wish you could turn off yoshi riding though. Incredible game! So creatively expansive! That says a lot for a 2-d game. I love the animation of mario going through a side tube and the hat falling off and a hand reaches back out to pull the hat along. So many wonderful details!
A bit odd to me that you mentioned there are only 5 worlds in this game and that the time it takes to beat the entire game wouldn’t even reach double digit category in hours. Could’ve sworn there was way more content then that, but otherwise very solid review. 👍
He was quite a bit off with the time estimation. There are 6 'normal' worlds, 7 including petal Isles. And then there's Special World, making it 8 in total.
The badges represent the movement abilities of the characters from previous iterations. The hover jump - Luigi Speed dash - Toad Slow fall - (arguably closest to Peach) etc... Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toads, Daisy all play the same and have the same physics, so it is purely cosmetic. The badge is what determines the movement ability. Yoshis and Nabbit have couple of the badge abilities naturally and they don't take damage, so they can be used if you are truly stuck, though for some of the tougher platforming sections where you can fall, it doesn't make a huge difference. Poke around on the world map, there are a few secrets there :P I think the stages are very well tuned such that no badge in particular is required for something. Some areas are easier to get to with the appropriate badge, but overall, nothing I've seen so far absolutely requires a badge. I've only used the swimming badge twice, once in first water level and a second time for the Wiggler race. The Expert Badges can add a bit of spice to add extra challenge to getting through a level. The online mode is great. The level of cooperation is heart warming. If you die, you turn in to a ghost and can rez if you touch another player or their standee sign. Not having a score or timer makes much more sense when you realize you can help others just by standing at the edge of a difficult section and jump back and potentially rescue them. There's a level of beautiful async and anonymous cooperation that happens. It is immensely gratifying to see the little notification that my well-placed standee rescued other players.
Hmmm, it looks fun but I'll wait a few months. The word masterpiece was thrown around for TOTK when that released, but it was incredibly dissapointing to me after loving BOTW so much. Felt like I got burnt by that one so I'm more cautious about believing UA-camr hype. Also, I appreciate you have to get your videos out fast but can you really say it's as good as SMW after only 4 hours of playtime? The 'good' graphic when you kill an enemy is already a bit of a turn off for me. I'll see what people are saying in a few months when the hype has worn off and decide then.
The online component is something people shouldnt miss out on in this game. Playing Mario solo, with others playing along with you is really a "wonderful" time. Its a mechanic that i imagine was inspired by From Soft games and Mario Maker, that i want in more games
@claudiacanales2662 the little interactions you can have with other players is just a pure experience that really adds to the whimsical fun this game exudes. If you like more challenge, you can shut online off, or ignore the standees that revive you too.
@claudiacanales2662 they are little sign posts that look like the playable characters, which you and other players can set down in levels. When you play online and other players are in the level with you, or if someone left a Standee nearby and you end up dying to an obstacle you become a ghost, then your ghost can be controlled to touch a standee or another player and you will be revived. Its designed to make the game easier and let players interact with each other
Never had an snes, before my time. But I do hold smw very near and dear to my heart. Very first game I ever emulated. This game's tight controls remind me soooo much of that game and I love it!
Mainline Mario kinda peaked for me at Super Mario Bros. 3. I just wasn't ever able to capture that same feeling with any of the later ones. Watching this brings it all back for me.
I feel differently about the music. There are some tracks that just instantly put a smile on my face and are already stuck in my head just from a couple days playing. Particularly the wonder effect song that plays when you turn into the goo creature. And the badge challenge theme. I think given a little time there will be some tracks from this game becoming classics.
i was honestly blown away, i remember playing New Super Mario Bros 2 and it was just a terrible game with 0 inovation i thought the 2d series was done for however now they went off and went above expectations with this one and actually added new cool stuff not done before, I had been thinking they could add such cool stuff like this to the series for quite some time now, and the mission close to the start of the game where all the enemies and atuff start singing and dancing i had a smile on my face the entire level which has never happened to me before playing a game.
The game is absolutely not 6 hours long. Well, I guess it may be if you actively try to play the least levels possible, but a standard playthrough will probably be around 9 to 12 hours. The first worlds are shorter than the lasts, and there is actualy more than 5 worlds (who would have known). Playing through every single level would probably take around 16 hours, and 100%ing the game around 25 hours.
A Masterpiece? ...Really? 'The music isn't memorable' & 'Too short' 'It's polished with No patches' Are people going to be talking about it in 30 years? FINALLY evolving the art style with a few new mechanicsand shouting 'masterpiece' isn't as bad as Sonic fans screaming the same thing over the new half-baked, broken Sonic frontiers but its heading in that direction. I love some of their games. SMW is my favorite too, but Nintendo can be fairly anti consumer, they're totally backwards when it comes to content creators, their approach to backwards compatibility and switch online is a joke. Its extortionate. Is the game good? Great even? Maybe. Sure why not. But masterpiece just means nothing when you hurl it around like this for a slightly creative, polished platformer.
As someone who used to pursue world records on various 2D Mario titles, this game is so new yet familiar. As a dad trying to share my love for Mario with my daughter, I am completely floored at how amazing they made the multiplayer experience. Even if I do all the heavy lifting, we both high five after every level because we both feel like we beat it. This game is absolute perfection to me.
You are a person to my hart, mvg missed this , looking at his short game statement, the badges can be helpfull achieving these goals, at the level overview, there is a subtle green stamp behind the wonderseeds, indicating all exits are found.
I finished it 4 days ago and it was a fantastic experience (for the most part). The first thing I noticed was how tight the controls feel compared to any of the New Super Mario Bros. games. The controls on those games felt so slippery and took so long to get momentum that they were completely unplayable for me, I'm not even kidding. As an old school Super Mario player I felt right at home with this one. I also immediately noticed the absence of memorable music, but the OST is... well... bad, but not THAT bad. The Wonder Flower segments are probably what I enjoyed the most, it's totally like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Perhaps the main problem that I found is the difficulty, it's just too easy, but it's definitely fun. EDIT: Oh, yeah... The talking flowers were definitely annoying and unnecessary. Seriously, who came up with that stupid idea?
@@abaque24 Well, to be fair, I remember there is this part where you are falling all of a sudden, and one of the flowers is falling with you, while screaming "Aaaahhh!". THAT made me chuckle, I have to admit. xD
I've been playing it for about a week now on PC and my Switch copy arrived today. I'm up to World 3 and I'm loving it. The secret world has been BRUTAL. I can't even get past the first level. Also, mario wonder's enemies are really nice, and most of the time I fell pretty bad beating them. The little mummy guy with wraps that you defeating it by unwrapping them made wanting to do a pacifist run of the game.
I think it’s thematically weird to have only one transformation, and the elephant just sticks out too much. They could have simply have Mole Mario instead of the drill hat or remove elephant Mario and make him Morph into Wario or a big Muscular Mario that sucks water up his cheeks. This is my only complaint because it otherwise looks great but these are weird design choices if they have only one animal transformation if I don’t count wonder flower morphs. Other Mario games all had a few different animal types so it’s just weird.
Doesn't look fun. It looks too easy. as if there is no challenge but more of an experience type game. I would say Yoshi games are like that and theya re fun...but this seems to have the mechanics of the New Super Mario Bros or whatever its called and its too slow feeling. I like SMW and wish they wold get back to making that kind of game.
Nintendo was always the trendsetter in graphics and gameplay, not the follower, especially with Mario games... starting with the "New" series, Nintendo lost its edge. Best example today is the lazy revamp of SMRPG about to be released or the "3D All Stars" reissues... Nintendo was never that sloppy. Of course the well runs dry eventually but years had passed and they never tried anything new after the "New" series like they did with "Yoshi's Island" (technically the second SMW), for example.
@@michaelpeters78 It has enough unique level design to keep the game interesting as you go forward, and finding secret exits which is fun. If you are a veteran Mario player it won't be too tricky until the final final stage.

Agree, but a lot of people don't consider it a 2D "Mario" game.
Even if it is by technicality.
The variety of enemies in Wonder reminded me of Yoshi's Island. I love that game.

My favorite part about original super mario world soundtrack (and why I think it's so memorable ) is that the melody is the same for every song, the entire soundtrack is a theme and variations
Oh yes. And that's also the thing for Mario Wonder stages. The melody stays the same in most stages with different styles that match each world.
Still happy there's a developer out there that makes a great singleplayer game on the first try that's complete for it's physical copy and you aren't waiting for updates for features that should have been in to begin with, that you won't have on the original copy when the servers shut down.
i just can't put this game down. it's so ridiculously fun.
for a while there, i didn't really "get" 2D mario. i played NSMB2 and the Maker games and had fun with them, but i didn't think too much of them (especially since i was way more of a sonic person at the time)
but now i get it. i understand why people fell in love with games like SMB3 and super mario world back in the day.
Nintendo never fails when it comes to making masterpiece classics. They take their time crafting up a game with no deadlines.
I personally like the idea of removing both timers and score counts from the levels. I just wish we had the option to add these things in the game settings, for the hardcore players that prefer to have them on.
Score count had no purpose. Not even in the older games
I think have a score in every level added a lot more replayability if your trying to go for a score attack play through or something
@copingflower1909 a score attack is fun little addition to the game especially for a portable based 2d mario
Even if they do that the game is still too easy. It is nice and all but I like a little more challenge.
Me too, SMB3 was my first and favorite Mario game
SMB3 is easily my favorite. Super Mario World was my first Mario game. Didn't matter. Super Mario All Stars blew my mind when I first played SMB3.
Mario world is too easy and lacks variety. The cape breaks the game. Just fly to the end.
Mario 3 also had better physics and had the current power down system of going to big mario instead of straight to going back to small

I know that's partially a product of watching the trailer so many times in anticipation, but I would definitely consider that song to be on par with the most memorable Mario Bros. songs.
And the Piranha Plant Parade. THE PIRANHA PLANT PARADE.
Can't wait to pick this up! I still play Super Mario World every few years.
Visually speaking this game is such an accomplishment. I almost can't believe how pretty it is. Super fun too
One thing I enjoyed a lot more than I expected was the online mode.
The game is amazing, but too short.
>a campaign
Please, what is there to forget, you need to beat Bowser.

Disagree. OOT is better.
A day with an impromptu video from MVG praising a new game is always a good day!
Bought it as soon as I got off work lastnight. Been having a blast and it looks amazing on OLED
Hearing you mention SM World was life.
Not everyone follows the Directs. Some people like being spoiler free
So there's basically 8 worlds to explore counting the boswer castle that leads to the final boss 🤔 and the special world
It evokes the same pure joy as Galaxy did - just magical!
Super Mario Galaxy is superb!
Absolutely agree, music can carry a game.
Can you give me an example of two of games that are carried by music alone? Genuinely interested, as I usually stick to Nintendo games and, I really don't branch out much from that.
I actually don't like that stupid "booolibababa" music. Is it just one level though, or are they all like that?

Excellent review of a wonderful game. This game has made me feel what I felt when I played SMW for the first time in the early 90s.

Opening line about Super Mario World sold me on the video
I'm loving the game. It has that special Nintendo Magic, I found myself smiling and laughing at the little details. I can't help but imagine others feeling the same. I'm taking my time and replaying levels with Yoshi (restarting if I get hit for extra fun)!
I agree that there is a tendency to want to rush finishing the game but it is better to take your time!
Someone on Reddit that played a leaked copy said it took them 26 hours to 100% the game.
Tilting backgrounds! Gasp! What a masterpiece!
SMB3 > SMW. This is a hill I'm willing to die on 😁
The badges represent the movement abilities of the characters from previous iterations.
The hover jump - Luigi
Speed dash - Toad
Slow fall - (arguably closest to Peach)
etc...
Poke around on the world map, there are a few secrets there :P
I think the stages are very well tuned such that no badge in particular is required for something.

@@gesi7072 can you explain to me what the standees are?
@claudiacanales2662 they are little sign posts that look like the playable characters, which you and other players can set down in levels. When you play online and other players are in the level with you, or if someone left a Standee nearby and you end up dying to an obstacle you become a ghost, then your ghost can be controlled to touch a standee or another player and you will be revived. Well said Mvg. This game is absolutely amazing.
The final challenge in the game is basically a whole game in if itself
I don't think much should be said after just 4 hours...
Yeah this video was rushed
Some reviewer said it best "it feels like a proper sequel to Super Mario World and Yoshis Island"
You’re talented. I clocked 70 hours by the time I beat the game at 100%.
Thank you for not calling it “Super Merry-o Broze”.
One of my favorite things about the whole video is not having my ears shredded!

You have no idea how wrong you are. I was you a week ago.
It is an amazing game the only real complaint I have is the level difficulty for veteran Mario player is very low until the final final level.
how were you able to enjoy it though? when it was so easy? how can a game be fun without being challenging?
@@michaelpeters78 It has enough unique level design to keep the game interesting as you go forward, and finding secret exits which is fun. If you are a veteran Mario player it won't be too tricky until the final final stage.
So anyone who actually played the game, is it really good? I dont trust those reviews
I have, boring for me
Lots are enjoying it
Well, I would recommend listening to reviews from people (like MVG I presume) whom you find yourself aligning with taste wise.
I have, much more fun than every game since wii. Every level having a unique twist really helps to keep things interesting until the end.
But it still is a mario game. I didn't finish wii u because it was too repetitive, but I do actually like platformers. If you don't enjoy playing through the beginning of a mario game, you will not like wonders.
Thanks alot, ill consider buying it next week
Always appreciate when a youtuber makes game references to classic games like Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Bubble Bobble, etc.
Very good analysis video on Mario Bro Wonder. Nintendo did a good job especially with the details throughout the game from little details to the amazing gameplay.
Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island, Mario World 1, Mario Bros 3 are among my favorite Mario 2d games.
1.Super Mario World SNES
2. Super Mario 64
3. Super Mario 3
super mario 64 was overrated
@@Soddus.the game that perfected 3D gaming is not overrated.
@@Throbingkcoc banjo tooie or kazooie was much better
Sm64 greatest game of all time
