I Bought 2 BROKEN Nintendo 2DS XL's - But Can I Fix Them?! Both of the broken 2DS XL's have power issues that I'm hoping I can fix to get them working again. Sometimes power problems can be really tricky to track down and fix. It's still fun to try though... even if it doesn't always work out.

I actually appreciate people that put out videos that show the other side of the coin. It helps make us at home feel somewhat better when things don't go exactly to plan.
Right to Repair: TronicsFix joins the battle!
Just for the sake of reducing e-waste right to repair should just be mandatory in every part of the world.
Really great effort and explanation! Thanks for showing us all how the diagnosis goes and how it can end up sometimes when you go to fix things.
The only real issue is the reflow is a hit or miss solution. Most times it’s a temporary fix, a reball is a more solid fix but can be spends and time consuming. Been there with lots of Xbox 360 units.
It’s a totally bummer when that happens, I have learned a lot and still learning from you Mr. Steve Sir I really enjoy your videos
Thanks 👍
You just keep pumping these VIDS out! Love the passion keep it up brotha.
Once a week for the last several years! Good thing I enjoy it most days!
@@Tronicsfix is it your full job or do you have another job?
Maybe a follow up video using a working board to measure and compare readings between the two? Swapping components also? It would be interesting to see your approach to this type of troubleshooting.
About that right to repair law, one reason it's so important for this to change is because "disposability" of electronics like these 2DS units will keep ending up in landfills contaminating our environment. Yeah you can say recycle them but that takes effort & doesn't always happen.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In that order
It's so satisfying to watch things being repaired. Found you on Facebook. And I subbed as well. Hope you get 1 million.
I for one really appreciate highly skilled people showing that it does not always go as planned. It makes us regular people not feel as incompetent. :D
Love your videos, Steve! Your channel is an automatic go-to every Friday to see what's new!
Glad you like them!
Unlucky Steve, it will just make the next fix feel amazing! Very well explained also 😁👍
Hope we see a re-visit, sad seeing them stay broken. Great video though
I like it that you show the fixes where you failed.
Also it adds a little narrative tension if you don't know that it will be fixed during the video.
I would consider investing in tools & equipment that allow you to diagnose issues further. A high quality thermal cam and voltage injection could quickly pinpoint "no start" issues like this. Alex at Northridge Fix does this all of the time with great success.
He has those tools. He probably just isn't familiar with this particular system
I was thinking similarly, a FLIR cam could quickly point out an overheating/shorted component.
I came to the comments to tell him to try a thermal camera if he doesn't already have one. Good job.
I used to work tier 1 tech support and these videos when you’re not able to repair the thing reminds me of escalating a problem to a dev thinking it’s a bug and them confirming that it is one
I love when you do any sort of 3ds or ds!
This is a great video Mr. Porter. Most UA-cam channels only show their success with audience and obviously someone with a lot of experiences like you make things look easy on their videos so enthusiasts might think repairing stuff is easy, fast and always successful which is far from truth and it might lead to losses due to buying broken stuff with the intention of fixing them...
This channell should have at least five times as many subscribers such good content deserves great things for Steve one of the greatest you tubers around love the channell Steve.
Wow, thank you!
Thanks for showing both your successes and failures, and for inspiring me to make my own videos!
I love how actually show us how to fix it
This is a great video regardless of success on the repair. The content is what matters. The troubleshooting process and the attempts is what’s important.
I can watch this channel for hours, keek up the good work !!
Yo I love your content I’ve been watching your channel for two years now, keep up :)
steve, reflowing, and re-soldering chips
meanwhile, --me watching ... reflowing soda's and juices on my tummy and eating potato chips XD
While not a victory, I still really enjoyed the video. I always have respect for the fact you show the ones that don't always work out.
Love to see you do some old ps2s and other things man. Love your work
Even if you don't succeed in fixing the devices, the video still holds a lot of educational value!
we appreciate the effort you put trying to fix it :)
He is so smart! Can fix almost anything. Awesome! Thank you Tim😁
I thought his name was Steve
@@WoobyMe yes, i know his name is Steve, i said he to refer to him. 😁😁
Drat. I still learned a lot about how to open a New 2DS XL if I should ever need to open mine. 😃
I hardly know anything about fixing consoles but damn is it interesting to see
So glad you enjoy my vids!
As always, awesome videos! greetings from Mexico!
just ordered the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit
Tropics congrats on almost getting 1mill subs you deserve it :)
The nonchalant way Steve says "Imma reflow these chips" these words bring fear into my heart and he is like mehhhhhh...
I thank you so much for these videos they are always entertaining and I have learned so much! I just did a full motherboard replacement on a 2ds a week ago it works great now! I have now fixed over 7 game consoles! Thank you so much for all I have learned. 😁
Nice repair attempt. Right to Repair is the single most important issue for ALL electronic consumers of the 21st Century!
Better luck next time, my friend! Keep going!
Don’t apologize for showing the real deal! Those of us who try to repair broken stuff know how it goes… you win some, you lose some. And quite often, the game is rigged… that’s why right to repair is a fight worth backing.
this feels nostalgic
I too sat reminiscing about the old days. When times were easier. People were happier. Tronicsfix was busy fixing it until it was broken - just like today..
That suck....be nice to see 1 work....well here to help get your videos out to everyone 😀 😉
Love you mono Steve. "Fix it until it's completely broken
What a bummer, nice job trying though. We really need to get RTR in effect soon so that people like you can repair an otherwise unrepairable console/handheld.
I think there is still more that could be done here. Maybe you did more testing and didn't show it. But I would definitely check the caps around the chips to see if any of them are shorting to ground. If they are, it's probably the chip. You can hook up a power supply at 3.7V to the battery connector and see how many amps it draws. If it passively draws >0.5A there's a short on the main power rail that should be easy enough to track down. Just some ideas.
I've been waiting for you to upload! Lol! I'm gonna buy one and try to fix it.
Thanks for watching!
@@Tronicsfix thanks for working hard to post and bringing me some intellectual entertainment!
I love the 3ds so much. Such an underappreciated console!
Your videos are just as good whether you fix them or not
Good effort Steve! Ya can't fix em all but youll get the next one.
Nice try! But, I do believe it's important to show that even some of the most seasoned techs can't fix everything. Good video Steve! You'll get the next one
Bugger you couldn't get them working but a cracking effort nonetheless! 😊
I don't know what is it with your videos they just pull me in.
Love to hear that!
2ds xl's are very delicate as it seems, sometimes ago I fixed a bunch of dsi xl's I got in a job lot, and I managed to fix almost all of them, and 2 of them had the exact faults as those 2, in my case, it was blown fuses and in one the charging circuit traces where damaged, and another one was liquid damaged, altough I did manage to clean it and it worked (and still does), I am sure you already did that but, have you checked the fuses on those? Sometimes they can cause a charging but no power, other times (with the ds lite it was common) if the board was slightly bent it also produces this issue.
I think it could be, even though the battery is charging, but it may have a problem that it has to make it not start.
Great like always Steve
Glad you enjoy them!
Can't wait for the sequel when you fix them both!
back wit it
Great work!
I hope there are diagrams there in future which help to make work easy
Also, you can try voltage injection tool, which tells you where short is coming from.
You should use your influence to push for right to repair more aggressively
Lol...you'll like what I have coming up!
@@Tronicsfix 👍
As far as I'm aware, the 2DS needs the top assembly to boot, right? Or is that only the 3DS? A common symptom of non-booting 3DSs is a broken speaker flex cable. Not sure if the 2DS is the same.
nah he said the blue light would flash on the 2ds xl even if it isnt fully assembled
I will always give a thumbs-up for right to repair videos!
I know we all hate failures but I think it's important to show that you show not everything is fixable and we can learn from them and make a push for right to repair laws to make fixing things more accessible
A network of people taking voltage and signal measurments on working devices would be a great help.
Good job, but you should check shortage on capacitors. Check voltage, does it go through the chips etc. Just try once again :)
Thank you so much for doing these! Im trying to get a 2ds XL and all i can see (thats not drastically price inflated) are broken :(
Good try Steve. Good video ☺️
Glad you enjoyed it
I've got 2 of the 2ds that are like new I enjoy them more then I did when I bought them for my son and I 5 yrs ago.
Although it's a pity you couldn't turn broken consoles into working consoles this time, but it was still jolly good content for the channel. Plus I'm sure all of your viewers appreciate your honesty in showing that sometimes you simply can't fix electronics without more resources at your disposal.
I love that you frequently bring up the lack of Right to Repair laws when it stymies you.
If I have to clean a board like this one I use Isopropyl Solvent and an old electric toothbrush, It seems to work ok so far, I have not knocked or damaged anything.
I recently threw a 3DSXL into the bin because I'd not used it in years and when I did a battery check it was bulging. Should have sent it to you. :)
Thats a bad sign. I strongly recommend you properly dipose of that battery
Noooooo...it could have been saved!
In the original 3DS there are 2tiny capasitors that, when broken, won't let the 3DS turn on, one is close to the battery contacts while the other is close to the charging port, it might be worth checking if that could be the problem
actually this are 2DS's so maybe won't work
you mean fuses, right?
Satisfying to get your notifications.
Nice try to repair those 2DS Steve.
Could you do a repair video of all 3ds systems with the popping noise and turn off issue? Blue light runs but a slight popping noise shuts off both screens before fully powering on?
Hi Tronicsfix I love your videos they sure put a huge smile on my face when I’m upset. But what is your eBay cause my mom was gonna get my little brother a ps4 slim.
The DS lite also had a cap that liked to pop off if the system got dropped so it doesn't surprise me that later models would have a similar issue.
I don’t mean to sound like a sadist but I really like the repair videos where the problem isn’t just “replaced the battery”.
what are your thoughts on doing analog signature analysis on your troubleshooting? you have a lot of known goods and you can make reference signature database for game systems you attempt to fix.
if i remember correctly the nintendo ds has an selfcheck before starting up. maybe this has an selfcheck and its failing thats maybe why its not starting up because it cant get a reading from the screen or from the other components. maybe you could check
Nice video
Thanks
I have a broken nintendo switch. The part that the battery connects to is snapped. I'm not that great at soldering. Is there anyway I can get you to fix it? Me and my kids would appreciate it a ton.
Unfortunately, I don't offer repair services but I recommend shanefix.com
Hi Goblin! This is something I do myself and would be happy to help get this done for you ASAP.
I have ps3 super slim when plugged in it shows the red light and after some time it turns on by it self with no display or power to disk drive I would like some advice
@@konsolemend how much would it cost to fix and replace a nintendo switch lite usb type c charger?
Even with right to repair, I wouldn’t expect any kind of in-depth schematic. If we get companies to sell parts and not lock the replacement of parts, it’s already gonna be great.
We need right to repair and we need it yesterday!
This may be a bit unrelated but I was fixing my 3ds and I broke off the battery connector so I soldered the battery directly to the pads with wires and it wouldn’t work with just the positive and negative terminals attached, the middle one had to be connected as well, and from what I remember it acted the same way these are with the middle terminal disconnected, but this was a while ago so I could be mistaken.
Yes battery tools tend to do the same thing, they want to know the temperature, an easy bypass is to wire a 10k or 4.7k resistor from positive or negative to the temp pin, very handy if you ever want to mod your own batteries in something.
Same here, I had problem with a New 2DS XL, tried to fixed it for days, no luck, and it is impossible to find some parts for it.
Have you seen this new xbox possible ssd adapter to use 3rd party ssds with the console? Are you going to do a video on it? Like to see your in depth take on it
Send it to my mate vince 😄 let him give a go at it
Why not use a thermal camera to check any power shortages?
very cool video bro
Give them the right to repair!
I'm not sure if you just didn't show it for the video. But on the first 2DS, the first thing I would have checked is if the power button was
faulty.
Then you didn’t watch the video 😂
@@pidhsome When did he do it? I see him pressing the buttons to try and turn on the consoles but not testing the buttons themselves.
I left my $250 launch day 3ds in the yard, it was rained on for about 4 hours. When I got it back inside the house I removed the battery. and left a heater blowing on it far a couple of days. reassembled and it worked fine for years, but now the "a" button is intermittent. all in all I'll take the win.
Probably just needs cleaned and it'll be fine.
Pro-tip, if your devices ever get wet unless it's glued shut, take it apart and pour IPA over it, also preferably use a toothbrush or Qtip and gently scrub it, the IPA will run the water off the board and rubbing it will remove any dirt/minerals left from the water then you can blow it with some compressed air and it'll be completely dry in a few minutes.
We really need a massive leak of schematics/service manuals much like that megaleak with the Nintendo stuff. So far, we've managed to obtain a service manual for the Xbox One.
Are you sure that the detached component is a capacitor?
Often the dark ones are inductor and they can prevent current flow
Couldn't you check for shorted components or use the thermal imaging camera like you have done in Xbox videos?
Didn't see that you checked the broken cap for short. Fractured MLCC can lead to short circuit
I love your videos
Thank you for watching!
I’m in the UK and unfortunately we don’t have right to repair either. Looking forward to the USA passing the law as it’ll make schematics and parts available to us as well. I’m sure they will try and geolock it down but there is always a way around that. So sick of this throw away culture. The amount of ewaste is sickening.
Still good content 👍🏾💯
I just received my I fix it pro set yesterday. I’m itching to take something apart.
