I live 10 minutes from Bosse Field. It is the third oldest surviving ball park in America, only after Fenway and Wrigley. Countless legendary players played here including Hank Greenburg, Warren Spahn, Eddie Roush, Mark Fidrych, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, just to name a very few. Negro League games were played here in the 1920's. Jim Leyland managed our AAA team, the Triplets, to The American Association Championship in 1979. The film "A League of their Own" was largely filmed at Bosse Field, as the home of the Racine Belles. To dismiss this beautiful, charming, much-loved, historic ball park as merely outdated is a great injustice to our city and the history of this landmark.
The gateway grizzlies stadium is also on a epa Superfund site due to Monsanto's production of agent orange here during Vietnam. The creek nearby actually glows at night.
I'm a fan of the Grizzlies. The only other Frontier League stadiums I've been to are River City Rascals (yes, they went out on top) & Southern IL Miners. Thank you for this video tour of all the current (2021) Frontier League stadiums!
Hey I Requested this one thanks for doing it Fun Fact Bosse Field is the 3rd oldest Ballpark in America still in use for professional baseball behind Fenway and Wrigley
Was also used for the filming of “A League of Their Own”. Not owned by the ball club or the city, but is the property of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. The back wall used to be the home run wall, before they moved it in.
For those wondering, the water tower used to say "FLORENCE MALL", but due to some local ordinance they had to remove the mall reference. It was too much of a local staple to remove though, so they changed it to "Y'ALL", which is arguably way more iconic. The stadium is within sight distance of said water tower, so the team name makes even more sense because of it
I've been to many a Sussex County Miners game, and it is legit in the middle of nowhere in Northern NJ. Another highlight is the large metal globe outside the main entrance, such has wood placed into it and then set on fire after night games. If you can find pictures of it, it's quite a cool sight. Keep Diggin'!
Oh wow this is cool! The Valleycats are my home team and I've been to Joe Bruno Stadium numerous times since I was young. Very nice stadium with some nice views and a great atmosphere! This actually is the 'Cats first year in the Frontier League as they were a part of the now disbanded New York-Penn League which was a Single A Short Season league. As such, since 2002 when the Valleycats were formed, they have been affiliated with Houston Astros (yes, I know, trash can jokes lol). Glad that they're still playing baseball especially for a league such as this!
Great job, as always. My home stadium is Duck's Stadium on Long Island. Personally, I like the Rockland Boulder's stadium. On a side note, Aye Boo Boo!
I've been to Bosse Field a few times when i lived near there. I believe Bosse is the 2nd oldest baseball stadium in the country. It wasn't flashy but it was functional and we had a good time.
I never thought I would ever see some of these small ballparks get some love from an international lens. FYI at the Thunderbolts they have $1 beer nights and pro wrestling acts after some games!
I attend 3-5 Sussex County Miners games a year. I live 30 mins from the Stadium. I love going there! Grew up going to NJ Cardinals games (Low A club to the St Louis Cardinals) and Sussex Skyhawks (1st independent team)!
Actually have been to a Frontier League Park but it was only in it for one year, 2003. It was Price Cutter Park where the Springfield-Ozark Ducks played in Ozark, Missouri. Before that it had a team with very much the same name since 1999 but they were in the Texas-Louisiana League. After that the ballpark was basically abandoned until the local Metro League which was Springfield's little league, decided to move in but the ballpark clearly wasn't fixed up yet. It was only after the past three or four years that the park got a makeover when U.S. Baseball moved in with their Show-Me League which also drew in college teams such as Drury and Evangel and is also hosting High School State Tournaments as of this year.
I’ve been to many of the Springfield Ozark Mountain Duck games before the Springfield Cardinals came to town. Those games were fun. And the Springfield Cardinals games are fun too.
Québec and Trois-Rivieres stadium were built on the same plan as public works by the provincial governement to make men work during the tough economic times of the 30’s. Quebec stadium now has a full artificial turf (which is bad for the atmosphere the stadium had before, but in Canada, it’s the best since the field condition of a grass field have important restrictions in time of use by summer. Now the stadium can be used any hour and by any kind of baseball. Ottawa stadium has been a AAA park in the past (Ottawa Lynx) which was Montreal Expos farm team and after the Orioles
Yeah I remember back when Quebec had to postpone between 5 and 10 games per season back when they had a grass surface. Now they can play at almost any time although some fans are not aware of that yet, so during bad weather games attendance is usually lower. The team is also able to keep their prices low as well because they no longer only make money solely from ticket sales.
Well explained. Both stadiums were built during the prime minister Duplessis era and I think they have been considered the best looking stadium in Canada, so far. ;) By the way I was raised by the Quillorama Stadium (Trois-Rivières) when our town had a AA team afficiliated with the Cicinnati Reds. We used to have great young players that made the major later on: Griffey, Driessen, Eastwick, Youngblood, Hume, Zachry, Knight (Ray), Andujar and so on. Quebec City was an Expos affiliate AA too where Dawson, Carter, Valentine and others made it as well. It was a great time.
There’s also a former frontier league team called the Dubois County Dragons. They played at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Indiana, which was built in 1894 and is still in use today. It was the home stadium of the Rockford Peaches in the movie A League of Their Own. It’s a unique stadium from a time long passed.
I've been going to see the Wild Things play for years now. At one time, Consol Energy Park had a hot tub down the right field line, and yeah, it was open during the game.
Grew up in Joliet. The most fun thing to do as a kid at a Jackhammers/Slammers game was to get tickets on the lawn and run around with your friends on the lawn. Maybe roll down the hill too.
The Schaumburg Boomers used to be the Flyers and the Ball park was originally named Alexian Field. The owner of the Flyers had to sell the team cause he could not afford to pay the bill for it.
The New Jersey Jackals have moved the an old-new ballpark in Paterson known as Hinchliffe Stadium, which is one of the few stadiums still standing that hosted a team from the Jim Crow era Negro League, which the stadium hosted the league’s Black Yankees.
Since I was a student at the university where yogi Berra stadium is, I can say it has a nice atmosphere for both college baseball and great atmosphere for jackals baseball. The jackals fan base is loyal
@@francissager3133 I live over there and commute to the Bronx every day. The worst times are the morning and Friday evening but it’s not as far as the video makes it.
The Joliet Slammers stadium actually resembles a jail. The Joliet area has the old Illinois State penitentiary made infamous in the Blues Brothers movie. Statesville Prison (mostly for Illinois governors), and a youth correctional center.
Quebec city and Trois-Rivieres are the same stadiums and they were built in the same years after the Great Depression to boost economy that is why they very look alike. As for the teams names Quebec Capitales is because the city is the provincial capital and for the Aigles it means eagles in french.
Bosse field is one of the oldest professional ballparks in the country and has even hosted NFL games for the old Evansville Crimson Giants back in the 1920s. As well, "A League of Their Own " was filmed there. Great old place with a "down home" feel! Loved watching the Otters there. (BTW, the Otters were at one time in the old American Association.)
He mentions the grass behind the wall. That wall is a new adjustment to the park. It shrinks the outfield to a normal size. The original wall is visible behind it.
For Wintrust Field he forgot to mention the municipal airport nearby. So it is possible to see a small airplane fly over the stadium on its way to land at the airport.
If you get around to it, look at the stadiums in another independent league, Anerican Association of Independent Baseball. I've been to one stadium in that league, that one being Shaw Park, home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
I live in Schaumburg and have been to a few Boomers game. For an Indy league team they have a great craft beer selection of local breweries. Being a Cubs fan I do wish they had moved there in either the mid 80s or early 2010s as was rumored but never came to fruition.
We like to call Ozinga Field, the Concrete Jungle up in Section DD. And yes, the view is a lot better in the upper deck, our voices carry better when heckling the opposing team’s shortstop.
At Mercy Health Stadium (Lake Erie Crushers), the ENTIRE FIELD is field turf. The infield, warning track, batters boxes, and mounds are ALL field turf. On a hot summer day the whole place smells like used tires due to the ground up rubber in the turf.
Aigles is French for Eagles. The Ottawa ballpark was originally home to the Ottawa Lynx a triple-A farm team of Montreal Expos (and International league champs in 1995)and Philadelphia Phillies till they moved to of all places Allentown.
The New York (formerly rockland) Boulders used to draw very well, but over last 4 years or so attendance has plummeted. with luck the Frontier league absorbing the Boulders brings some people back as they are still not affiliated, they can claim MLB partnership
I have been to Trois Rivereres for the Grand Prix around the stadium. The area is the exhibition grounds and the horse track is across the street /race track from the Stadium. I am guessing their was money spent before they joined the Frontier League, it was a little shabby in the 90's
When I went to GCS Ballpark, I wanted to try “baseballs best burger” but I ate right before I went to the game but I’ll most likely go again and I’ll definitely have to try it then
The Y'all's are named after a legal necessity painted on a water tower. They built the Florence Mall in the 1970s, right next to I-75, just south of Cincinnati. A huge water tower for the mall was almost hanging over the interstate. It had "Florence Mall" painted on it, a kind of sign for the mall. There was a legal dispute as to whether they could use that name, so for a while they changed "Mall" to Y'all, because Kentucky was the first southern state that I-75 passed through coming South. After some years, the mall was allowed to keep the name, but the Florence Y'all on the water tower was a beloved symbol of the city by then. When the Florence Freedom's owner died in 2019, the team was sold and renamed after the sign on the water tower.
I believe the airport's 3-letter identifier, CPS, comes from when it was known as Curtiss-Parks Airport. In my lifetime, it's been either Bi-State Parks Airport, St Louis Downtown-Parks Airport or the current official name St Louis Downtown Airport.
About the only reason I could see Ozinga Field having the 2nd deck on one side is if they also played football or soccer there, but I don't even think a field would fit when you consider the shape of the outfield.
The Florence Y'alls comes from the water tower that says "Florence Y'all" . It said Florence Mall but there is a city ordinance that says a business cannot have an advertisement over 75 ft high so the city only painted over the M so it looked like a Y.
The grass between the warning track wall and outer walls at Bosse field. That area used to be in play territory when Evansville used to host a minor league team. I think it was AA or AAA. Back then, it was very rare for someone that a homerun at that field until they brought in the field that’s currently there.
Palisades Credit Union Park is 20 miles from the George Washington Bridge. The Boulders were originally the Rockland Boulders as they are in Rockland county, but everyone knows New York by name better. The fans at Stade Canac are probably the most passionate. Les Capitales do a really quality job producing the game, as of this moment, they have my favorite mascot, Capi, when I visit them. Sussex features a cigar bar on the first base line. Ottawa sadly is a boring stadium. 10000 seats for a paying crowd of 2000, and concessions that remind me of my old high school lunch line. I hope the new ownership group replacing the Ottawa Champions do a better job than the prior owners in drawing people to the park.
Not gunna lie. Wen I read Frontier League, I was expecting teams from the western part of the States. Some nice barns though. Am I mistaken or does Ozinga Field have a floating lighting bank😂🤣
The other main independent leagues are the Atlantic league and american association. You should also do the kbo (Korean ) only 10 teams and CPBL only 5 teams (Taiwan)
I played in this league. I have fond memories in many of the ballparks. I was actually there for the Man vs Food episode with Baseball's Best Burger.
Bosse Field was one of the ballparks used to film A League of their Own. There's still a Racine Belles sign there.
I should read all the comments before I repeat others comments. :)
They are called the Gateway Grizzlies because St Louis is known as the “gateway to the west”

Was just at a Y’alls game yesterday lol. Honestly I wish frontier league got more love. The games are always a blast!
Some people call raccoons “trash pandas”. That’s where the name comes from.
Bosse Field was where “League of their own” was filmed
I have seen the River City Rascals play. Also I took a train from STL to Chicago and the train went right by the Jolliet Slammer ballpark.
