We give a run down of each of the Patriot League football stadiums. The Patriot League is one of the many NCAA Division I FCS conferences. Thanks for watching!
Even though its a simple design, Lehigh has a very beautiful overall stadium design. It has perfectly design locations for future expansion and a beautiful view. I wish we had more stadiums like those in Königsberg.
My favorite part of Goodman is the shape of the field which I consider the closest to perfection for soccer. The stadium is on a campus separate from the primary one and also includes Stabler Arena for basketball and the Ulrich (soccer) and Banko (lacrosse) fields which share a common grandstand and press box, both of which are two-sided.
@@lsmftymf Only complaint is that you are far from the field. Seats are comfortable, very relaxed feel, but if you want to be on top of the action, its not possible.
Yes. Too much sideline room. The 50 yard line seats are so far off the field. Also, for the longest time, the scoreboard was complete crap. Couldn't even read it in the sun.
I marched in the band at Holy Cross in the mid '90s, and remember the game when they (Lehigh) changed from the Engineers to the Mountain Hawks (Engihawks?). The "Marching 97" was a great rival band. Goodman Stadium reminded me of a fairgrounds, and the entrance at mid-level (with the countersunk stadium design) was unqiue. As other commenters noted, the views were farther away but it was a great field for halftime and a beautiful stadium overall. Our band's favorite away venue.
@@dbenjazz David, seems incredible that the Holy Cross band came down in the 90s. Good deal for you. I saw the Crusaders at Goodman a few times, but I don't ever recall the Holy Cross band in the 2000s, I guess the budget dried up by that time... Holy Cross has the best PL football program these days, bar none. I love watching their team in 2022. Lehigh somehow picked up their fired coach Gilmore, who has been a total disaster and set the Lehigh program back a decade.
Coffey Field in the Bronx is the one that stands out the most to me. It’s home to one of the longest standing football rivalries in the history of American high school football. The Turkey Bowl between Xavier and Fordham Prep. A long, great, storied tradition.
Patriot League has limits on athletic scholarships. Pretty certain UConn and UMass would rather hold on to theirs which are currently greater in amount. If not for that, both schools would more appropriately be members of America East which much more resembles the old Yankee Conference.
UConn was I-AA when I was there; in fact, we were a charter member of I-AA. Frankly, we should have stayed there. I remember going to play Colgate in 1976 with the UConn Marching Band; their stadium looked much more like a high school field back then. And yes, Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic college. We played them when I was at UConn.
UMASS was also, I-AA. Actually saw them kick the crap out of Lafayette in the playoffs one year. They apparently decided that they want to be irrelevant in I-A football though.
Love the redesign of Fischer field with the field house in the back drop. Lehigh has the beautiful mountains in the background that makes for a perfect day almost anytime of the year.
I live in NYC. When you go around NYC watching high school football or youth football in general, the football fields in NYC are mixed with the baseball fields so Coffey Field fits with what you see around the city.
Along with Boston University's Nickerson Field, the coolest Patriot League non-tackle-football stadium is Loyola University Maryland's Ridley Athletic Complex. It's used for soccer and lacrosse and has a 6,000-capacity double-decked grandstand on one side. It opened in 2010.
Fisher Stadium is also where my high school plays their annual thanksgiving rivalry game this year would be the 114th meeting between the two schools would be the 115th if last year’s didn’t get canceled
Unfortunately the Bethlehem Steel moved out because of lack of lights at Goodman. Wish I had a million dollars to donate to Lehigh for the installation of LEDs.
Thank you so much for the Patriot League stadiums! By request... The PL fielded some really terrible football teams in 2021, but most of them do have a tremendous football history. No rivalry better than Lehigh vs. Lafayette on the 3rd Saturday in November. Fitton Field in Worcester is memorable to the thousands of people traveling right behind the western stands on the Interstate highway...the stands are just 20 meters from the highway. And every seat feels like (and is) right on top of the field. Sadly, they never fill the cozy place for the current best PL team. I can attest that Goodman Stadium at Lehigh is bucolic, having spent many a Saturday afternoon there on the LU side. On a warm autumn day during a particularly dull game, you could easily dose off in the Indian Summer sun. Great place for a smuggled picnic lunch and/or flask of whisky. But you are so far from the action and all the game noise of football, fans must rely on the LU marching band for the atmosphere. Fortunately the band is very good. Gorgeous setting in the Saucon Valley, plenty of good seats as the place hasn't been filled to capacity for many years (except for Lafayette game). I have never been to Colgate campus, but that Andy Kerr Stadium is on my bucket list. The town of Hamilton is so freaking isolated in the hinterlands of upstate NY, it's tough to get to. Colgate is by far the coldest place in the PL come late October and November, but their small fan base is intense and loyal. Sadly no teams in this league average anywhere close to 10K per game nowadays.
No, “Saucon Valley” along the Saucon Creek in Lehigh and Northampton Counties of Pennsylvania is unrelated to Saucony shoes, which descends from a shoe manufacturer that began along the Saucony Creek in Berks County Pennsylvania.
You should make a video comparing American Football Stadiums from when they were first built to current day. There are so many historic fields that have changed over time expanded or been demolished and rebuilt.
If Boston University ever brought back Football, Nickerson Field would fit right into the conference. Even without putting back up a second stand, it tops Fordham and Georgetown.
THAT stadium is unique and the most historic of them all. Would love to see BU bring back FB and join the PL. Speaking of baseball connections, that one is truly one of a kind...the home of the Boston Braves of the major leagues for nearly 40 years.
@@Arturo-sm1tb Boston University is already a full Patriot League member, just not in tackle football. Best thing about Nickerson is that soccer and lacrosse are played there now.
Fordham's field isn't entirely unusual in the Northeast as a few smaller colleges, especially private schools at the D2 level, and a few high schools in the Jersey City area, have similar configurations.
Its unfortunate Fordham couldn't move their baseball field and complete the football facility with 2 grandstands and a border. They may have the best current football program in the league, and deserve better.
LOL...high schools in the Jersey City area? Since Fordham fields a great PL program and schedules some good FBS schools from time to time, they deserve a proper stadium. They have an amazing college FB history as well back to Vince Lombardi and such. Current Arizona Cardinals star RB Chase Edmunds played his college career at that lousy little field. Fordham needs to upgrade.
