Melanie Turning Her Popup Camper Into Hard Side Camper

  • Melanie wanted to work on her own camper and restore the sides. This was a mouse eaten popup camper which Melanie is turning into a hard side camper.
    She spent the previous day cleaning out the camper. It has two hard sides and had two canvas sides. The canvas was long gone. Melanie cleaned and sanitized every surface of her new camper and then loaded her craft materials into it.
    Now that Melanie knows how to use the power tools she wants to do the work herself on her own camper.
    I assisted in showing how to hold the tools and on the measurements of the plywood.
    We carried the plywood over together. I had two 4x8 sheets of plywood someone gave me recently and that was the perfect fit for the job.
    Melanie measured and marked the board for cutting. I made the long cut though because she was not familiar with this type of cutting and did not feel safe with it.
    Together we put up the long board on the open side of the camper and Melanie screwed it into place after I made sure it was centered properly.
    We managed to get all the holes closed in with plywood on this day.
    Life goes on at the homestead though and there are chores in the mean time.
    We have goats to milk. Chickens and turkeys to feed. Cats to care for.
    And there are many other chores on the homestead which take our time.
    Chris received a gift today from UA-camr MollyDolly. Chris says thank you for the very nice gift.
    Melanie took a few minutes break inside the tiny house on wheels today and put up some decorations. We have some little shelves under the loft where the boards overlap. This gives us the perfect place for little decorations. Melanie has a bunch of antique porcelain and silver items which she is putting up there. I had these from my house cleanout days.
    Melanie took the seat cushions that I was given for the Jeep and claimed them for herself for her new camper. She is leaving me with the ones that came with the popup camper. She prefers the brown color of these ones.
    I was hoping to get the sheet metal on the sides already but time ran out on us.
    The chickens are staying in their new home. We call it Birdcatraz 2.0 and there is no escape now. We put up deer netting over the top to prevent the birds from escaping out the top. They were using the tree stumps as jump off points and escaping over the top of the chicken wire fence.
    Chris and I had nailed upright boards on the stumps and then put deer netting over the top. This prevents the birds from escaping.
    Thanks for watching. Please Subscribe & follow my daily videos.

      That was a birthday gift...but I apparently screwed up the Amazon order so it was delayed. Well, I guess as Troy said...that just spread the festivities out a bit longer. :) I had an awesome secretary who wore a crown the entire month of her birthday and we were all allowed to bring gifts any day that month with no late penalty! lol!

      Yeah, I think Troy looks at Chris like a brother or family, and kind of forgets that they are each their own person, I find it funny how my hubby calls mine and our stuff "his" unless he thinks it's a silly thing or if it embarrasses him, than it is mine. lol. Than it gets even funnier when his burly men friends, think I have cool stuff and even sometimes want to buy it off of me, than "my" stuff is "ours". lol, it can get really complicated. I'm too old to haggle over any of it. Some times men just don't think. And I think it is sweet that troy is giving Melanie her own space, she seems like a sweet heart.

    It would be awesome for you to have a second smaller guest tiny house to add to your little village. Chris could be the first guest. He has been such a great help to the homestead. He is doing what he wants to do and is where he wants to be at this time of his life, although he has a disability, his work and the pace he able to work is obviously his chosen method of therapy and coping. It was so nice to see he received a gift from Molly Dolly.
    Melanie, I've got to know if you have seen ideas on Pinterest for your camper! Lol,! It's coming along nicely.

    Troy- watching this video was brutal. You should rewatch this and really listen to your tone.
    And I thought you were done with bodged together projects. Put that trailer together properly. Put the frame in first then the sheeting. Then you can work with easy squares.

  • @microaggressor8746
    @microaggressor8746 8 років тому +9

    Those screws that Melanie put in on the bottom of the plywood do not appear to be penetrating any solid backing, behind the skin. They went in way to easy and kept spinning at the end. If that's true they will eventually come loose. You don't have rubber washers behind the screws to stop leaks. This is the same reason you put washer backed screws behind metal roofing.

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  8 років тому

      There is not much behind there but some thin plywood under the camper skin. The plywood is just a cover. There will be metal on the outside soon.

    • @microaggressor8746
      @microaggressor8746 8 років тому +1

      The Do It Yourself World You said nothing about the screws stripping out like I mentioned. So you plan to use screws with rubber washers when you attach the metal skin to the plywood?

      Russell Albrecht Are you a framer?

    • @microaggressor8746
      @microaggressor8746 8 років тому +1

      Russell Albrecht "What does it matter"? If you are not qualified to comment on framing then you should not be judging something you know nothing about. I'm not a car mechanic and I never comment on proper and improper car repair work. The 3/4" plywood is the frame. I remodeled 1950's trailer for a friend and the "studs" were 3/4"X 2" and it was fine. Troy has way over done it by using solid wood The weather does not blow through solid plywood; all he has to do is caulk the joint and insulate.

    Enjoy your video, my husband is a Street Preacher and we also work with the homeless and are trying to open a rehab and shelter for the drug addicted and or the homeless. We are looking at doing tiny houses and are waiting and praying for the nation of land, in the meantime we have been donated a old pop-up camper with a slide out. This is something I am not familiar with because my pop up from my father only has beds that slide out not a table. What we would like to do with this slide out pop up is turn it into a solid sided tiny house, much like your project. I was wanting to keep the extra space on the slide out beds, but I notice you did not have any. I was wondering if it is possible to use this space as we have never converted a pop up before. We have torn one down and try to turn your food card but we're not able to finish the project. if you could give me some advice on what to do with a pull-out beds, if it would be feasible to use the area to extend the home or just not use it at all, we wanted to house to people. Separate beds. or even a married couple, we have not decided yet. Any advice you could give us would be much appreciated.

    Was this camper intended to stay in one place and not move much? I did something similar with an old Coleman camper, but made it shorter, like a squarish teardrop, to decrease wind resistance. Never liked the result though, it was a huge drag (literally) towing it anywhere. You were lucky to have a camper with preexisting hard sides that fold. Were I in your situation, I think I would have been trying to preserve its ability to fold, if you planned to tow that is. The front and rear walls could have been made to fold, like garage doors, or a piece canvas would have even been simpler. If it will just sit in one place, your way is far superior, for stability, insulating properties, and so on. Just wouldn't want to tow it.

    No wonder the canvas part deteriorated its a Palomino popup. I had a brand new Palomino used it for 7 years camping with the kids. We made allot of good memories. It set for two years and when it was time to use it again, opened up and somehow wasps got in and the canvas was moldy and deteriorated. Poorly made product. I will never purchase another product from Palomino. I cant believe their still in business. If I purchase another popup camper I'm going to make sure the upper and bottom half's are made of one solid piece of fiberglass instead of this piece of crap Palomino with aluminum shell and poorly sealed edges that allowed water to get in.
