He didn't drop her, she dropped him. She started the chase, she caught her quarry, then let him know it was all about the game. The song is about him nursing his wounded heart.
You are on point. It is about unrequited love. When you are just chemically crazy in love with someone, but they are just using you. They love the attention that you give them and the control they have over you. They start using you and don't really show you any respect. It hurts so bad because you start to see that they don't love you because of the way that they treat you. The only thing you can do is leave even though it hurts so badly. It is really hard to do, but eventually you will leave and then cry for like 6 months straight. Then you move on.
Neil Diamond is my Mom's favorite artist. She's pretty shy and quiet, but when one of Neil's upbeat tunes comes on Mom is transformed into a singing, dancing lady.
Back in the early 80's, my mom loved Neil Diamond and she use to play the album 'The Jazz Singer' all the time when I was getting ready for school. I was totally burned out on it then as a 10 year old kid but now I love it at 52 years old and I still have that album my mom owned back then sitting in my record collection 💯
My favorite song from "The Jazz Singer" It is the quintessential heartache breakup song. He is nursing his heartache with the bottle. Many of us can relate.
He’s saying that they try so hard to get you, and then when the chase is over and he’s put his all into it they don’t want you anymore. There’s a movie called the Jazz Singer which this song is from. Great movie. I be.ie e this was done in the 80’s. He is so iconic. My parents listened to him all the time when I was growing up. He was a So great in concert.
Got to see him perform live about 5 years ago. One word AMAZING second word SAD when it was over. He won't be doing this anymore, but at my age I am relieved I did finally see him in person since I grew up with his music from ages and ages ago.
In 1990 this was the first concert I took my wife to, we weren't married yet she was 19 I was 24... I think we are probably the youngest ones at the concert... I wasn't sure if this was going to be the last time he toured so I paid big dollars to get fantastic seats right up close... He did his show in the round which means he had a round stage in the middle of the venue that rotated. It was around Christmas time and he took a half hour out in the middle of the concert just sing Christmas and Hanukkah songs... Definitely a show I'll never forget.
I am so grateful that my parents loved a wide variety of music and I grew up listening to Neil diamond. Definitely take a dive down that rabbit hole! And definitely watch The Jazz Singer.
I grew up with Neil Diamond my dad's a huge fan and said he's amazing live. Love this song but Neil has written songs for so many others. Another Neil? Neil Sedaka, The hungry years is another stunner.
That showed his voice and quality song writing. Some may say sweet Caroline but…..I’m sure you have heard that at ball games or on tv, one million times. If you want to hear his range again….September morn……..would be a great choice.
Wow, this song still hits hard. Definitely of one Neil's most timeless and beautiful songs. Love it!!! Asia, the title is a metaphor. His love is on the rocks and he's drinking his way through his pain. He didn't leave her, she left him "Suddenly you find you're out there walking in a storm. And when they know they have you, then they really HAVE you."
Neil Diamond has an amazing catalog of songs and has written songs for many singers. My personal favorite remains "Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show" 🙂
Love Neil Diamond! Favorite of course Sweet Caroline! But help me someone think of the patriotic song he sang that's played at every 4th of July fireworks display???? It's so good.
One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Sweet Caroline", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". One of my favorites is "I Am, I Said" which is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.
Yesterdays gone! That relationship has come to an end,and now all he wants is a smile,he ready to move forward and fine new happiness and a new love! That's what I'm getting from the songs lyrics. Great song! Love your reactions and comments!
He just means he’s “got to get away” and mourn; to cry. He did not run from her. He’s walking in the storm in distress. She one hundred percent made him fall for her, then she left him flat to wander alone in the storm. Wanting a smile is just wanting a little bit of kindness with his drink in the bar. Try the duet, You don’t bring me flowers, with Barbara Streisand, and the rest of the Jazz Singer album.
The entire Jazz Singer album is incredible. I saw him in Baltimore in ‘96. The best concert ever. “America,” “Jerusalem,” “Acapulco” to name a few. I believe this came out in ‘79. Good ear, BJ!
Classic! Been a while since I listened to this one. About to get into it.. A lot of times I see the title and just have that urge to comment. Ok, let’s see what y’all think..❤️❤️🙂✨
Love this guys music. Saw him in concert so many times , he is such a performer. He recently retired due to having Parkinsons. This song is all about believing someone loves you, giving into them, and then for them the game is over and they walk. The storm is the emotions that come with the break up and the song is the story behind the relationship, the rocks refers to the love going cold and the drink is the lie that was the relationship.
Neil Diamond early Neil 1960's and 70's good songs. Love on the rocks, means the relationship is on shaky ground. I think his lover has lost that loving feeling not him. "First they say they need you, Eee how they really want you"....Anyway good song. Yes he's using word play "on the rocks".
Thanks for your video, as always! I love you both! In context of the movie (remake of The Jazz Singer) it is different, but I think in general, once you are hooked and the other person is kind of on the fence (or out), it's too late. You need to getaway from this, protect your heart, but it's too late. Get out before you're blind-sided I guess? Neil Diamond can make singing the phone book sound good!
Such a beautiful but sad song by Neil Diamond. He has the perfect voice for this as well as all of the other great hits he has recorded! You can really feel his pain💔 He also did a great duet with Barbara Streisand "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" that is heartbreaking as well with the story it tells. Thanks so much guys for reacting to this one. Like the way you broke it down🧡
I have found only one person that can be the best tribute artist as Neil Diamond. Keith Allynn has a show in Branson, MO and also tours, where he tells Neil's life in song; from Neil's beginning to when he retired. If you ever get the chance to see his show, well worth it.
As a kid...this was one of my favorite songs......still is..for some reason it popped into my head and it hit me hard.......it is not a love song, i always thought it was ......it is about alcoholism addiction and depression...
You all need to react to the movie "The Jazz Singer" from 1980. Amazing soundtrack and Neil Diamond is acting AND SINGING in that movie. The movie is a remake of a classic movie from the 1920s I think.
"When they know they have you...that's when they really have you". When somebody knows you're deep in love with them...when they have your heart, your mind, and your soul...that's when they really have you, because that's when they know...you'll do anything to keep them.
I may be wrong but I think what he’s saying is they tell you how much they love you and they want & need you in their life so you finally give in, drop your guard and fall hard for them and as soon as they realize that they have you they lose interest. They weren’t in love after all. Just wanting something they didn’t have. When he says you need to get away it’s because you’ve truly fallen in love and there can be nothing but pain if you stay and no chance of healing your pain until you completely remove yourself from the source of your pain. I dunno, I could be way out in left field with my comprehension of the song. I think this is one of the songs from the soundtrack of The Jazz Singer, which he starred in.
I always took the meaning more in the music industry/celebrity vein. The agents chase the talent, then when the contract is signed they take advantage & wring the heart out of you till there’s nothing left to give, then throw you away. But certainly it works as a heartbroken melody also.
Oh yes, I’m here for this one with the quickness. Neil Diamond is a national treasure. Such a distinct, lovable voice.
🤣I pretty much said the exact same thing
So many songs out there that I wish I'd written. This is one of them. Thank you.
The metaphor of “ love on the rocks” is about a love being on the rocks and drinking thru your pain!
He didn't drop her, she dropped him. She started the chase, she caught her quarry, then let him know it was all about the game. The song is about him nursing his wounded heart.
You are on point. It is about unrequited love. When you are just chemically crazy in love with someone, but they are just using you. @@Hollingsworth2781 if all you want is a smile...you can't even get that.
@@Hollingsworth2781 Where did you get that he was cheating on her? Women DO just leave .
@@Jason-ns9xq I never said that the he was cheating on her. I made no reference to cheating at all.
Love this song. It is from the movie The Jazz Singer. So many great songs in it.
You can't go wrong with Neil Diamond. He has a great voice.
Excellent movie. This song is real!!!!
with his voice you can that Brooklyn accent break thru mainly at end of every sentence than takes breath...
Some of his best in that movie! 😀
Neil Diamond is my Mom's favorite artist. She's pretty shy and quiet, but when one of Neil's upbeat tunes comes on Mom is transformed into a singing, dancing lady.

My favorite Neil Diamond song! It's from 1980.
This is a great song and his voice is so good here.
I've seen him in concert 3 times in my 54 yrs of life!!!
Watch the video for this song from the movie The Jazz Singer which he starred in. Hello Again is another great ballad from this same soundtrack.
I haven't heard this song in a long while. It stands the test of time. 🔥
This is a total sing along. When you are with him in the lyrics it is intense. Especially after a break up you didn't want.
This song and ...Hello Again... are my favorite Neil Diamond songs, both are from his 1980 movie.. The Jazz Singer.
Neil, one of my favorites. Right off he hits you with one of the best lyrics ever. "Pour me a drink and I'll tell you some lies"... so good
My favorite song from "The Jazz Singer" It is the quintessential heartache breakup song. He is nursing his heartache with the bottle. Many of us can relate.

So great in concert.
Love love love him !!! Did i say how much i adorer this mans voice ??
You cannot go wrong with Neil Diamond! Been to many of his concerts…he is ahhhhmazing!🔥❤️💎
Yeah this a is fabulous tune and what a superb singer!
Neil Diamond is a treasure 👏👏👏👏 his music talent and showmanship is awesome
There are great voices, and then there are legendary voices. This is the latter.
I LOVE Neil Diamond and am a lifelong fan of every move he's ever made. And now... I LOVE you both for doing this, bless each of you!!! 💜
Got to see him perform live about 5 years ago. One word AMAZING second word SAD when it was over. He won't be doing this anymore, but at my age I am relieved I did finally see him in person since I grew up with his music from ages and ages ago.
Keep going down the Neil Diamond rabbit hole…you will be amazed!

Love me some Neil. Very unique voice.
Yo BJ? Seeing my profile picture, you know I love it when you wear that particular hat! This song is a classic. I believe it was 1979.
It’s from a movie called The jazz singer that he was in
That showed his voice and quality song writing. Some may say sweet Caroline but…..I’m sure you have heard that at ball games or on tv, one million times. If you want to hear his range again….September morn……..would be a great choice.
Wife here.., WOW..., My Mother Loved Neil Diamond..Bless him.!!.,I think he's around 80 and still tours at times!!
Asia & BJ, you'll love his "Sweet Caroline", "Song Sung Blue" and "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show"!!!! A great singer/songwriter!
And forever in blue jeans!
Yup!. Excellence.
A quick big thumbs-up!!! Thanks.
Thank you too!
Wow, this song still hits hard. Definitely of one Neil's most timeless and beautiful songs. Love it!!! Asia, the title is a metaphor. A fabulous duet with Barbra Streisand & Neil is called 'You don't bring me flowers' & is so relatable to married people.
Neil Diamond has an amazing catalog of songs and has written songs for many singers. My personal favorite remains "Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show" 🙂
100 percent correct. Drinking his confusion, sadness, and pain away
When somebody say that they want you and need you, so you give them all that you have, only to be tossed aside like trash.
That’s Love on the Rocks
Neil diamond had a lot of great hits
His biggest hit was I Write the Song but I also like the song he wrote for Neil Sedaka called Bad Blood.
This man had such an incredible voice.
I was born in 72 and grew up hearing Neal Diamond all the time. My mother loved him so this one hit me in the feels. I miss you mom, I love you.
Love Neil Diamond! Favorite of course Sweet Caroline! But help me someone think of the patriotic song he sang that's played at every 4th of July fireworks display???? It's so good.
Hi Robin, I think that song is called "America"
Love this song!! He has so many good songs!
My favorite Neil Diamond song, I LOVE his voice and the power of his voice in this song. He's SO talented!
He did a great show at the Greek theatre in 2012
React to "the Jazz Singer" with Neil Diamond, that's where this song is from.
Cherry Cherry - Neil Diamond ✌
BJ is right. Love gone bad. Drink your pain away!!
One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. Heartlight is a great song by him from the ET soundtrack.
Neil!
Another great track from this soundtrack is- hello again
Great song from Neil, a legend with hit after hit from the late sixties through to the late 2980’s and beyond!
A Lovers lament, very well done and said. From the movie track The Jazz Singer.
"Songs of Life" off of "The Jazz Singer" album is amazing...
Love, love, love Neil Diamond. ❤❤
This was cool. My favorite Neil song is "Heartlight." Would be fun to karaoke it. Nice reaction guys.
Dude is an America legend! Great reaction!!🤓🤠
Thanks!!
Beautiful song from the The Jazz Singer movie. Great great great soundtrack. Some of his best work is on this album.
Great singer. Great reaction. I win.
❤️ Great movie and song
The entire Jazz Singer album is incredible. I saw him in Baltimore in ‘96. The best concert ever. “America,” “Jerusalem,” “Acapulco” to name a few. I believe this came out in ‘79. Good ear, BJ!
Classic! Been a while since I listened to this one. About to get into it.. A lot of times I see the title and just have that urge to comment. Ok, let’s see what y’all think..❤️❤️🙂✨
I have been fortunate to have attended two of his concerts, both during the 1990s. Terrific live performer.
Off topic but right now you can see the movie To Sir; with love with Sidney Portier...one of my fav movies of all time. It is free on youtube movies
GREAT movie!
If you want a movie to do on your movie Channel then you should do his movie called the Jazz Singer. Incredible movie.
The song was originally called "Scotch on the Rocks." and is on his box set called "In My Lifetime."
The Jazz Singer, 2nd version. Watch it.
Love this guys music. Saw him in concert so many times , he is such a performer. He recently retired due to having Parkinsons. Nailed it and we've all been there, it's really the worst and best of life, there's no escaping the pain fr, amazing song.
Great singer neil diamond with the golden voice.
You need to check out "The Jazz Singer".
Fun Fact: Neil Diamond wrote most of the music for "The Monkeys".
Thanks for your video, as always! I love you both! Love Neil. His concerts are awesome. Don't remember if you reacted to Neil and Barbara singing You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore.
All ways makes me laugh when BJ drags Asia into it. 😂
The song came out in 1980, was part of the soundtrack to the movie "The Jazz Singer".
what a singer !!! fantastic !
You both are so fun. God bless you both!

My Dad loved this song. RIP Pops. 🙏
Great track.. try his song- solitary man
As a kid...this was one of my favorite songs......still is..for some reason it popped into my head and it hit me hard.......it is not a love song, i always thought it was ......it is about alcoholism addiction and depression...
Love on the rocks, ie singles bar hopes/unstable relationships/desperation.
You all need to react to the movie "The Jazz Singer" from 1980. Amazing soundtrack and Neil Diamond is acting AND SINGING in that movie. The movie is a remake of a classic movie from the 1920s I think.
Context......You need to watch the movie "The Jazz Singer", and yes it was a 70's movie ang song.
Don't know if you reacted to his duet with Barbara Streisand, you don't bring me flowers, it's another good one
YOU SHOULD WATCH "THE JAZZ SINGER" WITH NEIL DIAMOND ! THIS IS ONE OF MANY GREAT SONGS IN THE SOUNDTRACK !
Please react to "Holly Holy" by Neil Diamond
"When they know they have you...that's when they really have you".
When somebody knows you're deep in love with them...when they have your heart, your mind, and your soul...that's when they really have you, because that's when they know...you'll do anything to keep them.
His remake of the Jazz Singer (even though the acting was a bit stilted) was beautiful. And this song was gut wrenching.
My mom adored Neil Diamond. God how I miss her
Yes, this would have been 1981 I do believe.
Just a note : he was in HS Choir with Barbra Streisand. Can you imagine being their teacher / coach?
