When you pitch a generic idea for a “zombie” show to your Netflix buddy but it’s so bad that they need to dress it up in the skin of another ip to pass it off to the department.
From what i've read from Reddit: It is *confirmed* they pitched a whole different idea that retooled as an existing IP, which understandably _barely_ resembles the source material. Blame it on the cheap trash studios that still hold the license property: *Constantin Film/Screen Gems* - _same_ ones that made the other live-actions previously.
The setting is easy. Making an interesting series out of 5 people stuck in a setting is hard , yeah ok the first 3-5 episodes are going to be awesome entering the abandoned mansion, getting split up discovering the zombies and the mysteries of the mansion but then what? How are you going to continue from that point,?
I love how Leon is looking away from the computer screen like "D'fuck is this bullshit?" 🤣 also I see alot of fans constantly say how if they just stick to the source material then the movies would be good but that alone won't make them good adaptations. The script, direction, writing and acting has always been the killer of these adaptations.
I know the other parts you mentioned are important as well but at least following the source material would help a lot in pushing it in the right direction. You can deviate a tiny bit to help things flow more smoothly but nothing to crazy. For instance if they want more time with all the characters together before they split up in the mansion add an extra scene of showing stars at base before the mansion mission starts. Here we can see them talk and interact to get a feel for them a bit more. Its something thats new but at the same time it doesn't harm the source material. Just be sure not to make any characters act extremely different from the source. Ala Wesker shouldn't be buddy buddy with everyone. Have him be a serious toned leader but just not a massive asshole since hes still suppose to be undercover and it should be believable people could trust him. Also while in the mansion you can have it that neither chirs or jill get locked up by wesker instead they still split up and meet their partner ala barry and Rebecca and you can mix up who takes on what boss and areas. Tweaks like this can be done and I doubt it will piss off every RE fan as its still trying to follow the source while giving each character time to shine.
they cdan even change thing, but at least keep the thematics, take for example the first re movie and silent hill, they ar enot geat, but they work. This series here has nothing to do with the games except some names. But bert was funny
The biggest sin in Hollywood when it comes to adaptations of video games to movies, is the directors thinking they can write a better story than the one presented in the game. Also choosing to pander to a narrative instead of the fans is in a very close second.
The biggest sin in Hollywood is that most of these major projects already have a political agenda or backdoor agreement to produce the project in a certain manner or direction. Movies and series aren’t pushed into mainstream for audiences, it’s typically to push the merchandisers, political ideas, or the studio’s productions. Netflix wants a successful gaming IP on their streaming service, Capcom always wants to achieve mainstream audiences, and the production team gets exposure for working on a popular franchise. This is practically no different than when Milla Jovovich married Paul WS Anderson after Resdient Evil in 2002. Ensuring Paul had full control over the Resident Evil franchise even when absent, and Milla using the franchise for stardom, as to why each of the films are focused on her character development, stunt work, and her production. They used the franchise as a resume to cement themselves as the top Sci-Fi family, in less than ten years they’ve already received more work on Marvel projects and game franchises like Monster Hunter.
@@TheRealAdaWong I wish Capcom would protect the IP more. It's a shame that they are willing to whore out Resident Evil. It's such an iconic series and it's just a damn shame that they are willing to let people rape it like they have with all the movies.
@@TheRealAdaWong that is pathetic when you consider who really liked and promoted these trash ass movies? Oh yeah. The same people part of the agenda who happen to have social influence… why the f do we support this shit again?
Maybe the 'I have a pen' line was about how a pen is mightier than the sword, which was gun in Evelyne's case? But then again that's a compliment to the writing team :D
yeah idk about that. Don't seem like the brightest bunch, unless their goal was to have every Resident Evil fan hate the show far more than any of the movies
The notion that Resident Evil having campy dialogue = it's okay to have unfunny/out of place millennial humor is the most stupid talking point to come out of this
When you are at that point in life telling yourself: “Come on, there is no way this is worse than Welcome to RC” and then you watch the thing. Undeniably the worst Resident Evil project I’ve seen to date. The first two Anderson movies are masterpieces in comparison.
I actually like the first two as guilty pleasures, and they are good for laughs as well. This new stuff is insulting in a way that Jill saying "I'm good, but not as good as you" to Anderson's fanfic mary sue wife (aka god) could never be.
@@MikeJones-qn1gz it really is mind boggling but yeh somehow those movies aged better then any other live action resident evil project not counting the canceled Arklay series
I really think that Resident Evil needs a more intimate approach to their film/show adaptations. A story in a mansion following a single protagonist for example. This whole pharmacy clone global domination reminds me of RE6 lol they’re doing too much. I really think they should start with some zombies in a mansion.
@@Silphiroth Any game that lets you scissor your coop partner when you're not breakdance firing your shotgun or judo chopping zombies is automatically fun. Good? Maybe not so much. (I love Resi 6 and it's gameplay mechanics.)
Agree. Make a mansion zombie show and focus on telling an isolated story, like the first game. Don't focus on umbrella and lore, focus on the characters, the mansion setting, and the horror elements. The director should treat it like it won't get a second season.
The Resident Evil Umbrella Conspiracy novel could work as a great template for a movie. I literally don't understand how Hollywood hasn't figured that out yet.
@@josephbyrn5700 woke hollywood is so woke that my beliefs are no longer my own and Im happily prescribed to Joy because Hollywood makes all my decisions for me.
The reason, supposedly, people in zombie media don't use the word "zombie" is because it allegedly sounds silly or takes the viewer out of the experience. Personally I want to know what lobotomy victims they heard into test screenings, having to pause the movie periodically to stop them gnawing on their chairs, to get that impression. Like what brain disease would make people in a contemporary setting calling things that resembles zombies a deal breaker, but people going around saying "ugh these damned *walkers*" is completely fine, immersion maintained. Only time the "don't say zombie" thing was valid was in Shaun of the Dead, where there was the plot reason that the z-word freaked the main character out.
@Austin Downing There are so many different names for zombies in so many different pieces of entertainment. Especially in Walking Dead where there are like 10 or 12 different names that people use across the entire franchise; which is only made worse when you learn that some of the names, like roamer, lurker, etc, are used based on the behavior of the walkers. With walkers being the bog standard zombies, roamers being the ones that like their name implies roam around, and lurkers being the ones that hide behind things and basically act as ambushers. That combined with all of the other nicknames used in TWD and its IP in general; from freaks, geeks, monsters, biters, and even zombies from earlier in the comics. There just aren't many good and snappy names left out there to use and at this point I want a serious zombie movie, and not one of the comedy ones like Scouts Guide or Shaun of the Dead, to just use the word zombie. Is that too much to ask?
You know what’s funny? It feels like more effort went into the marketing for this show than the show itself. Look up the 3D advertisement with the Licker breaking out of its cell. Or the public staging scene of a zombie getting infected and breaking out into the crowd. It’s awesome stuff, sadly focused on a show that just plain sucks.
Oh man, I was waiting for this. This show seemed like the showrunners read the print on the box of the first 3 games and were like "yeah, we can make a show out of this" and somehow got the funding to create a whole show.
This series was truly master class cinema. The scene where Lance Reddick knocks on someone's door, has Dr. Michael Morbius open up, only to have him insult Lance's character was incredible plot development. It was only surpassed by Lance's follow up line: "Looks like.... the resident evil.". The entire room stood up and had a standing ovation for the rest of the series' runtime. I never experienced something like that ever before.
That's what's insane about it all. The first RE game was so simple in plot, very late 80s, early 90s sci-fi zombie scenario. There is no reason why in 15+ years, there has not been one good adaptation of it. The first RE movie from 2002 came somewhat close, they just needed Jill and Chris there instead of Alice. In Apocalypse the woman who played Jill looked so much like her from RE3 (but got outshined and shoved aside to show how "bad ass" Alice was compared to her). It's just pathetic that they make something so complicated when it's origin is so simple lol.
Jill and Chris as mains, Barry and Rebecca as support, other S.T.A.R.S. people as redshirts to die. Get some puzzles, some iconic moments and enemies, big tyrant battle at the end, done. No clue why they decided to butcher WTRC by shoving 2 into it. Either make each game a movie or just make the plot of the first 3 games + 0 (at the end or something like a bonus episode or two) into a series. Why they absolutely refuse to do so is just baffling.
I feel the same, atleast welcome to Racoon city had something to do with the actual lore, granted it didn’t work but hey they atleast did some homework. It’s like assigning a boom report to a class and they all didn’t read it except 1 guy who you can tell only skimmed it but you give them a B for effort
@@MikeJones-qn1gz no they didnt they didnt get nothing right at least here they didnt try n change the lore its not a good story and plot holes and questionable motavates but not as bad as i thought but welcome to raccon was the biggest piece of shit to ever have resident evil name
@@Everan614 i mean it not the actual wesker i mean don't get me wrong it would of been better if he was his own character and not some wesker clone maybe a scientists who was a associate of wesker but u gonna compare that to welcome to raccon where they retcon every character and story ?
From what I researched the team behind this wanted to make their own zombie show but knew that no one would pick it up as is so they bought the right to R.evil to make a show and then threw in a few references that were surface level and called it a day.
IF that's true, screw that noise. I wish companies would just take a chance and go through with the original idea instead of dragging a previously owned property through the mud. This is why the 90s and early 00s had so many neat movies and shows that were risk taking and it seems that in the past few decades, studios are too scared to let new ideas come out and test the waters I mean heck, even if this show wasn't Resident Evil, it still would more than likely suck because it wouldn't change how awful the writing was but it would be judged on it's own merit at the very least.
This should be one of the easiest concepts to adapt to a movie or television series Somehow they completely botch it with every attempt Literally all you need is this basic premise A team of attractive special forces members are trapped inside a spooky Mansion in the woods filled with monsters and have to fight their way out while uncovering a conspiracy involving an evil pharmaceutical company That's it. That's all you need to do. Nothing more, nothing less. I think this is one of the cases where fans of the franchise would be more than happy to literally just see a one-to-one adaptation of The game's plot and characters. You don't need to try and have your own unique twist on it. It would appeal to fans of the game, and it would be entertaining for people who were not familiar with the source material because it's just a simple and fun little horror story I have no idea what the Netflix writers were smoking when they wrote this script, but it is way off the rails
@Bully Rivera we'll have to agree to disagree I think condensing the plot and events of RE1 into a 90-120 min film would work That George Romero script was pretty good
@Bully Rivera I think you would just have to work in really figuring out everything that had been going on with what umbrella was doing. And just try and have good scenes with tension and scares The basic premise to any Resident Evil game is pretty simple, but the lower when you're playing is coming in usually through reading all those documents Otherwise I really wouldn't say that 2 and 3 have all that much more to offer for baseline plot The umbrella conspiracy is where it gets interesting. Either way all of these adaptations just end up messing around and changing too much for no real good reason Something like welcome to raccoon City is mostly just filled with Easter eggs that reference the series rather than really trying to be faithful to the source material
The thing for me is , Jade was really really really hard to root for. Most of the time everything she did confused or made me upset to see. I also hate how nobody talks about the shower scene or her covered in blood so often . Like the t-virus is not something you can just while off like dirt. She showers with her mouth open , blood flowing all over her eyes and mouth and I'm just pointing at my screen yelling "infected , infected , infected!!!!" So many scenes she should have been eaten but the zombies seriously just stand there . And I guess we drop the zombies being blind b.s. because how did the zombie smell her to walk through fire ? Shouldn't he only be smell burning flesh and smoke and not the 2 drops of blood they were tracking ? Cause they didn't see her remember?! They smelled 2 drops of blood ! Ugh this damn show omg. And there was totally a way to make the black clone of Wesker work . He could have just been a different child in the Wesker program that didn't seem to have a reaction to the DNA rewrite b.s. they did to the kids to make them candidates for the Arian race thing they were doing? Like it's kinda a point in Wesker's backstory , he even did the experiment to Jill kinda with testing and made her blonde with blue eyes and changed her skin tone . Literally that's off the top of my head and they even touch on genetic manipulation in this , like the pieces are there . I would have loved some bullshit Netflix origin connecting the blind zeros evolving into some ....idk "crimson zero" and then into a licker . They even could have had mother zero be some reference to the female licker canceled mutation from the outbreak series . I honestly don't care about the Zootopia line. I expected worse tbh . She was making an effort to embarrass her dad so it semi works . I just don't understand her hatred of daddy Wesker . Like what exactly does he do wrong ? They moved ? Well fuck is that all it takes to piss a kid off ? Also they knew their dad is a scientist, they knew he takes their blood, blood needs to be stored in a fridge or else it goes bad. I've yet to see a lab that didn't keep their blood in a fridge . Why were the girls so "ermergerd!!!! Dad has our blood?! Wtf?!" , But you saw him take it... You knew he takes it ?! What ?! Is Jade’s beef literally that her dad works and she wants more daddy time ? Then why not accept when he offers it ? Why push him away and then bitch that "dad is talking to my sister and not me but I hate when he tries to talk to me !!!!!" I wish they would just go make a side story with a not favorite character and give them new light connecting it to the games. Like fuck it , wtf billy doing right now?! Make a live action of Billy fighting Zombies with a brand new villain connected to umbrella or tricell with maybe some vocals from characters in the game . Like a phone call with the VA of Leon for the fans to cream to. Show like 6 bow from game and maybe 2 random new ones, obligatory tyrant, licker, and or Cerberus, and end it with the main villain becoming some big ass fuck with an eyeball somewhere. No using names of characters for the sake of it , including DeviantArt oc disguised as cringe descendents or super humans .
In a way, Jade is a bit of a Mary Sue. But unlike the standard Sue who is super powerful, is more of a case of "I am extremely dumb, I can literally massacre an entire family for no reason, and nobody would ask nor judge me about it". Now add that young Jade is generic beachy teenager, while old Jade is plain dumbass, and is just more and more annoying
I mean, to be fair, a lot of zombie stuff does this. Like, there's a scene in season two of Telltale's The Walking Dead where the main character rams a knife she typically uses to kill zombies into a can and then eats the can's contents. Then there's another scene where she falls into and nearly drowns in a river that zombies have undoubtedly been in.
At first I read the title as “It’s Not as Bad as You Thought” and I was like “Jared, nooooo”. I only managed to watch the first three episodes. I thought it made Welcome to Racoon City look like The Godfather. It was soooo bad.

Man those 3 recent attempts at adaptions got worse and worse with each attempt. Honestly if they wanted to dramatize resident evil they could have made a show about the Spencer mansion up to its downfall. Or even that backstory between Spencer and Miranda in RE8. I don’t get the hate for the centipede in regards to it being there. Giant moths were an enemy in RE2 and so are a bunch of animals. My issue is the bad CG and lazy camera work in that scene. Great video as usual dude! 💙
That’s what I said, covering the 80’s and 90’s would have went perfectly. It would still have corporate conspiracy, cold blooded murder, mystery, all in a small town ambient. They could have easily tied in a much more pleasant and natural 90’s cinematography and aesthetic like the X-Files instead of forcing the 90’s revival style to mirror the culture. It could have even tied into the latest reboot WTRC and would have competed with Stranger Things, but I could tell this project was a flop from the moment they announced it.
@@TheRealAdaWong Yeah for sure. There are ways to CW the show in a good way. But they think they’re better than the game writers and end up making it cringe or boring.
I work in television on the floor, twelve to eighteen hours a day with the actors, directly under the director. Shit like this reeks of a production having far too many producers, I wish they would just give a movie or series the creative control of someone who genuinely cares for the source material. The source material deserves it. Hell, I'd show up to work everyday knowing it was in good hands if you were directing it. You have proven that you will sooner rather than later outgrow UA-cam, you've got a lot more to offer the world.
I second this notion. Avalanche clearly is a fan, has the right attitude at the series, and knows the source material down pat of the original games and the creative vision for it (especially the zombies which I agree with him, should look like rotting corpses walking around). I feel that if they wanted to finally get their butt in gear and finally make a PROPER Resident Evil adaptation, at least of the first 2-3 games, they definitely need to get a hold of Avalanche for it as a director, he'd do the series proper justice.
When even Avalanche Reviews, the most wholesome survival horror expert out there that can find positives in absolutely anything - hates your stupid show... There's absolutely no salvaging it
On the note of Jade being responsible for almost every death, Billie actually does call her out on the last episode on how for someone trying to save lives, she gets everyone killed, even hinting that Bert was offed somehow by her doing. All in all, Billie perfectly bringing full circle "The Fucking Jade Show."
It doesn't matter if you put a lamp shade on a pile of corpses, it won't help with the stench. Billie didn't perfectly call it, the writers spent all their time on TV Tropes hoping it would aid them in their craft.
I literally lost all sort of hope for this show as soon as they introduced Wesker as being a family man. The dude is literally just a stereotypical villain of the series and is so easy to do so who thought it was a good idea to go “make that dude a loving father”. Studios seriously gotta stop lending their IPs to directors that think changing literally everything people love about the original series is a good idea somehow.
@@uhoh6706 the original design and character literally shows up acting and looking just how everyone remembers him from the games. I don't quite get the complaint, they explainin that they are 2 different people.
So for the people who actually loved this awful show, did you honestly enjoy the CW drama and bickering between the two incredibly unstable 14 year old girls? I'm jw how people can look past it, unless they are, you know, 14 year old girls.
Did i loved the show? No but i liked it. Do i hate those two 14 year olds? yes especially jade since she is always commanding what to do and not and literally people around her dies but for me its ok what i only loved was the mentioning of ada wong
As a South African, my biggest complaint is how South Africa is portrait: no burglar bars on the window and doors, our yards are fenced off, even in cities that are run by a company like Sasol, we have many pot holes, our schools are outdoor buildings and usually no cafeterias. We wear in all schools school uniforms. Our homes do not have basements. And I can go on. Not to mention the “police” in the story. I can go on. And not one teenager in my country can hack like that guy did.
When that caterpillar moment happened I was like WAIT grave digger? Then saw the caterpillar and laughed. I watched this and had to take it as a comedy for it to even be bareable.
The initial publicity photos for the show were already huge red flags for me. Although I like Lance Reddick, everything else about those early photos made it look like a new show on The CW, not a faithful RE adaptation. Honestly, I think the thought process that went into making this show was "Teenagers like to play video games, so we must make a show aimed at teenagers!" It's pretty clear Hollywood has no idea what gamers want or even what type of people play video games.
I still find it hilarious they raceswapped the guy who is obsessed with eugenics. This show had 9 writers....even the CW rejected them when they pitched a spinoff show of Supernatural called Bloodlines.
The dumbest aspect about the adaptation, and the thing that undermines the whole project, is the editing. Switching from the past to the future forces the audience to follow two separate plots that don't connect organically so it turns into a chore trying to remember all the plot threads. Not that it matters because the editing also dissolves all tension about the plots and reveals answers to many mysteries, some of which weren't even set up yet. For example, Future Billie tells Jade that she mocked their Dad as he died in her custody. Several episodes later, in the past, the audience is lead to believe that their Dad died in the explosion he triggered yet we already know he dies year later. The same happens with Billie, when the show toys with the idea that she may die but it's already revealed that she's alive in the future by episode 2. The show is an utter mess. It's as if the writers forgot what info they delivered to the audience. Based off the ending, the show will continue to tell the story in this infuriating manner so season 2 will be as bad if not worse, that is if they get a second season.
You were very polite when mentioning the callbacks like moonlight sonata.. my first thought was" in the event that something happens to him, this was his contingency?" He left a "in case of fire" contingency, in the form of a puzzle. Expecting his daughters that have no knowledge as to what he does, to figure it out. To reiterate Wesker gave his daughters what they need to escape, but made sure they went through a convoluted puzzle to get it
this may sound odd, but the fact that the producer wants a milla jovovich cameo, really does say a lot about ther understanding of the fandom and the games
I don't know what's funnier the fact that they were aloud to write that Zootopia joke in the script or the thought of this show actually having a script to begin with.
I stayed far away from this, forgetting about it then you came in Jared and all I said was "FUCK!" At this point, it seems the big wigs at Hollywood aren't going to stop and see the damn point of what we want in RE. It's like a big, bloody, endless cycle of death and rebirth but in a very bad way with how RE is working on the silver screen. Sorry you had to go through this. Yup, let's forget about it.... completely.
"Night of the living m'fing dead." Lines like that is why Avalanche is my favorite RE related channel. Jared shares so many of my similar views on the series, it's crazy. When I saw the notification for this video pop up I couldn't wait to hear his opinion. And he didn't disappoint. Thanks for a good laugh for the day brother.
I like that you were so distracted with the other bad, you didn't notice the Crocodile attacked Billy, got flustered and went into the ocean, attacked Jade and hubby on their little boat for no reason, then, after Jade was where she needed to be story-wise, went back on land to continue attacking Billy.
The people that defend this show on Twitter leading up to it's release really irritate me. They take these streamers who do nothing but shill and use them to generate hype for a show everyone and their mother knew would be dog shit. The "give it a chance guys" can kiss my ass, every resident evil show will be shit until proven otherwise. Why the hell do they make this stuff anyways? Who really needs a show about a game you like? You can see all the people slurping up the last of us show now and I know that's gonna be a dumbsters fire too
I actually think I could rescue this show as far as the writing goes. (This took me 5 mins of thought); here: Billie Wesker is killed by the Crocigator, Evelyn frees herself and escapes, she regains control of Umbrella, but she’s been deeply affected by her captivity and the trauma of killing her son, so she reaches out to Jade et al and offers them amnesty; they agree terms and are given a new location to settle and continue their research in peace; however, their agreement with Evelyn/umbrella ensures the continued development of Joy, which requires further testing of the T virus. They establish several new colonies/safe zones, whereby Umbrella facilitates the rehabilitation and development of infrastructure and commerce, these regions experience rapid population growth. In one of the colonies they’re conducting testing on Primates in order to see if they can “prompt” the T-virus “higher intelligence” adaptation; they’re successful in doing so but accidentally discover that they’ve essentially cured their test subjects of the T-virus symptoms. Unfortunately as they’re celebrating this accomplishment and begin executing a massive deployment of teams to administer “the cure”; they overlook the development of their test subjects who have become fully autonomous and hyper intelligent, these Apes communicate using sign language and escape from the facility; they hide out in giant forest for a few generations and ultimately kill or enslave all the remaining humans and rebuild civilization from the ground up…the sequel will be called Resident Monkeys-planet of the chimps.
I'm so tired of companies turning the writers fanfiction into a tv show or a movie. I know a lot of games cant translate well into movies since they can be to long and convoluted, but that doesn't mean make stuff up. Learn what to keep, learn what to throw out
The only thing more hilarious than the show is the sheer amount of mental gymnastics some folks online do to convince themselves it was good or to then spew out every trademarked internet terms like 'toxic' and 'haters' to dismiss legitimate criticism for this utter piece of fucking shit. The literally only redeemable thing was Lance's performance during some scenes.
Hahahaha the “dollar store Blade“ comment got me. The first thing I thought when I saw the image of the guy in full Wesker attire, was that it looked like if you invite your middle aged aunt to a goth rave and this is what she thought would be appropriate to wear.
Sorry, Avalanche, but you’re wrong…It’s a million times worse than I thought lmao I honestly only made it 2 episodes in and it hurt too much to keep going. It’s at the point where I feel an amateur B movie adaptation with cheesy acting would be more faithful to the games.
The problem is as it has always been, it's the same producer they've had since the first Resident Evil movie from Paul W.S. Anderson. And that dude only cares about owning the license, not doing the license justice :/ so they keep releasing dumpsterfires and no one can stop them because they own the license
Ngl, you saved me from re-subbing to Netflix just to satisfy my morbid curiosity, I didn't take the hint with the movie and it left disappointed with alot of the decisions made. With this one I'm out, and I have you to thank!
As soon as you see that a resident evil movie is depicting an actual apocalypse you can dismiss it as a garbage fire by writers who dont play resident evil.
Thank you for this. I know it can be a littly dodgy to do this kind of review, showing scenes along with your opinion of them, but it's exactly what I've been looking for. I want an RE fan's perspective, but it's also simply not something I'm ever going to sit down and watch myself. The podcast style where people are talking about scenes I'll never see just doesn't work for me.
Instead of random kids they could of did a show around jake millers with him finding out more about his father and such as he goes to the places wesker has been to before, would of been better in my opinion
I remember one of the daughters telling her father how much she loves Zootopia porn. Really uncomfortable and makes me wonder if the writers are self projecting here.
and I thank you for reviewing this show. There's one thing I looked forward to with each bad RE adaptation or even just the RE games in general, hearing your opinion on them all. This show basically was not what I wanted, again. I wanted a proper adaptation of Resident Evil where to retell the events of RE1 with some different takes, seeing how to include those puzzles in a fun, cinematic way, how Chris and Jill handled the monsters from a story-telling perspective versus a game one. I also like the idea of what if stories with the canon material as an adaptation, but I seriously want a somewhat accurate retelling of the games first now. Of course, I also agree that the more you think about this show, the more problems appear. Like for instance, I can't concede in my head a zombie apocalypse happening in the RE gameverse after all of the things that happened prior. Nor that Jade and Billie Wesker didn't know about the zombie outbreaks occurring where there were multiple sources mentioning what went on in Raccoon City. Umbrella went under for a reason prior to RE4. There was another outbreak in Tall Oaks during RE6 and then the one in Vendetta. You can't make a show canon to the game universe and ignore events like this without backlash.
Honestly I was pretty interested in this show when it was first announced. THEN when it was released and I learned that the main character is named Wesker I just went "Oh..." and knew that it was not worth watching...
Honestly are we surprised movies and TV's can't get it right when the series itself has no idea what it wants to be these days? What I think would make a good movie though is RE1, but through the shoulder cams of STARS and the surveillance system of the mansion found footage style. Rough, grainy, raw with the mansion cams giving us those classic PS1 environment angles.
There is literally licenced source material. Even Anderson took from it. It's like they know fans aren't going to be into what they made but they do it hoping that if they chuck enough shit onto the screen maybe someone will like it.
-The story will involve this scientist who works for Umbrella, pretty much made the virus that led to the outbreak, and he is a father. -Ah yes, Birk... -Albert Wesker, correct!
Netflix could've just given this project to David Fincher and adapt the first resident evil game as a film or series. Instead they gave it to the most incompetent writers possible and just wasted all the budget for another generic post apocalyptic storyline with dumb protagonists.
this show is truly underrated i love how wesker grabs leon and tells him 'its wesker time' after flying off to go after a clone of walter white from breaking bad named: karl heisenberg while he says to wesker in return: 'its breakin' time'; had me in tears. i expect this to have a cult following in the near future along the likes of cowboy bebop the netflix adaptation
It's so sad how true this may well become. Just watch, in 5 years you're gonna have people who didn't experience the original games or never had much interest in RE to begin with, are gonna come out with videos talking about how great this show actually was but was "wrongly hated" or "overhated" or something like that. I can see the thumbnails already lol.
It's really this simple, if you want a story to include the 3 games all you need to do is make it from a civilian perspective. You take an average Joe and have the same news stories in the resi 1 intro start setting waves throughout the city to kick start the story. Then you can have the outbreak in raccoon city but instead of being a S.T.A.R.S badass you would have this regular person that's not equipped with guns, doesn't know how to handle guns or even really even defend himself to help create the suspense and the threat of zombies. On to the zombies , start by making them look more like the original designs from re1 and re2, that sickly pale rotten skin, those cold white dead eyes and those painful moans...you can make zombies scary again, it's really not that difficult. Then you can scatter your call backs and Easter eggs. A regular person in this situation would obviously go to the police station to get help, during the journey to the station can easily be suspenseful by having this regular person sneak around or get cornered and use the environment and things around them to help escape. Once getting to the station it would be empty and messed up from Mr x and nemesis destroying the place but you wouldn't need to see them...just what they left behind. The whole story can be about this person just trying to survive but ultimately not making it out because the city was destroyed. You can show how this regular civilian experienced the whole situation, how the media played a bigger role in masking it up and idk stuff like that...it's not that hard to do I don't understand why they just dont take a risk with it instead of making it so basic and lame.
I don't like how the girls treat their father, I get he's supposed to be Wesker but he takes real good care of his his daughters and they just treat him like garbage, in fact the show in general seems to dislike fathers.
I feel like that's fairly realistic though. Teenagers rebelling against their parents. It's a tired rope, but it's fairly accurate. You're right though. His actions definitely don't deserve their reactions.
@@AvalancheReviews I'd like to ask you a question. I seem to be alone in this camp that should they Remake Resident Evil Zero before they do Resident Evil 1 and then have Rebecca make more sense because of the actions of 0.
I love how you said straight away what your expectations were. I was approaching this show the same way, I could not expect a great adaptation after reading the synopsis, but all I wanted was a decent and entertaining zombie flick. And I completely do not understand some people (including RE content creators!) defending this show. Surely there is a lot of stupid criticism centered around race swapping and overall lack of connection with the franchise, but these are just surface level "problems" in comparison to overall low quality of writing and show's presentation. You've summed it up pretty well, it's a show made for no one. Teens will hate shitty characters and "hey fellow kids" popculture references, there is little action to consider it a good action show, let alone horror. And the meta commentary that they seem to touch upon in few moments, is still worse than the worst Black Mirror episode.
@Austin Downing Did MCU Nick Fury suck? Or Heimdall, or new MJ or Commisioner Gordon from recent Batman movie? If the character is bad then it’s the problem of writing, direction of actor’s performance, not his/her color of the skin.
I'm actually surprised you didn't mention the fact that Evelyn is the daughter of James Marcus and how they just shoehorned her ass into the OG game story by simply saying her dad wasn't there for her and kept her out of his work. Or the fact that the show is supposed to be a "continuation" of the games and yet leave so many plot holes opened involving umbrella. First of all, the latest umbrella was Blue umbrella not just normal umbrella. And blue umbrella was no longer a pharmaceutical company but instead a B.O.W task force set on fixing their mistakes. Also they made it seem like the world wasnt aware of what happened in the original raccoon city with umbrella and the missle strike. The world knew that umbrella was evil, and knew they were the reason raccoon city was nuked, but what the world didn't know was that the US government had a hand in off of it as well. There were more but damn -_-
The acting from the main character playing the hero was so dead, I like the story leading up but the heroism of the lady playing the main character killed the show, also the amount of people she gets killed then sends her daughter on a island with a giant crocodile when she runs to the boat to save herself, she also tells a parent to leave her child. She faces of with nemesis type crawlers and doesn't get killed, got the pregnant women killed at the end, so many throw offs dead. Why did umbrella want jade so much just cause her sister wanted her blood, all them people died from umbrella just for that lol cmon
On bus, no headphones, watching anyway in silence and just imagining you repeatedly taking the Lord's name in vain. I'll watch again later with sound and see how close I was.
Between your excellent review as well as the reviews by Score PN....I think I gave the series way too much credit when I first watched it. This show is a huge dumpster fire. They would have been better served not using RE characters.
Dude, Avalanche I was thinking about writing to you to cover this topic for a week now! I've been binge watching your resident evil reviews hoping that you'd do this. Thanks and sorry for your sacrifice lmao
I tried giving this show a chance, and was even hopeful given the games massive ‘about face’…but the moment a giant caterpillar showed up, I checked out. All of this feels like people, who have yet again, never played the actual games, just went through a checklist of things. Then went through that list and tried to apply their ‘logic’ to certain things. I.E. The crocodile scene is a perfect example of this disconnect. It’s like whoever forced this, saw the thing about a crocodile in the sewer and thought ‘that doesn’t make sense…*looks up where their environment would normally be* let’s make this more realistic, he should be out in the plains - not a sewer’.
I love how they seriously expected us to take it seriously that they somehow managed to snag that giant alligator, find perfect sized bindings to hook it up to the ship, all while they somehow managed to rewire its brain so it somehow doesn’t attack the crew and it can somehow recognize all of them individually. Why make something as simple as “big alligator” so convoluted?!?!
At most I say it's okay. Every point made here is pretty spot on and there is more problems with plot holes. Examples, Billie says to Jade dad died asking for you yet dad died in a explosion in NRC unless Bert is now Dad. Evelyn is in the tent but does she die? Do they extract her is she just forever just in safe mode on the tablet? It's just kinda slapped together at times.
You know they have no idea how to make a good Resident Evil live action show/movie when the MOST ACCURATE thing we've gotten is Welcome to Racoon City!
The problem we keep getting with Resident Evil/Biohazard films is that we aren't getting a cinematic interpretation of our beloved franchise - we're getting FanFic screenplays ffs! This show was such an odd disappointment.. It feels like they were trying to make a show that brought in both young and old fans, but OMG did they faceplant the landing here lmfao! It's like they tried to do a more raw and semi-realistic verison of Milla Jovovich's character and post-apocalypse story for the old fans, and then not knowing what new fans are into they just went for Stranger Things RE Edition with teenage girls because maybe girls will like it and teen boys will just have the hots for the girls? I dont freakin know, this this is a hot garbage mess lmfao! Like, I can kinda see what they were thinking when they made the decisions, which makes it even funnier, because why on earth did they think this was a good idea
I think this obsession with calling zombies something other than "zombies" partly stems from filmmakers copying George A. Romero's predilection for calling zombies ANYTHING but "zombies" in his movies ("ghouls," "walkers," "deadheads," etc.), but boss man himself said he only started doing that because he genuinely didn't think of them as zombies; he thought he had created a whole new monster, and he kept doing it because, in the world of his stories (the Romero Cinematic Universe, if you will), there is no zombie pop culture, so his characters wouldn't know to call them "zombies" in the first place.
I knew this review was coming, and I was buckling up for it. Netflix series is like a red light warning to anything it adapts, especially so if it's live action
I remember reading somewhere that some of the people who worked on this show, think they could get to season 4 to include the stuff from RE8 Yes you read that right...
When it comes to RE and smart zombies I want to see progression in the virus. Also correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t understand the progression with the mutation concerning consistency. Aren’t T-Virus inflicted zombies supposed to in the end turn into Lickers or was that just selective cases within REmake 2? (Edit) Both siblings suck ass but Jade has to be one of the most annoying characters in the show.
When you pitch a generic idea for a “zombie” show to your Netflix buddy but it’s so bad that they need to dress it up in the skin of another ip to pass it off to the department.
Holy shit… you’re right
This really feels like what actually happened.
From what i've read from Reddit:
It is *confirmed* they pitched a whole different idea that retooled as an existing IP, which understandably _barely_ resembles the source material.
Blame it on the cheap trash studios that still hold the license property: *Constantin Film/Screen Gems* - _same_ ones that made the other live-actions previously.
What a joke. A mansion with zombies and creatures seems very difficult to make.

i know right? night of the living dead (and it's remake) did perfectly fine with an even smaller setting. it's all I want.
It's like there's some rule we don't know about where you're not allowed to adapt the games in any way faithfully.
@@santaclawz4431 they have the book to do that. If Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings could make it to the big screen, Bio Hazard can for sure.
Even with all the horrors he has witnessed, he can't even handle this.

I really think that Resident Evil needs a more intimate approach to their film/show adaptations. A story in a mansion following a single protagonist for example. This whole pharmacy clone global domination reminds me of RE6 lol they’re doing too much. I really think they should start with some zombies in a mansion.
I think you're absolutely right. They've proven they can't handle a big cinematic world.

Plopping people into a mansion with zombies is apparently a Herculean tier task to directors apparently

It says a lot that a UA-camr can now make a full time career out of making fun of bad content , pretty sure it's a fairly recent thing
Do you agree that as long as states like California and Texas remain independent, they will continue to produce more bad media than good media?
I think Jared's worst night terror would be if resident evil games were based solely on this series from here on out.

Yep, they also pitched..... "and they arent white males" and the suits were like YEP HERES MONEY
To be fair, if they actually read the back of the boxes, it might be at least a little more accurate. I would wager they didn't even get that far.
They didn't even look at the cover
This series was truly master class cinema. The scene where Lance Reddick knocks on someone's door, has Dr. Michael Morbius open up, only to have him insult Lance's character was incredible plot development. It was only surpassed by Lance's follow up line: "Looks like.... the resident evil.". The entire room stood up and had a standing ovation for the rest of the series' runtime. I never experienced something like that ever before.
Its funny, because you would THINK there's nothing easier to faithfully adapt (and quite inexpensively) than the first Resident Evil game.
I find Lance Reddick playing copies of himself as funny as Sylvester Stallone playing different versions of himself in Spy Kids 3

Source: trust me bro
I mean I can believe that. That’s what it seems like
IF that's true, screw that noise. I wish companies would just take a chance and go through with the original idea instead of dragging a previously owned property through the mud. This is why the 90s and early 00s had so many neat movies and shows that were risk taking and it seems that in the past few decades, studios are too scared to let new ideas come out and test the waters
I mean heck, even if this show wasn't Resident Evil, it still would more than likely suck because it wouldn't change how awful the writing was but it would be judged on it's own merit at the very least.
This should be one of the easiest concepts to adapt to a movie or television series
Somehow they completely botch it with every attempt
Literally all you need is this basic premise
A team of attractive special forces members are trapped inside a spooky Mansion in the woods filled with monsters and have to fight their way out while uncovering a conspiracy involving an evil pharmaceutical company
That's it. That's all you need to do. Nothing more, nothing less.
I think this is one of the cases where fans of the franchise would be more than happy to literally just see a one-to-one adaptation of The game's plot and characters. You don't need to try and have your own unique twist on it. It would appeal to fans of the game, and it would be entertaining for people who were not familiar with the source material because it's just a simple and fun little horror story
I have no idea what the Netflix writers were smoking when they wrote this script, but it is way off the rails
@Bully Rivera we'll have to agree to disagree
I think condensing the plot and events of RE1 into a 90-120 min film would work
That George Romero script was pretty good
@Bully Rivera I think you would just have to work in really figuring out everything that had been going on with what umbrella was doing. And just try and have good scenes with tension and scares
The basic premise to any Resident Evil game is pretty simple, but the lower when you're playing is coming in usually through reading all those documents
Otherwise I really wouldn't say that 2 and 3 have all that much more to offer for baseline plot
The umbrella conspiracy is where it gets interesting.
Either way all of these adaptations just end up messing around and changing too much for no real good reason
Something like welcome to raccoon City is mostly just filled with Easter eggs that reference the series rather than really trying to be faithful to the source material
@Bully Rivera I would have opened the emergency exit and jumped out
@Bully Rivera you're saving them from possibly ever viewing the film in the future

Damn, it would be great if you ended up being proven right. Thanks man.
I had such a blast watching this show that just fails to be a decent show, let alone a RE show. Lance's performance slays me.
The last episode had me so mad that I literally screamed out loud. My best friend and I watched it together and he could not stop laughing at my pain.
When even Avalanche Reviews, the most wholesome survival horror expert out there that can find positives in absolutely anything - hates your stupid show...
There's absolutely no salvaging it
Jade: Super smart scientist
Also Jade: Doesn't put a muzzle or gag on a zombie
On the note of Jade being responsible for almost every death, Billie actually does call her out on the last episode on how for someone trying to save lives, she gets everyone killed, even hinting that Bert was offed somehow by her doing. All in all, Billie perfectly bringing full circle "The Fucking Jade Show."
But by that point, Billie had become so unlikable for me, I liked Jade better than her. XD
Well, someone obviously didn't finish the season as that is brought up and explained
@@TWproduc Just because he was a clone doesn’t change the fact it’s a terrible character change that betrays the original characters design
@@uhoh6706 the original design and character literally shows up acting and looking just how everyone remembers him from the games.
I don't quite get the complaint, they explainin that they are 2 different people.
@@TWproduc not sure why anyone would subject themselves to ending a horrible show.
Jesus Christ dude do you even know what "literally" means?
So for the people who actually loved this awful show, did you honestly enjoy the CW drama and bickering between the two incredibly unstable 14 year old girls? I'm jw how people can look past it, unless they are, you know, 14 year old girls.
Did i loved the show? No but i liked it. Do i hate those two 14 year olds? yes especially jade since she is always commanding what to do and not and literally people around her dies but for me its ok what i only loved was the mentioning of ada wong
Idk why but I almost lost it when you said CHUBSTER 😂
When are we going to get your review, suzi?
As usual, my only comedy is unintentional comedy.
Shut up
Leave Ada out of this mess, either it has to be Lily Gao or we’re going to end up with Ada on the screen, and Carla on tv 😭
I loved the part where Leon said "this resident is, evil" sent shivers up my spine☠️
Let's not forget that leading up this this show's release they claimed that this was going to be canon to the games
Finally, the teen drama this series was always missing
To reiterate Wesker gave his daughters what they need to escape, but made sure they went through a convoluted puzzle to get it
13:13 I like how you're explaining the series, the image of Leon is just speechless about it! 😂
this may sound odd, but the fact that the producer wants a milla jovovich cameo, really does say a lot about ther understanding of the fandom and the games
Without a doubt
I don't know what's funnier the fact that they were aloud to write that Zootopia joke in the script or the thought of this show actually having a script to begin with.
The show’s existence is comedy in and off itself.
I don’t expect adaptations to be 1:1 of the source material, but I don’t want to see fanfics either.
I stayed far away from this, forgetting about it then you came in Jared and all I said was "FUCK!"
At this point, it seems the big wigs at Hollywood aren't going to stop and see the damn point of what we want in RE.
When people say which would you rather watch, the Netflix Series or WTRC, I always pick WTRC. Why? Because it's an hour and half long. Not 8 hours.
(This took me 5 mins of thought); here:
Billie Wesker is killed by the Crocigator, Evelyn frees herself and escapes, she regains control of Umbrella, but she’s been deeply affected by her captivity and the trauma of killing her son, so she reaches out to Jade et al and offers them amnesty; they agree terms and are given a new location to settle and continue their research in peace; however, their agreement with Evelyn/umbrella ensures the continued development of Joy, which requires further testing of the T virus.
Lance Reddick is one of the few redeeming factors of this show.
Damn. I didn't know it was the same guy.
The show is such a dumpster fire that even Leon has to look away while watching it.
I remember one of the daughters telling her father how much she loves Zootopia porn. Really uncomfortable and makes me wonder if the writers are self projecting here.
She also told her sister she had a great ass so the writers like incest too apparently.
and I thank you for reviewing this show.
While the show may be awful, it did give us an Avalanche Reviews video, so all-in-all it's a total net positive!
Netflix:
“ this was the closest we could get to making an actual “look-alike” Wesker”
Netflix could've just given this project to David Fincher and adapt the first resident evil game as a film or series. Instead they gave it to the most incompetent writers possible and just wasted all the budget for another generic post apocalyptic storyline with dumb protagonists.
For a moment I was like, "Well this is an odd way to do the review" then I realized it was probably to avoid BS copyright.
this show is truly underrated i love how wesker grabs leon and tells him 'its wesker time' after flying off to go after a clone of walter white from breaking bad named: karl heisenberg while he says to wesker in return: 'its breakin' time'; had me in tears. i expect this to have a cult following in the near future along the likes of cowboy bebop the netflix adaptation
He actually said "it's weskin time"
It's really this simple, if you want a story to include the 3 games all you need to do is make it from a civilian perspective.
I can’t wait for season 2 I can’t wait to see how she ruins Ada’s life like everyone else’s
The only good part of that garbage is when Blade Wesker gets rid of those USS soldiers with his super powers.
There were more but damn -_-
They should have said James Marcus was too busy leeching off of Umbrella to care for her.
He definitely doesn't seem like the type to take the lord name in vein or cuss in general for that matter. He seems a lil more intelligent then that
I was just always left wondering where tf Chris, leon, jill, Claire, the entire bsaa was in this situation
@@uhoh6706 I mean don't they know about sewer gators stories.
I prefer Lance Reddick in the Horizon games as Sylence. 😂
They had the gall to call this thing "Resident Evil", with no stupid subtitle to let us know it isn't legit.
I remember reading somewhere that some of the people who worked on this show, think they could get to season 4 to include the stuff from RE8
Yes you read that right...
You pretending that black Wesker somehow made sense in order to avoid being called racist was kinda sad, tbh.
