The cinema was their curse, that idiotic bastard Hall Wallis who would continue to use them in the same way until they were dead. And both Jerry and Dean were tired of Wallis and of always being used in the cinema with the usual characters. But it was Wallis who paid and he was in charge.
Dean was thoroughly fed up with Lewis by the time he left in a rage, and told him what he thought of him. It was not "fun". Lewis was a bully, and really took advantage of Dean's kindness and good nature. But Dean was nobody's fool. He threatened to quit more than once, and once at least forced Lewis to fire the writers, or he was leaving. The writers were Lewis' choice; he dropped the excellent writers they already had, and hired people who would write more to Lewis' tune. Dean's agent had to deal with it, and went to tell Lewis he news, and later found out that Lewis taped their conversation and played it to the writers. Dean got what he wanted, but it was "open warfare" according to Angie Dickinson. I can't see anyone being able to work with Lewis for long without losing it; it's amazing that Dean did. However, at the end he did say to Lewis, "You're nothing to me but a FN dollar sign.", which was he absolute truth by that time. Dean had a wonderful comedic sense and great timing, very talented and extremely attractive and handsome. Jerry was quite frankly, jealous. I can't stand listening to that idiotic fake voice In their last appearance together which they were bound by contract to do, even though they had broken up, Jerry referred to Dean as the "pizza eater", and "the Italian street singer", and called him old. Never once do you hear Dean bring up any kind of Jewish joke, but Jerry did it to Dean. Jerry even called Dean a "fagola", which is kind of obvious. However, at the very end, Dean said "And now a few words from the village idiot", and that was the end. Dean's family and friends were all told never to mention Lewis' name in his presence, and journalists were told that if they brought him up in an interview, that they could leave. That lasted 20 years, until Sinatra forced a reconciliation, to raise money for he dystrophy cause. Jerry then took control of the narrative, writing a book called Dean and Jerry - A Love Story; while Dean rolled his eyes on Carson at the mention of a renewed friendship. Jerry managed to be dirty enough to say that Dean was a "reclusive alcoholic" in his last years, which was an absolute lie. However, according to Variety, fairly recently - Jerry was a disgusting rapist, as well as being a bully, a misogynist, and a nasty control freak.
