Apothecary white painted over a pure white base coat is the effect I think you're after, much like you then did on the stormtroopers and it works quite well for that. It's just designed to shade down white and is next to useless if you want to add to a darker pre-shade. And I'm 100% there with you for the hatred of batch painting.

Yeah. I might use the Apothecary White next time I do some cloth that I'd like to be white. I think it would work great for the subtle shading.
