I bought a house about a year ago and you would probably be surprised what you can acquire if you're constantly hunting for deals. I have effectively kitted out my 650sqft basement and only spent around 6k CAD. Some highlights of my purchases, buying a set of dumbells that were commercial grade urethane (5lb-100lb in 5lb incraments) from a show home at .20 cents per pound (retail, approximately $4.25 per/lb - they sold them because they were "greasy"). I bought a full set of weighted barbells with a steel, one piece welded rack, for about .50 cents per pound from a government surplus sale. I bought some weights from an estate sale for about 10% of market price. My dollar cost average is approximately 15-30% of retail and the vast majority of my stuff is either brand new or gently used. For somethings like chalk bowls, I built them myself to save money. The MOST expensive part of building a home gym is the flooring and large wall mirrors. If you're patient, the equipment and weights are stupid cheap.
