A much better way to do this with footage that has black/white BG is to go to effect/channel/channel combiner/ then set 'from' to max RGB and 'to' as alpha. then invert for the different colours - that way you have the alpha of what you need and more control to add additional blend settings, adjust the alpha and even comp the original footage back in
