- How To Replace Sway Bar Bushings due to noise, or failure. In this video I show you how to replace sway bar bushings on MK4 R32. The process is similar on all mk4 cars including Audi TT. Replacing sway bar bushings for squeaking noise is the most common. I am upgrading my sway bar bushings to polyurethane bushings

Your videos are awesome man! I did all the suspension work on my car and I saved a lot of money. Got an estimate to get the abs module, sway bar rollover links, bushings,and throttle body maintenance for almost $4000. Did all the work myself, replaced the abs module and most of the suspension (front and rear) along with struts for less than a $1000. My ride drives like new.

Another good tip for getting the bracket back in place after installing the new bushing is to use a 25mm long bolt.
I believe the OE bolts are M10*1.25*20 ( don't quote me on the first two dimensions ).
I ran to my friendly neighborhood big box store and bought some 25mm.
I used the 25mm to "pull" the top of the bracket closer ( I was having a beeotch of a time getting the OE bolt to catch the first couple of threads ).
Once the bracket was pulled closer, I backed the 25mm out and replaced it with the 20mm.
Actually, to tell the truth, I bought new 20mm bolts too.
Metric Grade 8.8, like .62 each.

I learned a lot on this video! and have helpful feedback: as people have noted it can be really tough to get the clamp close enough to start the bolt. Tonight I did my 2002 VW Jetta GLS Wagon(mK4). The non dealer brackets I purchased were not machined correctly and often won't align even when compressed; . So I just re used the OEM brackets. After much pain, I changed back to the old ones; helped a lot! a very lot! So Passenger side: jorgenson cabinet clamp center of the U bracket and the other end up front on the control arm with a pair of vice grips fastened on the control arm to prevent clamp slippage. Tighten her up and in goes the bolt by hand. The Drivers side: Steering wheel hard right and I used a smaller pair of long tipped needle nosed vice grips. Tip of the needle nose grabbing the U clamp with all of my strength to suck the clamp close enough to start the bolt by hand. In my case (Rubber) silicon grease and generous medium blue loctite on the bolts to prevent corrosion and make it easier to remove next time, and to lock it. Torque to spec. Don't forget to do a dry run with no bracket or bushing on the bolts to make sure they thread by hand easily and note the approximate angle! By the way no more noise on bumps but I am sure control arm bushings and struts are next. *Note to self, once again; OEM on these hard to get to jobs.
Have chrysler 300 - 2006 with 109,000 miles just replaced sway bar bushing and fixed the noise problem in front end.
Thank You for the HELPFUL hint COST $20 two bushing $80 dollars labor. car feels like NEW again.
A little dab of anti-seize compound on the bracket bolts and the connecting link bolts will save you from a lot of grief the next time the car needs the worn drop down links replaced. A little spray paint on those brackets will prevent them from rusting out and allowing the anti-sway bar (torsion bar) to flop around.

I'm in the garage right now installing these bushings and I forgot which way they went.
I will tell you it's a really easy job with the engine out though 😉

Man, thos poly bushings were much softer than mine. Mine, I had to put a screw driver in it to open it up and push REALLY hard lol. They were stiff. Fit awesome.
These were probably just a little harder than stock.
I had to replace mine but obviously whomever owned the vehicle before me put the wrong size on there and I didn't know that it had different size variations that came with this model vehicle from a 30 mm to a 32 mm. So I had to purchase a cheap calibrator tool to measure the diameter to get the right one. Thanks to this video I sway no more.

I did this on my Honda Odyssey last year. One of the easiest and least expensive diy things you can do to your car! It also stopped a noise coming from the front end.

I have a question I have a 2016 kia soul I bought new Bushings but mine is the Moog Rubber Bushings would they need to be lubed up or no.
Any specific type of lubricant to use or to avoid? Some of these need to be torqued down with the car on the ground, what are your thoughts on that?

Same thing possible on B6 Passat? Ecs spec sheet on oem 23mm sway bar bushing replacement shows illustration where dropping subframe is required and drilling out bracket. Thought it was as simple as you showed it.
Groovy baby! Easy fix to remedy a clunky front end. They may look fine but you're right, they will allow a clunky noise when going over bumps.

On the 2010 cobalt LS there are two options on the bushings. There is a 18mm and 24mm depending on sway bar thickness. Took me a while to find that out
Hi Charles. Did this same job with factory bushings on my MK4. there was no way I was going to get the proper bolt in as the clamp was too far away from where it need to be to get the bolt started...I used the bolt from the battery hold down (about 10mm longer) to get the clamp started. I didn't screw the clamp all the way down, left about 5mm space. Backed out the longer bolt and then used the proper one to fully seat the clamp. Thanks for all the videos and tips! :-)
I have had to do that before too. Good call on not leaving it in. Had one someone did that and it made a crazy noise. Took a day to find the issue.

Stock size, I "THINK" it was 21mm not 100% sure.
What type of lubricant or grease would you recommend?
Quick question. In my car I can easily access those bushings. Do i need to lift the wheels of the ground so the sway bar sits in a different position or is it ok if i do it with both wheels on the ground ? Thanks !
You hit it right on. Mine seems to be more pronounced when it is hot outside. Also when there is a passenger in the car. I changed out the driver side which was the side of the noise. Afterwards the noise went away. But I am going to change out the passenger side soon since the kit came in a pair. But I have been dealing with this noise for about a year.

Thank you so much for this video. Please advise on the (type of) lubricant used
don't use a petroleum based grease for poly bushing lubrication, it will break down the bushing and will need to be replaced fairly soon. Polyurethane busings should only be lubricated with silicone based synthetic water-proof grease for best performance and longevity. don't use the sprays as they are only meant for "quick fixes" and not meant to last. get something that you have to put on your finger and spread it around, that will last the longest.

Great ! Is it so compulsory that the sway bar bush diameter to be very accurate as the same as the sway bar diameter ? Up to what mm the difference can be tolerated ? Because the Octavia MK2 sold in India came with different sway bar sizes and I’m finding it hard to find the accurate size of my car sway bar. As per the vernier I used the rear ARB is 21mm but the bushes online ( Powerflex ) for my car has options of these sizes 20.5, 20.7 and 21.7. Which one should I opt for ?

I have a 2002 Montero Sport 2wd and my sway bar has a real bad bushing on passenger side, then inspected drivers side and there's a crack in it too, but also after removing skid plate there are 2 more in the middle of bar. I figure it's best to replace all 4 while at it since they're cheap.
My question is, will the front end drop down or need braced when the bar is taken loose or will it remain in area for reconnection?

Teflon tape on the sway bar helps a bunch to stop any squeaks from the poly bushes.
My mazda 626 1995 bushings are not cut in the base so I think I have to slide them from the both ends of the sway bar, is that ok or I have to cut them and install them like you did?

Hi Charles will this be same for my mk6 gti it currently has a clunk when I go over bumps or if I make a turn (more noticable when I'm reverse parking) took it to a mechanic and they don't know where the clunk is coming from
I have changed my Full suspension including struts springs tie rod ball joint and have also installed the power flex anti lift kit , unfortunately still have the clunk

Hey! Great tutorial, I recently replaced the bushings on mine but I went for the "normal ones". I am afraid to powerflex my MK4 as I dont know what the ffect will be on the comfort, the roads over here are not that great and its very common to drive through a swiss cheese road. Does the poly make the car more "bumpy"? I know that it makes it sit "tighter" on the road which is great, but I dont want to destroy everything else in the process, what are your thoughts on such scenario? Also do they (powerflex) require maintenance?

brilliant. mine make a noise when the engine is hot. I have powerflex ones fitted but I have to grease them every 6 month's otherwise I get creaking. it's annoying tbh having to keep greasing them

Try that on Chevy cobalt, Drivers side you have to install blind. Not enough room for heads, head and a light.

My new 034 RSB has Zerk grease fittings in the bushing mounts.

Charles, awesome video once again. Quick question. I bought a '99.5 Jetta 2.0 a few months back and I guess I never figured it had a sway bar and I never bothered looking for it. Any idea if it does because if so, that's probably the randomly annoying noise I hear from the front end...
It does. It’s a little different than this one but it should have one.
In addition, the bushings might not be the only problem. Usually the sway bar end links have failed as well.

I love mine too. I work 3rd shift as a dispatcher. She stays at home doesn't need to have a job I take care of her. She looks after our new family and the house is always clean. Food is always warm and lunch is always made. She's my 7th grade sweetheart with more than a decade of knowing one another and being attached emotionally and spiritually with one another the moment we met and shook hands at 13-14 yrs of age. But I still decide where the money goes. I pass it by her she never gets worked up because she knows at the end of the day everything is paid and we're not living paycheck to paycheck. She gets her shopping sprees I get mine too. Equality.
I'm 4 years late but does a bad bushing cause creaking when turning left or right? Noise does get louder the warmer the weather or the car. It is a clear creaking sound,no clunks,knocks,grinds etc..just creaking.

Thanks Charles. I tried this technique w/regular rubber bushings and could not get the clamp close enough to start the bolt by hand; even w/the prybar trick. The bushings were supposed to be for the 23mm bar, but the inner dia hole measured 21mm; does this sound correct? [This is on a '04 GTI] I suspect the inner hole would be smaller than 23mm, but 2mm smaller? I could only compress the clamp enough to have the threads touch the hole, but not bite. I used a 2' prybar but the new bushings would not compress. It also appears I don't have as much room in there on my GTI as you on your R32, but I could be mistaken. Eventually I gave up and put the 14yo ones back in. Still a good video.
I also had a ton of trouble. On the engine side, I just barely could get the bolt back in after the bushing was in place. On the tranny side I couldnt get it, until I took the plastic tranny cover off, and used a c-clamp to pull the bracket tight.
Sometimes it's necessary to close the bracket a little bit. I could not tight the bolt to the chassis without doing this!

Broski I have eibach swaybars front and rear. These seems to be 22mm in diameter but I all I can find is bushings for 21mm and 23mm swaybars. Do u think 23mm will work ok for my setup??
I think that will be too big. Eibach doesn't have bushings?
HumbleMechanic I haven’t found any bushing kits alone. Eibach seem to sell it as a kit with the swaybars only.

My honda civic makes a light creak noise when i turn in a stop and low speed when driving in a parking lot. Which i changed tie rods upper and lower ball joints and shocks and sway bar links. I still get that embarrassing noise its bad especially when its wet rainy day too.idk i need any help.

Quick and easy, I'd do this for my R32 if the previous owner hadn't removed the front sway bar for the air suspension which I've replaced with coilovers (the valve block for the bags was shot).
Don't get me wrong the Air suspension was awesome when it worked and very comfortable. But you're right even if it was well maintained there are to many points for failure, mainly leaks on the tubing and there were a couple of spots where the tubing had worn out and leaked.
Could you change the bushings in the mk3? I have 4 and they look different than the mk4;thanks

When i bought my Golf 4 variant 2016 the bushings were pure crap. I been thinking of it every summer like "this summer i'll change them" - hasn't happened yet. The ones you replaced looked brand new compare to mine lol (315000 km). Looks easy but everyone keeps saying "dont do it" so i dunno
I get a cracking noise on the front end everytime I go in reverse and I hit the breaks (metal to metal). Would this be a problem with these bushings as well or something else? I've already replaced the control arms and ball joints on my MK5 jetta as well as the struts and the end links seemed to be fine. Appreciate the help

I recently got a yugo in a year or so I want to tdi swap it to keep the fuel economy but double the power... what year of tdi would you recomend that parts aren't to expensive for and have decent upgrades
I think the ALH found in the 1999-2003 MKIV is probably the best option in the USA. The AHU might be a better option if you want to convent the computerized TDI into a non-computerized engine. Some people call it "m-TDI."

My front left tire seems to rattle when I go over any bump. I changed the sway bar links but it did not resolve the issue. Would these cause a rattleling sound?

sometimes aftermarket struts have holes that are too big or distorted. Add washers like here, www.se-r.net/zotz/images/proc/suspension/monroe_cam_bolt_2.jpg
if strut is all secure then check ball joints.
[I am not mechanic. just personal experience with rattle over bumps and loose struts]

I think if you search for a variety of BMW repair videos on youtube, someone will mention a message board where they either learned how to perform the repair or where they taught other people to perform such a repair.
Lower control arm replacement is a common repair job on the BMW 3-series, so I suggest you watch those videos until you see one that mentions a BMW enthusiast message board. There are a variety of common repairs performed on BMWs, but since I'm usually working on American and Japanese cars, I'm not sure what those other common repairs are.
Scotty Kilmer makes videos about what regularly fails on a BMW, but he doesn't mention discussion forums. However, people commenting on his videos may mention BMW enthusiast forums. I often ignore his videos because he spends too much time telling us that we should just buy a Toyota.
Bobistheoilguy isn't specific to any make or model of car, but they have advice for many cars, and they will tell you what BMW enthusiast forums are good. If all you need is advice on which lubricants to use on your car, someone will know the answer within an hour.

Usually they come with little packets. Whatever it is it is super sticky and gets everywhere
I have a hyduandi sonata 2014... recently I've gotten a annoying noise from my front end. I've replaced the sway bar link that were in need of replacing but I still get a noise outta the front end with the front suspension goes over bumps.. I checked the struts and shock but that wasnt end... I dont know what to look for next .. Any ideas
