CONVERT A SHOP VAC TO A PROFESSIONAL EXTRACTOR

  • Everything you need to convert your shop vac into a professional extractor. I have had my Ridgid portable Vac for a long time and have been asked this question a million times. Can you use a shop vac to extract carpet during auto detailing. The answer is yes kind of. In order to extract a carpet or interior fabrics effectively you need a water source to lightly spray the fabric while you vacuum it out. This water is sprayed in a precise area and amount based on the conditions. You need to be able to see what is being removed from the fabric through the clear viewing area on the extractor handle. This view tells you if the fabric still has either dirt or soap still in it and you can decide how much longer to continue in that spot. The attachment and the water spraying ability will make or break the process. I decided after watching a few videos and doing some research that it would be a great plan to convert my shop vac to have this ability. With the proper fittings and products your shop vac can be easily converted to a very usable auto detailing extractor or carpet spot cleaner. I have listed below all the parts and accessories that you will need to complete this project. This is a great auto detailing extractor kit that I like a lot. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments. Thanks for watching and I hope you consider subscribing to my channel.

I love this setup. On tough jobs I had an issue not being able to use hot water though. So I found a cheap easy solution. I used a weed sprayer but any container that holds water and pressure will work. I didn't want to pump the bottle for pressure all the time. I Installed a shrader valve with male threads to the bottle and secured it with a washer, nut and rtv to seal. Hooked up my $50 Ryobi tire inflator that kicks on and off at desired psi and it works like a dream.🙌 Cold water is good for most jobs but is nice to have the option for hot water when needed.

@@HawaiiDetailing I did the set up the air hose on amazon( the one in your link is back ordered) I purchased mine at Home Depot. I connected the water hose to my hot water side of my washing machine. The system works good but what I noticed is that by the time the hot water reaches the end of the 50' water hose it looses a lot of its temperature. Wondering if I go to a 3/8" water hose if it would make a difference. But still haveing a close water source is still great

Love the idea, I’m definitely gonna use the hose sock though, that would look way more aesthetically pleasing!
Gonna take it a step further though, hear me out! Get a fitting to connect the end of your kobrajet hose to draw your water feed from. You can simply turn the water on to your pressure washer wall install and then leave the pressure washer in the off position. So you can get standard water pressure and not have to tap the garden hose!
Then you can trim down the long air hose to make the whole unit easier to store away etc.
Just pull it out, plug in power, take the pressure washer gun off and plug your hose into the extractor and off ya go!
I just need to find an adapter to go from 1/4 to 3/8 so we can adapt the extractor hose to the pressure washer hose.

Planning to buy a wet/dry vac as soon as my extractor wand is delivered. One of the things i found out is that by using tap water which are not distilled has a higher chance of causing water stains to fabrics. you can also hook up the water sprayer into a light pressured water like pump sprayer or adjustable pressure sprayer.

    • @fuuraa4765

@@PolishedMobileDetailing503 water filtering and distilling are different things. distilled water seperates the water itself from other stuff thats mixed into the water and water filtering just filters the stuff that is dangerous for human consumption. filtered water still has some minerals in it that may cause stain to the fabrics. my best bet for faster production is to just buy distilled water or do it your own if you have the budget for it.
for me im just buying liters of distilled water and since im using a pump sprayer i can just dump the water into the sprayer

The MyTee hand held extraction tool and other MyTee products are now shown on Amazon as "currently unavailable".
This looks like a great system. I've had a Bissell Green Machine and the automotive version of that machine, but they do lack suction power to pull the dirt and pull the water to reduce drying time. Even as a homeowner, I've got three family vehicles that need cleaning a few times a year, couches and upholstered chairs, small throw rugs and general cleanups. With the 6.5 HP Ridgid vacuum I already have, this alternative is worth the investment for a more professional clean.

My dude! You probably just saved me thousands of dollars 🤘 I'm a house cleaner that just started getting into very low moisture VLM carpet cleaning and floor cleaning, I think a rig like this would work perfect as I run my business out of my Prius. I have a carpet cleaning friend that told me about getting a six horsepower Plus shop vac for extraction on tile and grout and other applications for carpet and upholstery cleaning etc, apparently that has enough suction to make everything happen so a set up like this in addition to that would be perfect! Totally portable to compared to the professional "portable" extractors. I know they have separate water heating units as well so I could totally add one of those on in the future as well, but for now something like this would be totally good for rinsing and extraction 🦾 thanks!!

I run truckmount machines for a living and this mod is easily 95% as good as a $70,000 van mounted unit, and your techniques are spot on too. My only question is if there's a way to incorporate a chemical rinse into the water flow? A neutral rinse helps pull out all the detergent and also PH balances the fabric.

They actually make a little water pump for the ridgid 5 gal at my Home Depot or I assume any water pump would work’ like a pond water pump or the tiny tiny ones they use for diy “portable ac etc’ anyway you’d just have to split your line run a hose from chemical bottle to pump and then other end tap into main water hose of your system and boom as u press trigger it should mix with your water/solution line
You’d have to home make it for sure no one’s gunna sell it but just get a hose T 3 way to tap into your water line on machine

But if you’re doing truck mounted U can figure it out! A truck mounted is gunna be so much better and have way more psi and suction / water lift this will do for home use but if u have a truck mounted you’re set buddy and have all the psi/ suction u need

Hey Jeremy I didn’t realize you only posted this video 7 months ago but coincidentally this was around the same exact time I was looking into building one of these DIY extractors. I literally followed your video detail by detail and used your links to order all the stuff from Amazon. I appreciate everything you did to help make this possible!
So I did get my extractor going and used it multiple times. However, I just went to use it again right now and I am not getting any water into the air hose it seems like. I tried two different extractor heads. I unscrewed the fittings I previously screwed onto the water line/air hose.
I cannot figure out why I am not getting water into my extractor head. When I pull the trigger no water is coming out. It’s worked great in the past when I’ve used it. I literally cannot think why I am not getting water into the line or the extractor head. Also, I am using a garden hose as a water supply like you are in the video. I even tried it on two different hoses.
What do you think is wrong here?
    Thank you!!!

I would trace the water flow from the spigot through each fitting to see where the water is being restricted. Separate the fittings as needed to identify where the water stops. There must be a clog or something that is causing this as the water should flow through with no issue. After you figure that out it will be an easy fix. Thanks for watching

@@russellesquivel-barker2270 I was going to suggest you look at the quick disconnect fittings. They are closed when separated and it's possible contaminants got into the fittings. That hose bib water hook up made me rethink this as I was looking at a full fledged "home" extractor thinking I would need a pump and tank. I got shop vacs out the yang. Hosing is kind of "thick" and hard to maneuver I would think over the regular bissel type. Thanks

I saw this week more videos around UA-cam about make a “professional estractor with a shop vacuum” they are all the same, my opinion is if you want a professional extractor that’s not for you, because you are using regular water, The advantage of the professional extractor is that you can use the necessary chemicals mixed with hot or cold water ( not only plain water) and that is what cleans, it does not matter if you previously spray the seat or the carpet with the foam cannon if you do not after remove that cleaning product with another appropriate chemical that extracts it (rinse fiber) so that the fiber does not become rigid and take on a bad smell, if you only use water it leaves a bad smell, especially on carpets, here in Las Vegas I got many jobs, because some guys do this job poorly and the carpet and seats stink of rot when they're drying

Enjoyed the video. You put a lot of effort into your channel. Thanks for that effort. From video shooting, editing demo of the product to all of the links in your description. Kudos on the cool project. Costs adds up on repurposing a shop vac.. I have been considering an extractor. I am a detail hobbyist and had been leaning toward the Bissel spot clean pet pro portable carpet cleaner.. Stay Safe!

You can get the orange model of this vacuum, that has wheels, for like 90-100$, and it regularly goes on sale.
Also, there used to be an amazing deal on a wal-mart shop-vac that had its own built in water tank, with its own handle and nozzle. Hart brand 5.5hp 6-gallon. quite a bit bigger, but I picked mine up for like 50$ on sale. It works quite well. I think they normally go for about 150$.

Hmm. 🤔 If you are working at clients' homes a lot, you can always use their outside water spigot. And their electrical outlet for your shop vac. If you can connect to their washroom hot water spigot, great. If not, you could pretty cheaply add a hot water tap on your own car or truck. Then you have endless hot water with u always. Two options: 1) tap into upper radiator hose or heater core for the hot engine coolant. 2) tap into the engine oil system. The oil option is hotter and easier to harness in my opinion. All items can be had around $275 from Amaz or eBay and installed with regulars hand tools.. Get the right sized, right type of sandwich adapter that fits your car's oil filter threads. Install sandwich adapter and adapt your oil filter. Now you have In/Out function of the engine's hot oil supply without affecting the car. You can still change your car's oil and filter as you normally would. Next, pipe some appropriate insulated hoses from the sandwich adapter to a vehicle-mounted plate heat exchanger. Get some sort of materials to mount the heat exchanger to the car. From the heat exchanger, run hoses to the side or back underneath the vehicle where you can hook up to with garden hose fittings, and allow them to be stashed away out of site under the car when not in use. Add some more of your normal engine oil to compensate for the new volume of oil needed to flow in the new piping and through the exchanger. That's all. Doesn't need a thermostat or a pump or anything electric or complicated because the car provides it. It can run "dry" on the water side without hurting anything during normal driving. Oil runs through it all the time harmlessly without changing the car. If you tap into the radiator or heater core instead, do the same thing with a plate heat exchanger. The heating medium changes but the plate exchanger doesn't mind. Mount the plate exchanger under the hood or under your car somewhere with straps or metal zip ties or something durable if it's meant to stay semi-permanently. So when u pull up to a customer house: Unpack your garden hose. Hook directly to their outside spigot attached to their house or apartment complex. Run that hose to one of the two garden hose hookups under your car. Then hook your tool up as seen in this video to the other garden hose hookup under the car. That's your hot water tap. Keep the car engine running idle in park as normal while u clean. Buy a $10 needle valve for the detail tool and install it inline a few feet back from the trigger for fine-tuned pressure adjustment. This should provide more than enough heat and water pressure for using the tool in the video to properly hot water extract on a car or sofa or some types of rugs even. 🤔 You might be able to use that setup to have hot water for pressure washing, but you'd need a water pressure unloader and/or one of those newer electric washers that shut off completely when you let go of the trigger. This way you can run pressurized water up to 500 or 1000 psi through the plate heat exchanger. It might be pushing it too much at those pressures and you might try running the hot water as source to the pressure washer instead of the other way around. Then there's no water pressure to hurt the exchanger but your washer won't like hot water beyond about 150F. Idk. Maybe with the shutting-off washers now there's no risk of hurting the exchanger. Haven't tried that yet.

I’m a fully mobile detailer here in East TN and legit, buying this setup now.
The water outlet on the $1500 Viper extractor broke after only about a month and they don’t honor warranty 🙈
We’re eco friendly (Eco Detailing TN) and pride ourselves on ‘using less than a gallon of water on each detail’. Basically we don’t use water hose/pressure washer.
So I’m simply gonna put my distilled water in a separate sprayer and run this extractor without water hose attached. I see it making for an even MORE already simple design.
I literally have three of those shorter Rigid vacs and just picked up a bigger one today actually lol.
Time to designate one as the WET only one.
Thanks for taking time to make this video!

So Awesome! I wish I saw something like this a long time ago. I made due with a jank setup before buying the bissell pro, Having use the Bissell spot pro for two years I got sick of it. It sucks, yes it does the job but man its rough. I just bought the aqua pro vac and it is sweet, that aside I would take doing this over the bissell pro any day. What is even cool with this is you can buy a second vac hose and easy swap from vac to extract or to work more cleanly just get a 2nd rigid vac and you are golden! Great content!
p.s. the hart 3n1 isn't to shabby either.

Hey after watching your vid I put together one finally. After a couple uses i realized it would be much better handling of the hoses if I thru in a quick disconnect at the same spot the vacuum hose attaches to the vacuum. So on my 50 ft 1/4 " airline I cut it at 9 ft I believe and put a quick disconnect so the vacuum hose and attached air hose winds up together and I don't have to fight 50' or kinking hose when I'm picking up or setting up. Just connect or disconnect and wind it up neatly and go.
Also I found a swivel cuff that makes a comfortable difference compared to the non swivel 1.5 x 1.5 you use. You don't have to fight the twist of the vacuum hose as your working.
